Portege M400: Matter of time life battery

Hello
I am looking to buy a tablet PC - was having a look at Portege M400 and model Tecra T7. Although the battery life would be tolerable, I suppose it depends on how you have configured the computer and how to use it - and I'd certainly a margin of safety for more than 5 hours (3 on the tecra). These models have the ability to swap a new battery in and out easily, or install a second battery to increase life expectancy?

Thank you
Jonathan

  • Portege M400: Black screen from time to time

    Hello!

I have a little problem with my Portege M400 Tablet PC. The laptop runs great most of the time. Unfortunately, from time to time, the screen goes all black - or to be more precise, the screen shows up again. In most cases, the display has been disabled by my energy saving profile, and when I try to put the screen back on (for example by moving the slider or press any key, just like usual), the screen remains black. I see that the computer works and I can for example hibernate the computer, but even after waking up, the screen is always black. Also, it does not help to change the power profile or output or anything - the screen remains like that until I restart the computer.

I have the new bios 1.80 (because of the better fan control) and I updated the Intel chipset drivers already (I've had the problem before, so it is not the update of drivers). Any idea that he might be, perhaps the bios (it was the first thing I installed after the purchase of the laptop I knew before the fan will be strong otherwise).

    Hello Alex

I found interesting article from Microsoft about this problem. Please check under http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917332/en-us

Of course, you must install Windows XP KB917332 on your device. This should help.

    Good luck!

  • Question on the working time of battery on Portege R500-12 s

    Hello

We have a R500-12 s - Core 2 Duo U7700 1.33 GHz - 12.1 "TFT bought a few months running windows XP and it never watch a few hours of battery life remaining on the same XP battery indicator after a charge complete.

This happens with the power plan best setting for the life of the battery under XP.
I note that the Toshiba sales presentation text mentions a LIF battery of up to 8.5 hours, but can anyone else advise what dead battery they see leaving their R500?

I put a battery calibration program in control panel/menu start - everyone has one? Thanks in advance.

    Hey Buddy

You mean you want to run the laptop on battery for more than 8 hours?  :|
Sorry, but I can't believe that I doubt that this is possible using the standard battery.

AFAIK the R500-12 was equipped with the battery of 3 cells 2900mAh.
Maybe you can run Notepad longer with a battery of stronger but I n t think only a 3a battery enough power for 8 hours.

Visit the Web of Toshiba Options & accessories and you should find some stronger batteries for this laptop.

    Good bye

  • Portege M400 little startup

I have been actively using my Portege M400 for almost 2 years. A few months
There he began to become less easier to start the
laptop. When I turn it on, the following occurs:
    * The screen remains black and does not display anything
    * The power LED flashes either yellow or light green
    * The HDD LED flashes once for a 1/10 of a second and remains off, or is not light up at all
    * Sometimes the fan started working very actively and very strong
The only thing I can do with it is to stop the laptop and try
Once again. Sometimes it starts after the first attempt, but sometimes I
you have to try up to 10 times.
Here's a video showing the behavior described above:

Any ideas that is this all? Maybe I should cleap laptop computer inside, especially the fan?

It is not easy to say with certainty what the problem is here, but please try to follow:
Disconnect any external devices connected to your laptop, remove the battery and try to turn it on with power current only.

    Please post the result.

  • automatically optimize for costs of life battery batt to 100% within the parameters of the power manager

In the settings of my ThinkPad Power Manager W530, I chose the option "automatically optimize for life battery" (battery-> maintenance-> Mode of Charge of the battery). Nevertheless, he always fresh and keeps the battery at 100%. Is it normal for a battery 9 cells?

    Link to photo

But many articles and discussions here at the forum State, actually in charge at 100% is not tor good battery life (see for example this article http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Welcome-FAQs-Knowledge-Base/How-can-I-increase-battery-life-ThinkPad/ta-... ). Do not miss anything?

    Thank you!

No matter how many charge cycles the battery on it, just the time where you change the batteries maintenance mode. If you have configured to maximize battery life, the battery may charge at a lower percentage (somewhere around 90%, more or less a few percentage points), but will show this figure as "integral" or 100% for the system. If you change the mode to load completely, then the maximum capacity will change to read the actual capacity of the battery.

The only way your situation would be a concern if, after setting the battery in order to maximize the battery life, then using the system on battery and load up once again, the battery always charged up to the full 94 w/h instead of reducing the number.

  • Portege M400 and Vista - load PSD ends with crash

I am an owner of a Portege M400 (PPM40E) and recently upgraded my Vista operating system. All new drivers work very well except for the * TPM *. Here's what's happening.

