Providing Encrypted virtual disks instead of tenant multiple

I need to provide that each client encrypted virtual disks in a virtual environment.  I don't want to spend a whole data store on each client requiring encryption.

Is this possible?

Hello

Yes it is possible, but using encryption as a guest. Tools that help with this would be HyTrust DataControl and CloudLink SecureVM/navigation.

In addition, if you do not use a store of data encryption, choose one that allows you to have different keys by VM. In this way, you can have key tenant unique regardless of where the data is stored.

  • No matter what advantage of having a virtual disk instead of partition for SQL server?

    have a quick question...

I intend to deploy a new server in SQL on VMWARE 5.1 with super 3PAR storage (I'm not Administrator VMWARE, just an occasional driver).

I'm going to d, e, f for DATA, the newspapers partitions, backup. Does make sense to create a disc of rtual for each partition instead of create 3 partitions on a disk of VMWare return Outlook - 3PAR?

    Thank you.

I would recommend you create three virtual disks, because in this way you can easily put each virtual disk in a different level.

Using a single virtual drive for all three partitions, you can't give different level for each partition... in any case if your storage supports a hierarchy at the block level, storage moves the hot blocks of vmdk to a better level.

  • Dell virtual disk are larger. You want to increase the size of the data store.

    Hello

I started the implementation of a server ESXi 5.5 Update 1 this week. I didn't know Dell shipped the server with two virtual disks instead of one. I realized this _apres_ that I had already created the data store and setup a few virtual machines to the breast. I called Dell who sent specific instructions to increase the removal of the second (empty) virtual disk and add it to the main. In the end, I increased the single VD from 2 TB to 3 TB and I want to give the remaining space in my store of data.

I tried to follow the article here that explains how to do this via the CLI.

Well, he did not altogether. Fortunately, I was able to recover my datastore my setting start and end sectors to their original numbers. But I'm still left with this almost 1 TB of space that I can not attribute to the data store. After that I reread storage adapters in the client, the new Dell disk size resulted under measurement devices. Click on "increase...". ", generates the following error which led me on the way to the CLI method:

Call "HostDatastoreSystem.QueryAvailableDisksForVmfs" to object "ha-datastoresystem" on ESXi '[myservername]' failed.

I will paste my notes that I took everything by jobs. Things have exploded the rails when I put 4 partition size to the largest size. Any help, please?

I use that as a guide:

1 use start hardware device management tools to increase the capacity of additional disk to the device. For more information, commit your hardware provider.

This has been done. The new size of the virtual disk is 2791,88 GB (TB 2,79188)

6 identify the partitions that need to be resized and the size of the space to use.

We want to resize partition 4. I don't really understand the last part of this sentence, however. Read more.

7 the number of sector end you want for the target data store VMFS partitions. To use all out at the end of the disc space, remove 1 of the size of the disk in the areas as described in step 5 in order to get the last usable area.

ESXi 5.x has a command to do this:

    ~ # partedUtil getUsableSectors "/ vmfs/devices/disks/naa.6c81f660ef0d23001ad809071096d28a".

    1 5854986239

This means that we want 4 Partition of "naa.6c81f660ef0d23001ad809071096d28a" to be:

    13711360 - 5854986239 (i.e. the end of the disc)

8 resize the partition containing the target VMFS Datastore using the command partedUtil, specifying the original existing partition and the desired end sector:

Using the above information, our command is:

    resize # partedUtil ' / vmfs/devices/disks/naa.6c81f660ef0d23001ad809071096d28a ' 4 13711360 5854986239

    10. the tables of partitions have been adjusted, but the VMFS data within the partition store is always the same size. Now there is an empty space in the partition where the VMFS data store can be grown.

11 launch this v vmkfstools command to perform a refresh for VMFS volumes.

It did not work. I got an error:

    Update:

Since it was such a new machine, not in active production, we have safeguarded the VMs management off the ESXi host. Then flattened the virtual disk, recreated, and then created a store of data with the right size. (TPG this time, naturally.) We put the management of virtual machines on the data store. For Windows virtual machines, we have restored the using AppAssure. Everything is ok now.

Need to add a new item to the list of punch: check what Dell has done the configuration of the virtual disks. :-)

  • Reference Dell HDS - recommended VMware virtual disk - drives provided - basic and dynamic thin and thick.

Can someone point me to the literature on best practices for guest disc formats?

