RAID 5 or RAID 10 for VDI?

Hello

I am currently in a dispute with my boss on which RAID should I use for the new servers ESX accommodation our VDI.

He said that we should stick with RAID 5 coz the DELL engineers suggest RAID 10 is not good for VDI.

But im stressing that we should go with RAID 10, since it offers better performance.

Our servers have 8 x 10 k SAS 300 GB.

Each server will host max 45 Windows XP VM with 20 GB of space.

Any suggestions?

I agree with the suggestions that have already been posted.  In our tests, our related clones are 80/20 in favor of writing so RAID 10 looks good for this.   Also, keep in mind what Andre said that traffic from replica would read.

  • RAID 0 for a RAID configuration not "this computer's hardware may not supported booting from this drive.

I want to install a new HARD drive in a tower of the mine to a friend. It was initially created as a RAID 0 configuration with two 160 GB HDD. The replacement is a single 1 TB of HARD drive. I get the message "this computer's hardware may not supported booting to this disk.» Am I missing an approach from a RAID 0 for a RAID configuration, no?

    Hi RegularPencils,

I suggest that you check in the basic input/output system (BIOS), if you find an option to disable the RAID. If you find, disable the RAID and try to install Windows vista, check if it helps.

Important: Change (CMOS) BIOS/complementary metal oxide semiconductor settings can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from starting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the configuration of the BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Changes to settings are at your own risk.

  • RAID 1 or RAID 10 for Production, I'm stuck

    Hello

    Here's the situation.

In the production server, we have RAID-1 for the ESXi, and for the storage of the actual VMS I am debating between RAID-1 or RAID-10.

I have Six WD Eneterprise drives of 1 TB - 7200 RPM, I'll be puttin on 8-10vms on this all VMs are running standard Windows 2008 R2 64-bit running SQL on each of them (not heavy at all) each vm will have 3-5user.

I want performance, but I really want is the security of the data. What happens if my RAID-10 bad crashes, disk recovery is going to be hard on a RAID-10 compared to RAID-1 crash. I can do an easier than a RAID 10 RAID-1 recovery.

My VMs are 127 GB a piece (vms total 8)

I was going to put 4 - VMs on each RAID-1 array

    Matrix RAID-1 #1: 4 - vms (127 GB)

    Matrix RAID-1 #2: 4 - vms (127 GB)

    Matrix RAID-1 #3: data misc

    or a RAID array-10 and all 8 - VMs?

What is your vision on what everyone, RAID-1 have more security on data incase the raid is dismandeled or bitrot, etc... or RAID-10?

Who will be the best choice for production with safety first and 2nd Performance.

    Thank you

    Welcome to the community.

In some cases RAID10 is more reliable then RAID1... But yes... is more complicated.

If you need reliable max the best RAID6 is but also the worst (in general) on I/O of Scripture.

  • Dell PE 2850 Raid config for ESXi4

We have a few spare Dell PE 2850 and will be installing ESXi 4. I was wondering what would be the best config. RAID 1 for the 2 first discs and then raid 5 for the rest of the raid just 5 all the way together.

    Thank you

Out of these two options, it is greatly preferable to use one large set.

However, performance will be better with a RAID-10 set.  Anyway, the controller must have a pile of work on the PERC.

Please give points for any helpful answer.

The H200 is compatible with the C2100. It has capabilities no RAID for SAS/SATA drives. It's the only option I know.

I'm trying to find what options to license our University has for VDI student use.   With 2000 students we would really here the year 2000 VDA licenses.  Are there other options out there?

  • VCenter dedicated for VDI

Always recommended for some vCenters dedicated for VDI?  Have a client who did a major update to their environment vSphere.  The Service Bureau VDI group vCenters dedicated to run environments around the world.  VMware Eng team is on the fence.  I think its due to some vCenters more in the technical requirements of the vs environment or best practices.  Licensing is not a problem.

It would be a vCenter 5.5 environment.

Wanted to get the thoughts here.

As a general design principle I have separate vCenters for each VDI Desktop Pod.

  • Satellite L30-10 X - need sata\raid drivers for Windows XP

Need to install the drivers sata\raid for windows XP. Laptops Satellite L30-10 X. Please tell me where I can find it.

    Hello

Normally, you find that the SATA drivers in display driver package which you can download from the official website of Toshiba... Usually they are placed under the screen driver\SBDrv but I downloaded it and t SATA driver file is :(

What you can do is download the driver of another model, perhaps Satellite L300D or similar model.

An alternative you can install Windows XP compatible mode. Go into the BIOS, HDD AHCI mode to the compatible. Then, you don't need a driver.

  • Qosmio F50 - 10 K RAID driver for Windows 7 64 bit.

    Please excuse my English.

I'm new to this forum. I have a problem with my laptop. I purchased a Qosmio F50 - 10 K with Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit a year ago and now I want to clean install Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, but there is a problem. It seems that it does not recognize my hard drives. When I need to choose the partition to install on, the list is empty and he needs a driver to recognize the RAID controller I think. The problem is that I did not find anything on the Toshiba site. I updated the BIOS but no results. Help, please. Thank you.

    Hello

It does not recognize your HARD drive because you didn t include SATA drivers!

I think you should take a look on the European driver Toshiba page and must use the pilot of Robson package!

There are drivers for Win 7, so it shouldn't be a problem with the download.

But if that doesn't help try the Intel storage Manger released for Vista 64-bit!

  • Good size of disk RAID 1 for Time Machine

I have a Mac Mini with a Fusion 1 TB drive. What is the recommended size for a backup drive in a RAID 1 using Time Machine configuration?

The general consensus is that player TM (or readers in your case) should be twice the size of Mac disk.

    Take a look on > http://pondini.org/TM/1.html

and then for Intel RAID > http://pondini.org/TM/2.html

I use a mixed bag of backups, relying more on several clones CarbonCopyCloner as Time Machine for two reasons.

    1. If you have no problem with boot drive, you can start a CCC clone and continue working.

    2. it is faster and easier to restore from a clone of the CCC, rather than re - install OS X and then restore data from TM.

  • RAID levels for virtualization (Hyper-V)

    Hello

In a PE2950III and perc 6ir with 8 146 GB HARD drive, can what raid configuration you suggest me to put the virtual hard drive?

    1 * RAID 10 (8hdd)

    2 * RAID 10 (4hdd)

    4 * RAID 1 (2hdd)

    2 * RAID 1 (2hdd)(for OS) + 1 * 10 (4hdd) RAID (for DATA)

    1 * RAID 5 or 6 (8hdd)

The virtual servers have databases, mail servers, and Web servers.

    Thank you.

'Enable the disk write cache '.

'Enable advanced performance (recommended only for disks with a backup power supply. '.

The raid adapter supports two disk cache/advanced performance controls, not the OS off... it interferes with security/performance raid.

As for the other setting, the default values are usually preferable, unless you have a specialized/dedicated server. You can play with WB, WT, reading and I/O policies to do damage.
