Using a MacBook running El Capitan, can I create a bootable USB key to run Cougar?

Unless you've downloaded the OS X App Store before the publication of the Mavericks Mountain Lion, your only option is a purchase ($20USD) Cougar via the Apple store online. Once you have downloaded the OS X App Store ML using this purchase key, you can then run DiskmakerX top to make a USB bootable (8 GB min).

The current (5.0.3) of DiskMaker X version only works with the Mavericks, Yosemite and El Capitan. Mountain Lion, to the 3.0.4 version on the developers site. It provides a direct download link to it. I don't know if this old X DiskMaker work on El Capitan.

  • Tool for creating media, Windows Bootable USB key problem

Hey, when using of media creation tool to download and make N 8.1 Windows Bootable on my 64 GB Kingston, USB 3.0, the process gets all the way to the end before failing and say "sorry, something happened and we could not finish creating the flash drive in the drive I got access denied." So my question is; Why won't it work?

Use the multimedia creation tool to download and save the .iso image file. Do not use it to make the USB. This prevents you wasting time downloading Windows 8.1 and then having to redownload as the tool does the USB incorrectly. Rufus makes the Bootable USB key. Its best to use a 8-32 GB USB flash drive and FAT32 format (64 GB will be truncated to 32 GB for FAT32).

If you install in the UEFI with SecureBoot (new Security Technologies - made systems in 2012 or later systems in 2010-2011 may also have the UEFI BIOS with the latest BIOS update but the settings must be enabled) use the "GPT partition for UEFI computer scheme." Be sure to format it in FAT32 or the USB Flash drive will not start.

If you install in a legacy systems BIOS for systems without a UEFI BIOS, then use the "partition MBR BIOS laptop scheme." Its also recommended to format the Flash drive to FAT32 but not necessary for a Legacy BIOS.

See here where I demonstrate the procedure:

    Hello;

Let me welcome you on the HP forums!

According to your description, my guess is that the program that you used has replaced the boot files on the hard drive, NOT on the flash drive. Thus, your PC no longer starts.

To resolve startup problems, you need access to a PC for this phase of work in order to create the necessary support to fix your PC boot loader.

You will need to create something called a CD-ROM to repair Win7 - which you could have done for free when Win7 was working.  This will repair the boot loader files, and if that is the problem, your PC will start OK after that.

But now, which can be obtained (with supplement) from this link: http://neosmart.net/blog/2009/windows-7-system-repair-discs/

When you download this file, it will be an ISO file.

To make a CD bootable it, you will need to download and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/

Once you have installed, run, select the option "Save image to disk file" and select the downloaded ISO file and that it points to a blank CD.

To make a USB bootable of it, you will need to download and install RUFUS: https://rufus.akeo.ie/

Once you have that, it is executed in the input of the unit, use the drop down menu to select the USB stick.  Near the bottom right, where is written 'Create a bootdisk to aid', select the ISO file downloaded.
    -------------------------------------

Boot from the media that you have created and follow the instructions in this link: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/681-startup-repair.html

You will probably need to run Startup Repair three times for him to fix all the boot loader.

Once completed, your PC should start OK.

    Good luck

  • Where can I post a problem of Aspire One AO756 USB system recovery?

Hello.  Where can I post a problem of Aspire One AO756 USB system recovery?  I had a HARD drive crash, replaced the HARD drive and bought a USB (Win 8.1) on the Acer Store system recovery disk.  The USB settles all the installation files and then said to remove the USB key, then click OK to restart.  But the bios can not find a bootable disk to complete construction. I was sent a second USB drive with the same results.  The new HDD Seagate passes each Seatools test.  In addition, I can boot from USB to the DOS or Linux and access the disk without problem. Thank you

You must use diskpart. in the windows setup program, there is an option to format the partitions manually. allows to delete all partitions, and it will automatically set the MBR or GPT disk.

  • When I try to boot from a bootable usb key, his shows bootmgr missing error.

Bootmgr mising when you use a bootable usb key.

I have windows 7 nvidia 2010 on my desk. I have a new laptop with a free version of linux. my laptop do not have a CD or dvd drive to start. When I'm trying to boot from a USB bootable, his error showing that bootmgr missing. Press ctrl + alt + delete to restart. I tried sp3 and xp sp2. having the same problem with both. Kindly help.

