Please help me to adjust my current HARD drive configuration

I posted this at the end of 'Guidelines for best record Setup' badly yesterday, but I think that the thread can be so long and so old my question is simply lost in the mix, so I'll go ahead and create a new post here.

I read damage on the guidelines for the best drive configuration and its position during the installation of overhead storage for editing systems, and I have a few questions...

First of all, I have a TON of data, much of that which I could probably check on own things upward. Here's what I have right now, and maybe you can give me some recommendations to fix things so it'll work better (my PPBM5 shows significant slowdown in the disc-land). FWIW, all internal hard drives are 7200 RPM SATA2.

I have a WD 250 GB enterprise storage disk for my OS/programs, and I think it contains the swap file... (although I have 12 GB of Ram, so I don't know how many times it is used). This one is full of about 50%.

I have a WD 500 GB enterprise storage drive that contains all of my graphics, photos and audio, as well as other generic data files (think documents, PDFs, etc here) it is about 60% full.

I have a 1.0 TB WD Caviar Black for my projects/Scratch/Previews drive. This one is full of about 40%.

I have a 2 TB RAID - 0 (from WD Enterprise storage drives 2 x 1.0TB) which contains all my data in whatever format it is arrived (most are direct capture of HDV in the first, but there is a good mix of AVCHD, R3D and various SD stuff, too). This one is full of about 95 percent.

I also have a backup of RAID-0 WD 4TB drive which is a little over 50% full and keeps a backup complete of all the drives in my system, less the OS and programs. (FW800)

Then I have a second drive 2 TB of single disc that I use to maintain an offsite backup of whatever I am working on projects, more important things like photos and graphics. This one is full of about 30%. (FW800)

Then I have a third disk single disk of 1 TB, which is a general backup drive and usually remains in place and is about 80% full. (USB 2.0).

OK, so it's where things are now. From what I read, I think I might be better off by doing the following:

250GB for OS/programs

500 GB for the previews/Scratch/pagefile

3 x 1.0 to drives (non-RAID) for my projects/media OR 1.0 TB RAID3/5 for projects/media (but I'll have to find a way to archive a bunch of stuff... BluRay?)

I've got room in my system of adding a player more and I can probably get the approval for the purchase of a disk more if I asked my boss - so if I got a 2 TB drive, I could do a 2.0 TB RAID by using two TB 1.0 discs for interlacing and the 2 TB for parity, leaving me with an extra 1.0 TB? Or should I get a disk 1 to and a 2.0 to Raid with two disks of intertwining and two for parity? I'm really not upward on things like RAID, despite reading your article on Wiki and he...

Also, I could separate my current RAID-0 and not lose the data on it?

Just FYI, I use RAID on Board (using the motherboard ASUS P6T6 Server) and the purchase of a RAID controller is out of the question right now...

I edit mainly HDV/AVCHD, but I have a little RED 4 k, and I'm hoping to upgrade my HDV for the JVC GY-HM700 camera soon.

Thanks for your advice and your expertise!

David

Thank you, David, which makes it much clearer. At least a lot more understandable for my mind tired now.

Given your options (no controller raid separated, possibly one or even two additional discs), I would go for this configuration:

C: 250 G OS & programs

D: project photos/graphics/audio-only 500 G, using Audacity / other documents & Pagefile

E: 1 TB projects and outputs & media Cache

F: 3 x 1 TB Raid0 for media and previews

The reasoning is that currently you run lack of space on your 2 drive raid0, when editing your access to current content on D will be rather small, so move your swap file can be attractive and by using the E drive for media cache, next to projects you split the load between E and F. Your drive F is growing in quality and will be faster and backups are supported with the 4 TB and off site of 2 TB drives.

  • Can satellite A100-847 - I replace my current HARD drive with a SATA2 HARD drive?

    Hello

I am currently using a Satellite A100-847 with a 100 GB SATA 5400 RPM HARD drive. I plan to change with a Western Digital WD2500BEKT 250 GB SATA2 16 MB 2.5 inch laptop hard drive 7200 TRM. Is it possible to replace my current HARD drive which is SATA with a one SATA2?

And if not what is my best option upgrade of the mine to a HARD fast (7200 RPM) disc?

    Hello!

Yes, you can replace the current drive with a SATA2 HARD disk. You already have a SATA interface, and this means that you can use each HDD with SATA interface.

I don't know Mr. but as far as I know the Satellite A100 cannot use the speed of SATA1. This means that the new HARD drive maybe won't work with SATA1 speed but there is no significant difference in performance.

A HARD drive with 7200 RPM is really fast, but don t forget it produces more heat and needs more electric battery. A HARD disk at 5400 RPM is perhaps fast enough for you?

    Good bye

  • June-July 2013 video Assembly Hard Drive Configuration - ideas welcome!

    Greetings from Adobe community,

I am a new Member and this is my first question. I appreciate all well informed and advice experienced for my hard drive configuration.

