MD1000
Just had a quick question
I have a Dell 1950 and you want to add a MD1000. From my understanding, I can't use a MD3000 and get use all drives in a single Bay only on the MD1000? I want to be able to put the table in Raid 5 with a perc card 6 and be able to see the total storage as a drive (15-1 TB disks in RAID 5 with a hot spare) so I want to see ~ 12TB from a Windows 2003 server. Is this possible with an MD1000 or 3000?

MD1000 thus slows the transfer of large files
We have two MD1000 SAS attached to a Dell R710 Server storage arrays. During a large file transfer (40 + GB) at one of the tables MD1000 it will slow down the way down for analysis. It seems as if it is slowing down at the same location every time we try to transfer a file. The another MD1000 connected to the server has no problems with file transfers. This only happens when we copy to the MD1000. Copy of the MD1000 works as it should. Smaller files transfer copy very well. The Dell Server Manager shows no errors with everything. PERC card batteries are low or bad. Any suggestion is appreciated!
Hello, jsalyer350.
It seems to me that your PERC could be set in mode 'Writing with' - where data passes the cache and writing "across" the disks. This can be VERY time consuming, because you are waiting for the real moving parts. PERC would be required to be paid in "Writing Back" mode, where you can make using the cache of the and have a single stream of data on the disks.
PERC can be put into "Write-Through" mode if the battery is not, loses the ability to charge to hold the cache, etc. Maybe the battery charge lost and then has been charged, but the setting has never changed.
You should find this setting in OMSA, otherwise after back and let me know.
I hope this helps. Have a great rest of the week.

It's a house build for a media server, so it is also my first foray in 2012 (essentials) and OMSA server... so I probably did something wrong.
I have an MD1000 with 4 drives connected to a sas 4TB sas 6/e card running a parity of storage of ReFS.
Everything seems to work fine, but I don't see the MD1000 in point 8.1 of the OMSA. I see the sas 6 map and its firmware / driver, etc., but the MD1000 does not appear anywhere. I want to be able to view its levels of temp, etc. (mainly because I intend to replace the quietest power supply fans and want to know if there is a big difference in time.)
How can I me he stand?
Hello hifiaudio23,
So for a MD1000, it must be fixed on a raid controller & not only one SAS 6 gb card. When we sold these systems normally, they came with a PERC (Poweredge Expandable Raid Controller) that would go into your server, and then you could see the MD1000. Is your card 6/e SAS, raid controller card or just a Non-Raid SAS 6/e card?
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

My employer has recently acquired 2 powervault MD1000s and it is my job to restore the default values for sale. I just got the password reset cable, but I can't find any documentation pertaining to orders or any other reference in the manuals or online. What should I do to clear the passwords and reset these default units? The source of these units is a large University who refuse to divulge any information, and I do not have a contract of Dell of any kind. Support Dell will help? I have all of the options have here? Any input appreciated.

Hello bahauser,
On an MD1000 configurations are preserved on a PERC card that is attached to the server as a PERC 5 or 6 PERC. So if you get a PERC card then all you need to do is hit CTRL + R & who get up in the boot controller card when it checks all the expansion cards & happens to PERC. Once in the bios the card controller, then you can go to the leadership of VD & remove all virtual disks. Also, you only need the cable to reset password for an MD3000 or unit higher. Is there a MD3000 & the MD1000 is attached to it?
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

MD1000 unified Mode and 2 Active Directory servers
Hi all, I'm no expert with the servers, but I get by well enough.
I currently have 2 identical servers poweredge 2950
One is a server to the server's active directory master windows 2012 and the other is the same, but the slave of the mirror.
I have a Powervault MD1000 connected to the master ActiveDirectory controller, but I thought to myself, not to award good people being able to connect on the backup to secondary, they cannot access the md1000 where all their files.
Then question, I currently have the MD1000 unified mode. Is it possible to connect the other server until the other side or anywhere elsewhere that it is also showing on the slave?
That way if the PDC goes down, people can still connect and access their files on the MD1000.
I hope that all the senses.
If not, does anyone have a suggestion for how they would accomplish this?
This is not an option with a MD1000. Do you need raid controllers that communicate with eachother, that is not an option with the PERC5E/6th/800/810.
Shared storage that you have in mind requires specific hardware and some software.
For hardware, you would need a SAN as a MD3000 and could then set the MD1000 to the MD3000 (this assumes you have Dell certified discs (the MD1000 does not require this, but the MD3000 does)).
With regard to the software; you would have to set up a cluster, which should really be done with ad servers (but the servers need to be joined to an ad).

