publish server esxi and CPU/hardware compatibility .vmx files.

Hello

I have images that have been created and run on my laptop. (architecture intel, 3 GB)

I recently downloaded them to the ESXi 4.0.0 server via the client and unfortunately the images do not work when I import them into inventory.

The server is a dual proc AMD based on HP Proliant server.

They appear unknown.

Is it because of the hardware/cpu does not?

you shouldn't have any problems, run the virtual machine.  I think that your problem is based around the process that allowing you to move the virtual machine.

Try to use VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.0.1.

  • Single server ESXi on CPU with > 6 hearts

    Hello

    As far I understand count max core for server ESXi (free edition) is 6. What happens if I install it on a box of HP DL385G7 with an AMD 6136 (8 cores) CPU? The installation will fail, or only 6 of the 8 cores will address work? The box is listed in the HCL. With the new range of G7 HP servers, it isn't an AMD based DL385 server processor that uses a processor with a basic under 8 account.

    Thank you!

    Julian.

    > I don't think County processor or core are limited to free ESXi.

    CPU do not count, but free ESXi is still limited to 6 hearts. It will work on 8 or 12 core processors, but use only 6 on each physical processor. 12 cores are only available for Advanced and Enterprise Plus.

  • Move VMS between server ESXi and vSphere ESX server

    Dear all,

    I want to move some a vSphere ESX server virtual machines to ESXi server.

    I understand that some users will use CPS to move between the ESX servers, but apparently not for moving between different products.

    I'm just using a slow and prone to error method:

    The files of the virtual machine to my deskop PC of vSphere ESX server and then upload to the ESXi server.

    I would advise you to please all of the methods that is better than this one?

    Help, please.

    Kind regards

    Tommy

    If you got a central storage you can move virtual machines between the two products with vMotion. Since you don't seem to have available vMotion, you pouvez use scp. SCP has nothing to do with ESX/ESXi products. It is a Linux/Unix program which is available in both servers.

    So with the CPS, you need a little less.

    The syntax is like:

    SCP - r/path/to/vm/directory user@esxi:/path/to/new/location

  • 2 Server ESXI and 1 storage

    Hello

    I have ESXi Server (HP) 2 and 1 storage (promise VTrackE610F). Is it possible to put the two server on a single storage and a partition? ESXi should be used on storage.

    Do I have to follow some important and necessary steps? Does anyone have experience in it?

    Hello

    As has already been said the best to do is install ESX in the internal disks of each server and then sharing a logic unit between the 2 servers number, just formats the data store in a server and do a new analysis on the other node.

  • ESXi 5.1 - Exchange 2007 - file Page memory and CPU allocation

    I'm currently migrating a class Cluster CSC Exchange 2007 running on vmware on windows 2008, 2003.  It is also a SCC Cluster.  I followed all of the vmware and MS best practices, but not sure of one thing IM is the size of memory and CPU allocation page/swap file.  I have 5 Esxi hosts and each is running only Exchange 2007 comments according to vmware and MS recommendations when you use the Clustering of CSC.

    Each host has 2 CPUs to 6 cores per processor and 48 gb of Ram and that each host will have only a guest, would like to send it to the guest.  I read somewhere that it is recommended this page exchange 2007 memory size + 10 mb file.  Do I really need to get the page to the size of the file?  250 GB of disk space is a lot for swap files! IM also not sure what to set the allocation processor too.  If someone can point me in the right direction, I would be grateful.

    Thank you

    Dave

    Hi dlargeit,

    First of all, off - welcome to the VMTN forums!

    I'm with Josh26 I've ever seen any recommendations indicating that when a CCS cluster virtualization virtual machine by host is taken in charge. It is recommended to keep only a single node SCC by host (which is true for all virtual clusters or technologies like Exchange CSC/CCR/DAG), but there is nothing specific regarding the keep only a single virtual machine by host.

    On the file page, you are actually right on that.  For Exchange 2007, the paging file must be on the amount of memory configured as well as 10 MB to account for overhead costs of the kernel.  It is recommended by Microsoft and it is planned to provide enough space page Exchange should exchange more provide the necessary overhead if meet you a server failure and need to create a complete memory dump.

    You can find this recommendation here: http://technet.microsoft.com/library/aa996719 (EXCHG.80) .aspx

    In terms of CPU allocation, which should really be made according to your individual needs rather than just give all the resources the VM on the ESXi host.  Microsoft lists the maximum recommended for processor resources (Planning Processor Configurations: Exchange 2007 help) and it says that 12 hearts is the maximum for mailbox or Hub Transport box.  Is your really big enough environment need a lot of CPU resources?  Why not start small and increase it if necessary?

    You are in control of your own destiny in some of these configurations.  If you know the recommended page file size is 10 MB of RAM +, do not give the server more RAM is really needed, or you will have to pay for it in the consumed disk space to host the pagefile.  See the guide to memory resources (Planning Memory Configurations: Exchange 2007 help) to understand the maximum rates of memory for Exchange.  You will see that the maximum memory is 32GB, so there are very few reasons to assign all 48GB of RAM on your server, if it can even use.

