Looks like the file associations have been corrupted, you may be able to repair the associations through these articles.
If you cannot run the .exe from these programs, take a look at these.
For Windows Vista file association problems

See what this article mentions on a registry key called "UserChoice", if you can adapt this information and apply as appropriate to solve your problem.

Cannot install Adobe Reader in OS 10.11.1
I could not install Adobe Reader from the upgrade to El Capitan. No problems with download, but it will not install. I went through all the advice offered by Adobe, without success. Anyone know how to get around this problem?
What happens when you try? Your guard is defined to allow installation? Are you sure that you are downloading from the official website of Adobe?

My computer will not install adobe reader. I can't read all the PDFs! I'm on windows vista. Can any one help with a solution to this?
Hello s thorpe.
Thanks for posting on the Microsoft Answers forum.
If you're still having problems with the installation of Adobe Reader, you can see the following article several solutions that could help. Click here to read the article. I can't guarantee the information since it is not a Microsoft Web site, so before you make any changes, make a system restore point, then you can return to the State even if you have a problem.
Creating a system manually restore point
Right-click on the computer icon in the desktop, then choose Properties
In the left pane, click System Protection
Alternatively, to directly access the System Protection tab, click Start and type SystemPropertiesProtection.exe.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Click the System Protection tab and then click on create.
In the System Protection dialog box, type a description, and then click on create
You can also post in the Adobe Reader forums for help if the advice above does not help.
Click here for a link to the Adobe thd discussion forums.I hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Marilyn

Error code 1317 when installing Adobe Reader
I get the following error message when I try to install adobe reader:
Error 1317.An error occurred while attempting to create the directory
C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Acrobat\9.0\Replicate
I've upgraded to windows 7 (64-bit) Vista. It was a free update that was included with my purchase of the laptop. Any ideas? I am so frusterated! I managed to install Quickbooks 2010, among other programs, but this stupid thing will not cooperate. Thank you!
Hello
Error 1317 is related to authorization. This is a Ko from Adobe it referring to XP, but basically, it's the same thing that you do as well on Windows 7. http://kb2.Adobe.com/CPS/332/332541.html
Hope this helps!

Make sure you download the installation files Adobe Reader first.
Close all programs including web browsers as Adobe Reader adds extensions for your favorite web browser.
You must also run the System File Checker utility and temporarily disable your anti-virus utility:
Click Start
Type: CMD, according to the results, right-click CMD
Click on "Run as Administrator"
At the command prompt, type: sfc/scannowThis will check for any breach of integrity
Restart your system
If the program persists, try to download the full Setup files:

If the problem persist, use an alternative PDF reader such as Foxit Reader:

Here is the complete list of all the "file Association" steps I've seen has proved useful before. There is no need to go beyond the stage that solved the problem but all the 'your computer' & Microsoft controls are very well to do anyway - they would not hurt even if he did not fault.

Plan to run the System File Checker

To see if it a Windows problem or an Adobe issue, see if this PDF Reader installed.Foxit Reader

Tried to install Adobe Reader on the Mac, "new version already installed.
I am trying to install Adobe Reader on my Mac. I uninstalled and reinstalled. I keep getting the message that the new version is already installed...
Hi Sarah Simac,
Seems that the reader is always present in your system. Its not completely uninstalled.
Try to directly remove the application from the Applications folder, which is just trash/Applications/Adobe Reader.app.
Also, this can cause a break in the features of Safari to read PDF files using Adobe Reader plugin. To resolve this problem, go into/Library/Internet Plug - Ins / and remove AdobePDFViewer.plugin and AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin
Also try to open this link in another browser: Adobe - Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Distribution

Hello
Could you please tell us what exactly happened made you reinstall the drive? We would give an idea of what went wrong which caused this problem.
So if you are on windows, you can download the cleanup tool to uninstall the reader completely. Sometimes some traces remain, and this is perhaps the reason why you are facing this problem.
