RAID 5 Config of hot spare

Hello

I have setup a R510 with raid 5 with 2 drives hot spares. Let's say a player fail and the HS kick, then I replaced the bad HD. What happens to the reader that is initially configured as a hot spare? It resets as a hot spare, or do I need to reconfigure and make HS default again?

Once relief rebuilt, he is an active member of the table. The new disks in the system will have to manually assign as the new hot spare.

  • Reuse a RAID disk and hot spare procedure

My questions are for a PE R720xd with the PERC RAID internal H710P controller.

I have replaced several RAID drives in the past, but I never did this before, so I was hoping to confirm my procedure for hard drives hot swap. A drive failed on one of my live servers. In the past I would always bring back the server during a maintenance window and replace the drive by using the configuration utility to make sure everything went correctly. This particular server has become a system of very high availability, so I was hoping to use for hot spare option do without bring down the server.

The other issue is that Dell is not in stock on the disk, I need so I intend to use a same car I replaced recently on a server off-production that has already been fixed in a RAID1 in another Dell R720 Server table. Any time, I have never replaced a RAID drive, I always used a new drive out-of-the-box, so I'm also not 100% on how to prepare the drive to use for a new RAID array.

I thought I am brings the donor server down and come off the drive I want to enjoy this the RAID array server using the configuration utility. So a question is - is there anything else I need to do preparation used in car for use in the new table?

With respect to hot-swapping which lead to the new array, is it really as simple as just popping one out and put a new in? Can I do to confirm it has taken - apart from just confirming that the lights blink like crazy during synchronization?

    Thanks for your understanding!

    C.Short,

You can switch the drive, but it will be not just to rebuild there is data on the hard drive. So when this disc is inserted, it will show foreign. You will need to do is to boot to the controller (Ctrl + R) and then CLEAR the foreign Configuration. Once completed, then you will be able to rebuild the disk on the virtual disk, you can do the BIOS of the controller, or from the OpenManage web interface (depending on the operating system).

Let me know if it helps.

  • Reference Dell MD3220 virtual disk - hot spare in use

We have a Dell MD3220.  one of the hard drives was taken out by an end-user trying to exchange a defective disc. Then after that the good player has replaced the old drive was placed back into the appropriate slot. Now we have a hot spare (enclosure 0, slot 23) in lieu of an another hot spare (attachment 2, slot 22). The hot spare that is subbed for has been replaced by two new hard drives now and the hot spare in use has still not disappeared. any suggestions on what to do next?

Virtual disk - hot spare in use

    Storage array: MD3220
    Disk group: 2
Physical disk failure in the: attachment 2, slot 22
         Action (deletion) enabled service:  NO.
LED of action on service component:  NO.
Replaced with a physical disk to: enclosure 0, slot 23
      Virtual disks: 3
         RAID level: 5
         Status:  Gradient

    Hello, GalaxyTechService.

It is perhaps not as complicated as it may seem, in fact. There is a wizard that you can use to return the disk to the raid set. Right-click the affected virtual disk and select 'Replace physical disk' and use the wizard that opens.

In the upper area will be "missing disks", and in the lower field will be options available to replace them.

    Then just follow the steps.

Let me know how it goes.

  • Has no disk in MD3000i - no not the kick in hot spare

    Hello

I'm having a lot of problems with this table.

First a defective disc.  The hot spare does not activate.  Or maybe that was the case, but it did not work because I got an error message "physical disk failure - failure of reconstruction.

Then another disc has no so the vdisk went offline.

We had a spare provided and it was put in the table.  But when I go on change-> replace the physical disks in Storage Manager it tells me that "there no physical disk defective or missing in this storage array that can be replaced by using the function to replace physical disks."

How can I go about getting the vdisk upward and execution?

    Thank you

    Steve

If after looking at the beam of support I see where you have the 2 has no drives hard and saw where reconstruction has failed. I see that FW is a bit outdated, but this is not to say exactly why reconstruction failed. I guess you don't have access to the data on the VD. The disc in the slot 0.1 seems to be the last disk that failed. An option that we would try to force online and get the table in a degraded state, so that we can have a backup if you have not already. However, if you do not have a backup your best bet would be to get the 2 new drives and re - create the RAID array and restore your data.

