ProLiant DL380 G6 memory configurations

Our servers ESX host of base HP Proliant DL380 G5s in recent years (2-Quad Core procs with 32 GB of memory).

We intend to jump to the G6s DL380 (2 Quad Cores and 64 GB of memory) and I always rolled my head around configurations of memory. Looks like I could go with 8-8 GB or 16-4 GB Dual RDIMMS. For our company, I don't see us willing to go more than 64 GB for a host for the free slots aren't a concern.

The choice seems obvious because of differences in cost between the two. I guess this leaves of performance.

  1. What is the difference real performance one would expect between these two configurations?

  2. This change when we jump from ESX 3.5 to VSphere?

  3. Are there other aspects that I'm on.

With the virtualization environment, more memory of course provide best performance and host virtual machines more than you have known, the only thing that would be if you must attach these 2 types of hosts G5 & G6 in a cluster, you will be not able to VMotion and you should activate CVS to work otherwise use CPU masking in the parameters of the advance on CPUID NX indicator that could do otherwise use VMware CPU Compatility tool to check that well.

Many of my clients are satisfied with DL360 G6s and also running 64 GB of RAM but it using DIMMs 8x8GB.  I would use whatever it is cheaper for your cost as long as it has the same requirements of 64 GB of memory.  Unless you have plans for the future expansion of 128 GB, then using 16 x 4 DIMMS would be a long-term strategy.

  • Expansion / Upgrade ProLiant DL380 G5 and ProLiant DL360 G5

Hi all, we have two servers, Proliant DL380 G5 with SmartArray 400 and Proliant DL360 G5 with SmartArray 200icontroller controller, expand us on the disks, memory and cards network, the problem is that after we see the documentation which is sometimes wrong and don't know not the limitations of each of the parties, the issues are:

    Proliant DL380 G5 SmartArray 400:
    - STORAGE: up to 8 SAS / SATA, not clear what size that can be used with this controller, we understand that up to 500 GB SATA 7200 RPM and maximum 2 TB SAS 7200 RPM, we currently use with 146 GB drives to 10,000 rpm, whose original documentation is the maximum allowed value.
-MEMORY: Up to 64 GB modules of maximum memory up to 8 GB.
    - NETWORK: update with PCI Express, support cards that I can find are HP NC110T PCI Express and PCI-Express HP NC373 HP NC360T PCI-Express.

    Proliant DL360 G5 SmartArray 200i:

    - STORAGE: up to 4 SAS / SATA controller supports only 200i SmartArray four drives in RAID 0, 1, 1 + 0 if we wanted to expand to six bays that are available on the disk server, it would change the controller and memory. Yet, the size of disk maximum supported based on the documentation is 72 GB SAS and SATA drive 60 GB, but looking it seems as if you agree at least 300 Gb SAS disks at 10 000 rpm and up to 500 GB 7200 RPM.
    - MEMORY: up to 64 GB maximum memory modules up to 8 GB.
    - NETWORK: update with PCI Express, support cards that I can find are HP NC110T PCI Express and PCI-Express HP NC373 HP NC360T PCI-Express.

This is what I have gathered and what interests me in the expansion and to say that the documentation I found to give the feeling of this conflict, is perhaps by the dates of their procedures, but before you make a payment would guarantee the purchase. Also getting information guides, manuals and forums, I have also consulted compatibiliy HP Proliant Server Guide, so I have consutlado with HP before purchasing, but have yet to receive an answer.

A greeting and thank you very much

  • Smart Array P440ar: ProLiant DL380 g9 & controller Smart Array boot order

Work on a server of gen9 ProLiant DL380 (SFF) with an of P440ar (version 3.00) at location 0 (embedded RAID) and a controller (version 2.52) P840 to location 1. I have the P440ar connected to the risers on the front of the system, and I'm starting off the P840 6.5 RHEL. If no hard drive is attached to the P440ar, it works, but if all the disks are connected to the P440ar, the boot device is not found. I tried to change the order of boot in RSBU controller, but the P440ar was the ONLY listed controller. I didn't even have an option to change the P840.

Am I allowed to configure the system in this way?

After fighting with it for several days, I deleted the system P840 and started with just the P440ar. Then I added the P840 in the system and restarting, the system automatically added the P840 to startup controller command list. Works fine now.

  • HP Proliant DL380 G4 Red Hat 5.1 Linux P2V

    Hello

    I'm trying to P2V a HP Proliant DL380 G4 with Linux Red Hat 5.1.

