Problems installing PALM Desktop on XP

I recently bought a PALM TX to replace a Tungston T.  After a few minor problems, it installs successfully on my work laptop.  Then I tried to install it on my desktop (XP Home) home PC and have experienced significant problems.  Following the Start Here guide I plug my TX before I loaded the software, but the system gave me "unrecognized USB device" constantly.  I started the installation of office, but after a few screens (download far from over), he fails a reboot (I tried this twice).  I disconnected the TX and restarted the installation and it went in the right order.  Computer has expired when I arrived at the stage of 'Synchronization device', I connected the TX and the "unrecognized USB device" came again and when I hit the 'sync' button nothing happened.  In addition, I noticed that the Hot Sync icon installed in the right hand bottom of the screen as it was supposed to.

I uninstalled the software and tried to restart, reinstall, and even tried to install it from the downloads on the PALM page, including an option 'repair' installation problems.  Nothing works.  And of course it is there nothing on the PALM page: installation problems or even a way to the problem of PALM support by e-mail.

Is it possible to get this figured out?

Well, the OS is XP Home.  OK so here's the solution I guess... After trying various scenarios that did not work, I tried just not worth trying to get the new Palm Desktop to work with my TX.  So I unplugged the sync cable.  It is then that I noticed that I had plugged the new sync cable into the USB port to which my old cradle used.  This USB was one that came with my system that is about 4 or 5 years (I think it is called Technology USB 1).  However, I have also a new USB 2 card in my system so I decided to give that a try... and it worked.  The system immediately recognized the new TX and everything worked fine after that.  So I guess the lesson here is that the newest Palm requires the latest USB technology even if I've seen that in any of the documents.

And thanks to those who tried to help me with this problem.  It's really appreciated.

    All solutions?

The fixed.  My user profile has been slightly altered possibly by data that I restored my profile after reformatting.  The restored data likely contained some partial data from the previous Palm installation causing incompatibilities.

I found the source of the problem when I installed the program as another account with privileges administrator and installation that has happened without a hitch.  So I moved my docs on another drive and blew my profile in hell and recorded again.  When my profile has been recreated, I ran the Palm software installation and installed normally.

    Thanks for your help.

  • Problems with Palm Desktop

This isn't a matter of timing, but I write it here because it's the only instance that is specifically for Mac. I use Palm Desktop on the same computer (an old iMac, one that looks like a desk on a dome lamp) for years. All of a sudden will not open Palm Desktop. I tried to reinstall the application several times without success. I even deleted all the support files that I could find, although I can't be sure that I got them all because I was not able to find a list of what the Palm Desktop Setup installs, and there is no uninstall option. It comes to Palm Desktop 4.2.1 which should be the latest version because I downloaded again, since the problem occurred.

What should I do? Everyone knows about this problem before? And how to fix it?

OK, I got it fixed now. Thanks Alan!

When I try to install Palm Desktop 6.2 by running PalmDesktopWin62.exe everything seems to be okay until the 'configuration register.  Then I get a Microsoft Windows message that says: «...» "The wizard was interrupted before Palm desktop by access could be completely installed." ...".  Then the installation stops and installation is not the case.

If it's important I use Windows Vista Home Premium.  And until I tried installing, I: uninstalled my previous versions of Palm Desktop by using the uninstall feature from the CD installation disc, disabled my antivirus, stop Windows Defender and set the compatibility mode of PalmDesktopWin62.exe to the option "Windows XP (Service Pack 2).

Someone knows how to fix this?

Have you tried running just 'normally '?  Disable your AntiVirus software temporarily during installation?

At this point, you may need to do a "clean uninstall" and some changes of registry before trying again:

  • Palm Desktop 4.2: Palm Desktop 4.2 on Windows 32-bit 10

This isn't a question, some information for fanatical Palm users who might be interested.

Because I have some old software I want to continue to use, I installed the 32-bit version of Windows 10 on my HP Pavilion 1d21dx g6.

I used to synchronize my Palm Centro on a machine to Vista 32 bit running Palm Desktop 6.2. Because some very useful features (such as the birthday in the calendar reminders) disappeared in this version, after setting up 10 32-bit Windows, I decided to try to use Palm Desktop 4.2, the version supplied with my Centro. I am happy to report that I have installed the software, did a HotSync, and everything went very well [WELL, i thought THAT this was the CASE - SEE below]. Now I have all my stuff on the phone and on the machine Windows 10, complete with birthday in the calendar reminders.

