  My application uses vi in the report generator toolkit to continually save data to an excel spreadsheet (in fact, several worksheets in the same file). It works fine, however, the problem comes when we try to open/view all log XL files previously created (or _any_ other file XL by the way), because it is basically impossible to read the file due to the constant blinking/flashing XL writes in the log file.   Well, I thought to use scripture to the SS... but I have not seen an easy way to manage multiple worksheets. Would need a separate file for each worksheet?

  Although I love the .csv format since it is essentially text (readable), I think the TDMS format may be better suited due to the structure of the channel - think I can use one channel for each worksheet (?). But can I open a TDMS (read-only) file then it is written to, and then create the desired output of Excel (snapshot) from there?

  WRITING IN EXCEL
  Writing in excel is delicate because there is no direct way of Oracle, here are a few tips

  1 JAVA - you can create java stored procedure, I did not test this, but it's probably doable http://www.java-tips.org/other-api-tips/jexcel/how-to-create-an-excel-file.html

  2. XML Excel format - you can use UTL_FILE and writing to XML Excel can read http://blogs.msdn.com/b/brian_jones/archive/2005/06/27/433152.aspx

  Try going to Tools > Options > Applications. Here, you can specify what you want to do with each type of file.

  It's a weird thing.

  I just encountered a very strange problem when you open one of the excel files located on a Linux Samba Shared running file server.

  My laptop physics has a Dual Core 2 Duo 2.27 GHz, 4 GB of RAM and Windows 7 Pro 32-bit.

  My Desktop view has 2 vCPU (UC from host to 2.99 GHz/Core with base 16), 4 GB of RAM and Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit.

  Note: The Desktop view is located on the FusionIO card locally on the server, so it is lightning fast.

  When I open excel file from my physical office, need you 3 seconds to open and 5 seconds to enable the content (because it is a big xls file with a bunch of MACRO and LINKS to a different worksheet)

  When I opened that same excel view Desktop file, it takes you 18 seconds to open and 1 minute to activate the content.

  Anyone happened to have the same problem with their environment to experience?

  Do you mind sharing some tips to solve this?

  If it's a web application, you might do the following:

  Download the file from the client to the application server, there is a FileUpload-bean in the sample forms.

  Write an ontop of some excel library such as Apache POI-RICH or JExcelApi java program to extract the necessary data.

  Use the importer-Forms-Java (I'm not sure, but it should be already there in forms 6i) to create a PL/SQL-wrapper around the java code. Now you can use pure PL/SQL for reading excel fields and process the results.

  You can not read a native Excel file with this function. It reads text files delimited. Save the file in this format or use ActiveX to read Excel.

  You will need to install the program to the writer and the program GhostScript which is posted on the Web site.
  After installing the program, just open your Word or Excel file (or any other file that prints) and select 'File--> Print.  When you do so, you will find that you have a new printer installed called "CutePDF Writer".   Print this "printer" and it will ask you what file name to save your .pdf file in.
