Pile of COW is exhausted

Hi all

Due to lack of COW, consolidation of the snapshot has failed.

Even after optimization according to the following KB, the COW is exhausted.

VMware KB: Cannot power on a virtual machine due to depletion of heap memory COW

Could someone give me advice on the next action, please?

Kind regards

Kiyo

Sounds like you have quite a long string of snapshot?

Let's say you have 80 snapshots and cant to consolidate with vmkfstools.

Then I start with half of the chain and combine up to 40 instant - once again try vmkfstools-i
If it does not - stop all other VMS running if possible and take smaller steps - up to snapshot10 for example.

If nothing else - works I would use a Linux VM and do the consolidation without the help of ESXi.

  • Snapshots are broken now

Hey guys, I'm having a major problem here. With the help of 5.5U1 and last Veeam.

Something three days stuck in a process of Veeam backup and after that all snapshots of tasks of backup created, and then never erased.

So yesterday I discovered SSH to each protected VM veeam production had like 90 delta files and they were not appear in the Snapshot Manager. In addition, 'delete all snapshots' failed. And create the new snapshot failed too. After fiddling around with the restart of management on hosts services and add or remove snapshots, I was able to consolidate most of the snapshot successfully.

However, I always still have some questions, difficult to know:

    (1) a very large VM still has a complete chain-deltas attached to one of its VMDK. vCenter offers to "consolidate", but then consolidation fails with "cannot allocate memory". Theres a lot of RAM available on the host, like 100 GB +, and memory-wise, it's a small VM. There are like 0, 8 x the size of the virtual machine to free space on the data store, but as all deltas take about 10 GB combined, I think that this should not be a problem, too. There was a similar problem with a big other VM, but it was resolved by turning off the virtual machine and then consolidate. It does not help down with power on this virtual machine.

Still a bit, I think it's a question of data store space, however I do not see why so much free space would be needed to commit snapshots. Is there any maybe so as to make this file a delta at the same time?

    (2) creating new images is now broken. If I try to create a new snapshot of any virtual computer on the hosts involved (even if its engine turned off and no one protected Veeam platoon), it fails with ' a general error has occurred: The delta files are then created, but the pictures do not appear in the Snapshot Manager. However, if I reboot with /etc/init.d/hostd restart management services and restart etc/init.d/vmxa, these shots failed suddenly appear in Manager and work as they are supposed to. And can be removed successfully.

If I try to take a picture once again, it fails with the same error, and the cycle continues.

I tried to restart a server ESXi, but who has done nothing more management restarting services already do. The behavior is the same if I create/delete snapshots in the Web Client via vCenter or if I directly on the host computer in the clish.

I have a suspicion that this is what has caused the problem of Veeam in the first place, given that taking snapshots apparently fails, but it actually happens in the backstage. It's what might be broken and why?

We have not a vmware active support contract, and I think that Veeam guys will say that it is a matter of vmware. I have yet to hear a response, but my experience with them tells me that this is what's going to happen.

    So, you're my only hope

    Thanks in advance.

OK guys, thanks for your comments, I solved the problem.

#1 has been resolved by restarting the ESXi. After that the command of Consolidation has worked like a charm.

The pile of COW was probably close to being complete before restarting (after two days with 5 virtual machines running with 90 snapshots + each), and that's why the building had failed.

Problem #2 was incredibly obscure. What has caused all this strangeness was disconnected from a NFS data store where a large number of installation ISOs if it is located. It was off just on the NAS, without disassembling correctly vSphere.

It turns out that ALL virtual machines I tried to taking snapshots had an ISO in the CD-ROM set up pointing to the data store. (disconnected, but always present in the config).

So, looks like that ESXi when you have a unavailiable resource in the configuration of the VM. It throws an error that could mean anything at home, then silently with the creation of a snapshot in the background. Crazy...

What has helped me discover this was sweeping the newspaper spend on one of the hosts after he tried to create a snapshot.

Thanks to you two, you certainly have me headed in the right direction!

  • Calculation of resources LM disk space

I'll put up a configuration of demo with about 300 GB of 10 servers. I want more people to use at the same time. If I have 3 users connect to LM at the same time and they deploy this configuration in their work space, will it take 900 GB of space if users are deploying all their macines? Each configuration will take up to 300 GB? Or LM records changes? Is there a documentation on that? Thank you!

