RAID and TRIM Config for R720xd and SSD

Hello

I have:

  • Dell Poweredge R720xd
  • 4 x 800 GB Dell Intel brand SSD S3700 DC
  • 8 x 600 GB Dell brand Savvio 10K.6 hard drives 2.5 "
  • Reference Dell PERC H710P Mono Mini

I would like to configure the server with a RAID 5 array to another array of RAID 5 for hard drives and SSDS.

On the SSD, I read that:

  1. The H710P does not pass through TRIM/cancel orders the OS MAPPING
  2. TRIM is not really necessary because the RAID controller has a method to warn the reader that the block is unused
  3. A small percentage of the SSD (~ 5%) should be neglected.  In my view, that it is more provisioning.

(3) above is really necessary when it comes to RAID with SSDS?  If so, how to achieve this?  Make:

allocate some 95% of the available SSD space only when you create the RAID volume?

OR

devote 100% of the available disk space on the RAID volume and then when I create partitions during the OS installation, leave unallocated 5%?

Hello

None of this is important. Questions that concern you have no effect on your configuration.

jfly
  • The H710P does not pass through TRIM/cancel orders the OS MAPPING
  • TRIM is not really necessary because the RAID controller has a method to warn the reader that the block is unused

When you use a controller hardware RAID of the operating system has no control on the blocks. The operating system thinks that they control all blocks are virtual, so any TRIM/UMAP makes the BONE's virtual blocks.

jfly
A small percentage of the SSD (~ 5%) should be neglected.  In my view, that it is more provisioning.

During the introduction of reach a level of training. SSD manufacturers allocate space for it. If you want to make additional supply, some drive manufacturers provide utilities to allow you to manipulate the supply, or you can just have unallocated space on the disk. All unallocated space will automatically be used by the reader, but I don't see a need for this SSD is already provided by the manufacturer.

Thank you

You will need RAM SO-DIMM 204 format pins for your laptop. DDR3-1600 (PC3-12800, also known as) should work a treat.

Your SSD should have an MSATA interface, so depending on what is here right now, you can place in a Plextor M6M disc.

There are a few live hidden on the chassis of R7 - you can take a look here and see how to open it, and then you will know what players and the RAM slots you have available.

    I'll back up a bit.

Breakpoint URLS are defined as follows in the services - config.xml:

    https://{server.name}:{server.port}/{context.root}/messagebroker/amfsecure

The meaning of each of the tokens is clearer when we see them as part of a complete url. If your context root is set to http://localhost , then I have no idea how your application runs in any environment.

If you leave the server.name and server.port chips in your configuration file, then they will be replaced when executing according to the location from which your application is served. However, the context.root token is replaced at the time of the compilation based on the value that you specify in Flex Builder or when calling mxmlc.

In order to reuse your file services - config.xml, you must use the same context-root on your development environment and to your deployment environment.

  • Extreme SSD 120GB - No. TRIM support for Linux later? $150 wasted?

I am a customer of Sandisk's long-term and generally been happy with their products.

My favorite and the only OS is Linux, like the millions of PC users, laptop, Tablet and smartphone world. I'm about to take delivery of a brand new Sandisk Extreme SSD 120 GB. This is my 2nd SSD (the other being of Kingston). I just found this review online (newegg.com) about current support for Sandisk Extreme SSD TRIM for Linux:

"Cannot support a topping on LINUX. I also use EXT4 throw tag in/etc/fstab and it does not work. I sent Sandisk. They said: "I understand that you were not able to activate the TRIM on your SSD 120 GB extreme linux system command. We are sorry for the inconvenience this problem may have caused. »

Then I remember seeing this in own of Sandisk SSD info online:

"Any operating system can be installed on an SSD. There is NO compatibility problem with regard to the operating system. Windows, Mac, Linux, Unix any version or BACK can be installed on an SSD.
Certain features such as the PLATE only are supported in mode native on the latest operating systems such as Windows 7 and Mac OS 10.6 and higher. »

I'm worried. First of all, I have always use the latest version of Linux, continually updated to day and make all the necessary preparations for the maximum performance of SSD (including changes to operating and fstab AHCI). Then my other SSD worked flawless since (installed 6 months ago) news including the TRIM under Linux.

