Question mark flashing at startup

Spring 2011 MBP with EL Capitan.  Thus, used my MBP last night and he started beachballing and force apps to quit smoking, I started but performance has not improved and the beachballing continued.  Was not yet able to click on the Apple icon to restart.  So, off the power by using the power button to restart as I did several times.  Reverse and get the screen gray with the folder icon and flashing question mark.  Completely bewildered, because I have never seen it before.  Restart again trying to reset the LANDAU thought that might have some effect, nothing will do. So, do a quick search on the old smartphone and find out how to get into recovery mode.  Go to the utility disk and look for my HARD drive, but he's not here.  Only disk 0 and then below Base of OS X system, something like that, don't remember what he said exactly.  Yes, I knocked at the realization that my HARD drive is erased, but I wonder if it is indeed cleared or if some kind of virus or something could have caused this and that, somewhere, my HARD drive is still intact.  I know it's probably a long shot and wishful thinking, but I'm exploring all the possibilities before you restore from my backup.  I have not saved in a few months, so I really hope this is the case, because I've probably lost some important stuff...

Any help would be appreciated...

Thank you!!

    Hi guys,.

I have been a frequent visitor to the community of support here, but I'm a poster for the first time, so please forgive any lack of post I suffer from the label. I saw this problem here much and seem me to always see the same advice to fix, but I have never seen anyone who treat the same symptoms I had with my camera.

My question all started when I tried to save something for the reader, and he said to me "you are not allowed to save this destination" (something to that effect). Then it progressed to a question on my Macbook to spontaneous freezing. It would freeze just constantly and I always have to force offshore. When I would try to start the machine up, it's always 50-50 chance that it should start successfully, often welcomed by the famous question mark flashing folder. I constantly by visiting an Apple store for the last year and a half on this topic and after countless visits, they insist that there is no problem that they can find. They always say down to "permission error", problems of BONE that have been resolved by resettlement and a faulty hard drive. I've dealt with them during this period and and still have this machine properly repaired on any occasion. The problem persists always just after I take the machine home and start right away, its still there.

As time went on this issue, I noticed that the machine would often freezing when moved, for example moved a table at my knees etc. This has some time until that I have raised to clean the table under one day and then tried to do turn on and nothing. The machine refused to start, only to give me the question mark flashing folder. I tried to boot into recovery mode by using CMD - R and tried to reinstall the OSX, I read that it is a common solution, but whenever I start recovery mode "Macintosh HD" is not where. So I can't even try a reinstall of OSX.

A man IT in my former work place had examined this issue before on another machine, and he said he had replaced the cable of HDD of the machines as the previous was damaged. When toggled, he said that the machine was working fine. It would be logical, as if the cable is already damaged and loose, I'm sure that the movement might just disconnect. I raise this issue because it is of NEVER once offered all the time, I in dealing with this issue and on further investigation in the apple forums and this seems to be a very common problem.

This appeared on a boot up once and never since.

And that's what I see at every boot up to now.

I'm sorry to bombard all the world with so much information on this subject, but my frustration is quickly turning into madness on this issue, which have no one at Apple after countless visits being able to fix the problem. As it is the main culprit for me, the HARD disk cable, but I would not assume know better that some of you have known many more people.

Any information or help that guys could pass my way would be greatly appreciated I was apparently no help from Apple repair personnel. If you have read and thought about all this I applaud you and owe you a drink at the mercy.

    Hi Yogi Wynne:

I agree with your friend IT. Looks like the SATA hard drive cable has problems.

The inside of your computer is not as smooth on the outside and rubs it hard against the SATA cable and can cause one of the traces in the short cable is causing hard drive problems.

Here's where you can get a replacement cable, they are very fragile. https://www.iFixit.com/store/Mac/MacBook-Pro-13-inch-unibody-mid-2009-mid-2010-H ard-car-Cable/IF163-013-1

Here's a video that shows what could happen. https://www.YouTube.com/watch?v=Amg5w0rlwDo

I might change the SATA cable and see if the problem persists.

  • iMac G3 tray charger stuck on the gray screen with question mark flashing folder

I recently bought an iMac G3 (charger tray, 333 MHz, M4984) and when I try to boot from an OS installation disc 10.3, there will remain only blocked on the gray screen with folder flashing with the question mark. Not only it does not maintain the keys C or Option, but it will not start up any combination of keys, such as resetting the PRAM or the NVRAM. It just starts and stays on the screen with the flashing folder does nothing. It CAN read the keyboard, because I can turn on the computer with the keyboard, it just won't start to the top of any disk or any combination of keys. Any ideas on what could be the problem? I just replaced the hard drive, but it was the same before I replaced the hard drive as well. In addition, the iMac had apparently OS 8.6 installed on it when it came, and I think I need to move to OS 9 and do a firmware update before you install OS X (correct me if I'm wrong), but I can not do because the iMac does start not in general of any combination of keys. Thanks in advance, any help is appreciated.

It took charger slot, but I think that optional for the bin.  I think that you can upgrade the firmware with 8.6 for trays.

