physical conversion RDM virtual RDM

Hello

is this possible without actual destroying RDM and constituting in RDM virtual physical? We have more than 2 TB of data on it and online extension is problem because virtual RDM must be restarted to recognize the new drive size...

Damir

Hello

It can happen only when the virtual machine is turned off.

  • VMware vcenter converter standalone physical conversion to virtual stuck to the completion of 81% for several days

Hello everyone I have an interesting question, I'm physical conversion to virtual pointing to the new virtual directly on the server esx conversion would set schedule for a day. But now, it's just stuck at 81% and not go further! I don't get any errors of ideas? questions are there a basis that I can look to see what is happening? Is there a way I can fix it without start over again. There are enough resources on the destination esx I had to change the hard drive space for destination and ram, but done nothing radical imprint more small which I think should do better.

It's an interesting case, you have here. I guess that conversion is complete, but somehow you do not see or a deadlock occurred.

Anyway you will probably be able to export logs to the customer. Go to the directory of newspapers to %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\logs (for WP/W3K) or vCenter Converter Standalone\logs %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\VMware\VMware (for Vista +) and find the log of the last worker (vmware-converter-worker - .log #). The status of the conversion is currently connected. Take a look, or that she has finished, is still running, is stuck.

If he has you can try restarting the client and/or server converter service. Do not stop the worker service unless you are sure that there is no conversion running!

  • Physics-conversion machine virtual Solaris

    Hi team,

Can we do the physical to virtual machine conversion Solaris... Solaris server is Sun V445 Sun V210 models.

    Thanks in advance

The V210 and the V445 are both SPARC and as such cannot be virtualized on vSphere, which only supports x 86.

You will need to create a new virtual machine, install Solaris x 86 and install and search/install a version of Solaris x 86 for your application.

  • Windows 2000 Pro system/disk physical conversion into virtual machine

Fairly new to the world of the VM and was directed to VMWare for possibly a problem for us.

We have a gentleman with an older system running Windows 2000 Pro (SP4) with a ton of software installed.  We put in place a new Win7 Pro system for him, but he won't Cross and reinstall everything (in addition to the time involved, some of the software is older and Win7 compatibility is probably a problem).

We were originally at a switch KVM allows you to switch between systems, but then I found in the converter and thought this would be a great solution for him.  My thoughts are to use the converter to create a virtual machine from its old system/hard drive and install Player on its new Win7 system, it can fire up to his old Win2000 environment when he needs to work - and we can empty the old physical system.

I have scanned through the documentation for converter and understood that I would need a version of Converter before 4.3 (like, 4.01 or earlier?).  Now, what should I install on it have to happen?

Do I need to set permissions on its legacy system to expose the discs on the network?

Can I get the old HD and connect it to the new system and convert this way?

Do I need to install something on the source and the host system to do this?

Once I can understand this point, we may need to conduct a number of other older systems, it keeps alive for the same reasons.

I guess I should ask first - is that what this application is designed to do?  Or it fits into another software solution?

Thank you very much for any information/guidance someone can provide - greatly appreciated.

(PS.  Please don't just live/link me to the documentation.  As mentioned, I went through that, and I'm not real familiar with the setting/process, so that really helped a lot.  Thank you once again.)

VHDs are used by VirtualBox and VirtualPC
    VMware uses the vmdk files

You start converter on the Win2000 and tell him to "convert THIS machine.
It then creates a vmx file plus a vmdk file.

On the Win7 host you install VMplayer or workstation, and then simply double-click the vmx file... If everything works as expected

  • Conversion from a physical to a virtual domain controller domain controller

    Hello everyone!

I was wondering if you guys can help me. We are running a physical server Proliant DL 360 Gen 8 as our physical domain controller. The host runs HP VMware 5.5 Update 1, and the domain controller running Windows Server 2012

I am looking to convert it to a virtual DC as a backup. I would like to add it to a host computer currently running three VM. I have a few questions.