Join a new MD1000 to an MD3000 existing query
I'm as confused as if I connect our new MD1000 to our exisiting MD3000 in unified mode or in shared mode. Our existing MD3000 has 2 controllers host at the back of the it. Our new MD1000 has a primary EMM and a secondary EMM. What I can do I connect the MD3000 the MD1000 in shared Mode by running a cable from the "in" on the primary EMM in the MD1000 to the available port in the first controller on the MD3000 host (slot 0) then by running a second cable from the 'in' on the secondary EMM in the MD1000 to the available port on the second controller on the MD3000 host (slot 1).
Can you confirm that the above is what I have to do?
Also looking at the requirements for adding the MD1000 it is mentioned that I need to have the following:
"Developing an existing Md3000 with a new Md1000 chassis system".
Follow these steps to fix a new MD1000 to an MD3000 existing extension
attachment.
NOTICE: The mode dial must be in the position of the mode "Uni" for the MD1000 chassis to function
with the MD3000 chassis.
1 on the MD3000 chassis, upgrade the controller to A01 or later software.
2 on the host servers and the MD3000 system, follow these steps (in order) to upgrade
components:
an upgrade of the SAS 5/E driver and firmware. For Windows hosts, use the update package.
For Linux hosts, use the DKMS package.
b upgrade the Modular Disk Storage Manager on each host server. (The latest version is available
from the support.dell.com site.) Refer to the Installation Guide of PowerVault MD3000 for further
information.
c upgrade pilots multichannel on each host server. Paths multiple drivers are provided with the
Modular disk (MD) Storage Manager installation package.
On Windows hosts, the drivers are installed automatically when you install MD Storage Manager
in Full mode or host. On Linux hosts, you must install Multipath drivers manually.
NOTICE: If you are prompted, restart the host servers during the upgrade process.
3 once all components have been upgraded, to stop one or more hosts, then shut down the MD3000
attachment.
4 attach the MD1000 expansion on the MD3000 chassis, following the steps in the
Dell PowerVault Compatibility Matrix (available from support.dell.com site). »Is there documentation that explains how to perform updates to the firmware on the MD3000 and the MD1000? Thank you.
Doug
The minimum to connect to a MD3000 is A03 and A04 later and came out for about 3 years now, so if you bought your speaker this year, it came with A04 already and the MD1000 itself should not need upgrades (drives in the MD1000 is another story, but you can not determine their firmware until you connect it to the MD3000).

MD1000 and Perc 5/e, senior players then 2 TB?
I have a MD1000 on a perc 5/e controller.
The vehicle currently has 5 - 2 TB SATA disks and I want to expand.
Should a TB drive 3 or 4? I see that option on a storage site but Dell itself sells no larger then 2 TB. I was unable to find out if the perc 5/e can handle a drive of this size.
Kind regards
PERC5 and PERC6 series will not be able to use disks longer 2048 GB. They can make the virtual disks in this size, but they cannot simply use physical disks of this size.
Only the H300/700/800 and above are supported on the physical disks over 2 TB.

What is the maximum flow of PERC 5/E + MD1000? Confused in the calculations.
Hello, I have read many articles on PERC 5/E and after the last section of the Dell Web site, I'm totally confused. I don't have much experience with these things.
http://www.Dell.com/downloads/global/power/ps3q07-20070368-Olivarez-OE.PDF
My question is: if I Garland 3 x MD1000 and hang it in a port, which is the maximum flow? How can I type 1 Gbps? Is maximum 300MBps by port (wide port?) or PERC 5/E? How would I go over this?
(the link provided in the upper part) "The PERC 5 is connected to the server through a x 8 slot PCI Express nominal of 2 Gbps (although some systems can use a x 4 PCI Express slot, rated at 1 Gbit/s). The PERC 5 has two wide ports of SAS to connect the controller to expanders. Each wide port is a combination of four ports SAS estimated at 300 MB/s each, providing a flow of 1 200 MB/s per total Expander or 2 400 MB/sec. »
I understand more channels, but what exactly do mean by "four SAS ports?
They mean that each physical port is somehow 4-port SAS? So there x 4 double SAS? Then, each port has a flow rate of 1.2GBps? I understand it correctly?
Please someone explain simply. Thanks in advance!
Hello
ZippoWindproofMy question is: if I Garland 3 x MD1000 and hang it in a port, which is the maximum flow? How can I type 1 Gbps? Is maximum 300MBps by port (wide port?) or PERC 5/E? How would I go over this?It would be 1.2 GB/s. 5th PERC has two connectors for two different channels. Each of these connectors consists of 4x300MB/s ports, so each channel is capable of 1.2 GB/s. It's theoretical. Will not actually be able to reach this number as there is overhead to consider. The document States 80% is about the max possible, so that you to put approximately 960 MB/s.
ZippoWindproofI understand more channels, but what exactly do mean by "four SAS ports? This is the logical ports. This connector is used to a channel. The channel consists of 4 logical ports.
ZippoWindproofThey mean that each physical port is somehow 4-port SAS? So there x 4 double SAS? Then, each port has a flow rate of 1.2GBps? I understand it correctly?Yes, that is essentially what it means.
Thank you