I did a basic cold migration and found that I was getting panic the kernel. Looking through the mistakes, that's because migration cold does not provide the correct drivers etc. to the controller raid etc..

What I want to know is:

What is support/how to P2V a Linux OS with RAID etc configurations?

    Is there documentation?

Personally Im lazy and I'd like to see for a moment, and then click software if possible.

I P2Ved a bunch of them - but to be honest, we had problems in the start menu and ended up using Platespin Migrate (PowerConvert)

We talked to one of our COMPUTER resellers and they gave you a free for a migration or two - licesnse if at least we were able to test the product.

Looking to buy, but the memory configuration is confusing.

    Card mother 1024Mo is mounted?

    Hello

According to the Toshiba product page (you can find it using google ;)), the laptop was equipped with 2 bars of memory; a 2 GB and the second 1 GB module.
If the laptop has 2 modules installed and supports the 3 GB of RAM (2 GB + 1 GB)

I think that now everything is much clearer ;)

I read on a forum that it could be a driver of KVM switch problem?

I also read that you can press ESC after publication and which will bypass this, problem, the server is a domain controller and nobody is there.

  • R715 not Optimal Memory Configuration

    Hello

We have a bunch (35 ish) R715s all configured exactly the same. Each with two CPUs of AMD and the factory had modules memory 8 x 2 GB (1Rx8 PC3L-10600E-09-10-D0) inside.

Recently, I wanted to test the addition of extra ram. So, I bought 8 x 4 GB ram (2Rx4 PC3-10600R-9-10-E1). It is based on manuals Dells and determinative webpage about what would accept this server. When you try to install the ram here are the scenarios and what happens:

    (1) add 8 new modules for the empty slots of 'Black '. The machine does not start just buzzing.

    (2) take the 8 old modules out of the 'White' slots and REPLACE them with 8 new modules. It starts, but says "WARNING: the installed memory configuration is not optimal.  However, the bios reads 32 GB of ram.

    (3) take it down to only 4 modules (new modules). Set as described in 'A1, B1, A2, B2' slot machines. Same message "not optimal" appears and reads the 16 GB of ram.

I also made sure that I am under the latest firmware available. Can you please explain what I'm doing wrong and my best option for ram I have?

    Linxxs,

Sorry you are having memory problems with the server. The first question that you see, which once try to mix modules DIMM, is that new modules DIMM was purchased are Rdimms. The original DIMM, you have on the server are UDIMM, which Rdimms and UDIMM cannot be mixed in the same system. That's why you see the post No..

Now, when you install only the 4 GB Rdimms, the reason for the error "Not optimal" is that with the R715 with dual rank Rdimms, best would be 1333 mhz DIMM, where the rdimms 4 GB you ordered are at 1066 mhz. Now, these bars will work in the server, but is not optimal, where the error.

Just a note side when examining options, with unique access, you are limited to only 2 GB DIMMS, in order to extend it to allow only allows you to add several DIMMs of 2 GB. With double access, you can run as is, but will be the error, or you can swap in DIMM 1333 mhz modules.

Just a few things to consider.

Let me know if it helps.

  • C240 M3 blocked "memory configuration and test..."

    Hello

This server was returned by just us to Cisco, which had lent because it was new.   We try to return to service, but have encountered the following problem.

At first startup, the server receives as much as 'memory configuration and test..' message.  Just this message, it shows no progress in actually memory test.   After a few seconds it turns off, and then turns upward again, repeat that a few times before sit down you with the "memory configuration and test.." message at the top of the screen, but now also showing the address IP of MMIC inside.   The four led above the power button shows green fixed and switch ID unit than the blue LED power buttons, as they should.

I can get to the MMIC login screen, but the password to the default password so can't get farther in this direction until we discover the new username/password details.  Unless anyone knows how to reset the default MMIC.

I tried the following recovery steps...

    (1) if we set the J2065 ' Clear CMOS' jumper, the server doesn't work.  It powers up to the day before, but does not respond when you press the power button.

    (2) to the "recovery" of the J2068 rider don't seem to have any effect, the server does not read the USB key recovery file.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you

    Tony S

I remove the CMOS battery for a while, put back in place, try again and if still nothing... I would look for a motherboard replacement.