Then I read elsewhere that Sandisk provides no SSD firmware still updates (?). Is this correct?

If so, then Houston, we have a (major) problem. Product not suitable to use? Misrepresentation of product? Inadequate technical support? Incomplete engineering front of dumping on the market?

I might be worrying unduly. Heck, I really hope someone can help me, clarity and TRIM unlimited direct. Can I use my new Sandisk Extreme SSD as my other player, without product development stressful of Sandisk. (Before I drop the fanboys Win7 and Mac, Linux is also valid in the real world like any OS corporate-drone. Heck one day you too could see the light...)

Good news all around. Extreme SSD arrived and installed without a hitch. Also received a number of useful answers E-mail of Support technical Sandisk (thanks, notably, spear, who approached the plate). In short, if you have a recent Linux kernel installed, opt for the filesystem ext4 on both / and / Home. But first of all to be absolutely sure that you have selected the AHCI option in the section of the BIOS of your motherboard SATA mode. (Flashing the latest mainboard BIOS should also help.) So to allow TOPPING Linux offers edit you your file/etc/fstab to include the "noatime" instructions and "throw" in the lines making reference to / and / Home. Save and you should be good to go. So to answer my own original doubts - TRIM is supported for latest Linux OS provided that you follow the installation process. I lose $150? Probably not, but only time and toggle NAND will tell!

  • AW17 R2, support Raid and Tweeking OC.

    Hi guys

So, I had my R2 17 for about 1 month now, and I really miss support raid. because according to me, it's kind of waste that I have 4 x Crucial MX200 500 GB SSDs 2280 m2, in the laptop and I can't use them in raid.

None of you don't know if it will come a bios update on this? and the option in the bios for OCing?

A little *, dell has removed the option RAID and many other useful tips for this line Echo. When other computers laptops Alienware came with open bios.

    Thanks in advance

    Norway.

    Hello

Unfortunately. We have not received any news on an update of the Bios that make this possible. Maybe it's an option that we will be able to add in the future for the Bios, but as of now nothing has been confirmed.

  • DS3300 Design - RAID and logical drive configuration

    Hello

I'm setting up a dual controller DS3300 with VMWare ESX 3.5 hosts x 2 connection using the iSCSI Software initiator.  I have a question about setting up the optimal training.  What I read I should set up several logical drives, and then assign each player owner of another favorite controller logic.  I have 12 300 GB drives, so I thought I would create a RAID5 11 with 1 spare drive Bay.  I would create logical units of 4 x size equal and each of the 4 controllers will then assign that traffic is spread in the controllers for optimal performance.

A1 and B2 to go to a different physical switch (vlan) and B1, A2 go to another.  Each ESX Server has 2 vswitches each with a single network adapter with each going to a different physical switch.

Can anyone tell if the RAID and the design logical drive is the best way to go for a flow optimal iSCSI?  I'm not asking about this type of raid to use - I don't need a raid 1/0 or a mixture of performance - I'm afraid only for best performance of iSCSI for RAID5.  Can I create several RAID5 arrays and logical drives or simply several logical drives?

    Thank you

    Ian

If you have 2 controllers in your storage space then the best config (with 12 disks) must be set up 2 bays of R5 - each of them has its owner controller.

Included logical readers will have the same owner under the parent array controller. Logical readers could be about 300-500 GB on the size. A big R5 isn't the best practice because of the likelihood of the failure of the double disc (for example during the time of reconstruction). A spare part is a must here.

On Esx site I would keep everything simple - 2 network cards, a vmkernel iscsi port. More complexity you will get no more flow (with storage).

Just for notice - DS3000 series gives quite more random ios on R10 in comparison to the R5.