To force the disk online, you will need to enter the SMCli and use the command:

    SMcli - n {name} - c "revive physicalDisk [0,1];

If this does not work and that you are not able to get a backup copy, then I recommend you get in on a company like lead investors to 1-800-440-1904. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

  • Change your state of global hot spare on loan

Question 1: I have a reference dell power edge 2950 with perc 6 / i integrated. I have four 450 GB RAID 5 drives, a disk as a global hot spare, and a disk without operating with State loans. Can I change the State of this hot spare to prepare so I can add another raid 1 logic with two 450 GB drives? Should what steps I take?

Question 2: Physical disk 0:0:1 is damaged and I need to replace it. As I said I have a disk without exploitation, disc 1:0:5. Can I remove the drive without exploitation and replace the damaged one(0:0:1); remove the disc at the same time two will damage the server?

    1. Yes. You must delete the assignment the rescue. This is done either on the display of physical disks (World Relief) or virtual disks (dedicated relief).

    2. remove both drives at the same time will not damage the server. This will damage your table if you remove two ACTIVE RAID 5 with disks, but not a relief. Remove the drive bad "to hot' (do not feed out to replace), and then insert the disc before doing nothing).

  • 2950 HDD D80A Firmware Update for the dedicated hot spares

I have a 2950 III with 8 Fujitsu 146 GB drives installed in a RAID 10 array. The first six discs are configured for use in a virtual disk with the last two records configured to be used as a dedicated hot spare. OMSA describes the version of the firmware of these two disks 0102. I ran the update of the firmware as described here:

    http://www.Dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails/product/PowerEdge-2950?driverId=F50fd

The six drives in the virtual disk just successfully upgraded to the version of the firmware D80A. Two rescue disks have not been tempted. I tried to run the Setup again and Setup note that installed and packaged versions are both D80A, but OMSA said that two rescue disks are always at 0102.

This is expected behavior? Spare disks are treated differently? If so, the firmware update as they are now or have I trade in the virtual disk to do the upgrade?

The link does not work for me earlier... it's working now.  There is also a utility 'nautilus' which can be used on Dell readers... it will update all readers of Dell, regardless of the make and model... preventing you from having to download a dozen different services.

Yes, that is why the update is a failure: Dell firmware cannot be updated with the firmware of the sale to the retail/credits, and retail/Generic firmware cannot be updated with the Dell firmware.

  • Md3220 and md1220 combo, how to configure any global hot spare parts.

The MD3220 is full of 300 GB 15K SAS drives the MD1220 is full 1 TB NL 'SAS' 7.2 K disks. The two boxes have discs 22 & 23 unused in the goal is relief. However all the mechanisms that I use to create hot household simply attaches all four disks to two speakers. I'd rather have two spare drives only protect readers in their own enclosure. Interestingly enough, I asked the software dell 'automatic configuration' (sic) the hot spare and he decided ONLY two use 1 TB drives and use them to protect the two speakers. In addition, I was quite puzzled as to why he also allowed me to do it manually the absurd configuration to allow a 300 GB drive protect a forum composed of 24 1 TB disks. In any case, is it possible to have host associated with a case (or disk group) spare parts. ? Thank you.

You can't dedicate a hot spare in a picture of MD3k-series. If a hot spare will succeed for any player in any long case that the size of the spare drive is the same or larger than the failed drive.

  • Add the hot spare on Poweredge T430

    Hello

I have a Poweredge T430 with a PERC H330, I add another drive to have as a spare.

I did all the step and show car ready in the physical disk, now when I go on the virtual disk 0 and try to assign immediate replacement without hard drive shows, that I. m do were bad?

The drive is ready and good to go, is the same model and size, etc., how can I now add to the virtual disk.

    ndaniel
I see in the physical disk as a global hot spare drive and ready, maybe I need to remove it from the overall immediate focus on this virtual disk replacement I have?