There's nothing wrong with the installation of security platform. I can create a disc to ensure personal (PSD), load and unload until the first time I got disabling my computer.
After each attempt to load the PSD is answered by an accident. Two seconds after the sending of password, I get a blue screen that informs me the source of the problem: * PFN_LIST_CORRUPT *, a memory dump file is created and the system restarts.

Anyone facing this problem? Does anyone know how to restore data from a backup manually the PSD created? The Restore dialog box does not accept the * .fsb file.

It would be great if someone could help me with this as I have not 'clear' backup files that I had stored on the DSP.

    Thanks in advance,

    Rob

    Hello

I googled a little and found details of error PFN_LIST_CORRUPT.
NFP: Page frame number and describes the sharing of individual images of main memory where the driver running or orders of this application.
If an application or driver is beyond this scope, then a BSOD will appear.

Here are a few tips and proposals to solve this problem I found on an external Web page:
-updated the BIOS and set the default settings
-reinstall and update the display driver, audio driver, LAN driver, etc.
    -Reinstall the security help,
    -update the Windows operating system

In the worst cases, this problem could be caused by a malfunction of the RAM, and in this case, the RAM modules should be replaced.

Sorry, but I didn't find more info on this issue.

  • Equium M50-164: Question about timer use & battery fan

    Hello!!

Just put your hands on my laptop equium m50-164 today and I wanted to clarify a few issues

    first of all,

I flashed my bios with the latest version and after restarting, fan kicks at full power and has not extinguished until I put the laptop in standby mode, this seemed to fix the problem but fan seems suddenly in much more than compared to before, fortunately the fan isn't the one 100% , but more like 15-20% every 30 seconds or one minute then goes into silent mode the fan does not reach 100%, unless I have do a reboot :),.

I know the fan will accelerate faster based on the use of the processor (thermal) etc. but is this normal? I talked to support and they wanted me to have an immediate replacement, but I said that I would wait a few days to see if she could calm :)

and finally looking at the electricity meter and other software tools there seems to be no calibration of the battery, with previous laptops, I noticed that numeric calculations are made based on the use of the battery and time [i.e. a timer] but with this laptop that I kind find a timer - I would of thought tha any computer laptop has this facility today!

    any advice would help

    see you soon

    Ephid0r UK

    Hi ephid0r

If the Toshiba service makes an instant replacement if you should take it.
Maybe there's something wrong with the hardware or software.

But as Feliks has suggested, you must first reinstall the Toshiba Power Manager.
This utility is responsible for the CPU and the cooling module activations.

PS: The time of battery life indication occurs if you move the cursor over the icon of standby power.

  • Portege M400 - batteries do not charge

I recently bought a Portege M400 via a website selling popular auction, and all right, except that the battery won't charge. The LED does not illuminate and the machine is therefore not portable.
I bought a spare battery, but that does not work either.
This is clearly the laptop that has the problem, is there a simple solution?

It must have been OK once!
    Thanks for any help.

In my opinion, there is no simple solution because the battery charging is managed by the electronic Board (ESF) and I'm afraid that you need professional help.

  • Re: Question about the CD/DVD player for Portege M400

I have a Portege M100 - and the CD-ROM drive does not work.

Whenever I put a disc in I can just hear the motor turn the disc, but the computer is not picking up the drive. Device Manager picks up flawless.

It doesn't seem to be any firmware for this sorting (or am I wrong).

I've seen a DVD player for a M400 on ebay and I was wondering if that would take on my M100.

Before buying it, I was wondering if anyone knew if it would be compatible. It seems to be OK size wise, but I was wondering if my Portege M100 XP would be able to use it.

  • Portege M400 - cannot use full 4 GB of RAM

I installed two modules of KTT667D2 / 2G on my laptop (Portege M400-103, part No. PPM40E - 012018 G 3) - total do 4 GB. However, the two original Windows XP Tablet and Ubuntu 9.04 are unable to see all 4 GB - they see 3.2 GB only.
The BIOS displays the amount properly - 4096 Mb.
I also tried to solve the problem of updating the BIOS to the latest version (3.80, 30/05/08), but two operating systems (Windows and Ubuntu) see still 3.2 GB only.
    Any ideas? Thank you.

    That s nothing unusual!
That s a limitation of 32-bit. All operating systems 32-bit (no matter if it is Vista, XP or Linux) can manage 3.2 GB max.
Only a 64-bit OS might be able to use and recognize more than 3.2 GB of RAM

You should read a few articles about 32 bit OS and 4 GB RAM problem.

  • Portege M400: Where to find Windows Vista 64-bit

    Hello!