  • Dell PowerEdge 2900 RAID and drive down

I have a Dell PowerEdge 2900 server. The primary transmission table has three drives and RAID 5. The system came this way, and it has been humming for quite a long time. Recently, one of the disks has deteriorated and the light on the drive flashes green and light amber. The light amber, I figured, it means that there is a problem with the drive and must be replaced. Then, I found a replacement on Amazon.com drive and installed (the drive is hot, but my cold started to be sure). I installed the drive, but keeps flashing green and amber light.

I didn't know that I shouldn't have to replace the drive in this way, so I will now try to figure out what to do next. I hoped to reallocate the foreign disk so that I can use it, but my server always shows the reader, not having even if the new replacement drive is in the slot, now.

    I'm running PERC 5 / I integrated utility of Configuration Bios 1.04 - 019 a

I started the server and you press CTRL-R. I've highlighted the controller and press the F2 key, what is operations. When the operations window opens, there are three menu items:

    Create new VD
    Zero Config reset
    Foreign config

The only thing that I am allowed to do in this menu is to reset the configuration. I can't move my cursor upwards or downwards for one of the other choice of two menu.

Scroll when the virtual disk and he discovers, it still shows the first two discs and a lack.

When I press CTRL + N to display the next screen, I see a player listed as failed.

How can I rebuild my RAID with this new drive? If I can't do it, what is the best way to remove the RAID and start over? If I delete the RAID and do it again (and if my replacement drive is indeed well), how can I make sure that my server not to see it, not having so that I can start using it?

Alternating flashing green/orange means that the disc is in a status of predictive failure. What OS is running system? If you hotswap drive next failure they may possibly other issues table because the drive was online and participating in the table with errors on the disk. The adequate alternative method is to use our software Openmanage Server Administrator to run a consistency check on the table and then the drive offline. Once this has been done you can then swap the drive. It seems that in your case, that the new drive had bad data copied on it and it made a predictive failure as well. We want to do is run our hard drive diagnostics and test drives in the system.

  • How to re - combine a HD and SSD in a player of "Fusion".

    Hi all

Well, this process has floored me know how much time lost, he created and how the problem occurred in the first place.

I am wanting to do a clean install of El Capitan on iMac late 2014 retina with El Capitan with a 1 TB drive merger 10.11.6.

Boot from an external hard drive with OS X utility disk 10.11.4, wouldn't let me simple deletion of the reader. He came up with the error message "removing logical volume of the logical volume group cannot delete the storage base logical volume...". »

So I started to investigate this problem and found:

Who publishes various other forum known as the best solution to the problem. Knowing that I hate to use the terminal, I dove in full anyway. I was reformatting disks on Mac for 20 years without needing terminals?

I got so far as to remove the existing with logical group:

    sudo diskutil cs deleteLVG

and now the HD and SSD drives appear on the desktop as a empty volumes (which is fine, I don't need to save anything).

But now, try to use the:

sudo diskutil mergePartitions HFS+ "Apple_HFS Macintosh HD" (and different combinations of drive locations)

results only in "the data partitions are not of the same disc.

This is what I see with the "diskutil list; ECHO; Cs diskutil list "command in terminal.

Also, how can quickly and safely erase a disc from Fusion in the future? I need to deploy a new image of master with all our software top one another 10 times, and I want to completely erase the readers for clean installs (with Migration Assistant for about 8 years, moving from a system has resulted in a lot of weird and wacky behaviour on our Macs) and it is time for a clean install for each of them.

Again, I'd be very happy any help on this.

    -Alex

Please read this message before doing anything. If you don't feel confident that you can follow the instructions, ask someone more experienced to help you.

This procedure applies only to an iMac or a Mac mini with a drive installed in the smelter.

You must read these instructions while no web browser is running, so either print them or load them onto another device before you start.

    1. all the data on the internal disks will be deleted, including Boot Camp data, which are not saved by Time Machine. You need at least two complete and independent backups. A backup is not enough to be sure. There are ways to back up a computer that is not fully functional. Ask if you need advice.