The only problem that I had was settting place pipes HotSync for some Palm OS with counterparts of office applications, but in any case, I was able to get the pipes installed by the application of counterpart temporarily running in Windows XP compatibility mode. Once the pipes are put in place, it seem to not need to run anything in compatibility, or administrator mode [WRONG - SEE below].

I have not heard a lot about the 32-bit version of Windows 10, but I like it. I found that it is very fast, and I still have to find an old Windows application that she will not be executed.

I found a solution that worked for me. I realized that something on my setup of Palm caused my Palm user directory switch between C:\Program Files\Palm\Username and C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Palm\Username, leading to duplicate reports, missing documents and the General problems of HotSync. I do not know what exactly triggers the switch every time (I don't think it was just the question of admin rights as I at first suspected), but I think it had to do with some of my Palm to be older than other applications. In other words, some were apparently designed or implemented to date with new versions of Windows in mind, while others were not, and HotSync Manager could not deal with that, because I had everything installed.

In any case, everything started to work properly after I installed Palm Desktop 4.2 directly in the folder C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Palm\

(Of course, in all the above examples, substitute your own "Username" username.)

My thought was to avoid the switch between the location of the traditional repertoire of the Palm and the location of the user directory style Vista by installing Palm software directory in the Vista style directory. I have not experienced any important matter. The only minor issue I have is that HotSync Manager does not automatically start despite being listed in the Startup tab in the Manager of tasks. I'm not going to tinker with compatibility modes and privileges trying to HotSync Manager starts when the computer starts. It is easy enough to just run it whenever I have to synchronize.

You will also need to consider the order in which you install your office-side applications. For example, I found that one of my apps should be executed only once with admin rights so that he could establish his lines. Which seems to trigger a change in the location of the user directory for another application that I use - that does not allow the user to specify an installation directory. I got around this by implementing these apps in the order that I mentioned, while the other user directory would not be changed after creating the first led her.

Of course, my solution has its limits, but it works for my single-user installation.

  • Palm Desktop 6.2.2: Palm Desktop 6.2.2 with Windows 10

What is someone having the same problem:

I installed Palm Desktop 6.2.2 on my Windows 10 system, sync'd and everything worked fine for about 30 days approximately.  The other day I started my computer, went to Palm Desktop and found all the files (in the left panel) disappeared EXCEPT media and install it.   I uninstalled and reinstalled several times (from sources stored and newly downloaded) and still have the same problem.

Since the installation of Windows 10 I found Microsoft seeks to establish, it's default applications with a few applications (a real fight with MS / Chrome and MS / Adobe PDF).

At that time, the folder that I can sync's Photo.   All other folders appear sync, but do not appear in the left vertical navigation bar.

After installing Palm Desktop 6.2.2 version 4.1.4 on my laptop to Windows 8 for use with my Palm Tungsten E2, I now only 4 modules... Fees, Note Pad, media and install. Where have calendar, addresses, etc., disappear to?

Version 7.0.2 HotSync Manager also offers, USB, network and series, but NOT the Bluetooth in connection settings. I use an IVT BlueSoleil Bluetooth adapter and their driver/software version 8.0.395.0, which works very well with anything else.

GoneFishin6, I suggest you clean uninstall/reinstall Palm Desktop.

Your question is the first I've heard of.  Others report success with Win8.

These instructions are for Vista, but should work for Win8.

You first need to you a copy of your data to have just in case something happens. You can find your data files by clicking on start-> Documents-> Palm OS Desktop. Highlight your Palm Desktop user name and right click and copy. Then go to the desktop of your PC, click on a blank spot block and select.

If this is the first time, you install Palm desktop and encounter a problem, go to the previous step. If you are not concerned about your data at this stage, go to the next step.

Now, you want to uninstall Palm Desktop and remove anything that has to do with Palm Desktop on your computer. Go to the following locations on the PC and delete the folders listed below. [C:\Program Files\Palm or C:\Users\[Vista Palm connection name] \appdata\local\virtualstore\Program Files\Palm or PalmOne C:\Users\[Vista Login Name] \appdata * note you may need to show hidden folders to join appdata. To do than to go into your control panel and open folder options. Go to tab and uncheck hide hidden files.

