Problem of Time Machine

Hello

I have a MacPro with a 1 to startup disk. 2/3 of it contained.

I run Smart utility every day and found that the drive has failed.

Before changing the old disk, I tried to back up to an external hard drive of 1 TB.

The external hard drive has 999,3 GB and internal drive 700 GB of files.

Chronology was told that the backup failed because there was not enough space on the external hard drive.

Any ideas?

Thank you

Denis

Mac Pro (mid-2012) - OS 10.11.1

You need a bigger hard drive. Time Machine adds approximately 20% + padding when you save. For example, my last backup was 157.7 MB. The padding, Time Machine required 2.35 GB.

Of course, I don't know how time Machine works. I got a 1 TB drive connected to my iMac as I have owned and have never had a problem of backup. Now, I get a warning that says that there is not enough space on my 1 TB drive to back up a computer with, in total, less than 500 GB of information on it. It makes no sense at all. How a 1 TB drive can not have enough space to back up a computer with the hard drive has only about 480 GB of stuff on it?

And what do I do to fix this? Thank you.

  • problem of time machine Airport: finder does not

    Hello

I use a time capsule from the airport. The connection works fine.

However, I was doing a few files "organized" in the records of the airport and all of a sudden the finder would not respond. I tried to 'Force quit' the finder and start again or turn off 30 seconds time capsule, but the result is the same for a few days now. When I return to my main folder in capsule, automatically the finder is unresponsive and I have to restart the finder.

One of the reasons could be that when I was doing 'organized' files (like move one folder to another, etc.) he too complicated (large files) and then the thing all jammed.

Anyway, if you guys might have a solution for me, this would not lose all my files I appreciate.

Thank you very much for your time.

    All the best,

    Florent

PS: I'm using an Imac, Yosemite, version 10.10.03

Nothing will fix itself without some spoil your files... Something has stuck at halfway between the two and is now corrupted. Unfortunately, Finder can not work around the problem... If you did this correctly, you can use disk utility to solve the problem... but you cannot run disk on TC utility because it is a network drive.

You have three choices I see...

One that suits that I listed last.

1 make the cleaning of the Terminal file. It's hard I think because you do not know which files you were moving around in time. And work of the terminal is for real experts or you can do more damage than you started with.

    2. use a windows computer connected to the CT... that sounds crazy, I know, but you will not crash explore like you do finder. Fix up (remove all the files that are half way moved). If you have been for example copy of records. (travel is not a method Apple uses... so what do you mean by moving?)

Delete the moved folder... Make sure you have all the files elsewhere of course.

    3. There is a way around that could save...

In airport utility go to the disk tab and select archive.

You need to connect a Mac to format USB stick capacity equal or superior to all the files on the TC, including backup (tell me, you need not backup)... you can't be selective. And start archiving. Once you have it on a hard drive which you can then plug your computer... you can run the utility disk on it and fix the problems before opening finder... Once you have done this... Erase the zone folder on TC and copy it to the back of the USB drive repaired. This method may work best... it will cost you a USB... BTW, which is how you should have done this...

Now the rap on the fingers. You can stop reading now...

NEVER USE A NETWORK DRIVE TO YOUR HAND WITHOUT A BACKUP FOLDERS.

When you handle files... do you not understand that each file must be copied TC - computer - TC. If you do more wireless... corruption is inevitable.

All the key files should be on the local drive... A USB plugged into the computer is fine... but active faster the better... libraries and files will end by corrupted if you use files on a network resource and access more wireless... even on ethernet, it can not not... but more wireless, it's inevitable. Apple didn't build protection in the TC to work as a file server. You use software designed for local use.

Always save... If this happened and you had the worst backups that could happen is that you need to clear the TC and copy the files back.

Keep this and you will eliminate not only a few files but loads of them... maybe all.

A time Capsule is not designed for running your files of overload... Plug in a USB key or faster in particular the iMac is great hassle since you can use in powered car and hide behind the computer... The TC is for your TM backups. Dragging files to it... you have now no way back up since the TC cannot save itself and Time Machine backup network drives impossible.

    End rap.