I know all the Compellent thin-provisions. However, in VMware 5.5, when you set up a virtual disk in the comments you have several choices:

    • Lazy provisioned to zero thickness
    • Eager provisioned to zero thickness
    • Provision of thin

And then, at the level of the OS, you have the choice of:

    • Base
    • Dynamics

I would like a pointer to the technical document explaining the advantages/disadvantages of each choice and recommended best practices.

    Kind regards

    Kath

I would like to either thin or thick lazy to zero.  The two will take the same amount of data on the HDS.  The main decision is where you want to manage your storage space?  If dilute you on thin you need to make sure that you make no provision in both places.  If you have thick lazy to zero, then you can only on commissioning on one side.

Say that I always thin on thin.  Recovery of the space at the level of the virtual computer is not officially supported immediately, but maybe someday.

In a virtualized environment, always keep it simple.  There is no dynamic performance with virtualization

    Hello MrRedPants,

Since you are using a configuration not redundant you will have problems trying to modify the paths between the controllers since the two hosts have only a single connection to the MD3000.  What you could do if possible is to get 2 more SAS cables & connect ports second on the MD to RAID opposite that the host is currently connected to.

Now, if this isn't an option so that you can make is to have 2 disk groups and assign the virtual disks / LUNS that are connected to each host in their own disk group.  If you go to each host their own groups of disks, then you will need to stop the e/s as you move the Ramdisk to the new group of disks so that you want to discard any data loss.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

  • Resize virtual disk

I have the virtual machine that occupies about 25 GB. I increased space 60 GB using VMware Vsphere client VM hard drive. I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed on the virtual machine. The virtual machine when I type 'fdisk-l' always displays the main partition set to 25 GB. and a scope and partition PTAS. I do not see the additional 35 GB increase. Using the command "gparted" (graphic display) on a virtual machine instead of fdisk, I see the unallocated new partition 35 G. I have then assigned to the file system and the size of the new partition. NOW, when I type 'fdisk-l' I could see the new partition of 35GB.

My question is that when the size of the virtual machine is increased using Vmware Vsphere client how is using "fdisk-l" does not show the new partition of unllocated. Which command can be used inside the virtual machine to see the new unallocated disk space? If I don't want to use the graphics command "gparted". Any advice would be nice.

    Hello

You can use the separate utility that works in text mode, you must run "parted" / dev / whatever

Then inside parted to be able to view free space to run "print free.

(Another simpler way is to run "parted/dev/whatever print free")

In any case, after the score more, is that you run "fdisk-l" with just a few calculations is easy to find free space.

Just take special attention to the (total) number of cylinders vdisk (start and end columns) and the size of the partitions (blocks column).

For example, you know the real size of vdisk (at the top of the output of 'fdisk-l'). The sum total of bytes blocks partitions less vdisk size will be the free space. Easy, isn't it?

    Hope this answer your doubt

    Best wishes / Saludos.

    Hello

    pachany.IT

I thought I'd create a RAID by enabling it in BIOS and by removing all the virtual disks in the PERCs300 GUI.

BIOS not installed no. found virtual disk. is now what I get, and when I try to boot from a DVD I get nothing.

Mode SATA to ATA in the system BIOS. Who controls the RAID S100 controller that is part of the system chipset Board. It should not be set in RAID mode if you are using a S300 controller; Which is a version of the PCIe controller card.

After getting set correctly, you should have an option when you start to get into the BIOS of the S300 controller. Press the combination of keys and enter the BIOS. Configure your RAID array and output.

After that, you must be able to boot directly to the output of the DVD 2008R2 and complete the installation. If she doesn't always detect not storage then the SBUU start to complete the installation.

If you need help more then provide more information. For example, if you have just installed this S300 then you maybe not it wired correctly. Learn more about your situation means I have to make less assumptions when it provides a response.

  • S130 rebuild with 2 virtual disks on the same disk array

    Hi all

    I have 6 drives 750 GB sata in raid 10 with a s130 controller.

There is a 100 GB virtual disk and a virtual disk of 2 TB.

One of the drives has failed, so I replaced it with a new drive.

I have assigned the new disc on the first virtual disk, and this re-built very well. But he'll also let me assign the remaining space on the new disk on the second virtual drive in the table, it is said that there is no available free disk?

    What can I do here?

    Thank you

    Hi NET1K

It seems that the hard drive that is not in the disk of your virtual disk group 2 (VD).