    2. you will need to start one recovery system other than the one on the internal hard drive (if he has one.) There are several ways to do so.

    a. If you have a backup time of the Machine (not a network backup), or a compatible Mac OS X installation on an external drive, then you should be able to start it by holding down press option key to start ringing. Select the external hard drive in the row of icons that is displayed. I mean by "compatible", an installation running on the machine. A version of Mac OS X that is older than the machine is not compatible.

    b. If you used Recovery Disk Wizard (or can use it now) to prepare a system recovery on a USB flash drive, you can start that by pressing the C button on the ring. No icons will appear. Startup will be much slower than usual.

    c. start the Internet recovery mode by pressing the key combination command-option-R to start ringing. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe. Select a language, if you are prompted.

Note: You need an Ethernet or Wi - Fi connection to Internet to use the features of recovery network. It will not work with modems USB or PPPoE, proxy servers or networks that require a certificate for authentication.

    3. disconnect all other external storage devices.

What happens then depends on what version of recovery that you are running.

☞ If the machine came with OS X 10.10 ("Yosemite"), 10.9 ("Swat") or 10.8 ("Mountain Lion"), and you're in the recovery of the Internet, please take step 4a and skip step 4 b.

☞ otherwise, go to step 4 and go to step 4B.

If you are unsure which version of Mac OS X, the machine came with, search for it on this page.

After taking these steps apply, you must have a reader of empty Fusion named 'Macintosh HD' on which you can perform a 7 step or step 7B.

    4. repair of the Fusion drive (see "Troubleshooting" on the linked page.) Quit disk utility and go to step 7A or 7B step. Skip steps 4, 5 and 6.

    4. in the OS X screen utility, select get online help. Safari will launch. While in recovery, you will have no access to your Favorites, but you won't need them. Load this web page.

    5. triple - click anywhere in the line below to select this option:

    N=Macintosh\ HD; for d in /dev/disk?; do o=`diskutil info $d`; for D in SSD HDD; do eval [[ ! \"\$$D\" ]] && grep -lqw "APPLE $D" <<< "$o" && eval $D=$d; done; [[ "$SSD" && "$HDD" ]] && break; done; diskutil cs create "$N" $SSD $HDD && diskutil cs createLV "$N" jhfs+ "$N" 100%

It is a very long line, and you won't see it on the web page. Be sure to select the entire line, not just the part that you can see.

Copy the selected text in the Clipboard by pressing Control-C key combination.

Quit Safari. You go back to the OS X Utilities screen.

    6. in the menu bar, select

    Utilities ▹ Terminal

Launch the Terminal application. Paste in the Terminal window by pressing the command-V key combination. Wait for a new line ending with a number sign (#) to appear. If nothing happens, press the return key.

Quit the Terminal must be returned to the main screen.

    7. If you have a Time Machine backup, connect the device to backup and restore your data. If you have saved to a network like a time Capsule device, it must be connected automatically.

7B. If you do not have a Time Machine backup, or if you can not restore from Time Machine backup that you do not have, install OS x Restore data later in The Migration Wizard.

In the Internet recovery mode, you install the original version of Mac OS X comes with the machine. If you have upgraded the operating system on the App Store, you will need to do it again.

I need to upgrade my Mac (white unibody MacBook mid-2010) with a SSD (and iMac mid-2010) and the RAM and SSD: I look to buy upgrades site Crucial and OWC site and there is a little difference, in terms of money: it's better to buy the Crucial site or OWC site.

MacBook, OS X El Capitan (10.11.4)

    < re-titled by host >

They have good tools to find compatible parts for your Mac models.  The OWC took is here

    http://eShop.MacSales.com/MyOWC/

OWC tends to have the most detailed information on the Mac.  If I look to the top of the part to OWC and review specifications.  OWC offers often information based on the Mac-specific tests.  If Crucial offer something similar for a substantially lower price, buy it from Crucial.  I'm sure they have a refund is not political, if a part they say is compatible.  I bought the RAM and SSD both Crucial and OWC.  From my experience, be it high quality.

For the 2010 iMac, OWC also offers a "kit" (with the tools and support) to replace the hard drive of 3.5 inches with a 2.5-inch SSD.  Eventually, if it's a 27-inch iMac, I think that you can Add the SSD instead of replace the hard drive.  And they have self-produced how-to videos on the process, related to many of their lists of products.  OWC provides a lot of information with added value and service for Mac users.