New drive shows as foreign on MD1000
We have a MD1000 Perc6/e and 2 virtual disks consisting of RAID 5 750 GB drives (SATA). One of the drives has failed and I bought another to replace it. I think that I bought (a provider of Dell) is actually refurbished because he presents himself as a foreigner. When I try to get it back, it creates just as a separate virtual disk. I want to set up as a spare drive so that it will replace the defective drive, but I can't figure out how to do this. Can anyone help?
Hello jmawle,
If you want to assign the replacement as a global hot spare disk drive then you will need to connect to the PERC card bios. Once in the bios, go to PD Mgmt. Once in physical disk management must select the disk and choose make Global HS. This should create the new disk as a hot spare.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

PowerVault MD3000 to swap MD1000 controller card possible?
Hi all
We have a few MD3000s end of LIFE that we want to reuse for other purposes. Is it possible to simply replace the MD3000 with ones MD1000 controller card and assign a MD1000 essentially? The reason why we must do, it is because we can buy the slower red Western Digital disks that will work for our needs and with the MD3000 we are locked into buying Dell brand readers. I understand that we need a perc 5 or 6 card as well.
Thanks for the help
Sorry for the delay, the JT517 is the most recent part number. These are the same just part the JT517 is a more recent reference number and it was used to replace HN240.

Table MD1000 move to another server
Hello
I have an MD1000 attached to a PowerEdge R610 with a Perc 6/E past an area meets Windows Server 2008 R2.
I need to move the MD1000 to a PowerVault NX with a Perc 5/E running a domain joined Windows Server2003 UDS.
The MD1000 intend to share files with NTFS permissions.
Is it as simple as just turning off the servers and attach the MD1000 to the 'new '? The files will retain the NTFS permissions?
Thank you
Hello FamousRuler,
I would like to replace the battery of the Perc card first before moving the MD. You should be able to move the MD & card & should be able to get your MD online but are not recommended when you have a raid battery has failed. The problem is that the configuration is stored on the Perc card & readers, so you should be able to move & get any backup but have encountered issues when have a battery failing Raid causing table appears after setting in motion.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

MD1000 attached to MD3000. Virtual disk not on the preferred path
Hello
I have a MD3000i box connected to 2 boxes of MD1000, these are connected to a Dell Power Vault Storage server 2003 running.
Last night I connected the 2nd MD1000 and added in 25 TB of drives worth. I had initially hurt mapping the new virtual disk after 20 minutes or so, I noticed that I had shot the Ethernet cable plugged into the Module Raid 0 by mistake. I plugged it back in and was able to map the drive and started the initialization of disks.
I came this morning to check how everything is done and found an error on the table. Disk not on favorite virtual path, preferred owner: at location 0 RAID Controller Module. Current owner: Module to slot 1 RAID controller. Group MD1000_2 of disc. Ramdisk: Virtual4.
Now, it seems that influence the new virtual disk that I created. I checked the path virtual disk property and all the other virtual disks are using path 1 and try that I created to use channel 0.
The virtual disk seems to be working for the moment it is detectable and to initialize itself in the area of operations of MDSM. I'm under pressure to get the space of storage as soon as possible, so I can't really afford to have to blow the virtual disk and restart the initialization. I'm hoping a simple reboot of the storage array will cure the problem, but I guess I can't do so until the end of the initialization of the disks. I could also remap the path to the virtual disk, but I saw online that it does not solve the problem, and I always have to wait until the initialization is complete.
Any help would be appreciated.
Hello
I deleted the disk group and created a new one that even once, did not help even after that I tried to change the path. I deleted again and created a new and then changed to RAID 1 controller quickly while he was still on the controller 0 (before it came with the failure of the path) as the preferred path that has cleared the error. There must be a mistake with the controller or the wiring to it.
Thank you

PE T620 (Rackmount) vs Dell MD1000
Hello
a support or perhaps only recommended PowerEdge to connect a Md1000 to a Dell PE T620 (Rackmount)?
Maybe: LSI MegaRAID SAS 928 x series with 2 SFF-8088 external connectors for neighter H800 Dell or Dell H810 Controller is listed as compatible with MD1000 (PERC external storage support matrix)
I think a PERC 5/E should work as well in a T620 (Rackmount) but could also be supported by Dell.
comments are welcome.
Kind regards.
Torsten
The T620 is a newer server you might encounter a few driver problems make him communicate with the MD1000. You are right it is considered not supported and it is because this configuration has never been tested.