You may need to put the reader that you have assigned to rebuild the first VD and assign it as a global hot spare to rebuild your disk, instead of virtual disk group offline.

Before doing the procedure reversed, please backup you made recent data.

  • Virtual disk strange behaviour - please help

    Hi all

I wonder if anyone can help. I started to experience a strange problem on one of my VM today.  I have a virtual machine running freenas.  The storage drives the actions of free storage to sit on are physical disks connected directly to the virtual machine and run normally, because of the way the works of freenas real HDD can be small enough and for the virtual machine, it's a prealloue virtual disk is 16 GB in size.  It is the only virtual machine sitting on a physical hard drive 256 GB. Today, I noticed a problem that the file for the virtual machine has become 240 GB in size, is probably not a normal behavior for a 16 GB VM.

I checked snapshots which he had two auto protect snapshots which I deleted and disabled auto protect. This was reported to the size of the folder up to 182 GB.

On the use of exploerer to view the folder it seems to be a large number of files, as shown below. Can someone explain if it should be there?  Also, how else remove them safely.

Thanks in advanceScreen Shot 2015-08-19 at 21.40.58.png

Thanks for the offer, but after a lot of interference and a virtual machine rebuild I managed to solve the problem.

The solution was to set the 2 drives physical independent mode with persistent active. for some reason unknown to me this seems to prevent the creation of multiple disk files, it seems workstation creates them even when there are no snapshots.

Time will tell us but seems to have solved the problems. Fingers crossed

Thanks for all the help guys.

  • Question about virtual disk

I have a qustion about virtual disks

I assigned 5 GB on a virtual disk. Then I realized that I need more space, so I changed to 20 GB.

When I have energised the VM, it always complained not enough space. Even if I 'clearpart-set' in the startup script.

  • Consolidation of many to one of the virtual disks?

    Hello world

I use a XP client inside a Windows 7 host (using 8 workstations).

In the configuration of my XP virtual machine I previously assigned (of 50 gigabytes) of disk space into separate virtual folders, about 2 GB each, as shown below.

    Capture.JPG

I now want to have a single vmdk file, with the pre-allocated 50 GB of capacity.

Is it possible that I can achieve this goal, while keeping my VM in tact? For example can I create a second virtual disk, and then use a cloning tool (from the client) BONE to make a copy to the new virtual drive?

Here, any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Kind regards

    Hello world

This can indeed be done! Because I started with a scalable, split, virtual disk, there were several steps; Here's the gist of these measures-

    (1) using the vmware-vdiskmanager merge files into a single.

    http://hostilecoding.blogspot.com.au/2013/06/VMware-merge-multiple-VMDKs-into-single.html

Note: when running this utility do not forget to include the '2' parameter, which refers to the creation of a virtual disk prealloue, otherwise the following steps (use the shrinkvd program will NOT work!).

Here is a screenshot of the order that worked for me-

    (2) add the newly created virtual disk, 'merged.vmdk' to the existing virtual machine, using these installation instructions.

    https://www.VMware.com/support/WS5/doc/ws_disk_add_virtual.html

    (3) remove the existing virtual machine virtual drive

    (4) to start the Virtual Machine (you will probably be asked if you have moved or copied the VM, I responded with "Proposed").

(Optionally)-rename the virtual disk of "merged" into something else by renaming the files in the ".vmx" and "hard" files.

    (5) using the shrinkvd resize the virtual disk

    http://www.Softpedia.com/get/system/system-miscellaneous/shrinkvd.shtml

Above, note that the first time, I ran the command it failed with the message "ddb.deletable" is the crux of the problem. I just deleted this line in the relevant file "hard" and the command is represented.

Now, when I boot on my virtual XP I use only 24 GB of space, and I am able to transfer the Virtual Machine to a smaller drive. in this case a 30 Gig old SSD.

    I hope this helps others.

  • I tried to convert a virtual disk in Extensible with vmware-vdiskmanager, but an error...

    Hello

I tried to convert a virtual disk in Extensible with vmware-vdiskmanager, but an error...

    1.jpg

' Could not convert the drive: the system cannot find the specified file < 0 x 1900000004 >. '

    No idea what lack us.

I read a few threads on this subject and they say to delete all snapshots. Don't have any as soon as I used the vmrun program to list all snapshots for this virtual machine and it returned 0.

can someone help me with this?

    Thanks in advance,

    Rui

It seems that there is typo in the file extensions of the virtual disk, i.e. '.vdmk' instead of 'hard '!
