Portege M400-146 slow startup performance

My 400 is significantly slow starts, compared to a lower specification laptop that this device was intended to replace. In addition to the understanding of the product, I see that there are more than 90 processes that run on this laptop more almost two times more than my previous unit and a lot more than my Small Business server that runs Win2k3/Exchange/ISA. My question is are there problems by removing the plethora of background tools that are of little use to me, specifically RAID/configfree

In addition there of the best-known problems associated slow performance/hang up with IE? There is an article that should resolve the issues of States with both software and an upgrade, but he didn't, even the last published this month made no difference.

In general, this unit is much slower than my previous spec'd base, grateful suggestions

Hello

I agree with you. Many processes of background can slow performance of the laptop.
But it is a simple fact. Each application or function on the laptop needs a clean process.
Portoge M400 is a portable high-tech and you can not compare with a low price laptops or office that support only a common features.

The Portege M400 supports the RAID Utility, HDD Protection, Tablet PC button, utility zooming, Rotation, ConfigFree, controls, utility of fingerprints and so on and the rest.

Of course, you can just disable or remove other feature requests, but then I wonder why you use the Portege M400 with the features and tools together?

But you can try to upgrade the memory. To my knowledge the Portege M400 supports 4 GB memory max. The upgrade improves performance.

    Hello

Eventually the partitions that appear on the HARD disk is corrupted.
I couldn't install the OS on my laptop because the partitions have been confues up, I don t know why, but I couldn't format the HARD drive using the recovery disk.

Finally, I took the Windows XP disc and formatted the whole HARD drive and deleted all partitions on the HARD drive. Then I installed Windows XP by using the Microsoft disk.
After that, I made the recovery disc and installed the operating system using the Toshiba disc.
Then, it was possible to reinstall the OS.

Notes; The M400 seems supported RAID and therefore, you need to install the RAID driver first!

  • Portege M400: Vista performance

I recently updated my M400-146 for Vista Ultimate (32 bit) and Vista works ok, but not quite as expected. If I compare the index experience Vista on some systems, the M400 compares poorly.

    On the M400 (Core 2 Duo 2 GHz + 2 x 1 GB PC-5300) I get a performance index of: -.

    Overall rating = 2.6, CPU = 3.9, memory = 2.6 (other values seem ok)

    On a desktop system (Core 2 Duo E6600 + 2 x 1 Go PC-6400 (DDR2-1066), integrated Intel graphics) I get: -.

Overall = 3.8, CPU = 5.3, memory = 5.6 (limited by the integrated graphics card)

    On a non-Toshiba laptop (PM - 1.8 GHz, 2 x 1 GB);

    CPU = 3.8, memory = 4.0

So the laptop with a CPU and RAM much slower, much slower than the M400 better scores for memory and about the same for the processor.

One thing I've seen, is that Vista described the experience index as "not rated". If I manually run WinSAT still see errors about "RDTSC to QPC is too high."

Anyone else see the RDTSC to QPC delta error? The index of the experience you get?

I have to say that I compared the performance of the M400 with SiSoft Sandra running two XP Vista & under Vista Sandra reports a little less than half the performance of XP on all measures.

    Mike

    Hello Mike

What to say? A lot of people are disappointed by the performance of Vista. I have to be honest and say that this fact surprised not at all.

I have this phone small and Nice, but you should try to optimize the operating system on your own needs and also to disable all the stuff you n t need for your work. Maybe you shouldn't focus on this score of Vista but try to optimize the system to run stable and quite fast for you.

BTW: have you updated the BIOS to the latest version 3.20?

  • Portege M400: Why am I not asked a password at startup?

    Hello

I have a Portege M400 and I used the Toshiba security software help put in place a the BIOS boot password, but also a protection of HARD drive password. This software, as well as the true BIOS (Esc + F1 at startup) show that the password I set is recorded or recognized.

However, I'm not really asked any of these passwords when I start the computer.

I have a system to dual-boot with the original WinXP for Tablet PC on one of the partitions and one Feisty Ubuntu on another. My boot loader is GRUB, but I do not understand why this should affect the behavior of the BIOS which should arrive before calling the bootstrapper...

Can someone help me with this? It would be really important for me to protect my BIOS and the hard drive.

    Thanks in advance,
    dsokus

    1. check your security settings with password for Toshiba utility. Are these these configured correctly?
2 you have the user or supervisor password? If you only set the supervisor password that you are not prompted for the password.
    3. try to put the HDD and user pw in the initial bios setup (press ESC when prowering on).