  • problem of Time Machine with SSD external

    Hello

I recently installed an external SSD connected via the port of Thunderbold to run my system (iMac 21 "mid-2011, OS X 10.11.4) via the cloned disk. Now, I want to save my data on this disk via timemachine. However, I can only address the disk drive HARD internal as target to be saved on timemachine. Also in the Options menu of timemachine external SDD drive does not appear. What can I do to change the HARD drive inside the external SDS to be saved in a systematic way to another drive to external hard drive connected via a network cable? Thanks a lot for any ideas you may have!

    Best regards

    Klaus

If I understand correctly what you did, the external SSD is the drive that you start the computer with. As such it cannot be too much to your Time Machine drive. Since the internal hard drive is not the boot drive, it is the logical location for backups Time Machine, which is what Time Machine. Time Machine is not 'see' the SSD external because it is the boot drive.

This isn't my problem right away well. Their backup disk was on his last breath so that I had to get a new and Time Machine hangs first various office applications, which I excluded, now it's of iDVD. I tried that it excludes everything first, but Time Machine has always tried to save. Given that my parents don't use it and it is no longer supported then I thought to uninstall. I deleted the program and demand corresponding is support the file and did a search in the Finder for all of the remaining files. No, zip.

However, Time machine is still backing up files which I can't find for the life of me. He would make iDVD themes 1, 2, 3, etc. I can't exclude in Time Machine because he's not here. I deleted the partial backups each time and it keeps immediately suspended 19,25 GB on iDVD.

  • How do say I have this external hard drive more Time machine?

I keep all my personal documents on an external drive that is still connected to my Mac via USB. For the purpose of this question, we will call it this disc "Lagavulin".

In addition, I have a Time Capsule. Time Machine is configured to record its backups on the time Capsule.

TimeMachine performs regular backups of my complete system, including the operating system, applications and settings internal to the Mac disk, as well as my personal documents that are on the external hard drive "Lagavulin".

A few weeks ago "Lagavulin" behaved erratically, so I bought a new external drive to replace it. Let's call it "Ardbeg.

I have all my files from "Lagavulin" to 'Ardbeg' in reverse. Then I threw it "Lagavulin" in the Trash because his performance was getting worse and worse. The transfer went very well, and all my files are fine.

I put TimeMachine to include "Ardbeg" in its future backups.

The problem is that TimeMachine still thinks that I have "Lagavulin", even if I is no longer the branch. When I access TimeMachine and look what is recorded in it, it always includes the files on "Lagavulin" in its most recent backups. Thus, each current backup has "MacintoshHD" (system files), "Ardbeg" (personal records) and "Lagavulin" (old version of the personal folders).

How can I know TimeMachine that I own is no longer "Lagavulin"?

  • Time Machine NAS RAID

Goal: large, reliable Time Machine back-up.

(No purpose: archiving.) I do that separately on optical carriers per year, double copies, which goes off site. I understand that optical media can degenerate over time - even if some are marketed as "of archive-quality" - and therefore based on a cloud of archiving is the way to go but for now he takes too much bandwidth and I'm worried about security. I recently got a burner external blu - ray: exceptional.)

Question: can I use RAID for Time Machine if I connect by USB directly on my computer?

Issue 1: reliability external drive. This has happened twice that I bought a property, brand, large external hard drive and was prematurely fail at a difficult time. My local computer guru said "it happens" and is "unpredictable" and just buy a new one, most won't. Or, for better quality, get a NAS - network attached storage that can be attached, they have the temperature control, mine is a RAID 2 discs, so there is that the degree of redundancy - but not, I learn, protect against a corrupt Time Machine backup and that can happen, or power increases (although it is on a high-tech power bar) , or theft, etc.

Problem 2: using NAS, which I connected to a Terminal Airport Express via an Ethernet cable - if connected to the computer by WiFi - the Time Machine backup becomes a "sparsebundle" (set of files, in fact), encrypted file with password (?) drive access. However, this was work and I did a full restore of your data (no 'system') the other day with Migration Wizard when I got a new hard drive installed in my old iMac (also upgraded at the time of 10.9 to 10.11). It took over all night, but the wonder of wonders, it chugged along and finished and seems fine. (I have not checked tens of thousands of files individually!)

(My SIN explicitly supports Time Machine, and I checked that box in the configuration of the SIN, and it seemed to work.) I didn't have to leave the mounted drive. Time Machine found hourly and used invisibly in the background.)

