Presario 500-164. upgrade to windows 8.1

Did someone tried this upgrade with this computer.  All the problems

Are you sure that it is a Presario 500-164 and not a 500-164 Pavilion?  I can't find a reference to a Presario 500-164.

However, there is a HP Pavilion 500-164.

I bought a HP Pavilion 500-075 December 2013 with 8.0 and immediately put updated to 8.1 with no significant problems.   After the configuration of the PC and the creation of recovery disks, I searched and updated all windows updates and HP I could find, then updated via the Windows store.  Everything went very well without error, but I also had not added additional programs or applications before the update to 8.1.  I think it is clear that there is still some 8.1 problems that must be fixed with future updates from Ms.

I replaced the power supply in this area for a graphics card into the PCIE slot. I put a Nvidia 9600 GT in the box, not changed no settings, tried to start, and I get no bios and 6 beeps. Any advice?

Based on specifications, your desktop HP Pavilion 500-164 has been bundled with Windows 8 installed and has a feature called 'Secure Boot'. You must DISABLE "Secure Boot" and ACTIVATE the standby mode 'legacy' in the BIOS before the computer will start with the nVidia 9600 GT installed.

Please, remove the video card, make changes to the BIOS and turn off the computer. Then, reinstall the video card and turn on the computer. Your problem should be solved.

The problem may be the driver.  For your product, all Windows 10 drivers are pushed through Windows Update.  You can try to check for drivers that will work with Windows 10.  You can see this site as well:

  • the desktop pc Pavilion 500-164 to date of Windows 8 for windows 8.1

My dealer told me that the 500-164 Pavilion had windows 8.1.  This isn't.  Even if the Assistant on HP site says that it has not been tested, has anyone successfully done?

    Hello:

I do not have your PC but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't.

HP provides W8.1 drivers for this model on its support page.

Before moving to W8.1, I'll make sure to create the W8 recovery media so that if for some reason, something doesn't work well in W8.1, you can restore the operating system and software from the PC to its status of "out of the box.

And you should do anyway even if you do not upgrade to W8.

Check out this guide to make your W8 recovery media set.

I'll be upgrading my HP pavilions integrated HD graphics 8570 D a STRIX ASUS GeForce GTX overclocked 2 GB DDR5 128 - bit DisplayPort HDMI 1 750TI. 4 a/DVI-I graphics card. With that I also improve my diet to a Thermaltake TR2 500W 240 pins power power TR-500. I was wondering if it of ok to do on the computer and will not damage it. It is extra steps when I install these. Initially, I got the PC with windows 8 but have upgraded to windows 10.

    Hello

If the ASUS 750 TI requires a 6-pin auxiliary power connector and your computer is running a version of HP 8 BIOS then you should be OK.  Open your PC and measure to make sure that graphics card fits.  In addition, open the command RUN and enter: MSINFO32

Your computer is running a version of HP 8 BIOS?  If so, and if it is possible to install the graphics card then go ahead. Find out what the return policy is before you buy.

  • Presario CQ61-110SL: upgrade for laptop Presario CQ61-110SL from XP to Windows 7 with new SSD EVO 840

In fact on Presario CQ61-110SLI I have XP installed the Vista of origin instead.

Now I want to upgrade to Windows 7 and contestually get a new SSD Samsung 840 rather original EVO... What is the correct procedure?

    Thank you

    Hello

Thanks for posting in the Forum from HP Support.

There is no procedure to upgrade from XP to Win 7, it would be clean installation.

    1. place the SSD drive in the machine instead of the HARD disk

    2. start the installation of Win 7 disc to install Win 7 (best x 64 edition)

3 install the drivers of the machine, you can download from >here<

Windows 7 is optimized to work with SSD, there will be no problem.

If you have important data on your old HDD, you can either save it before (on external support, USB key, Cloud solution, etc.)  or after it (via a USB cable plugged into the laptop as external drive). This is also an option to transfer data.

Please, let me know if you have any other questions. Happy holidays!

  • Put the new upgrade of Windows 10 on my 500 gig SSD and make the main drive (C :)

    Original title: Windows 10

You want to install (upgrade) new Windows 7 Pro 64) Windows 10.  No problem.

Here's my question and need help.  I want to put the upgrade of Windows new 10 on my 500 gig SSD and make the main drive (C :)  Just got new PC and the SSD is not yet installed in the new machine.

Is there a way to do this?  I can install the SSD drive in the pc without problems.  But the pc is set up with the C: drive in the primary.  As I understand it, the update will work, but it will not be for the SSD.

    Suggestions?  Is this possible?

Windows 7 installation will have to be eliminated if its currently on a separate disk. Which means you have to start over.

I would first disconnect the hard drive with your Windows 7 installation.

Install the SSD drive, then install Windows Pro 10 on this subject.

Download and create a bootable copy of Windows 10 Pro:

  • 500 - 81ea: create recovery media after upgrade to windows 10

I created a USB recovery when I used my PC (using the 8.1 window)

I had a time to use it to perform a destructive restore but then had to wait for all the upgrades automatically install to get me back to where I was and of course all my other software such as iTunes and music, photos, etc.  Checking to see if I can upgrade to windows 10 I was informed that my windows was not up to date and that I didn't know the logo windows at the bottom right of the screen. I have now been in the screen of windows update and installed quite a few updates and now have the upgrade of windows application.  My question is if I upgrade to windows 10 and then must perform a full recovery can I do new media of recovery or I'll have to go back to windows 8.1 using my existing media and then updateHP software and windows 8.1 and upgrade to windows 10 and the free update will be always available or is there a way I can create new media recovery to allow me to recover Windows 10 OR an altrnative goes back to the creation of a backup drive on an external hard drive and a way to get this image on my HDD internal. OR to simply stick with windows 8.1 and hope, that it is taken in charge as long as XP was.

THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP

    JIMBO

    Hello

First things first. Don't forget that your USB stick recovery is the HP external recovery media and not just another type of recovery image. Back up your data. Check that your PC is supported by HP for Windows 10 and that your PC meets the requirements of Windows 10. If so, then be sure your Windows 8.1 system is fully patched and up-to-date with Windows and HP implemented to date.  When you make an in place upgrade W10, W10 process will have a roll back feature that will be available in case you are not happy with the W10.  I made a couple of back roller and the process was pretty quick.

  • Compaq Presario C500: Upgrade to Windows 10 Bugs

Only encountered two so far, both with workarounds, but the second question concerns a significant loss of functionality ("sleep" mode no longer works) and for which we could do with a fix:

    (i) the upgrade of Windows 10 resulted in a loss of sound, but switching to the native Windows audio driver provided a fix (see here).

(II) the number current and currently without a satisfactory solution, introduced during the recent upgrade to Windows 10 anniversary update, the laptop you wake up mode 'sleep' with a press of a key, but the keyboard stops working after that, requiring a reboot at this time. anouther user found a solution (see here) which is essentially to turn off mode 'sleep' and using hibernation instead. also while searching the Web, seems to have been a problem as far as Vista for the bit of material, the solution is to set the following check box:

Device Manager > keyboards > Standard 101/102 key or Microsoft Natural Keyboard PS/2 with HP QLB > properties > Powermanagement > allow this device to wake the computer

However, following the update of the anniversary while it is possible to set this checkbox, it is not save, go back into the dialog after setting and option is always undefined (that is a second related bug essentially, more a problem of WIndows 10 although I guess).

It would be a shame if what has been a successful computer laptop put Vista level through what is probably the most version of Windows succdessful, should gradually lose compatibility.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the problem you face is that Microsoft provides only pilots with the most basic features and what you really need for these features is the specialized drivers written for the specific in your HP PC hardware - and unfortunately, there is no driver HP Win10 for your PC. HP only guarantees the compatibility of Win10 for machines manufactured after August 2013. HP is not no matter what timetable indicating when, or IF, they will produce drivers for older machines.

You were very lucky to be able to find solutions to the problems so far, but as MS continues to be updated Win10, the situation will worsen.

This means that your PC is probably NEVER going to be fully functional under Win10 because the drivers he needs for these features simply do not exist!

    Hi @Bluto2,

    Thanks for the reply.

You can consider going back to the previous window (if the upgrade does not exceed 28 days), or wait for the updates of Windows for the driver.

  • Pavilion 500-164: motherboard replacement raises Questions

Thanks, Malygris1, for your very comprehensive answer.  Unfortunately, I'm looking forward and installed the new Board of Directors.  For those faced with replacing a motherboard HP, I will elaborate on my trip.  The most important step was in buying for the motherboard.  I have no HP, but from a dealer on Ebay.  I DID, however, carefully note the model of the motherboard AND the designated HP part number of alternatives on a small paper on the motherboard label.  The same motherboard model is used in several models of HP Office; but, if the number of HP spare parts is matched, the info on the model should be on the motherboard.

My original problems were solved with the installation of the new Council.  After a router struck by lightning, the ethernet port had stopped working, and when told to stop, or in standby mode, the machine would invariably restart.  The new motherboard solved both problems, which seem to be related to the power surge.

I installed the new Board of Directors of the Windows 10 updated 500-164 and held my breath I have it powered for the first time.  I was pleasantly surprised to see that everything looked the same as when I left it.  Recognized support assistant the new Board of Directors as part of a desktop computer 500-164.  I have not tried; but I hope that the recovery media will work, if necessary.  Malygris1, do you think that if Support Assistant recognizes the info on the model, the recovery disks will work?  I'm curious to know how it works, but, if not, no big deal, as I now have a new image Acronis 10 Windows installation, which works perfectly on the 500-164 Pavilion (without "Pitfalls", as some have reported with audio, etc. of the wireless card.).

My second concern was whether or not Windows is always activated with the installation of the new Council.  He said that he "Windows is not activated.  ... Rats and other profanity.  I know it can take time to be put in correspondence with the info from Microsoft, so I updated the bios and checked the rest of the ports for the features of the machine.  I returned in configuration/system Panel and he told me that the activation information were "unavailable" - different from the message 'not active' sooner.  I've been waiting on this screen for a few minutes and the message changed to "Windows is activated"!  I was ready to make Microsoft telephone activation and I had run a keyfinder to get the original MS product key for Windows 8 from the hard drive, but I didn't have to use both methods.

So, in summary, if you want a card mother 'replacement', shop for the exact number of spare parts HP; not only the MFG part number.  It will save you a lot of grief.  Obviously, if you want to 'upgrade' from your motherboard, all bets are off, because it's a totally different scenario with different issues to deal with.  My project was a complete success at a cost of $103 for the new motherboard and several hours of my time.