    In short, the size of the server based on the real needs and I am confident, that you will have a virtualized Exchange system that performs as well as physical.

  • ESXi does not lend itself to modification of the .vmx file

    Hello

    I use an old distro from Suse Linux 32-bit on a 64-bit VM Workstation.  I modified the file vmx virtual machines with "monitor_control.disable_longmode = 1" in order to force the guest to detect as a 32-bit operating system or a 32-bit application that must run on the Suse installation used client starts correctly.

    Everything works well, but I need to do the same thing on our ESXi server company but have encountered the following problems:

    1. its possible, but not easy to modify the vmx without ssh or ftp access.  Am I missing something here?

    2. our local IT guy hesitates to start hacking the configuration files unless it had to ensure that the other virtual machines, or entire server, be affected by the change

    I would be grateful if someone could a) advise on the best way to edit files on a server ESXi and b .vmx) confirm that changing the vmx on usually file a VM guest interfere with anything else running on the host computer.

    Thanks in advance,

  • Start the vm even in any server ESXi

    Hello, well this is my scenario, I have two servers ESXi, one of them (Server A) is running 3 virtual machines and other (Server B) is empty, each virtual machine is running on a specific LUN (EVA 4400), what I want to do is stop a virtual machine in a server and start it to Server B (the same DTX200 or unit number logic is presented to both ESX servers) does anyone know if this is possible? If so, how?

    Thank you very much

    Yes it is possible, as long as the data store is presented and visible to both ESX(I) hosts. You would stop the virtual machine, unsubscribe and then re - save on the new ESXi host.

    What version of ESXi do you use? If you use ESXi 3.5u2/u3, you can use a script that I wrote which allows for a type of "quick migrate" similar to that of Microsoft's Hyper-V quick Migration (which is not vMotion!) http://communities.VMware.com/docs/doc-9400

    If you use 3.5u4 ESXi, the script will not work because of the recent lockdown of the VI API return to read-only.

    The other option is the manual approach to using the VI Client and stop your virtual machine and then right click on the virtual machine and click on remove inventory. This will cancel your VM of ESXi host A registration and then you want to connect to the Client for ESXi host B VI and browse your store of data in just double check on this topic by searching for your virtual machine, and then click the .vmx file and click on 'Add to inventory,' that you will now be able power over your VM (it is basically what made the script ghettoQuickMigrate)

  • ESXi and OpenFiler

    OK, that's more information for me...

    IM new in the area of esxi, but have used vmware workstation for years...

    I have install esxi on a dell optiplex desktop computer (for test sake)

    and installed

    Server 2003 domain controller 1 vm, dhcp, dns

    Server 2003 with Server services and Altiris deployment pxe

    I can start... a new machine virtual boot (pxe boot) network and the image of a virtual machine with XP using altiris...

    all this is good...

    now that im confused about saying are a SIN...

    I saw freenas and openfiler

    IM install openfiler now but my question is...

    1 files (say in iso format and applications installation media) are in a virtual machine session or may openfiler connect to a hard drive.

    My goal is just to take an ide drive... connect to a desktop computer and copy on a ton of media in iso format and applications...

    to connect that back to the esxi and use it as a file server...

    If im a little confused on the part...

    IM testing things that we will get our dell blades operational soon and im trying to emulate what we have in there... I just don't understand how you have a file server that can simply use drives without OS...

    confused? I'm so...

    If you install OpenFiler, it will allow you to take the space that OpenFiler can see and share on the network.  You can do it in format NAS, which means that you share space as UNIX (NFS format) network drive or network Windows (CIFS) drive.  CIFS will allow you to map as a drive of Windows machines.  What I wanted to say, it is that you won't be able to take this drive somewhere else for a different operating system and recognized her as you think.

  • How can I register all of the VMX files found in a list of stores of data with new names

    Hello-

    I'm trying to find a way to search through a given list of data and each discover a warehouse. VMX file, add this machine in the inventory I want to prepend the name of the machine as something different. That is to say, instead of "Machine1", I wish it were registetred as "auto-Computer1.  So, imagine I have an empty data center with 4 warehouses of data stored in a table $arrDatastoreToInclude.  I want to loop through each of these data stores and add all the VMX files I found back in the inventory.

    I know that I can use the following to get data warehouses I want:

    $dsindatacenter = get-data center $DataCenterName | Get-Datastore? | {$arrDatastoreToInclude - contains $_.} Name}

    But I have no idea how to analyze these data stores for the VMX files and what command to add them in the inventory.  Can anyone help?

    Try the following, it is based on the script of the position that Robert mentioned.

    You will need to provide a file (in $VMFolder) where unregistered virtual machines will be stored.

    The Set-VM cmdlet will take care of the rename.