    (1) is there a way where if the physical domain controller goes down, that the virtual server is brought online automatically?

    (2) are there caveats to a physical domain controller in a virtual domain controller?

    (3) is there a step by step guide on the process of conversion from a physical to a virtual domain controller domain controller?

    (4) what should I stop all services on the physical server during the conversion?

    (5) that I would be able to take the virtual domain controller and make like a secondary domain controller?

    Thank you

No, you misunderstood. For additional availability, you must implement a 2nd DC as a virtual machine now and leave this race. Don't bother to put something automagic, just the 2nd DC easy running.

Backups should always be done on a regular basis, because they might be useful if two domain controllers fail for some reason any.

  • Live Conversion RDM in VMDK

    Hi all

I have a VM (which cannot be turned off) on Esx 4.0 and I want to use storage vmotion to convert a disk (virtual machine has several disks) of RDM VMDK.

    Any advice or experience?

    Thank you very much

The main question is: is this a way RDM physical or virtual RDM.

    of http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1005241

For vSphere 4.0 and higher, the virtual disks and Virtual Mode RDM pointer files can be moved in the destination data store and can be converted into discs supplied thick or thin-set during the migration until the destination is not a NFS data store. Physical RDM Mode pointer files can be moved in the destination data store, but cannot be converted.

  • A machine Server 2008 physical to a virtual machine conversion issues

I'm trying the virtualization of a couple of servers using VMWare converter (version 4.3.0 - 292238)

If I move/convert a Server 2003 computer, it works perfectly.  I have connection, install VMWare tools, reboot and viola, I'm done.

When I try a Server 2008 machine, it always hangs on 'Apply the settings of the computer' for almost an hour.  I tried with two different servers (we were already virtual and one was physical)

    Anyone seen this before?

    I have attached the log

what you have is probably hp, IBM, DELL, with own software on the server. Before converting to virtual, you must uninstall this software and convert and you should open as a local admin NIC or disable

  • Directly using a physical disk without virtual file system?

I wonder if it is possible to directly use the physical disk with VMware vSphere Essentials Kit and will be that this increase in the performance of MS SQL database if located on this topic over on the virtual file system?

/ * the BONES still lie on the file system, virtual, or if possible - physics directly on disc again * /.

Yes, you can use RDM with vSphere Essentials. RDM may or may not be faster, and many consider it's a wash. It would be interesting to test it for you, but don't assume that you will get performance much better with a vs the other. RDM can also complicate things like backup strategies.

  • What is a physical server to virtual best practices?

I have a physical server with an attached drive HP 6400 Bay.

We want to convert it to a virtual machine.

    What is advised to do?

    Hello

For me personally I'd go with rehabilitate VM manually and then import / migration of data from P2V (using VMware converter) is generally not the sweet/good approach.

in regards to the San, you can deploy the virtual machine as RDM virtual mode as a pure big VMDK (2 TB - 512 bytes).

  • Physical server to virtual machine migration

I'm planning on migrating some if our biggest servers and I wonder witch method to use in order to get the fastest P2V migration. I've used both methods hot and cold, but y at - it performance that can be done to help accelerate the migration? The range of servers between 400 G-1 t of size.

    Thank you.

What I thought was that if the data files are on a different drive than the OS and application files that you may p2v the OS/APP disk and then you have your new virtual machine less data. Then present the existing SAN (previously used by the physical system) LUNs to the virtual machine as RDM virtual. Mount the LUNS and assign the letter nonsense (for windows or same mount point for NIX) previously used by the system physical one while you are finished.

This method involves less amount of data transfer and associated downtime. It depends of course if your DB data files are separate LUNS for your application files.

  • Cannot convert physical machines to virtual

I'm trying to convert a physical machine to using 'Converter Standalone Client 4.0' virtual ESXi 4.  When the converter is complete, the operating system would not start.   I tried this on 3 different machines to Windows XP and got a different message each time.