Problem 3: I have rename my hard drives for some reason any and do not remember quite what its name was. I wonder if this is part of my problem (read more). But there is a method in Time Machine to 'Browse other discs of backup. " I was looking for a file that I kept outside my usual login "user" and so had not been returned when I used Migration Assistant for data recovery only.

However, when I do this, then nothing is there. I've learned that sometimes, with an encrypted sparsebundle, wireless backup, you will have to let Time Machine sit for a few minutes before the back-ups start to appear, but now, with my new hard drive (with a new name) and the new version of the OS, there is simply nothing; just 'today' that shows only my current hard drive status. Obviously, there was something, or Migration Assistant wouldn't have worked, but during the inspection of the backup via Time Machine, the file seems to be here (whatever_my_computer - name_was.sparsebundle), but it is empty.

If I just try to navigate in the Finder to the sparsebundle NAS Time Machine, I can find it but not to open it. Double click: nothing happens. It is not that I forgot to connection settings, this is what it do not ask me for them.

This happened to me twice and the first time was the day after archiving (luck and good planning) and I thought that it is a kind suddenly lucky, but now it happened again.

So, I tried a bit of searching and not found a clear answer to my question above. I do not see these links:

    TEM http://www.petemarovichimages.com/2013/11/24/Never-use-a-RAID-As-Your-Backup-sys.

    https://support.Apple.com/en-CA/HT201250

    https://discussions.Apple.com/thread/3837784?start=0 & tstart = 0

    https://discussions.Apple.com/thread/7448896?start=0 & tstart = 0

    https://discussions.Apple.com/thread/5849068?TSTART=0

Of them, it seems that a NAS that has an explicit ability to Time Machine might work (mine did), but is not fully functional, not approved by Apple and is completely unpredictable. My limits are described above. (I work around them).

However, moving forward: I have this RAID 2 discs sitting around, seemingly more reliable than a drive external non-temperature controlled, and I wonder about the connection by USB directly on my computer. What is the downside of this? That is my question. Who will 'normally' work as a Time Machine backup external drive?

Another option is to get two large external hard drives and the value of Time Machine to switch between the two. I have not tried, but apparently it was possible for the last iterations little Mac OS X.

I have important data that requires careful management.

    Thank you all,

    Charles

I use a direct attached Drobo (it is a very easy to use RAID device).

I've always had problems with Time Machine on the network, so I stopped using it in this way. I've never had problems with the TimeMachine and direct-attached storage.

With the Drobo if a disk goes bad, I buy a replacement and hot it swap for the failed drive.

  • Time Machine of immutable/incorrect information?

I have a client using 10.11.6 on an iMac with a problem with Time Machine not allowing (at least not not appearing to allow) any changes on the disk used for backup and also showing a date in 2015 on the menu bar which the last backup was performed successfully.  Despite all this the TM backups are up-to-date and occurring normally checked by looking at the TM backup drive that I chose (but which does not appear as the backup selected in parameters of TM drive).

I tried to delete the file plist TM but don't know where to go next... of ideas?

    Hello MacAttac,

If I understand you right, you have problems with Time Machine backup on your iMac to clients running 10.11.6. Although it seems to be back up successfully by looking at the drive itself, Time Machine in the menu bar that shows the last backup was actually in 2015, and Time Machine in system preferences shows a different drive than the one that it is backup.  I know the importance of keeping a computer backed up regularly, so I can understand the concern that it would cause if you see incorrect dates for backups of this machines.

Because this isn't the good drive backup, try following the steps outlined in this support article: If you can not back up or restore your Mac using Time Machine if after you follow these steps, you do not come to a resolution, reply back to us whether these two disks that were used Time Machine on this computer are the same brand and model.

Thank you for using communities of Apple Support.

    Take care!

  • Time Machine-not enough space error

    Hi all

I had to unplug my computer and move it to another room and now after all hang up, I get this message "not enough space for full backup". There are about 150 GB to 2 TB disk space as it is filled with iTunes and Time machine backups.

I guess it's because ever since I hooked everything back up Time Machine think it is made the first backup of everything rather than pick up where he left off when he made the last backup?

Please tell me that I shouldn't let it save it for the first time again. It took an eternity to accomplish this last time as the computer kept going to sleep.