When you use Palm desktop 6.2, look in my documents or documents and delete the folder Office of PalmOS. It is the location of the PD 6.2 data files.

Once this is done, you will need to remove certain keys in the registry of your PC operating system.

Word of warning, go here and removing the wrong thing can cause your PC to start, crashing and deletion of programs and data. If you feel that you are not sure of yourself, see if you have a friend who can help you or a PC technician that you can pay to help you. This procedure will show them everything they need to remove. To make sure that we have a good copy of the current registry, we make a backup of the registry.

Go to start on your PC in the search box type "regedit.exe" without the quotes.

Point peak COMPUTER, go to file-> Export. Should appear with a save as box. Current place of residence is fine, must be within My Documents, or save to a location that you will remember. In the name of the file in low type "backup [todaysdate]" i.e. backup07072008. Then, the most difficult part.

The best way to ensure that your work with the right key, select the key that is installation quick palm and press delete on your keyboard. You will be asked, you of course. Say Yes. Do the same for all the keys below.

If you make a mistake, stop what you are doing. And call a PC technician. BUT do not turn off your computer.

The reg keys are as follows (Note: some of the theses reg keys will not be here, but if they remove them)

    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Palm Quick Install * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\PalmOne File Transfer * Robotics\Pilot Desktop HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Palm * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Palm, Inc. * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PalmDesktopAutorun * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\palmOne * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PalmSource * HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\PalmSource or anything else that says palm

    Then, restart your computer.

Then, reinstall your Palm desktop from the CD and do a hotsync. If request you a user name, enter the name that is on your device in the upper right of the screen to hotsync.

The installation directory is strange - I agree that could be the source of the problem.

On the laptop ready Win8.1, I have the HP (for my participation in the Forums), the directory is:

  • Data transfer Assistant - doesn't recognize palm desktop

I have a Palm Tungsten e I installed Palm Desktop v6.2 so I could transfer my data on my new Pre phone.  My Pre phone is plugged into the USB port on my computer and I selected the USB key on the phone. I then started the data transfer Assistant, has chosen to run, chose following the Welcome screen, chose following to the login window since I already have my phone connected pre, says next message window ' although Palm Desktop is installed, there is no data to transfer.

This is incorrect. my Palm Desktop contains data.  Why the data transfer Assistant say that?  The only option is left.  How do I get past this so I can transfer my data?

I did setup a Google mail account and put that on my phone but it seems not to matter.

    Any help would be appreciated.

I found the solution to my problem with the DTA does not transfer my data from Palm to my Pre phone.  Here are the steps I took:

    (1) backed up the data of palm on my external hard drive

    (2) uninstalling palm desktop and palm versalmail by using Add/Remove programs

    (3) record deleted program files/palm

    (4) pc reloaded

    (5) installed Palm Desktop V6.2

    (6) synchronize Tungsten E PDA to pc

    (7) made 3 new Palm Desktop: 1 user profiles for the calendar, 1 book, 1 for memos address (got this tip from another validation)

    (8) exported calendar data in the profile calendar, address to the address profile data and data Memo memo profile

    (8) DTA started

    (9) selected a profile suitable to transfer to pre - done 3 times.  Wanted to make sure that each type of data transferred correctly and it also gave me the opportunity to choose where I wanted to save the data

    (10) SUCCESS!

Hope this helps someone else out there.

  • items lost during upgrade to Palm Desktop 6.2.2

    Hello

Just bought a Palm Pre, unlocked, a beauty.  Wanted to move the items from my Palm Desktop to the FRONT.  During the upgrade from my old, old Desktop 4.0.4 for Desktop 6.2.2 I lost all contacts, calendar etc events.  The datebook.dat file is there, but since my old Palm Treo broke down entirely (Palm could not repair it) I could not synchronize the installation of the new software.

The question is: How can I move my items the address.dat, dateboook.dat etc. for the new version of office.

Thanks muchly for all the good advice!

    Janko

You cannot use these data files to the point 6.2.

6.2 has a format of different file than previous versions and don't recognize these files.

What I would say, it is to copy your username folder in c-program files-Palm.

Paste this folder on the Windows desktop. With the help of delete Palm desktop 6.2 Control Panel-Add/Remove programs. Re-install Palm desktop that you had previously installed. Pick up the user name folder in the folder on the drive c. open palm desktop palm and see if your data is there.