You may need to reset the PRAM and NVRAM and Mac's Open Firmware. Stop the Mac, then it turns on and before the screen lights up, quickly down the command, Option, P, and R keys, until the Mac rang twice more after the power to chime.

Then, before that lights up the screen, hold down the command-Option-O-F until the Open Firmware appears. Then enter these lines, and then press return after each of them:

    Reset-nvram

    Configure default

    Reset-all

"The reset-all command should restart your Mac. If so, you have successfully reset the Open Firmware settings. »

  • MacBook Pro question mark flashing, no wifi, only own internet connection

I have a flashing question mark on start up with my MacBook Pro. Through the process of restarting, but it asks me to choose a wifi network. I did not, as my computer has its own internet connection, so can not continue to the next step. Help please?

If you are connected to internet through being directly connected to a modem via ethernet. You should be able to ignore the WIFI configuration prompt. Have you used the option of disk utility to check the repair or erase the disc? The withdrawal volume. You can also try using command/Option/R for recovery to see if you can use ethernet. I did once and trying to remember how I did it.

  • Stuck flashing question mark.

I had a few circle of problems of death. I've formatted it to el Capitan. I had problems in formatting as well. But when I did a clean install to external hard drive, I was able to format correctly without taking a lot of time. But still sometimes the circle of death occurred even when I had enough disk space, and also when I don't have a heavy use of Mac.

Now when I was surfing, all of a sudden my Mac stop automatically and when I rebooted him question mark flashing appears. Tried all the things available on net - but is not able to detect my drive hard back. So not able to repair or use first aid for hard disk and no option to format.

So according to the different peoples view I think it's perhaps because of one of these:

    1 hard drive failure.

    2. defective cable.

I'll be very grateful if someone can help me with this.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Senoritalife,

Yes, it sounds like you may have a defective hard drive, or the fastening cable that became it loose. I advise to visit your local apple store and have then check hard drive status.

Also, please try all the steps in this article before contacting the genius of Apple: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204323

We have no way of knowing exactly what you have tried that doesn't work unless you tell us. A flashing question mark boot means that your Mac is unable to locate a startup disk to boot from.

If you haven't tried... start your Mac holding the key Option. That should launch the boot window manager have been, you can select the startup disk, and then click on restart.

If this does not help, you will need to take the Mac for the service.

I tried to delete personal files on my MacBook (late 2008) to trade. During this process, the computer lost some function when deleting some documents; would not open apps but app could bounce constantly once selected and would not restart or shut down, had to manually hold the power button to turn off.

This continued for more than 45 minutes + and whenever I try to turn it off and restart it manually.

  • Mac mini (late 2012) flashing - question mark folder recovery does not work

    Hi all

earlier today, I upgraded my Mac mini (end 2012) to the latest version of macOS Sierra.

After 1 hour of use, I realized that many of my plugins FCPX were not working.

I contacted the developers, and they said does not update the plugins and they told me to go back to El Capitan.

I decided to listen to them and try to downgrade my OS.

I restarted the Mac and held down Cmd - R or something like that that took me to the disk utility screen.

Then I went down to dinner, and when I returned 30 minutes later my Mac had entered the sleep mode for some reason any.

I woke up the Mac and 40 seconds later the power went out for 5-10 minutes.

After the blackout, I restarted my Mac that took me to a black screen with a flashing question mark folder.

I followed some tutorials online (including how to enter get - and the recovery of internet mode), but after a while even restoration of the internet shows me the flashing question mark folder.

I don't know what to do.

And no - unfortunately I don't have a Time Machine backup.

But I have a backup with all my most important files.

Is it possible to force the Mac to reset itself or something like that?

    Help, please.

    Best regards

  • MacBook 2012 folder question mark at startup

Hi, I have a Macbook 2012 model I ordered in late 2014 (this is a non-retina display Macbook pro with the Intel i7 and 8 GB of RAM). In Norway, we have what we call "reklamasjonsrett" which means that any consumer electronic retailers are required by law to provide security for laptops for at least five years. I bought the computer directly out of the Norwegian online apple store.

My Macbook does not just start and start in recovery mode reveals that it recognizes none of my passwords and when you try to reinstall OS X disk utility reveals problems to reach the HARD drive. My sister seems to have a similar problem with an older model 2012, Macbook pro, and from what I've heard there is a fragile HARD drive cable that this model is known to have a problem with.

Where can I get this fixed a problem? I was very careful with my computer the past 1.5 years and I find it very disappointing for cases of hardware failure this early in the life cycle of such a product - initially, I bought a Macbook for my studies of computer science because I like the idea of having a Unix system and still be able to run some software main owners now I'm just irritated to find such similar material same basic failures in a product at the price of 2 times that of laptops.

If you see a folder with a question mark appears instead of the Apple logo, it means that your Mac could not find a local or network boot disk. This can occur if the drive selected in the pane of the system preferences Startup disk is not available.  > System Preferences >Startup disk from wait a few seconds to see if your Mac is able to locate the startup disk, you specified.
