When I try to install SP2 I get the message that I need to install SP1 first. Yet that said SP1 is shown as not being unhooked. Running Fix - it, but nothing does not change. My OS is Vista home premium and I HAV e recently re - install the operating system.

Thanks for posting in the Microsoft Community Forum, please be assured that we would do our best to help you.
I'm sorry to hear that you are not able to install the SP1 and SP2 on the computer.
Try these steps and see if it helps.
Step 1:
Hide the SP1 update to the folder updates offered.
Consult the following link:
http://TechNet.Microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ff382716.aspx
Note: Also applies to Windows Vista.
Step 2:
Try to download the SP1 standalone package and install it.
http://www.Microsoft.com/en-US/Download/details.aspx?ID=30
Once SP1 is installed, try to download and install SP2 from the following link and check if that helps.

Service Packs and internet
Since doing a full restore on my computer xp laptop, I can't get on internet. As I try to connect, a message appears telling me to download the Service Pack 1 and 2. I copied these on a disk and tried to install it on XP but could not because I need internet to complete the task. Can anyone help?

How you get Service Pack 1 and 2 files that you copied to the drive?
You must install Service Pack 3, not Service Pack 2. If your current installation (after recovery) is the original Windows XP, you must install Service Pack 1 before you install Service Pack 3.
You can get the necessary files here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389 to this document, download sp1a on the link that says click here to download Windows XP Service Pack 1a (SP1a).
SP3 withdraws the section down under the heading "Download the latest Windows XP service pack from the Microsoft Download Center" - download the Windows XP Service Pack 3 package now
You don't need to be connected to Internet to install service packs. In fact, you'd be better to disconnect your computer from the Internet and completely disable your antivirus application before installing service packs.

OK to reset to factory settings to allow hopefully laptop to read CDs again, then downloaded installed sp1 and lost control of the keyboard and the mouse, and still can not play music not forget hadda restart in safe mode to use the system restore to just installing the sp1 b4
Hi MartyFenwick,
I imagine the inconvenience that you are experiencing. I will certainly help the question of fixing.
To help you suggest several steps to solve the problem, I would appreciate if you could answer the following questions:
1. What is the brand and model of the computer?
2. What is the brand and model of the mouse and keyboard?
3. you receive an error code or message?
4. is everything works well after running system restore?
5. what exactly do you mean by "hadda restart in safe mode to use the system restore to just installing the sp1 b4?
6. what happens when you try to play music CDs?
7. what program you use to play the CD?
Please follow the methods and mark the question below:
Before you install SP1, follow the method 1 and 2.
Method 1:
You need to perform a clean boot to prevent any third party conflicting application from interfering with your computer.
To put the computer in a clean boot state, you must follow the steps in the article mentioned below and check with the question.
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or Windows 7:
http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/929135Note: You must follow step 3 of the article mentioned above to recover your computer to a Normal startup after you complete all the steps.
Method 2:
I suggest you disable the antivirus for temporarily until the installation of SP 1.
Disable the antivirus software:
http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/disable-antivirus-softwareImportant note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you need to disable temporarily to install other software, you must reactivate as soon as you are finished. If you are connected to the Internet or a network, while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Space required for Vista SP1 and SP2?
Hello
I have an old Windows Vista Basic Home Edition machine, I bought in 2006. I have not installed upgrades to SP1 and SP2 again, but I want to get them now. Drive C, where Vista is installed, has only 3 GB of space left free. Could someone please guide me if I should proceed with the upgrade or have more space? How much space would take these updates?
Thanks in advance.

Hey HKansal
you really need to buy a bigger hard drive
Make sure you have enough disk space to install SP1 (even though much of that space will be recovered after the installation). If you need a free space on the disk, go to onlinestrategies to free disk space .

Install the SP1 and SP2 on a single computer?
I thought installing SP 2 on my Vista computer.
But I see that Microsoft tells me that SP 1 is a sine qua non for the SP 2.
When I go to page 1 SP from Microsoft it tells me that it is not necessary to install Service Pack 1 - just turn on Windows Update.
Windows Update is enabled on my computer.
So should I install Service Pack 1? SP 2?
... But I thought that SP 1 is not for individual computers?
Presumably to the Windows Vista Service Pack 1 five language standalone (434.5 MB!), which is not intended to be use on a single computer, but Windows Update will provide & install SP1. The download of that Windows Update uses is considerably smaller.
Now that SP1 is installed, the prerequisite updates SP2 (for KB955430 and KB947821) should be offered by the automatic updates very soon. [1] once the installed updates, automatic updates should offer SP2.
Yet once, SP2 must be installed by on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 for your computer receive additional updates (i.e., updates published after July 12, 2011).