  • Portege M400 little startup

I have been actively using my Portege M400 for almost 2 years. A few months
There he began to become less easier to start the
laptop. When I turn it on, the following occurs:
    * The screen remains black and does not display anything
    * The power LED flashes either yellow or light green
    * The HDD LED flashes once for a 1/10 of a second and remains off, or is not light up at all
    * Sometimes the fan started working very actively and very strong
The only thing I can do with it is to stop the laptop and try
Once again. Sometimes it starts after the first attempt, but sometimes I
you have to try up to 10 times.
Here's a video showing the behavior described above:

Any ideas that is this all? Maybe I should cleap laptop computer inside, especially the fan?

It is not easy to say with certainty what the problem is here, but please try to follow:
Disconnect any external devices connected to your laptop, remove the battery and try to turn it on with power current only.

    Please post the result.

  • Portege M400 HDD - password and drive upgrade questions

    2. If a secondary hard drive is mounted, it is possible to run the DVD writer as an external Bay? y at - it a connector / converter available?

    3. If Toshiba RAID mirroring is enabled, this speed of disk read time? for example reading speeds could theoretically be doubled by interlacing readings on the two disks - what is the difference of real world performance?

    4. are there restrictions on the internal hard drive?
I bought a new hard drive from Toshiba (MK1234GSX / 120 GB) and mounted in secondary drive Bay, it works, I cloned the existing overall hard drive and it is even possible to boot from the secondary drive and see both drives.
However if I replace the internal drive with the new drive, I can see the drives in the bios, but blue-screens of windows at startup: error seems to be that windows does not find the disk...

When I add the original disk to the secondary drive Bay and start since I also can't get windows to recognize the new drive.
This doesn't seem to be a simple problem of windows, because windows is happy to start on the new drive in the high Bay, so I ask if there is some restrictions at the end of Windows...

5 Why have saved my Portege M400 website it says: "sorry, but this product is not available in your region."

    Thanks for any advice,
    Jonathan

1.) as far as I know the HARD drive password can be changed in the BIOS
But beware, if you forget or type the HARD drive HARD drive password will be locked and you will not be able to access the HARD disk. In this case, the HD is not more usable.

(2.) the Ultra Slim bay is a single drive bay that welcomes the reader of CD/DVD or a secondary HARD disk.
The extension utility from Toshiba Mobile allows the insertion of hot of these modules.
I found this info in the user manual and following modules can be installed in the Bay ultra slim:
-Ultra Slim adapter HARD drive Bay: this will allow you to install a HARD drive in option
-Kit ultra Slim bay DVD-ROM drive or DVD super multi drive kit
    -Disk (SATA) HARD drive kit
The adapters you will need to order of the ASP

(3.) I did not notice any differences in speed reading while the RAID has been enabled or disabled. (I used the Qosmio G20 with RAID)

4.) Please check the manual for compatible HARD drive sizes!

5.) maybe the M400 is not available in your country or region. But it s only my suggestion

  • Tecra M4 or Portege M400: notice required

    Hello
I plan on buying a tabletPC and close to 100% chose Toshiba. Prices seem to be ok. But I still don't know what to choose - Portege M400 or Tecra M4.

The M400 is power supply newer batteries, lighter, longer, and I have a Core Duo cpu. However, I use programs like Photoshop, AutoCad, 3ds max, Corel and so on.

Is that the Intel chip is sufficient for these purposes? The M4 has GF Go6600 GPU which I'm sure is ok.

Help, please! Thanks for the tips!

    Hello

I studied a bit in the internet and found some data about the M4 Tecra and Portege M400.
It seems that Tecra has been delivered with a different hardware configuration.
You can purchase the Tecra with CPU Intel-Pentium-M (Dothan) 760, 740, 750, 730 1.6 GHz, 1.73 GHz, 1.86 GHz, 2.0 GHz and 2 different graphics cards: nVIDIA GeForce FX Go6200 64 MB or 128 MB nVIDIA Go6600.
Also, there are different sizes of HARD drive; 40, 60 and 80 GB
    The screen is 14.1 "(1400 x 1050)."

