  I bought a couple of new ESX hosts and wanted to migrate virtual machines from the old hosts to the news.

  They share no storage, so the idea was to make unrequited vmotion. I've migrated a couple of virtual machines without any problem.

  So far so good, no problem and good performance (120 MB/S on a 1Gbit link), any necessary downtime for virtual computers customer etc.

  Then I hit a brick wall, a couple of virtual machines do not accept migrating online and fails with these errors:

  The strange thing here is that it's only a few virtual machines who know this problem. I know for a fact that some of them has been created and has started in the old cluster and some works while some don't. I was not able to limit at different levels of the operating system (two machines have the same operating system where a job and the other does not). Most VMs are Windows virtual machines.

  Naturally, I ran the CPUID ISO test that VMware has, and I got this result:

  Does anyone have any suggestions on how can I proceed to obtain the complete success of vmotions? Check the BIOS settings tips?

  What makes it really strange is that some VMS migrate correctly, while some simply refuse... I suspect that it may be some affecting .vmx deep inside the file, this is my next step to study. I need without restart or stop the VMs customers.

  Looks like you have either CVS mode on these virtual machines (at some point) or you have a custom CPUID mask set. Anyway, you will need a failure to change that.

  The other option would be to set the CVS mode on your new cluster at a lower level, but you need to stop all the virtual machines on the cluster. Lesson for next time do you it I suppose...

  I have two Intel servers (we're westmere generation and the other is generation sandy bridge). I'm trying to vmotion a test in my cluster vm and when I try to change the VCA mode I get "the host cannot be admitted to the current cluster Enhanced vMotion. compatibility mode.   so that the VM get the CPUID again, you will need to turn off the virtual machine and power then turn it on again.  Thus, you probably won't be able to do a vMotion from one host to another until the virtual machine has the new CPUID

• Having a problem with vmotion between two hosts with processors Intel E5640

  Hi all.

  We organize a group of 14 guests, each with ESX 4.0, build 261974 installed.

  They are managed through vCenter 4.0.0 and construction 258672, vSphere client 4.0.0 builf 258672.

  The hosts are blades from IBM, in a BladecenterH.

  Some of the blades are older model HS21 (type 7995) with processors Intel Xeon E5440.

  The rest of the blades are more recent model HS22V (type 7871) with processors Intel Xeon E5640.

  We are currently replacing old HS21 blades with more the HS22 blades, so we just bought 7 HS22s, all with the same Intel E5640 processors located in the blades currently in service. One of the things that this transition will happen for us is allowing us to have the same processor type in all of our blades and remove vMotion compatibility problems we had in the past. We were unable to turn on CVS, because we would have had to shut down a cluster of virtual machines on the latest hosts and could not take this kind of failure. We will turn VCA after that.

  Here's the question:

  We just installed the first new knives, and when turn on us and try to vMotion VMs to it, it fails. He gives us the error standard vMotion on CPU register incompatibilities, and that we should read kb1993. The thing is, they all have the same processor. Same identifier type, same everything, yet for some reason vCenter is convinced they are incompatible. We checked things in BIOS, and they are all the same.

  We are ideas, other than the new knives have a later rev BIOS than the old ones.

  I do not see these errors on the other server ESXi I use, and I am at a loss to explain this.

  The journalist script creates the file *.tgz for the server, and when I crack it open there are a TON of data in it (it's about 50 MB).  The only difference between this server and the one who gets no errors is an extra folder in the *.tgz called 'altbootbank', from what I can find until passing by the content.

  Is this something that would cause the bid invalid?

  Hi, is there a VM in the inventory of 192.168.254.1 with space in its name, for example, "mail server"? This can cause the reporter producing the output above, which does not affect the validity of the bid. There is a forthcoming patch for VMmark 2.5, which includes a fix to this bug. In the meantime, you can eliminate this output by renaming the virtual machine, so there is no space in the name (all VMmark VMs tiles should be missing spaces in any case).

• Problem with the start of VMware ESXi 5.0

  I just installed VMware ESXi 5.0 on a new Cisco UCS B200 series blade with two 300 GB hard drives configured in a RAID 1 mirror.  I went through and completed the installation of VMware ESXi 5.0 on this server.  When the installation is complete and the server restarted, he did not initiate the ESXi where I can change the IP address and VLAN.  Instead, I get this text string after the initial boot sequence that is shown in the attachment.  I have a guest who said Shell > do not know why I can not start correctly in ESXi 5.0.  Thank you!  Paul

  Hi Paul,.

  Looks like you boot to the EFI shell. What is the startup policy that you have configured on this server service profile? It should look like the one below.  If there is a problem with the boot order, you should be able to type "EXIT", then enter on the EFI shell to exit the prompt. If your startup is similar to the one below and you still experience this issue, try to downgrade and re - ack the blade.

  I had a Debian Wheezy on a HP ML310e server. This server should be used as an iSCSI - storage server.

  Unfortunately I am not able to connect my 5.0 with LIO iSCSI target ESX servers.

  I used the implementation of LIO (targetcli) for iSCSI and I used the official installation manual Linux target SCSI - ISCSI.

  I recently had to solve some problems with delays during renumerisations and restarts due to RDM which is attached to a host ESXi 5 discs. Since I had a large number of RDM disks and needed to run the commands on each host I thought that I would write a script.   I put the files on a data store and gave them execute permissions and they seem to work, however when I run the scripts, they give an error at the end of running something on command not found or something. It does not run all the commands as well. Finally, when the perennial_verify.sh is run more than once something happens in the file storage_list.txt - he had me puzzed for awhile - he showed that the file was different from zero in size, but when I did a cat or less that he would say that the file is not found. Finally I tried to copy the file down in the browser of data store and found that there was a printable character appended to the end - possibly a return carraiage. Now I can not rename the file or delete it - it is impossible to remove. If anyone has any advice on running sh scripts and the correct way to pipe the output to a file I know you more.

  This usually happens for two reasons.  The first reason is that your BIOS is unable to properly read a GPT partition.  The second would be if your BIOS is starting from the wrong drive.  Check your BIOS and make sure the drive that you installed ESX is one that is configured to start.
