problem of Time Machine with SSD external

Hello

I recently installed an external SSD connected via the port of Thunderbold to run my system (iMac 21 "mid-2011, OS X 10.11.4) via the cloned disk. Now, I want to save my data on this disk via timemachine. However, I can only address the disk drive HARD internal as target to be saved on timemachine. Also in the Options menu of timemachine external SDD drive does not appear. What can I do to change the HARD drive inside the external SDS to be saved in a systematic way to another drive to external hard drive connected via a network cable? Thanks a lot for any ideas you may have!

Best regards

Klaus

If I understand correctly what you did, the external SSD is the drive that you start the computer with. As such it cannot be too much to your Time Machine drive. Since the internal hard drive is not the boot drive, it is the logical location for backups Time Machine, which is what Time Machine. Time Machine is not 'see' the SSD external because it is the boot drive.

How to recover data from a backup Time Machine to an external drive?

I use Time Machine to back up data (photos, videos) on an external drive (drive A) to another external drive (drive/B) separate that I use for Time Machine backups. After performing a backup, the external drive (drive A) appears in TimeMachine and can I recover files that are on the external drive (A) just as I can for the files that are found on the internal hard drive.

I need to know what to do if I drop my external drive (drive A) completely and you want to recover the Time Machine backup on a new replacement drive?  When I disconnect my external drive (A) and enter the Time Machine, I don't find a way to access the files to recover.  Still... I know they are there!

  • How to set up backup Time Machine with MacBook?

    Hello community:

I wonder what is the best way to configure a Time Machine backup with a new MacBook.

Because the device has only a USB port that is also used to load, I don't really feel comfortable that I can only backup wile, the MacBook is on battery. That doesn't seem fair.

One possibility would be to use the adapter USB C AV that she can continue to charge the MacBook while being a USB hard drive is connected. But I'm not a big fan of having to deal with three cards for a simple task like a backup.

Apple promotes wireless with the MacBook. One possibility is to use a (rather expensive) Time Capsule or a NAS that takes care of Time Machine.

There are now hard drives wireless market. Does anyone have experience with these?

I'd be curious to know how you do it.

    Thank you!

Ideal for keeping backups Time Machine 'behind the scenes', you want to use the solutions SIN or Time Capsule. You can also use a 802.11ac AirPort Extreme with a USB external HD as well.

Don't forget the partial backups will occur at least once per hour after the first full backup is made to take full advantage of what offers Time Machine. Although the connection of an external disk directly to the MacBook would potentially offer the best performance of overall data transfer, it must be connected.

Unfortunately, I have no experience with hard drives wireless so I can't help you there. Because they would have to connect to the same network of Wi - Fi as the MacBook, all backups would go first the wireless AP, then, on this disc. I can only imagine the performance of data transfer to be a little dismal at best.

  • Time Machine gray on external drive

    Hello

I understand that starting with OS X Yosemite, it was possible to include an external drive for your Time Machine backup. To be clear, I don't speak _to_ an external backup drive, I am just talking like an external drive connected to always be part of your saved content.

I understand default external drives are excluded from the list, but we can count them by selecting them in Time Machine preferences by clicking on the "-" to remove it from the exclusions list. However, I have an external hard drive where I can't.

I suspect that this is because it is in the format ExFAT but wanted to confirm. Does anyone know the technical details about this?

As far as I know Time Machine do not save to the format ExFAT drives.

  • Time machine removed the external drive without warning

    Hello

I had an external hard drive with a time Machine to the top of my old macbook pro. Today I plugged my new mackbook pro and TIme Machine asked me if I wanted to use it as a return to the top. I said yes, and the process has begun. Then I saw that he had erased everything I had previously on the external hard drive...

    so I stopped immediately.

Now, my external hard drive is empty with only a couple of the new backup folders... and everything disappeared. Please help, I have all my work on this hard drive and very important documents.

    Thank you very much!

Maybe this, I used it when nothing else worked, but nothing is a bet of 100%

the more you use that drive for now more you'll destroy what could be there so disconnect now!

  • Backup using Time Machine on two external drives?

I know that time the machine supports two separate discs, but my question is:

    For example:

If I have a Pegasus RAID of 8 TB, can I use two external 4 TB to my time machine backup disks?

Time machine splits my data through the two HD?

    Thank you!

    Steve

As far as I know no, TM will not cover the files on drives.

You could create a second RAID using 2 4 to disks with older versions of disk utility (training of RAID is no longer supported in El Capitan) or via the Terminal and use it, but I recommend strongly against this. RAIDs always have additional layers of vulnerabilities, so you're much better off getting 8 or 10 TB of drives for your back - up (s) 2 back Ups always better than 1.