3 x 300 GB machines will take up to 48 MB of space per copy initially and then grow in size as are written by blocks.  Its a statement of changes based on block by block, called "copy on write" (COW).

    More info below...

    Disks of COW

COW disks are the disk layout behind REDO logs, instant, linked clones and almost every computer created by the Lab Manager virtual.  These are files that represent a full disk by referencing a basic disk instead of copy it.  The disc of COW begins as a file (16 MB) empty and captures all the entries in the instance it represents in a sparse format.  Read both the disc of COW and underlying basic disks, you get the equivalent of a new instance of disk.

A multitude of disks of COW can refer to the same basic disk to create multiple copies of this disc. COW drives can also be built out of other disks of COW, so the eventual structure in laboratory Manager looks like a tree of disks, which the internal nodes are shared.

Lab Manager limit the tree to a depth of 30, and there is no limit to the width of the tree. Lab Manager also ensures that all internal nodes are read-only at the application level, and that leaves nodes are the only nodes in the tree that can be "run" so that we do not destroy the dependent disks of COW. As VMs are removed in the application, a background process asynchrously Lab Manager deletes nodes in the tree he can without affecting dependent disks of COW.

When the disks of COW are used, their data structures pick up of ESX (the "pile of COW") kernel memory. The pile of COW is 40 MB in ESX 3.0 and up to 192 MB on ESX 3.5 u4.  Most of the COW lot is taken over by "inputs of root" which use 4 bytes from the heap of COW for each 2MB of disk, represented by disks of COW.  The result is that we can only open disks of COW representing a sum of 20 TB (40 MB / 4 b * 2 MB) of the base on each ESX Server disk.  This includes all nodes of a chain of disks of COW, so if you deploy virtual machines, with a string of 10 deep drives built COW out of 250 GB basic disks, you can open only 8 of these virtual machines before you run out of heap of COW.

Performance of the disks of COW

The impact on the performance of the disks of COW is complex, with hits of peformance and potential gains.  There will be a small performance hit start during the caching of metadata, degradation of performance during certain i/o operations and potential performance gains to the storage array cache.

Metadata cached in memory to start the virtual machine describes the sparse structure of the COW drive - which hit to get the data from the file. Given that these metadata can become quite large, caching only a part of it.  When a virtual machine is a virtual SCSI read and we reached the metadata cache, each virtual reading will result in a single physical reading.  If we have a lack of cache, however, we first must make a metadata read before making the actual data read. Therefore, we can do more than a physical read by virtual reading if a virtual machine is reading from a variety of sectors of the disk.

Another potential impact on the performance of the disks of COW is blocking during writing SCSI. Rare disks of COW will develop as the data is written to the disk (in segments of 16 MB), and files should be locked as they are grown.  This does not work with ESX virtual machines with a monolithic basic disk. The impact will be more apparent during continuous written causing the COW drives to grow rapidly.  In practice this was not a major issue in the facilities of Lab Manager.

There are potential performance benefits to using disks of COW because of the caching of the storage array. Storage arrays cache files commonly used in memory, and when you use disks of COW, and commonly used and to share COW records can be read from memory and no disk.  Director of the laboratory is a use case that can take much of this advantage.

    Maintenance of records of COW

Basic direction is to not worry the length of chain linked clone until it is close to the limit of the System Lab Manager of 30. Directors must ensure that they keep enough available disk space on their berries to consolidate records when they get close to this limit.

    Borderline cases

There are cases where the length of chain linked clone must be controlled:

Large capacity disks base & long strings: each ESX 3.5 u4 server can support only disks of COW representing 96 TB of disk Basic.  If your basic disks are large (100s of Go), you can control the length of chain drive of COW to stay away from this limit.  Lab Manager understands the limits of COW ESX and act appropriately limits are reached.

Wholesale writes: for use cases that make large writes to disk (loads of large databases, application installs, etc.), the advantage of related clones Compact is reduced to the minimum. In these cases the previous consolidation can save a considerable amount of disk space. If you can design processes such as major Scriptures are made once and everybody down copies of the result, you will save a lot of disk space.

