  • Dell PowerEdge 840

I have a PowerEdge 840 Server with 2 SATA drives inserted.  Both are blank discs.  When I turn on the server, I finally get to a point where I get the message:

    BMC Setup "press."

Strike F1 to Christine boot, F2 for Setup utility.

I press F1 and I don't see anything unusual.  So I escape and he returned finally to the same place.

Just before what the server was very good start.  One of the other server tech in our Church (we are a small organization with the support of volunteer) removed the SAS drives that have been configured in Raid 1 and replaced by SATA drives and he said that it reset the Configuration of SAS utility make it RAID 0.  I'm not familiar with the SAS 5 configuration utility so I don't know how to check if he did properly but it seems that this error now appears after doing the unusual changes.

How can I solve this problem?

    Thank you v e

I'm not sure that understand the problem... it does not start the operating system? With blank discs, it shouldn't, right? In addition, change the RAID configuration would mean that it should not. Sorry if I'm missing something, but it seems that the work is half done and the operating system must be reinstalled or a restored backup.

Also, if it's not too late (looks like that's not), do not use RAID 0. Configure RAID 1 instead.

  • PowerEdge 840 Dell diagnostics on HDD utilities, even on the cd?

When the PowerEdge 840 Server starts, you can press F10 for "Mode Utility" which charge a diagnostic tool which seems to be a score of 57 pre-created MB. We also got the CD with the server, 'diagnosis and service systems","Drivers and utilities", etc.

These CDs contain the same on that pre-installed diags utility on the hard drive? In other words, can I just wipe all of your hard drive and install linux instead, and when necessary, run the diagnostics from the CD? (although I suppose that by pressing F10 doesn't work then). Or should I keep this partition with utilities.

There is also a 2.2 GB empty partition. Which is necessary as well? For example the utility from the 57 MB partition should the other 2.2 GB partition for temporary files, or something?

  • 5.4 OpenManage cannot initialize new disks PowerEdge 840

I'm bored of Array Manager. I think Openmanage is a poor substitute.

I have a new Dell PowerEdge 840 Server with two disks SAS and SAS 5i/R controller of berries in a mirror Raid-1 (made in hardware)

I have installed OpenManage 5.4 WITH the storage option.

I put two new hard drives SAS I want to initialize and create another virtual disk of Raid-1.

OpenManage sees the drives (loans and OK but not online) and gives me two options under tasks "Blink" and "Unblink.

Now when I put two drives in my component Snap Server PowerEdge 1600SC Array Manager 3.6 MMC 3 years, I could create a virtual disk from the operating system.

What happens with Array Manager. Why he let do this to me?

What is going on? Why can't initialize new disks and create a virtual disk?

It comes to my main server. I can't take it offline for 10 hours initialize disks.

I went into Windows disk management and that he sees the drives but I don't want a Software Raid.

    Thank you

  • PowerEdge 840: USB keyboard and mouse not working not.

    Hello everyone.

Yesterday, I pursached a used Dell Poweredge 840 to function as a backup server, I'm having a few problems with it but I can't understand.

I installed the server with Windows Server 2003 x 86 edition and downloaded the drivers on the Dell site. It works perfectly, except for one problem:

USB keyboards and mouse refuse to work.

PS/2 works fine however, but any USB keyboard or mouse will not work.

Flash USB drives read very well, therefore I used to recover some files on the machine before, but it was connected to the network, USB keyboard and mouse do not work.

They are not recognized at startup and do not allow to enter the setup of the BIOS after Windows has started, that they are not always recognized. Windows displays the device as unknown device.

I tried to boot from a live CD of 14.04 Lubuntu, in which the USB keyboard and mouse do not work either. Only PS/2 wants to work.

I have tried different types of USB mouse:

    • Microsoft mouse
    • Acer OEM mouse
    • Mouse laser Logitech M-U0007

None of them could work, although they work fine on my laptop, the main file server which is a model of HP and Dell Optiplex desktop computer.

I tried a few different USB keyboards as well, but they refuse to work.

I ended up borrowing a pair of keyboard and mouse PS/2 to configure the server, but I want it to work with my USB keyboard and mouse.

Just for the record: the USB flash drives do not work very well, it's just the keyboard and mouse is not working.

Anyone know how I can get there?

    Thanks in advance,

    Dominique

    Hello.

Unplug all devices connected to the USB and PS/2 ports. Unplug the AC power cable, wait about 1 minute and then press in and hold the button for about 15 seconds. Reconnect the power and power on the server. Connect the keyboard and mouse to the USB ports and try again.

  • Can I load windows vista or 7 on this PowerEdge 840?

Hey guys, first time, coming through a device like this. PowerEdge 840

Serial number: Service tag removed by privacy policy > | Express service code: abducted by the Express service code privacy policy >

I read the manual, but still confused, can I load win7 on this machine? It can work as any ordinary windows machine?

So I went into the boot options and selected the dvd as the first player, but it just goes straight to windows server 2003. Something up with this device in any case, whenever I have manually close it restarts and the fan is very noisy? Is this way, it is supposed to work, or it is supposed to be silent?