    Hope this helps, Greg

  • problem of time machine Airport: finder does not

    Hello

I use a time capsule from the airport. The connection works fine.

However, I was doing a few files "organized" in the records of the airport and all of a sudden the finder would not respond. I tried to 'Force quit' the finder and start again or turn off 30 seconds time capsule, but the result is the same for a few days now. When I return to my main folder in capsule, automatically the finder is unresponsive and I have to restart the finder.

One of the reasons could be that when I was doing 'organized' files (like move one folder to another, etc.) he too complicated (large files) and then the thing all jammed.

Anyway, if you guys might have a solution for me, this would not lose all my files I appreciate.

Thank you very much for your time.

    All the best,

    Florent

PS: I'm using an Imac, Yosemite, version 10.10.03

Nothing will fix itself without some spoil your files... Something has stuck at halfway between the two and is now corrupted. Unfortunately, Finder can not work around the problem... If you did this correctly, you can use disk utility to solve the problem... but you cannot run disk on TC utility because it is a network drive.

You have three choices I see...

One that suits that I listed last.

1 make the cleaning of the Terminal file. It's hard I think because you do not know which files you were moving around in time. And work of the terminal is for real experts or you can do more damage than you started with.

    2. use a windows computer connected to the CT... that sounds crazy, I know, but you will not crash explore like you do finder. Fix up (remove all the files that are half way moved). If you have been for example copy of records. (travel is not a method Apple uses... so what do you mean by moving?)

Delete the moved folder... Make sure you have all the files elsewhere of course.

    3. There is a way around that could save...

In airport utility go to the disk tab and select archive.

You need to connect a Mac to format USB stick capacity equal or superior to all the files on the TC, including backup (tell me, you need not backup)... you can't be selective. And start archiving. Once you have it on a hard drive which you can then plug your computer... you can run the utility disk on it and fix the problems before opening finder... Once you have done this... Erase the zone folder on TC and copy it to the back of the USB drive repaired. This method may work best... it will cost you a USB... BTW, which is how you should have done this...

Now the rap on the fingers. You can stop reading now...

NEVER USE A NETWORK DRIVE TO YOUR HAND WITHOUT A BACKUP FOLDERS.

When you handle files... do you not understand that each file must be copied TC - computer - TC. If you do more wireless... corruption is inevitable.

All the key files should be on the local drive... A USB plugged into the computer is fine... but active faster the better... libraries and files will end by corrupted if you use files on a network resource and access more wireless... even on ethernet, it can not not... but more wireless, it's inevitable. Apple didn't build protection in the TC to work as a file server. You use software designed for local use.

Always save... If this happened and you had the worst backups that could happen is that you need to clear the TC and copy the files back.

Keep this and you will eliminate not only a few files but loads of them... maybe all.

A time Capsule is not designed for running your files of overload... Plug in a USB key or faster in particular the iMac is great hassle since you can use in powered car and hide behind the computer... The TC is for your TM backups. Dragging files to it... you have now no way back up since the TC cannot save itself and Time Machine backup network drives impossible.

    End rap.

  • Time Machine with a 5 d Drobo

I'm sure that there is no way to do it, but I really want to tell TM to start to throw the old backups to a certain level of ability.  Say that when reached 3 TB backup, empty the oldest to make room for a new back-up.

As it is now, this depends on the size of the volume and depends on the size of the volume on hardware.  And material in the case of a Drobo is not a fixed target - the call of the use of this thing is that you can add a disc at any time, or share a big drive for a small capacity.  But it seems that I must find a giant empty place to put my backup file so I can trash the small volume and make more great news - and give them everything.  I can't understand this cleary - I'm not a nuclear engineering-, but it seems it would be an easy thing to add to the TM preferences: "remove older backups in the file size reached BLANK."

Sorry if this sounds naïve - I was up late.

No.... for better or worse Time Machine trades lack of possibilities of configuration for simplicity. He wants that the volume of backup everything himself and will eventually occupy all, after which it will start deleting older backups when it needs the space. I don't know any settings or "hacks" to accomplish what you are looking for, nor recommend it if I did. Apple may make changes to TM it any time they want. Any non-compliant change would probably break, potentially leaving you with no backup.

If you think that it would be useful, you might suggest that you describe Apple to be considered as a future enhancement. You'd have to convince them that its benefits would exceed the extra complexity, minor as is. Apple has certainly been devotes much more attention in the Almighty cloud at the expense (to me) of external storage and multiple volume support, so I think that any suggestion will probably be met with indifference. Don't let me dissuade you of if; It's a very good idea.

