  Looks like the drive will need to be replaced. Reason to be after you restored and still the same problem of reading is then laser most likely has it reache use life. Reader of OD aren't so expensive that it just make sure yours is Sata connections and must match any player you just have to remove your plate and put it on the new drive and that will resemble nothing has changed.

  However, the issue of the update with MediaSmart DVD is well known, so I would really say that replacement by the version of HP from Cyberlinks PowerDVD 10 that seems to be a much better solution. You can install this software as follows.

  First, download the latest installer for this on the link below and save it in your downloads folder.

  Once the download is complete, open windows control panel, open programs and features, make a right click the entry for HP MediaSmart DVD and select uninstall - when this process is complete, restart the laptop.

  When windows has completely recharged, open your download folder and double-click the installer for PowerDVD 10 start the installation.  Once this done, see if your Blu - ray disc now plays OK.

  When you insert a blu - ray disc, open Explorer and click on the optical drive and tell me if you are able to read the contents of the disc. If you are, then the drive is fine but you need an application to read any blu ray movies. If you can not read the contents of disc, I suggest Dell diagnostics running on the drive with a blu - ray disc in the drive and perform the test of READING.

Found on another forum that everything I had to do was clear existing comics, data on the USB plugged in the back, and the problem has been resolved. Initially, I unplugged the USB but found that erase BD was the simplest solution. (BD data is accessible in the video menu loading no BD - Rom)

  bit of a newbie on laptops but my Qosmio dvd player won't play Blu - ray movies using the "Toshiba DVD Player", although it will play normal DVD movies no problem. I use the wrong software? search through programs pre-installed, I as ' nt seem to find those related to playback of a blue-ray disc! Or the problem would be something to do with not having the correct drivers?   I'm playing a Blu - ray (Dexter season 6) most recent title thanks to the program "HP TouchSmart DVD", and it does not work. He asks me if I want to check for an update of the software when I try to read the disc. In the past when this has happened, the update allowed me to read the disc, but I seem to already have the latest version of the software (4.1.5122). He can't find the updates, and I found no updates through manual searches on the internet.

  I can still play other Blu - ray discs. Scott Pilgrim just jumped in, and it worked fine.

  Y at - it a newer version of the software out there? Or do I have to wait longer for an update? I guess the other possibility is that the drive is faulty, but based on my story with this question, I would say that the obsolete software is a more likely cause.