There is 3x73GB readers in this machine and there is 2 pci cards connected to a smal circuit located at the rear of the 3 HARD drive, what can I do here in order to bypass this RAID system to connect a HARD drive to load windows OS please?

The connector on the disks look like regular SATA connectors but the description on the Maxtor disk reads:

    ATLAS 10K V, 3.5 SERIES

    73 GB Serial Attached SCSI

They are not SATA disks? If not and I can use a SATA drive, do I have to remove 3 disks and place a SATA drive in one of the slots?

You might be able to install Windows 7, but NO server has been tested and validated to run no matter WHAT client operating system. They are tested and developed for the server operating system. That said, it doesn't mean it won't work, but you will need to use the drivers 2008R2.

Servers are not supposed to be quiet, but as part of the POST, the fans turn loudly when first energized. If they do not ramp down to a 'normal' speed, there may be a problem with the fans, sensors or environment (or the lid can be turned off).

Make sure there is a check mark next to the DVD drive... means it is enabled. Also, how did you create your Windows media?

You can install Windows with a RAID System... you just need drivers. What model of controller RAID do you have?

SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) are not the SATA drives, but SAS controllers/cables/funds of basket are 'retro' - compatible with SATA. You CAN put SATA drives out there, but it won't change anything. Windows will treat it the same. Windows only communicates with the controller, not directly with the player.

    Hello

It is listed on the driver page for the 840 under the section RAID SAS:

    http://www.Dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/PowerEdge-840/drivers

Here is a direct link to the download page:

    http://www.Dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=10DNJ

The Windows version of the file will be held probably in 2012, but if you have any questions you will need to create a bootable media BACK and use the hard drive of the updater version. The Setup instructions for each version are listed on this page.

    Thank you

  • PowerEdge 1900 and Poweredge 840 and NO hardware RAID SATA HD, FreeNAS with ZFS

I searched these forums and the web in general a concise my questions answer, but nothing is done.  I just happen to find someone who is using 'old' technology and it retarget as much as you might think (I am a broke student by the way).

I bought a Poweredge 1900 Server & server Poweredge 840 ebay about last year.  I've been busy and have yet to work with these two units.  I wanted to use the PE 1900 as a file server and then push a backup of these files on the server off site, the PE840.  I intended to buy four 1 TB or four disks SATA 2 to (WD Black or RED WD) for each system, respectively.

I've been through a few videos on youtube the other day and discovered FreeNAS.  This seems to be a much better solution than the use of Ubuntu Server, but it also made me think about the hardware Raid with these systems.  If FreeNAS uses ZFS (software raid controller), you want to avoid a hardware raid controller.

My current assumptions, please correct me if I'm wrong on any of the following:

I think that each of these systems to support drives up to 2 TB?, I think that I can use the SATA drives and not SAS, four discs in each system drives.

I believe that I can boot from USB flash drive (a quick, which I intend to install FreeNAS on which they recommend)

I think I can connect readers to the Perc/Raid Controller controller (& just turn 'off' RAID), or simply directly on the motherboard.  (What woud be the advantages/disadvantages of the use of the card or simply by using the Council)

I intend on working with what I have right now (cheap and available), then once I get this configuration work that I take it out of the sand/lab sandbox, upgrade the processors and ram up my budget will allow and go live with the installation program (if it is still possible)

From now on, they are sitting in a corner, begging to consume energy, and fans of polute the soundscape with their cries (PE1900 precisely).  I know that I could pursue other options but I already these two units.

I really want to utilze FreeNAS its serving capacity file and ZFS for its reliability.  Is it possible with this camera?, or should I junk them and move on?

    Thank you for your answer!

I've done some research more and since FreeNAS is built off of FreeBSD supported hardware is the same.  I couldn't find a list for FreeNAS specifically so I looked to FreeBSD.  I was still confused about the material and decided to go forward with the poweredge 840, for two reaasons, there already 8 GB of ram and it is not as heavy to move on (from 1900). I shoot the raid controller (for simplicity) and I plugged in three 250 GB SATA drives and a 40 GB SSD.  I had to set the bios for the usb key is recognized and also due to adapt to be considered as a hard drive, then had to define the sequence of boot to the usb drive, acting as a hard drive.  Once all that has been said and done, I wrote my FreeNAS image on my USB and booted up.

It took maybe 10 minutes and I was up and running (once I had configured the hardware and bios), I created a RaidZ (as proposed FreeNAS) and with my three 250 GB drives, it produced 453 GB of usable disk space.  The 40 GB SSD is used as L2ARC (from my cache of understanding), I tried the installer with and without the 40 GB SSD.  The difference was impressive, just opening the photos or streaming video on my laptop Win 8.1 (Dell 17r) is almost flawless, as if the files were stored locally.

I was impressed by how quick and easy to use FreeNAS, simple and fast network shares can be configured with permissions that works quite simply not in less than 5 minutes.  I don't have Windows Server down, but generally configuration active directory takes a little more effort.

I am satisfied for the moment and continues to experiment with the Poweredge 840 until I commit to a processor upgrade.  Once I acquire 16 GB memory for my Poweredge 1900 I will perform with her, as it has only 1 GB now, crazy.

    Thank you for your help.