    My new system:

    CPU: Intel i7 3930 k

    MOBO: Asus P9X79 DELUXE

CPU Cooler: PTC 812 CM (Start with Air cooling, hesitant to use liquid for now)

RAM: 64 GB Corsair Vengeance (1600 MHz) (8 GB ea. of course)

GPU: GTX 650 Ti push (went here with plan slim for sell / level as necessary or suggested)

    Case/Tower: Stryker CM Storm

Block of power SUPPLY: Seasonic 80 + Platinum 860W (currently overkill)

OS: WIndows 7 Pro (with option to upgrade to 8)

Engraver: writer pioneer BD & DVD LG burner (excited and anticipating a commercial version of a new technology Petabyte optical )

    -> http://www.extremetech.com/computing/159245-new-optical-laser-can-increase-dvd-storage-up-de-un-p etaoctet

Now, I am open to any suggestion that could be a bottleneck above, but my main question is about my setup of my hard drive:

    I have the following drives:

    2 x Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB SSD

2 x 1 TB WD Caviar Black HARD drive (7200 RPM)

2 x 3 TB Seagate Barracuda HARD drive (7200 RPM)

I'm looking for the best speed, performance and use of these readers cs6 Master Collection, with a special attention given to AE, Premiere Pro and Photoshop.

(FYI: I'll backup all important files on a burning of final projects and external HHD comics)

My plan inspired by suggestions on AF and elsewhere:

    1.) C: 1 x Samsung SSD: OS & programs

    2.) D: 1 x Samsung SSD: media Cache & Previews

3.) x Seagate E: 1 3 to HARD drive for exports (should I buy another and raid it?)

    4.) F: 2 x WD 1TBs in Raid 0 for projects

5.) G: 1 x Seagate 3 TB HHD for media (I would add buy another and raid it?)

6))) < BONUS disc > I plan on running the tests to see how can I use the max RAM, and all that is not used, I am hoping to hear positive comments on make a virtual disk or a couple of them.   (I saw incredible reference points for them).  If it is recommended that could I use a virtual drive for {2 - Cache of media & Preview} or should I just use it for file exchange, cache and other temporary files? (or he renounce the total?)

I know it's a trick question, and I'm open to other suggestions which could include buying ~ $300 in additional disks if it will increase enormously the speed and performance.

Thank you all for reading, and I'm really looking forward to learning of your knowledge and your experience in this field!

    Mike,

    1. Check. Port SATA 6G. Add a static pagefile of 1 or 2 GB here.
    2. Check. Port SATA 6G.
    3. Check. 3G SATA port. No sense in this RAID and double the risk of data loss. Even a 25 GB export should only ± 3 minutes or less to write.
      • The time for export is spent on coding, not on writing. Why take the risk and spend money for a possible second 80-90 win on each export 25 GB? How many times do you do that?
    4. Check. SATA 6G Marvell ports. Make regular backups of your projects.
    5. Check. 3G SATA port. I would be very hesitant to raid0 from the original due to the risk of data loss.
      • X 79 platform is designed for dedicated raid controllers and RAID parity. If you need more speed, go in this direction.
    6. Forget about it. It is not practical. Windows does not start without a swap file, so it will always create a pagefile on C: dynamic if it can't find it. With 64 GB of memory the swap file will be used little or not at all. A static file of 1 GB is sufficient. Whenever you turn off your computer, the RAM disk gets erased and from the start should be newly created. This means that the cache of media must be newly created, indexing, compliant and creation of peakfiles must be made whenever you open a project. This time lost far outweighs the potential gain of a faster RAM drive.

    Just my $0.02

  • HP Elitebook 840: Can how SSD I use to replace my current HARD drive?

My HARD drive is starting to become a little slow and I want to move to an SSD. I borrowed an empty SSD with a friend to test the speed, but it does not appear in the BIOS. It is a standard Samsung SSD that should work. Is there a problem with my computer or it's compatibility with the SSDbrand or the type problems?

I am also looking in the upgrade from 8 GB to 16 GB of ram, can someone connect 1 stick of 8 GB of RAM that is compatible with my computer without having to replace the current 8 GB key.

    Hi Devmarti,

Your hard disk Samsung SSD should work on HP Elitebook 840 G1 as long as he uses the SATA port. You can check the video below to perform the duplication of the OS on your new hard drive before replace you youtube.

  • HP ENVY 15 t-j100 Quad Edition: upgrade of the current HARD drive

I have HP ENVY 15 t-j100 Quad Edition laptop which currently has a 1 to 5400 RPM HARD drive. I'm looking to upgrade to SSD drive and need help with the following responses

    (1) the laptop does support more than 512 GB since the laptop computer maintenance document lists (and does not) support max 512 GB

    (2) any 2.5 SATA 3 SSD should work with the configuration given my laptop as long as its not more than 9.5 mm thick. Please confirm.

I was chatting and asking for a response for the last month 1 HP support and I have not received a positive response. Forums suggest that capacity any no where like the cat and people on HP customer service gave the following answer.