    $DatacenterName = "MyDatacenter" $arrDatastoreToInclude = "DS1","DS2","DS3","DS4"

    $dc = Get-DataCenter $DataCenterName $dsindatacenter =  Get-Datastore -Datacenter $dc | ?{$arrDatastoreToInclude -contains $_.Name}

    $VMFolder = "MyFolder"
    $ESXHost = Get-VMHost -Location $dc | select -First 1
    foreach($Datastore in $dsindatacenter) {
        # Collect .vmx paths of registered VMs on the datastore     $registered = @{}
        Get-VM -Datastore $Datastore | %{$_.Extensiondata.LayoutEx.File | where {$_.Name -like "*.vmx"} | %{$registered.Add($_.Name,$true)}}

       # Set up Search for .VMX Files in Datastore New-PSDrive -Name TgtDS -Location $Datastore -PSProvider VimDatastore -Root '\' | Out-Null $unregistered = @(Get-ChildItem -Path TgtDS: -Recurse | where {$_.FolderPath -notmatch ".snapshot" -and $_.Name -like "*.vmx" -and !$registered.ContainsKey($_.Name)})
        Remove-PSDrive -Name TgtDS
       #Register all .vmx Files as VMs on the datastore   foreach($VMXFile in $unregistered) {
            New-VM -VMFilePath $VMXFile.DatastoreFullPath -VMHost $ESXHost -Location $VMFolder |
            Set-VM -Name ("Auto-" + $_.Name)
       }
    }

    Unregistered virtual machines will be saved with Displayname that is present in the VMX file.

    If this would cause a conflict with VM already registered, you can use the Name of the cmdlet New-VM parameter

  • A clustrer function of Intel and AMD mixed server ESXi does

    We do not have a lot of servers and according to virtualize, three ESXi servers be enough. Can I get an another DL380p of the G8 and have a cluster of two servers Intel ESXi based and a base of AMD server or all three servers should I run the same processor/vendor?

    Thank you.

    A.

    Cluster of features such as vMotion (live migration) require processors from the same provider, supporting a common mode of EVC.

    Where did you read that the AMD need hosts two processors? Currently I'm not aware of such a requirement.

  • What should be the ESXi VM CPU settings on a server of type hyperthreading?

    What should be the CPU of VM VMware ESXi settings on a server of type hyperthreading?

    I have read the section of the hyper-threading http://www.VMware.com/PDF/Perf_Best_Practices_vSphere4.0.PDF .  He says:

    "Contrary to have twice more processor cores, which can
    about double performance - hyper-threading can provide anywhere from slight to significant
    increase in the performance of the system while keeping the pipeline of the most busy processor.

    He goes on to say:

    "An ESX system enabled for hyper-threading must behave almost exactly like the system without it. Logic
    processors on the same core had adjacent numbers of CPU, so CPU 0 and 1 are on the first core processors
    2 and 3 are on the second carrot and so on. »

    Logic:

    For VMware ESXi on hyper-threaded servers, what logically follows in my mind is:

    1. If a virtual machine requires the power of 2 hearts, I must specify 4 CPUs in the virtual machine settings.

    2. it is never effective not to assign any number of CPUS, which is not an even multiple of 2.  Thus, the minimum number of CPUs in the virtual machine settings must be 2.

    3 Server, in regard to the number of cores necessary to support the VMs system and planning remains the same for both hyperthreading and non-Hyperthreaded servers.  However, the hyper-threaded server deployment requires double the number of CPUS in the settings of the virtual machine to keep similar to a non-Hyperthreaded server performance and exploit the benefits of hyper-threading.

    4. when I ssh in the OS and see CPU 0, 1, 2, and 3, CPU 0 and 1 are the first kernel and CPU 2 and 3 are the second core.

    Question:

    This logic is correct?

    Logic:

    For VMware ESXi on hyper-threaded servers, what logically follows in my mind is:

    1. If a virtual machine requires the power of 2 hearts, I must specify 4 CPUs in the virtual machine settings.

    No, a vCPU get his plans for the base, either directly or when Hyperthreading is enabled (which makes the guest OS don't know, but ESX) via a logical processor generated by Hyperthreading. So if you want the client to use two hearts, assign two vCPU.

    2. it is never effective not to assign any number of CPUS, which is not an even multiple of 2.  Thus, the minimum number of CPUs in the virtual machine settings must be 2.

    The minimum number should be one vCPU. There is no guest without this vCPU. In fact, you should start with one vCPU when possible and increase the number when you have a good reason or really see a performance gain. This is because ESX must wait for the number of free kernels until it can plan the work of a SMP guest. So, if the client has two of vCPU he has two free cores. First, it must wait for these hearts to become free (which slows the guest) and then it occupies two hearts (which could slow down the other guests in function of the number of available cores). If Hyperthreading is enabled, ESX may plan the work faster, but always real treatment cannot be done by a physical core. For ESX 4 there are better SMP scheduling mechanisms, but these restrictions continue to apply generally. (http://communities.vmware.com/message/1692107#1692107)

    3 Server, in regard to the number of cores necessary to support the VMs system and planning remains the same for both hyperthreading and non-Hyperthreaded servers.

    Yes.

    However, the hyper-threaded server deployment requires double the number of CPUS in the settings of the virtual machine to keep similar to a non-Hyperthreaded server performance and exploit the benefits of hyper-threading.

    Lol Hyperthreading is either neutral, that it does not adversely affect the performance of the means or increase performance slightly due to faster programming (not treatment!).