If this is the case, export your data from backup. Here is a procedure for this.

The best way to protect your data is to export the data in each category of Palm Desktop in a separate folder on your PC.

Create a new folder on your PC somewhere that suits. Name it something like Palm Desktop data. Click on the link below and follow the instructions on this page for the export procedure.

    http://www.Palm.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?id=28734

Make sure you only select everything for the beach in the export window.

With the data stored in the created folder, make a copy of this file and save it on a USB key, cd - rw or external hard drive.

Whenever you change in Palm Desktop, export the data that has been changed in this file and save again to external media.

With this process you can always import the data in Palm Desktop, whenever you have a problem with the data in Palm Desktop, or if your computer/hard drive/device crash.

After you have your data backed up, install Palm desktop 6.2 and if data do not migrate to 6.2, use the import function in Palm desktop.

For reference purposes, click the following link to the support page for your device on the kb.palm.com Web page.

  • Vista and palm Desktop

I had my Tungsten E2 for several months. BONES of my old computers is XP.  Palm Desktop was working fine. No problems.  I recently got a new computer which of ' OS is Vista. When I got the new computer, I downloaded the 6.2 Palm Desktop version.  Had no problems with the process of HotCync, all the data was there and correct. My new computer is 32 - bit, not 64-bit that is causing so many problems.  I must also stress that I do not use my PDA as you would in the company.  This is my Notepad, my contacts, calendar, etc.  I buy Splash Wallet - I've used since I got my T - E2. I can't connect to the internet, WI - FI or anything like that.  As I said, this is my electronic "Notepad." I do not use Outlook, I use the Contact, calendar module, etc. which are delivered in Palm Desktop. Yesterday, I decided to HotCync to my computer to back up the info on my PDA.  When I open Palm Desktop, only modules there were: media and Splash Wallet modules. My contacts, calendar, tasks, Notepad, etc were not there. I did a repair on the desk of the downloaded installation program, but they were not there yet. On my PDA, he said they were all supported up to, but where? When opening Palm Desktop would give me an info box that says I had to lower the load on the web: WMP/Direct X and Apple Quick Time.  Why do I need now and why not before? They were included in the Palm Desktop draft.exe? My PDA works fine and all the info is there and correct.

Does anyone else have this problem?  The only thing I can think to do now is to re - install Palm Desktop.  Once the repair ran through the download of the installation, Splash Wallet components were not in the Palm Dektop as before.  I can't really understand what is happening.  I guess it has something to do with Vista, but I don't know what, why, or what to do to fix!  HELP, PLEASE!

I will answer your questions in RED.

I tried to follow your instructions.  The first problem I encountered was in remove C:\Program Files\Palm.  There are about 20 files and 1 folder that I can't get deleted - PhotoDesktop corresponds to the folder and the files start with AlarmApp_PSI and down to UserData.dll.  I've tried everything, and I am the administrator on my computer. But that does not make a difference to the computer. You must remove the entire Palm folder only. You go to programs and features in the control panel and try to uninstall Palm desktop here? If the files delete, then go to the next step, I hope that these files will not affect install it or be replaced.

I was able to get the C:\Users\[Vista username] deleted \appdata\local\virtualstore\Program Files\Palm. This C:\Users\[Vista Login Name folder] \appdata has a lot of other things in it - other than the stuff of Palm.  Stuff like Adobe, Google, Microsoft, etc.  Should I really delete this sort of thing? No, you should only remove the Palm folder.

I haven't started on the registry deletions yet.  I thought I should get some tips on things above first.  I copied all the data and "stored" on my desktop.  I don't know what to do about the above.   I don't have an installation CD. I had to download Palm Desktop on the site.  Is that going to make a difference?  No, make sure that the version you download is for your device on Vista. You already said that you have downloaded Palm Desktop 6.2, that should be ok.

Advice, please.  Thanks for the help so far.

I click New, Type Hillshum, and hit enter and gives me the illegal username of the error or unable to open the directory. Also, I'm doing this as it's the only profile running.

    Help appreciated,

    Hillshum

Welcome to the forms of Palm,

Palm Desktop should work as the Admin changes it brings in the registry. It is most likely your problem with that. If you have questions post back.