    Hello

    1. you are trying to install Windows XP by using the bootable USB key?

Check if the sequence of the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) is set to boot to the operating system from the USB key.

For more information get in touch with the manufacturer of the system.

    Note:

BIOS change / semiconductor (CMOS) to complementary metal oxide settings can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from starting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the configuration of the BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Changes to settings are at your own risk.

  • Bootable USB drive (8 GB or more)

Well, if I want to make a bootable USB.

I know HOW to make one, but I want one that will serve as my computer such as a netbook (I'm sorry this is far from what I mean in fact).

Internet, watching the vids, messenger and mail. That's all.

I want to be able to install SOME programs on USB.

Not as you know the biggest GREAT.

    But, Firefox, software TI83/84, etc.

Now I want a USB you can reformat and use that is equal to or greater than 8 GB.

I don't want to partition the USB, I want FULL 8 concerts (or more) available to the OS

I bring this up is because I've NEVER seen a USB where you can do what amounts to more than 8 GB.

It just won't let you, so a LIST of USB that will allow you to do so, would be EXTREMELY useful.

Oh, Yes, I want to run Linux out there.

    So, if you wouldn't mind >. >...

Advise me please on the BEST version.

The last Linux, I used was redhat

I said, there has been some updates since then...

You can use the 8 GB to start Windows and Linux in row. Also, you can use Grub as bootloader to choose between the two operating systems.

You can divide the USB into Partitions as you will with the HARD drive. I think that you will have a utility to do this.

Good luck and keep us posted with your comments and attempts.

  • Trying to create a bootable USB I get message error "ISO image selected is NOT a valid ISO file.

    Questions of ISO image

I'll try to find a way to install Win 7 64 bit Pro - on multiple (without a DVD player) netbooks and thought I had found the solution using DigitalRiver to upload a picture ISO of the OS - then (using the MS Windows 7 DVD/USB tool) - create a BOOTABLE usb key?

However, yesterday I downloaded the image ISO (http://msft-dnl.digitalrivercontent.net/msvista/pub/X15-65805/X15-65805.iso)

(which, according to the website of souce was supposed to be 3 GB in size - but was 2 GB in size (WHY?)

And on the use of the tool USB - a got a message error "ISO image selected is NOT a valid ISO file"

-What this means and what I can do to work around this problem?

And, I think - that this procedure works with a "corporate license"?

Tried - same result - the file is obviously corrupt
I ended up using a previous download that works!

  • Can I create a recovery bootable USB through disk utility?

My HARD drive is dying, I can't access my Macintosh HD partition anymore and I can't reinstall OS because I SMART errors. Before the format and reinstall the attempt to load slow my computer, random errors, etc. So I definitely think that the HARD drive is near death. My plan is to replace my HDD for a Virgin SSD, I perform this task several times on computers of the victory but for MAC, I wonder how I will load the new OS. Can I make a bootable USB with the recovery partition, but on a USB key tools? Unofrtunately I have more available Mac to create the USB bootable through itunes.

My computer is the MacBook Pro (13-inch mid 2010), I have also all original packaging somewhere, if there is a CD that I can use, I certainly can get too.

    Any advice?

    Thank you!

Apple have this to do a USB installation...

Create an installer for OS X - Apple support bootable

Another option is to use the diskmakerx.com application

You must have the OS installer downloaded to make these methods of work is probably not practice on your failed drive.

Both of these options are to run a 'normal' operating system too. The recovery partition is not 'normal '.

Another option is to use the Internet recovery mode if your Mac supports...

Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery - Apple Support

On macOS recovery - Apple Support

Use wired ethernet for best results, since it will download a bootable OS & then download the installer of the OS also.

I suspect you have the update of the firmware installed to add this feature if it has been updated over the last 3 years

You may be able to generate a score of alternative recovery to another disk (such as a USB key) If you want to just "compensation of base OS.

OS X: on Recovery Disk Wizard - Apple Support

A last solution would be to clone your drive failing on an external drive (or use the new SSD in a proper case). That can be done in the modes of recovery via disk utility. Basically, you use a feature to "restore" to clone one volume to another. (I don't see clear instructions for the moment so ask if you want to pursue this option).