The manual list only up to 512 GB because that's all there was when the laptop was sold or just would not be a market for the 1 TB SSD. Not too long ago, they were $7-800 and beyond almost anyone means. But there is no reason that your laptop can not run a 1 TB SSD. Also, you are right. All SATA 2.5 inch wide SSD will work as long as it's not more than 9.5 mm thick. These days, almost all of them are 7 mm. I would recommend a Samsung 850 Evo but there are a lot of good ones out there. We had a set of trouble on the series MX Crucial reports, however.

  • Need help with 'Other' on my Mac hard drive

Hi all, someone help me with this problem? Ive read previous support tickets in an effort to get to this sort, but my problem seems to be growing.

S my mac is as follows:

    OS X Yosemite 10.10.5

    iMac (21.5 inch, mid 2011)

Intel Core i5 at 2.7 GHz

    20 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

    Macintosh HD

My problem is the 'Other' part of the HD memory has been slowly growing in recent weeks, Ive has cleared out all the obvious places, course trashed all my movies, edited down from my apps I don't need, removed tons of photos, today I deleted my main cache, must have been more than 100 topics there alone.

But still 'other' continues to grow and I got my first warning tonight that my boot drive is almost full... currently; there I have 407,9 MB of free space on my Mac hard drive.

Can someone walk me through the steps to get that back at all?

    Many thanks in advance,

    Malcolm

Installed windows 7 apparently very well. Inserted the recovery driver and application and installed disk. Everything seemed fine. This morning I turned it on and it the hard drive error (3F0) Please install an operating system. I shut it down and restarted, it seemed normal.  I installed a few programs, stop it again. Returned by, it starts again and it took me to screen diagnosis saying SMART Check - not installed and short DST - not installed...  Can someone tell me how to remove that partition and I can format the drive in a usb sata enclosure and try again.

Please tell me the correct procedure to return this laptop running to a factory State. I have the original Windows7 and Windows8, Driver and Application for the two OS disks ' are...  I want to stay with the installation Windows7.

Thanks for any help on this problem. I have no idea where I was wrong!

It is not impossible that the new disk is bad, have seen before. It is also possible that the controller sata on the motherboard is bad, but I'd watch this last possibility. You can get an Exchange on the new hard drive?

Is it possible to add another hard drive to the computer instead of the Conference on disarmament and please tell me what parts do I need to buy and what is the maximum. Storage hard drive which may include my computer? There now 4RAM internal memory and 500 GB hard drive.

I would like to make my PC as strong as possible because I use it for work with heavy programs editing and I need a lot of internal memory.

    Vira.

    Hello.

I think you can install the drive and use your recovery disk to reinstall Windows.

You can change the hard drive of your computer with a WD one Pavilion, just keep in mind that you need a 2.5 inch drive. In addition, if your Pavilion model is dv6500 or more, it has a SATA-II interface, but you can always take a drive SATA-III and it will not work (although will run at the lower speed of SATA-II).

Here, you want to take a look at all our 2.5-inch drives:

  • need help syncing replacement of the external hard drive for Lightroom

    Hello Lightroom community.

I've exhausted my research and am now seeking help. Please direct me to this information in the forum if it exists. Also, I am a novice and while I am learning lightroom quickly with all my time spent in forums and online videos, I am limited in my understanding of how it all works.

Problem: I store my Lightroom Catalog and backups on my portable MacBook Pro. I use two external hard drives to store all my images and store my time machine backups. My external hard drive (1-hand) and my external hard drive (2-Back-up) were also well synchronized with the catalog and recognized by lightroom when I edited the pictures. I mainly used the DHM 1-hand when I edited, especially when I went. Last month, my main 1 - EHD died and was unrecoverable. I got lucky that my backup drive (DHM 2-back-up) has always had the images and changes.

In order to quickly save my 'JEP 2-back-up"to a new 'Hand' work external hard drive replacement, I dragged and dropped the backup disk images to the new"Main"drive so that I can sleep at night. This gave me the peace of mind that all of my images and backups time machine were now on two disks again. (Note: the new ' hand ' disk has a different name. ") Is this important?)

How can I get Lightroom to recognize and sync with my new drive and photos? Is there a simple way to do this or do I have to restart the process from the beginning? If so, where should I start? I'm afraid to attempt without some advice/suggestions from the experts.

Thank you for any information, you can pass it along! Please let me know what I can provide additional information.

Side note: when I looked to import the images of the new 'Hand' DHM - although this would make duplicates-Lightroom recognized that there are duplicates. So, where is the missing link?

If you can rename the new primary drive to match exactly the name of the previous main drive, that should correct the problem.

If this is not the case, then you want to open your Lightroom Catalog and then reconnect the top-level folder that contains your pictures by right-clicking on this top-level folder and then to find Missing folder pointing Lightroom on the equivalent top level on your new drive main folder. The details are described here (see Figure 4): Adobe Lightroom - find folders and files moved or missing

Side note: re-import never corrects this problem, it only makes it worse. Never use to reimport into solution in Lightroom.