I've owned a Portege M400 for a period of 3-4 months now, and I wonder if there is even one person out there who managed to get this laptop computer working under vista 64-bit.

I finally got bluetooth drivers to work, after the arrival of drivers available. But the following list does not work or I have not found drivers that work.

    -The buttons below the LCD
-Accelometer (and all the utilities like screen rotation or to do something about tilting machine)
HARD disk utility - protection (I installed Vista drivers, but they totally destroyed the machine and I had to restore system did not start after the installation of windows)
    -Fingerprint reader

And I could live if I couldn't get buttons and accelometer to work, but still it would be great that the computer laptop everything would work.

I'm starting to lose hope and I am already planning to install pirate Vista 32 bit in this laptop... Because it seems that it was a mistake to buy 64-bit ultimate. Some drivers Toshibas indicates they are pilots 'vista', but they do not yet work with the 64-bit version, which has little frustrating...

In any case if someone could help me I would appreciate it a lot! Because I'm getting slowly frustrated with this problem with vista 64-bit.

    Thanks in advance

I really understand you, but there is nothing to see! Toshiba Vista 64-bit drivers are not available on the Toshiba page. Nothing!

Of course, you can use a Vista 64 bit on laptops, but you will get not all 64-bit drivers. Maybe more later but not at this time!

So either you will switch back to Vista 32 bit or you need to use this notebook without 64-bit drivers. But this is not recommended

  • Shutdown in Vista with a Portege M400 problems

    Hello!

I have a problem with my Toshiba Portege M400 (do not know if it is a matter for the Council of vista or portege support plate, anyway). I installed Vista Express Upgrade a few months ago and everything worked fine for a while.
But over the last 4 weeks, my laptop seems to have a problem when stopping down. No matter if she's just hibernates or shuts down completely, the computer automatically turns itself after being off for about 5 seconds.
I have to use the switch to turn it off again (and then it stays off). Any ideas? I haven't changed anything and it could be a hardware problem, but my guess is that it has something to do with Vista ;)

    Thank you

    Alex

    Hello

installed some software or tools/applications/updates? Sometimes, a small update can disrupt the entire system and preventing it from functioning. So, just check what has been installed and it may be useful to install the new bios, maybe update all drivers etc... Make sure that everthing is real and up to date.

  • Portege M400 - Vista installation under the version of BIOS 1.80

    Hello

I came to the decision to install vista on my M400. I upgraded my BIOS to 3.40. However, I really only want the quiet fan so I was wondering if it was possible to run Vista under BIOS v1.80 and, if so, whether it would impact performance in any way.

AFAIK Portege M400 (PPM40) is supported in Vista, but I don't really know what will happen with fan and noise. Just testing everything. If you don't like Vista, you can install recovery image at any time again.

  • Boot Portege M400 problem

    Hello world!

I had this Portege M400 for nearly 2.5 years and never met with such a problem.

When I press the power button / stop * HDD led light turns on, then WiFi and then suddenly the HARD drive off * and the rest in this way: (.) Eventually, the Toshiba logo appears at the same time. I thought that problem disc HARD just to know that after 90 degrees my laptop WHAT HDD led start flashing again. Eventually, Windows loads at startup animation it would 'safe' return to normal position and expected to start Windows.

so, I suppose the problem is somehow related to the accelerometer, is it? I don't get these gels after Windows starts. Currently I have version 3.8 BIOS and installed Windows 7 Pro...

It's really starting to annoy me - people look at me funny, as I switch my cell phone 90 degrees :-)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance!

    Best regards

    Hello

Maybe it has something to do with laptops HDD?
Maybe the head of HARD drive cannot be moved correctly and the vertical position allows to get the drive moving head again
Unfortunately, I've never seen such strange behavior for laptop and so I can give you a few personal suggestions.
In my view, that the HARD drive should be checked at the first maybe the problem could be solved in replacement of HARD drive

  • Portege M400. Update BIOS 1.8 V

Did someone tried this new update?
I was put off by the wording of the disclaimer.
It seems that in order to reduce the continuous fan use the price to pay will be a hot computer.
Which will affect the life expectancy of computer?
Also, as is an update of "stand alone", is it possible to undo changes and revert to a previous version if necessary?
Finally, the increase of heat on the base of the unit going to do uncomfortable to work with in the form of tablets?
    Thanks for the feedback.

    Hello

I found the news that Toshiba has designed a new BIOS update special V1.80W with improved noise in "idle" mode and low CPU load mode. This should help and the Portege M400 will run very quietly. It is possible that the low FAN speed will result in higher temperatures on the palpable user as palm rest or base of coverage. It will probably be a few degrees Celsius, but nothing serious.