  • Problem of Time Machine

    Hello

I have a MacPro with a 1 to startup disk. 2/3 of it contained.

I run Smart utility every day and found that the drive has failed.

Before changing the old disk, I tried to back up to an external hard drive of 1 TB.

The external hard drive has 999,3 GB and internal drive 700 GB of files.

Chronology was told that the backup failed because there was not enough space on the external hard drive.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you

    Denis

    Mac Pro (mid-2012) - OS 10.11.1

You need a bigger hard drive. Time Machine adds approximately 20% + padding when you save. For example, my last backup was 157.7 MB. The padding, Time Machine required 2.35 GB.

  • Errors of license after recovering Time machine on an external hard drive

My internal HD failed and I'm temporarily using an external drive as my primary HD. I loaded all my data from my backup time machine external hard disk temporarily until my new mac arrives (next week). Now, I'm getting licenses 150:30 error code when I try to open Photoshop. It says restart may fix it. He has not fixed the problem. Any recommendations? I need to work on some files now and am stuck.

    Thank you!

Yes. This is very common. Photoshop should never be moved or transferred, because the license is tied to the Mac and move breaks the license.

The remedy is simple. Reinstall using your discs and don't forget to apply the updates. You will begin to 11.0.0.

  • Effect of Time Machine on SSD

I installed an SSD in my MBP and moved the old HD in bay view which I configured as a backup Time machine. Time Machine tries to save every hour, every day and every week as default (I think).

First of all, is it possible to change this to a custom schedule

Secondly, is it bad for the SSD?

See this link for instructions on how to change the interval. But while it is more attention of the user, you can turn off Time Machine, check the box to have its display icon in the menu bar and then when you feel that a TM backup is a timely idea, just select 'Back Up Now' on the TM menu. I'm doing it's once a day, or every time there is something I want to save.

Because the backup involves reading from the SSD instead of writing on it, it isn't bad for the SSD.

  • Time Machine backup to external drive connected to the TimeCapsule

I have a 3 TB TimeCapsule, that contains the my iMac TimeMachine backup. So far so good.

Now, I would like to connect an external drive to the TimeCapsule via the USB port to allow access to this drive of my iMac as well as other computers on my network. I would like to than the external to include in my Time Machine backup drive. Is it possible - by accepting that the backup of obviously only runs when the Mac is on? If this isn't the case, other methods of backup to an external drive, connected to the TimeCapsule, may be recommended?

You can do it. Time Machine it will support up to a separate folder on your backup disk. Don't forget to remove it from the exclusions list in Time Machine preferences. I don't know if others cannot see the drive connected to your computer is turned off. They may be able to mount the drive on their computer as you do on yours. Try it because I could be wrong on this matter.

  • changing disk ex hard time machine with time capsule

    Hello

I apologize for a such a basic question, but I would just check.

Ive recently bought a Capsule 3 TB to replace external HARD drive that I used for Time Machine on my rmbp.

What is the process of "disengage" the existing Time Machine drive?

I am not embarrassed to transfer my old back ups to my new time capsule, unless it is a good idea, but I would like to be able to access it on the existing drive should I need to.

I mean do 1). I turn off time machine under preferences, (2). Remove the disc previous time machine, then editing (3) Time Capsule or I missed something?

I can't find much information about it

    Thank you!

When you install the new TC for TM a dialog box will appear asking if you want to use the old and the new objectives. Just say no, and the old target is not used then deleted the plist.

It is very difficult and often fruitless old copy backup TM for the TC, so I think your plan is the right one... Start a new backup on the TC.

We recommend you make by ethernet because this backup TM base is essential to recovery then. Wireless is slow and much less reliable.

The older TM backups are always accessible by clicking on the TM icon in the dock, then select

    Browse other discs of TM.

  • Time machine shows no external hard drive

I have two external drives: USB key contains my iTunes and a 1 TB WD Passport contains photos and other files. I also have a Time Capsule I use to save them. When external drives are plugged into my Macbook USB ports all right; they back up regularly and I can see the backups after entering Time Machine.

However, when they are disconnected and I enter the time Machine I can't see them more. That concerns me. If one of these devices is lost or stolen, how they may be visible in Time Machine so I can restore?

See the info on the restoration of several partitions of Pondini.

    See Q32 here. http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html

However I would recommend that you use Time Machine to back up all your local startup disk... Carbon Copy Cloner to backup your other readers... It is able to select each drive and make another backup... Time Machine is too limited.