  • Folder by default, Time Machine

I had this problem in Mavericks and now it also occurs in ElCapitan:

I am in the Finder and want to enter Time Machine. The Finder currently on the top window can be anywhere on any of my internal or external drives.

I will go into the Time Machine and the window comes down to my home folder. I then went back to the window, that I intend to display.

This behavior was not there before the Mavericks, and I realized that it was a matter of Mavericks. Why then done in El Capitan? Is there some prefs to remove file or a way to solve this problem, while Time Machine opens the window that I am consulting?

You can try to delete the .plist, but it may not work.

Delete the /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist file (in your library folder level, not the library folder inside your home folder, where are most user preferences).

  • Backups Time Machine very slow on 2015 MacBook Air

Associated with a topic of discussion between a few days ago (two MacBooks, 10.11.4, a fast Time Machine backup and a very slow), I start a new topic with new information that seem to show it is a problem more general and not related to Time Machine networks.

    Here's the situation:

    • A 2015 MacBook Air, 10.11.4, 8 GB / 512 GB, has extremely slow performance of backup Time Machine, taking 40 hours for the first 300 GB backup and incremental backups for a long time as well
    • TM performance is essentially the same whether on the network (wired Ethernet) or a USB3 external disk
    • When you back up to disk USB3, I confirmed that the information system shows that the port is configured as USB3, not USB2 (nothing else is plugged into the USB port)
    • Tests of bandwidth I/O gross (using dd and iperf) show no problem; the network reached 110 MB/s bandwidth, written network managed at 50 Mbps, external USB3 HD written work at 40-50 MB/s (write hard drive speed limit)
    • 3 other Macs of various ages from 2009-2014 on the same network have no problem at all do backups Time Machine Network; a backup complete first on a 2011 MacBook Pro 500 GB takes 5 hours or more than 10 x faster than the MBA problem
    • Time machine network uses a Linux server running the latest Debian and Netatalk 3.1.8 and the connection is via a USB3/Gigabit adapter, no WiFi, and iperf tests with this arrangement shows 900 MB/s of throughput of the server.  In all cases, the Time Machine and external time Machine Network USB HD have the same symptoms.
    • The problem with MacBook Air is configured the same as the MacBook Pro 2011, which she replaced "daily driver", possible
    • This problem was shown by the MBA since his unboxing conversion, taking 20 hours for his first backup once Setup initially.  Incremental backups now take several hours, leading to interrupted incremental backups and, I believe, databases corrupted backup triggers new full backups that take today the 40 hours.

Using Terminal Server and iostat, Console, etc, I see that there is significant activity e/s for the backup drive on the order of 20 to 40 MB/s for long periods on the MBA during the TM backup, but during that time the average declared backup size as shown in the window in the console and TM is growing by only 5 GB/hour.  This occur even if the backup will the external drive or a network drive. This seems to mean that the I/O bandwidth to and from the disk hard external, only 1/600 contributes to the progress of the backup.  I am sure that there is overload of certain checks and other tasks, but not to a 600-to-1 ratio.

I tried to disable the limitation of the I/O of low priority as shown here: http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/212537/time-machine-ridiculously-slow-a close-el-capitan-upgrade, that helps a bit (maybe 20-30%), but not by a factor of 10 for others.

I have gone through a number of the Time Machine of Pondini troubleshooting steps, but he found nothing corresponding to these symptoms.

The only thing I can conclude is that Time Machine, the application or configuration, on this specific MBA, is down. (A single thought that I wrote this to the top that I have not tried: the MBA and the time MBP running VMware Fusion and have a file of 50 + GB VM; on the MBA that is not excluded from TM backups while on the MBP is)

Does anyone have advice on what to watch next?  In all cases, only one key would be why it seems that only 0.16% of all the bandwidth I/O to the backup drive seems to be actual data backup.

Once again, three other Macs, all running the same 10.11.4, back to the Time Machine Server perfectly and have for years.  Only this new MBA glue as broken out, either to a network drive or an external hard drive USB3.

(A single thought that I wrote this to the top that I have not tried: the MBA and the time MBP running VMware Fusion and have a file of 50 + GB VM; on the MBA that is not excluded from TM backups while on the MBP is)

What happens when you exclude it as the MBP?