The same thing on the Portege M400. It has also been configured with different CPUs:
    Intel Core 2 Duo (Merom) processor T7400, T7200, T5600, T5500.
The graphics card is a bit slower because it s a graphics card memory sheared.
But you know, if you're not a hardcore game player, so you don't need a graphics card performance. The size of the screen is a bit smaller. Its 12.1

I think that if you like little notebook so the M400 is not a bad choice.

But you know s of your choice and you must know what you want to buy.
But I like more the Portege unit

  • Portege Z930-146: BSOD running Win 7 64 bit - support pointers and advice

    Hello

First post following the latter (academia / business) purchase of a Portege Z930-146 (serial number XC141056H, short PT235E part number).

Configured the pre-installation software 64 - bit W7, local installed, delivery to the primary user (the boss).

User reports 3 BSOD in a few days - I have the mini-decharges and made first order analysis using blue-screen display:

    PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA (ntoskrnl.exe)
    SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (dxgkrnl.exe)
    MEMORY_MANAGEMENT (ntoskrnl.exe)

We really are the guys from UNIX, so it is not familiar territory.

I just updated the BIOS but now have a long (50 +) list of possible drivers also be updated. One at a time to download and install?

I ran the diagnostics memory and disk - without errors or warnings that are reported.

Can someone identify a likely problem, or direct me gently in the direction of the road to official support of Toshiba please or suggest next steps?

    Thank you in advance,

    GLM

Ntoskrnl.exe is a Microsoft kernel boot and the dxgkrnl.exe seems to have something to do with the chart.

I recommend to check if the update of the display driver would improve the performance of the system.
Then visit the Toshiba UE driver page, select the Satellite Z930 PT235E and download the latest display driver Intel.
Z930-146 was equipped with chip Intel HD Graphics 4000, so you need the Intel driver.

You can also try to download the driver directly from the Intel page since they always provide the latest version.

  • Portege M400: Is it possible to use the resolution 1400 x 1050 on external monitor?

The Portege M400 SXVGA (i.e. 1400 x 1050) can support 1400 x 1050 via analog / external monitor? I ask this question because I can't do! Most importantly, he is happy to provide, even if the monitor is a TFT 1400 x 1050 screen is 1280 x 1024.

I downloaded the latest Intel drivers and screen drivers, and although the o/s reports screen as being happy to show 1400 x 1024, it is not an option when selecting the resolutions.

    Is this a known issue?
    It is corrected using digital?
    Am I stupid?

    Hello

I'm not 100% sure but I think that that it will not support a higher resolution. In my opinion, it is according to the performance of the graphics card and the resolutions supported and not according to the used port.

    Hello

On the European driver Toshiba page, you will find all the Vista drivers required for a Portege M400.
There is also a Support Button driver and this driver allows you to customize and TOSHIBA special button preset settings.
There is also a Tablet PC for Vista Extension Package!
This package installs a range of important public services and contains this apclations:

TOSHIBA Rotation utility: Set the orientation of the screen by default as the system to be used in the transition from the PC to Tablet mode, or vice versa.

TOSHIBA Tablet PC buttons driver: You can dedicate the buttons on the tablet to perform common tasks so that you can easily use your tablet PC away from your workstation. For example, you can dedicate a button to open a program or to change the orientation of your screen.

TOSHIBA accelerometer utilities: These utilities are a set of material utilities that work with the integrated motion sensors you machine. With the accelerometer, your machine will be able to detect how you're holding it at one point. You can set the machine to perform a specific function when the device is tilted quickly left or right, either at the front or back. You can also take control of the cursor in some applications and move by leaning the PC in a certain direction

  • Portege M400 - Vista installation under the version of BIOS 1.80

    Hello

I came to the decision to install vista on my M400. I upgraded my BIOS to 3.40. However, I really only want the quiet fan so I was wondering if it was possible to run Vista under BIOS v1.80 and, if so, whether it would impact performance in any way.

AFAIK Portege M400 (PPM40) is supported in Vista, but I don't really know what will happen with fan and noise. Just testing everything. If you don't like Vista, you can install recovery image at any time again.

Toshiba Flash Cards crashes on Vista when windows is configured to use the standard color scheme "windows" under appearance settings, (for your information, I prefer to use this mode, vista runs faster, uses less energy and less ram system in this mode).

However, he does not plant immediately, on the contrary, it seems to crash whenever I flip the screen (which happens quite often that I m using a tablet pc) with the version previous software it crashed at startup but which seems to have been fixed with this version, although not completely, but when it blocks it completely will not close even if I force the Task Manager to end the process (rather than just the) Task).