Hot spare is not a property of the virtual disk. Yes, you will need to cancel the assignment as a global hot spare to assign as a dedicated hot spare drive. If you only have a virtual disk, then it is not serious if it is global or dedicated.

  • HP rp5800 Raid 1 config

    Greetings and salutations.

The company I work for sure recently an agreement with HP to get the rp5800 is provided as a server for our customers.

right now, we're trying to get the raid fuction working with 2 x 500 GB seagate HARD drive, when I noticed that the 2 HARD drives have a different firmware that they run on.

    HDD1 = ST3500413A5 with Firmware = HP64

    HDD2 = ST500DM002 with Firmware = JC4B

My question is. Differs from the firmware affect the 2 HDD Raid 1 configuration. If so, how?

    Concerning

    Hello

If the SATA emulation mode is not set to RAID, then CTRL + I will not work.  You will find in the bios.  If you do not see emulation SATA RAID then your server has an embedded RAID function.

Before making any changes, back up everything and make sure that you have a set of recovery disks.

Read this Microsoft MrFixit article where you experience this problem.  Remember to update the driver Intel Rapid Storage Technology. prior to activating parring to RAID in the bios.

In theory, activation RAID 1 pairing will copy 1 HD on HD 2 (same size or larger) and shouldn't cause a loss of data. Backs up only as previously suggested in case something goes wrong.  RAID 1 migration will take a while as HD 1 must be bit mapped (the copy process) for HD 2, so be patient.

Another approach would be to activate RAID parring and then do a complete new installation of the operating system, and then restore your data.

  • Win 7 hot spare

Issue of information - if I have a set of diskettes of rescue for Vista I need to do a series for Win 7 when I update in October?

Yes, you will need to create your own. If you need an emergency bootbale disk,

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Backup and restoration will create the rescue disk.

I use Acronis 2009 to perform a full backup which I store on external drive.

    Hello;

Let me welcome you on the HP forums!

I read your post about wanting to create a backup of your system and wanted to help.

What I would say, because I have been using it without problem for years, is using a third party tool known as Macrium Reflect.

Macrium reflect (MR) provides a FREE version that can be used to image and restore partitions or drives together.

What I recommend is the following:
    (1) download and install Macrium reflect (MR)
    (2) run M. and choose the option: "Create an image of the partition (s) required to backup and restore Windows" to write a full backup to an external drive or USB key
    (3) use the option to create a CD or a USB startup key

My experience is that SIR, when you use the option of Compression high, typically allows to compress the image file recorded at about 50% of the space USED in the OS partition.  This means that if you have a 40GB and 80GB OS partition is used, MR must only about 20 GB to store the image file.

I use all the time and it usually takes less than 10 minutes to make the backup of the image and at the same time or less do a restore.

In addition, MR has the ability to add a recovery Boot Menu entry.  This then allows you to boot into Windows re, and then you can use it to do a restore - when you cannot start Windows!

NOW, you have the means to restore a full system that works for the external hard drive or USB key in a few minutes.

If you need more information, then visit their Web site: http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

    Good luck

  • Configuration RAID, pins or partitions?

We are about to install a new set of disks. 12 x 450 GB SAS drives. We already have a tray that has 12 disks in and is currently split with 6 disks in RAID 10 and 5 RAID 5 with a hot spare.

Looks like I have 2 options during the installation of the new status bar

1 rebuild the two trays. Have 1 tray with RAID10, so using all 12 drives in a configuration of RAID 10 giving me 6-pin can be used. The 2nd tray will be 11 disks in RAID 5, giving me 10 usable pins. I'll use a global hot spare.

2 - having 2 LUNS per tray. Each tray would have 1 LUN RAID 10 using 6-disc so have used 3-axis and 1 unit logic RAID 5 with 5 discs number so have 4 pins that can be used.

Whether or not to have pins or more partitions MON (at the level of storage). Several axes implies a higher throughput, but more partitions less pretension.