  • PE R710 optimal memory configuration

Hi, we need to upgrade memory on our R710s. trying to find recommendations for configuring optimal memory for gen 11 servers without losing the memory speed. Came across a doc 2009, saying that we can not go beyond 1 DIMM per channel to 2 RDIMMs x without dropping speed to 1066. I'm sure that, after the updates to the BIOS, than the limit went from 1 to 2 DIMMs per channel. Can anyone confirm or share a most recent doc? Thanks in advance.

    Hello.

The speed of the memory of each channel depends on the memory configuration. Yes, with the BIOS update as of May 15, 2009; Memory only rank and dual-rank modules supports up to 1333 MHz speed. See General information below.

    • Modules memory single or double-row:

      • One module of memory per channel supports up to 1333 MHz.
      • Two modules of memory per channel supports up to 1066 MHz. (review of BIOS on May 15, 2009, support was added for two modules per channel at 1333 MHz speed.)
      • Three modules of memory through are limited to 800 MHz, regardless of the speed of add-on memory.
    • For modules of memory Quad-rows:
      • One module of memory per channel supports up to 1066 Mhz.
      • Two modules of memory through are limited to 800 MHz, regardless of the speed of add-on memory.

If the memory modules with different speeds are installed, they won't work at the speed of the modules slower memory.

  • Data store / latency issues with HP ProLiant DL380 G7 - controller HP Smart Array P410i after disk 2014.09.0 SPP / hpsa - 5.0.0.74 update

    Hello

We are currently investigating massive data store and the problems of latency of disk (mainly READING) on some of our HP ProLiant DL380 G7 with P410i (BBWC) controller.

It all started after our half of regularly updated cycle for ESXi 5.1 U2 to:

    ESXi510-201407001 (no problem)

    -hp - esxi5.0uX - bundle - 2.1.1 - 2 (no problem)

    -HP-HPUtil-esxi5.0-bundle-2.1-15 (no problem)

    -hpsa - 5.0.0.74 (pilot) & SPP2014.09.0 (-assigned problems)

It is not a permanent increase in the latency of reading, but rather meeting points that trigger alerts of Veeam. Store of data read latency increases about 5 MS to 100 ms as soon as this happens, but after a few seconds, everything is back to normal. These data warehouses special are RAID5 (but we have also seen some alerts on RAID1), having read and write cache enabled and the most affected machines are those with the LOWEST its use.

We have a few WinServer2012R2 RDP for a small number of sessions (less than 5) - there is no noticeable delay on work on these.

Maybe someone of you knows a similar behavior after you apply the updates of HP ProLiant servers. We don't have any idea on what to try next, a SPP restoration is not possible, maybe the pilot, but we find the correct predecessor, as the old drivers of 2014 HPSA leads the Group on the host computer.

    Best regards

    HZ

    Hello

most likely, you have already solved the problem... I did some research and was in contact with HP. It is a problem with the driver hpsa - 5.0.0.74. It occasionally crashes when used with P410i. In the papers, you can find "WARNING: LinScsi: SCSILinuxAbortCommands:1843: failure, pilot hpsa to vmhba0. HP knows talking and working on the new driver. As a workaround, you can use hpsa - 5.5.0.60 (at least it works well for us).

  • County of total memory configured in each cluster

    Hello

I'm pretty new still, Powershell and PowerCLI, but I'm learning.

I'm playing with, trying to extract data from my vCenter and its going well so far, with the help of this site and a lot of google'ing

But now im running into a bit of a problem, I want to count the total amount of memory configured in each cluster. And what I soleved with this code:

    $confimem = get-Cluster |

    Select Name,

    @{N = 'Total configured memory GB'; E = {}

    [Math]: round (($_ |)) Get - VM | %{$_. MemoryMB} |

    Measure-object-sum | (Select sum - ExpandProperty) / 1 Ko, 1).

    }}

And it gives a good result. But now I'm thinking it's account also all VM in the cluster, which is fed to the wide models and all that. I want to do is to include only the VM that is powered.

And I was thinking something like: Where-Object {$_.} PowerState - eq 'Receiving'}, but I'm not experienced enough to know how to put this together.

Any body help me solve this problem? I would be very happy

    Nice day.

    $confimem = get-Cluster | Select Name, @{N = 'Total configured memory GB'; E = {[Math]: round (($_ |))} Get - VM | Where-Object {$_.} PowerState - eq "Receptor"} | %{$_. MemoryMB} | Measure-object-sum | {{(Select-ExpandProperty Sum)/1 Ko, 1)}}