1st: I got this error message: FAILED: cannot create a snapshot VSS of the source volumes. Error code: 2147754758 (0 x 80042306).

2nd: I got a black screen with a cursor.  He just sits there and doesn't do anything.

    3rd: error loading operating system.

I tried the local processing and conversion of distance.  Each of them with the same result.   What I am doing wrong?

    Thank you!

    hinzinho,

Welcome to the VMware Community Forums.

Make sure that you use Converter 4.0.1 because you convert to ESXi 4.

1st: I got this error message: FAILED: cannot create a snapshot VSS of the source volumes. Error code: 2147754758 (0 x 80042306).

Take a read through this thread: http://communities.vmware.com/message/1320104

2nd: I got a black screen with a cursor. He just sits there and doesn't do anything.

If you went to IDE on IDE physical box with the virtual machine.  It is in the release notes:

    http://www.VMware.com/support/converter/doc/releasenotes_conv401.html#97

    3rd: error loading operating system

It not in fact generated an error message during conversion?  Would you be able to provide logs of converter if she missed.  In the contrary case, we will need to know what has been selected in the wizard and a description of the source system with a screenshot of disk management.

As side note, send only one issue per thread.  It is best to separate the questions for people seeking answers to their problems and allows you to assign points to those who help on individual issues.

  • Duplicate the physical channel with virtual channel

I accidentally created more global virtual channel with a single physical channel, for example:

    global virtual channel physical channel

    A0 vtc00

    A0 vtc01

    A0 vtc02

    My questions are:

    1. How can I change the virtual channel as follows:

    global virtual channel physical channel

    A0 vtc00

    A1 vtc01

    A2 vtc02

2-How do I re-name/remove the virtual global channel, when it is not in the task?

    Thanks for your time, Dylan

    Hello Carisa,.

I decided to go head re - install the DAQmx tonight and re-imported the right config file known about it.  So far, all global virtual channels are now under the management of devices and interfaces plus all unwanted virtual channels have disappeared - Yippee!  I tried to browse a unit test to make sure that the virtual channels work too, they seem good.

Finally, the issue is resolved.  I would like to say thank you to you for you and Roberto Bozozlo have spent the time to help me through this.

    Sincerely, Dylan

  • ESXi 5.5u1 - serial number physical host in virtual machine

I was happy to see in 5.5 update 1 release notes that it should be possible to switch the serial number of the host through a virtual machine hardware.

    • Allow virtual machines to display the serial number of the physical host
Virtual machines cannot reflect the physical hosts ESXi serial numbers.
      • This issue is fixed in this version.

Does anyone know how to enable this for a new or existing virtual computer?

I had problems in the past with Apple Push Notification Services expects a Mac serial number. I hope that I can now spend series a Mac Pro to the host through a virtual machine.

Someone at - it experience or knowledge to implement this? Thank you!

Hi DJLambertand welcome to the VMware communities!

If you want a prompt of OS X to use the serial number of the host, you will need to add this option to the virtual machine configuration:

    serialNumber.reflectHost = 'TRUE '.

or, if you want a prompt of OS X to use the model of host hardware ID (learn "MacPro5, 1"), ID (i.e. "Mac-12345678" ") and the serial number all all aboard:

    smbios.reflectHost = 'TRUE '.

will take care of all three.  Note that there is no way to understand or control what happens if you have multiple virtual machines with the same serial number and using this external serial number as an identifier.

Let us know if you have problems with these options!  I'm not sure whether they will solve the problem you face, but... For example, there are more problems iMessage running in a virtual machine...

    See you soon,.

  • Backup domain controller: physical vs. Virtual

    Hi ladies and gentlemen

What are your thoughts on the benefits of keeping the BDC on a physical server. Our server BDC hardware came at the end of life and I have the opportunity to virtualize it or replace it with another physical server.

It is advisable to keep the BDC off the virtual in order to always be able to serve the field was anything to the San?