    Any ideas would be great

    Thanks - Oli

If you don't want to reconfigure the existing tray, I suggest that you configure the new Tablet as RAID 10 (all disks) and present it in two volumes (or several) to the ESX host. Rather than concatenating all volumes in a large data store, I actually go with several datatores and distribute the VM on data warehouses.

  • Local storage issue

Is it possible for me to determine how local storage on one of my guests of ESXi5 has been configured / allocated? I have a HP DL host that has 8 local 146 GB drives and I have a need to re - create the same config.

I do not set up the host so I'm not sure of the way space has been split. I'm sure it was configuring RAID 5 with a hot spare, but that's all.

The host is online and I can't restart / consider offline consideration with HP SMart Start.

    Ideas?

    Thank you

You only have local disks? In this case to predict the output of

  • EqualLogic PS6000E Setup

    Hi guys,.

I just got 4 of EqualLogic PS6000E a few days ago.

They are each equipped with 16 drives of 1 TB.

'The Plan' has been implemented two PS6000 in our datacenter, and the other two in the center of another division data stick on our campus... They are located about a block away... And then breed them.

    I have a few questions.

Currently, we use a MD3000i, and it is implemented in accordance with the recommendations of dell, with NICs for iSCSI on separate subnets.

Is it possible to set up the boxes EqualLogic to use separate subnets as well?

I know that you create a group with an IP address, and it distributes magically load to the ps6000 NIC.

Do these network adapters that must all be on the same subnet?

If I create a group with the 192.168.11.1 IP address, can I have a config like this on my PS6000?:

    eth0: 192.168.11.2

    eth1: 192.168.11.3

    eth2: 192.168.12.2

    eth3: 192.168.12.3

Also, what is the best policy of Multipathing to use?

The MD3000i is configured to use Round-Robin.

I did a quick test with RR on the PS6000 and it seems not a little better, but I don't want to screw up something and end up opening a black hole or anything like that.

    Regarding Raid levels...

We used to use RAID 5 on just about everything, but we are studying other options here.

RAID 10 could cost us too much disk space.

So I am looking for RAID 50 with two hot-spare parts.

My boss is a bit excited to Raid 6. I have not used, but what I read leads me to believe that there will eventually be a brake performance.

And if the performance is not good I'll never hear the end of it.

Ideas or points of view until I stick those guys into production would be appreciated.

    Thank you!

    Jason

Reference page 49 of iSCSI SAN http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_40_iscsi_san_cfg.pdf, the Configuration Guide for information on setting up the EqualLogic to work with VMware.  Specifically the Multipathing.

All IPs EqualLogic can't be on the same subnet configuration of practice and functioning.  I did otherwise once or twice for specific reasons of management during Setup and the EqualLogic remained functional but recorded some errors related to the fair reestabishing iSCSI connectivity to the customer who would influence production performance.

You can begin to RAID 10 and then convert to RAID 50 only when additional space is needed.   This conversion can be completed in a few hours this weekend without a break in service.  In many scenarios RAID 50 performance will be just fine: it all depends on exactly what performance your applications need.  If you have a large number of virtual machines simultaneously generate I/O and then model I/O to the SAN ends up living being, rather than sequential.  With applications that are sensitive to latency high input/output, the combined impact increased random and RAID 50 access performance can be noticed and must be resolved either by / or a RAID 10 configuration or more pins by adding another shelf for the storage group.  If you have already decided to put two shelves in a storage group to each site so you will already get some of the benefits of spreading the e/s on several axes.

  • MD1000

    Just had a quick question

I have a Dell 1950 and you want to add a MD1000.  From my understanding, I can't use a MD3000 and get use all drives in a single Bay only on the MD1000?  I want to be able to put the table in Raid 5 with a perc card 6 and be able to see the total storage as a drive (15-1 TB disks in RAID 5 with a hot spare) so I want to see ~ 12TB from a Windows 2003 server.  Is this possible with an MD1000 or 3000?