OWC also offers kits to replace the optical drive on some Macs (including MacBooks) with an SSD (as a secondary internal drive).

  • Satellite R630-155 - fan is too loud and SSD update

I am the owner of a Toshiba Satellite R630-155 (Core i5-480). My problems are:

    1. the fan is too loud and never stops. In normal operation (navigation and General Office work) there is a constant high pitch noise which is audible three to four meters in a desktop - high load environment, you just can't take it anymore! The fan never stops... even when you do nothing...

    2. the heat is a big problem. The bottom of the laptop is overheated constantly and I have to place on my desk so that the lower left corner is outside the table, so it can breathe fresh air from below - otherwise, the temperature rises and the (noisy) fan is unable to follow. When I work with the laptop sitting on a couch, I place a thick book between the laptop and my legs. The book must be thick (more than one inch) with hard covers, otherwise the heat going through the book!

    3. last (but not least, I will mention the biggest problems here) that's the problem with the installation of the SSD. I bought a used Corsair F80 (80 GB SSD) from a friend, but I was unable to use it with the Toshiba - BIOS not detect the disc. I tried to install all the latest updates for portable and SSDS but I had no success. Then I put the disc and I bought a brand new Zalman 128 GB SSD (SSD0128N1 Sandforce) but I had exactly the same problem. I contacted my local support Toshiba and after much conversation, the only answer I got is that the laptop is not compatible with these SSDS, and it is acceptable by Toshiba and not their problem. They told me that if I need an SSD upgrade I cannot go for the Toshiba SSD that is installed on the portege series, which is sold by Toshiba for a ridiculously expensive price - about $500 for 128 GB. I contacted the European support center and I got the same exact answer. I searched the Internet and found someone else with exactly the same problem with a Corsair 128 GB SSD - he concluded that the laptop detects the SSD after ten to twenty resets. I tried and it was true - after a lot of restarts the detected disk Zalman laptop and I was able to successfully install Windows 7, but the process is unacceptable. Also the drive is rated by the sites official at the speed of an OCZ Vertex 2 128 GB (and a little better), but when I ran a cue point in the Toshiba, the results I got were less than half of the advertised speed. Same reference in another machine of the same disc, resulted in the announced speeds.

Shame for Toshiba...-beautiful design and portability, but all the rest is a big flaw. Their support in non-existent and they do not appreciate their customers. According to me, they stole my money and I will never buy a Toshiba laptop again.

Sorry for the big message, but I need, I warn potential customers. Can anyone help me with any of these problems? You also have the same problems?

    To follow...

    Hey Buddy,

With regard to the issue of fan and the heat: you did it BIOS update? A friend told Satellite R630 too and he told me that the fan with the new BIOS version 2.10 activity is reduced. In addition, the laptop is colder than before so I recommend to install this update. You can download the update of the BIOS here:
    http://EU.computers.Toshiba-Europe.com > support & downloads > download drivers

But before you start the update of the BIOS, you should consider the following tips:
-Run update as an administrator only
-Unzip all files from zip archive before launching the update file
-Close all running programs as the antivirus and firewall
-Make sure the battery is fully charged

With regard to the SSD it s still a little complicated to install 3rd party products and no one can guarantee that these parts would not work. You're always on the side safely with original spare parts from Toshiba.

All you can do is to install the new firmware for SSDS and hope that it works, but who knows maybe the BIOS update will help you also in this case ;)

I have a Toshiba Satellite C55-A-1NU and I want to know if it is possible to replace the optical drive with an SSD? Can someone tell me what I need to do? What type of rack and SSD should I buy. Thank you

I also want to improve the ram memory, the laptop has only 1 slot 4 GB ddr3 1600 mhz, but is single channel. Which model should I buy to work in dual channel I use cpu-z to identify the model and it shows me hmt451s6mfr8a do I need exactly this or I can put another ty of manufacturing 2.