  • iPad storage being quickly exhausted Air

When I did a recent sync between my iPad and iTunes, it showed that since the upgrade to 9.3.2 somewhere in the region of 60 GB had been exhausted and is displayed under 'Documents and data.  I don't have any idea what used this because only the last time I checked, there were 70 GB of free and I don't have anything installed or downloaded applications since. Then in the morning, I was not able to load the Mail app, whenever I went in there, he remained on the screen for 3-4 seconds then returned to the home screen. Because of the recent storage problem, I checked what he said in settings > general > storage & use iCloud and it showed there were 15 GB free.  I had no time to pursue the inquiry so I turned off.

When I got home, there was a message on the screen saying that I was almost out of storage, so I checked again and now it says I have 0 bytes!

None of the applications display a generally large amount of storage against them (the largest is 9.1 GB, then 7.5 GB, then 3.1 GB, 2.5 GB, 1.2 GB then gradually more small 678 MB up to 1.1 Mb).  So I can't understand where all the space suddenly disappeared. How can I trace that has used space?

With the symptoms you describe the system (or application) is damaged and you will need to do a restore of the system to be solved. First check these articles for suggestions. If of any help (and that's what I suspect) then do the system restore:

The system restore. First save your device via iTunes. Also import your photos on your computer and copy all the important data. Reconstruction of the support first test and test. If this does not help, you may need to restore as a new and reconfigure from scratch as the backup may be damaged. It is important to have your photos and your saved data separately from the backup. Here are the steps for a restoration:

Hi, my Mac Mini 2012 (i7 2.3) it starts to make a noise. Ran some tests and the fan seems to run to 6500rmp. Whenever I power, the fan starts at max speed. After 10 or 15 minutes of use, the fan calms down.

Any ideas how can I solve this problem?

    Thank you in advance!

This "4M0T/1/40000003: gas exhaust-6407" indicates a hardware problem with the fan motor.

Maybe a bad electrical connection with the connection with the logic board or maybe the fan needs to be replaced.

  • Go to bed before exhausted battery MacBook Pro retina (mid-2012)

I hope that someone in the community can help with this question.

I have a MacBook Pro (mid-2012) with a battery 3.2 old Yes and less than 300 cycles. I think the battery is depleting faster (which is natural after 3.2 years) but benchmarking between percentage left and the unit goes into mode 'sleep' is meaningless. For example, tonight the battery came into sleep mode with 16% left on the screen - sound almost if the MacBook thought it was exhausted.  I have heard do NOT need calibration for that MacBook Pro, but it feels like it does.  Which leaves me feeling very concerned on what continues.

    Things I've tried so far:

    1. full reset SMC and General reboots.

    2. a full discharge and recharge (attempted calibration despite says that's not necessary).

3 using the activity monitor to see if something is sucking energy unduly.  (Which there isn't, and everything seems normal).

4 using the battery health app to look at the State of the battery - said its 87% in good health and no calls for service or replacement.  ('Normal' status).

Anything related or apparently wrong - but certainly go faster down and switch mode 'sleep' around 16 to 19%.

All the words of wisdom of the community?

    Thanks in advance.

    Brad.

A full release just the risk damage to your battery. Are you sure that the Mac is not just go to sleep as it was designed to do? Try to reset your default energy-saving preferences. If that does not resolve the problem, maybe it's a problem with the operating system, in which case you should try to reinstall OS X by pressing down the command key and the R key as soon as you see the Apple logo at the start of your computer to the top and then clicking "reinstall Mac OS X" and following the on-screen instructions.

I hope you find this information useful.

iMac running OS 10.9.5, suddenly getting alerts that my application memory is running out / has run out; I use the same applications that I used throughout and never had these alerts. I close all except an application but still get the message. This just started happening.

    HI there are Selia,

Looks like you get this error message concerning the exhaustion of the memory of the application no matter how little you actually run. I would like to start by resetting your PRAM first:

OS X El Capitan: reset PRAM your computer

    https://support.Apple.com/kb/PH21876?locale=en_US

    1. Choose the Apple menu > shut down.

    2. Look for the following keys on the keyboard: Option, command, P and r. you need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.

    3. Turn on your Mac.

    4. Immediately press on and hold down the command-Option-r-P. You must press these keys until the black screen with the Apple logo to appear.

Continue to hold the keys down until you restart your Mac, and you hear the tone of starting for the second time.

    5. Release the keys.

After resetting the PRAM on your computer, you may need to update your speaker volume, screen resolution and startup disk preferences.

Then test the question a bit. If it persists, I would then start mode safe so that the system can check for disk errors and clear a few caches of system level.

OS X El Capitan: start in safe mode