This upgrade with SSD is not supported by Toshiba, so everything you do is at your risk. Check this forum please. If I m remembering although some people have already posted own experiences.
I think that in most cases they ordered this caddy HDD/SSD but the drive was not recognized at all.

In my opinion, you must perform these updates.

    RAM
Up to 16 GB of RAM according to specification for laptop, you can put on level and on the lower part under the cover of memory, you should find two memory locations. How to change RAM is described in s. manuals check please page 72.

The memory modules are compatible RAM for your laptop model:
    4 GB DDR3L-1600-PA5104U-1M4G

  • NB305 and SSD

I recently bought a NB305 for professional use (need for portability and battery life)

I have a question about. I would like to install a 128 GB Kingston SSDNow V-Series Disc both improve performance and independence.

My questions are, will this work SSD made?

It will give me a decent increase in performance? (the SSD in my office are wonderful)

It will improve the battery life?

The reason why I ask what should otherwise be easy to answer the questions, is that specific data for the HDD and SSD cards are as follows:

Hitachi HTS545025B9A300 (5K 500. (B) icurrently in my laptop drive:
    Power plug: writing/power 1.4W
    0.5W low idle power
    875 Mbps (109.38MBps)

    Kingston SSD now V Series SNV125-S2 / 128GB 2.5 ":"

    Sleep: 0.7W (TYP)
    Sequential speed *.
    ~ 1600Mbps (200 Mbit/s). read; 160 MB/sec writing.

Now look at that the SSD is much faster, but seems to come at a cost: she uses more than 3 times the power!

Can it be good? (and same idle is higher!)

The numbers in a row are the Web sites of respective manufacturers / PDF files so you would think that they would be fairly accurate.

Of course, the SSD almost twice as fast - but "apparently" uses more than three times the power!

I look forward to any thoughts.

    See you soon,.
    Rick

    > My questions are, will this work SSD made?
Why not? SSDS are no different from hard drives, I think you will need a SATA SSD since the NB300 series supports a SATA HDD controller

    > It will give me a decent increase in performance?
Well, access to data should be faster and therefore you should see better performance but to be honest, the NB300 is a notebook where these small performance increases would not really important

    > Improve the battery life?
Hmm perhaps but if yes then an improvement is not really noticeable since the disk HARD is not the main part which wastes the energy of the battery

  • HP Pavilion x 360 13-u009na: HP Pavilion x 360 13-u009na RAM and SSD upgrade

Is - this model allows the upgrade to 8 GB RAM and SSD adding to existing Sata HDD? If possible please give instructions on how to do it and what model/version RAM and SSD would fit in. Thank you

    Hello

You can find the manual here: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05147552

For the SSD: Any disk 2.5-inch should work for you.

For RAM: the laptop has a single location, if you want to find an 8GB stick (DDR4 2133 GHz) SODIMM.

    Thank you

  • Portege R500 and SSD update

    I have a Portege R500-S5006V with a 64 GB SSD installed.
Currently I have space issues, but always so happy with this nice computer I don't want to replace it.

Is it possible to upgrade to an SSD more? What kind of readers are compatible?
I need to send to Toshiba, or a regular computer repair shop can do this for me?

I think that the SSD in this machine is not a standard 2.5 "SATA or IDE Drive, it is 1.8" and has a ZIF connector and runs as an IDE device.

Do a google search for "IDE ZIF SSD" and you will find a few commands which can be compatible. In theory, they should work in the R500, but I'm not 100% sure.

An FSL can install for you for a fee.

  • Satellite L50 - A - version of BIOS and SSD

    Hello world!

I have a question to put to you.

I would buy an SSD (250 GB) and replace the original HARD drive that gives me a lot of problems in terms of percentage usage and if it slows down the laptop.

In the Internet I found a lot of questions on my laptop (Satellite L50 series - L50-A-1CU) and SSD, particularly for the version of BIOS that could not properly recognize the SSD.

Does anyone has installed an SSD on this laptop? What version of BIOS is necessary for correct installation? I have the BIOS version 1.90.

    Thank you very much

    Enrico

Can you please tell us what SSD you want to buy? I mean the manufacturer and the model.
