  At the top right of my keyboard (Portege R500) theres a button that shows a place in the foreground with a Sun in the background.

  I guess it is a kind of glare/brightness button to be used outdoors.
  However pressing this does nothing.

  Can anyone suggest what's this button and how do I make it work?

  I think you're talking about the outdoor switch.

  This backlight button on / off turns on and off the display backlight s.

  Are you sure that you do not notice any difference this button?

  If you turn off the back light outside in good weather, you can use the computer for an extended period.

  Maybe I m wrong, but usually he should be able to configure this button in the power OS Options.

  Both CTRL keys do not work on my Portege (Vista Biz) 500.

  I guess this isn't a hardware problem. Because that both keys are not recognized even though I hardly use the CTRL button on the right.

  I think that your keyboard is faulty.
  Connect an external USB keyboard and check if both CTRL would work.
  If both work correctly using the external keyboard, then your internal keyboard should be replaced to solve this problem.

  I have recently boght a Toshiba Portege R100 without any installation CD Windows XP Home Edition worked fine but the touchpad is not.

  I installed additional drivers of Toshiba. Now, I'm able to adapt to all kinds of things about the Touchpad, but still it does not work. I was also running Knoppix 5.2 since July 2007. Same problem with Linux.

  You connected an external USB mouse and you have the same problem?

  Normally the touchpad should work without a driver, they are part of the operating system.
  You can disable/enable it with FN + F9.
  I'm not sure, but you can also enable/disable the touchpad in the BIOS.

  I went back to the place where I bought, and I asked the guy (yet) "are you sure that my laptop takes in charge the backlit? ... He said yes, and in fact he removed the keyboard and showed me 2 connectors (one to attack the keyboard and fix the lighting cable)

  Then. My computer supports portable backlit keyboard... But it's not working!
  I tried to reinstall the package added value, Flash card... Chipset... almost anything!
  But it still does not (it should work when I click Fn + Z)

  What can I do now?

  I can't return the keyboard, because the guy said "sry its now use!

  What to say either the technician has done something wrong or the laptop is not extensible.

  As far as I know the keyboard lighting is controlled by the BIOS.
  In my case, I can disable and enable it in the BIOS.

  I don't know if your BIOS contain this option, but you could check it
  Please note that each model of mobile phone is supported and some BIOS each BIOS is different.

  In my opinion if the BIOS does not support this feature you so would not be able to activate the lighting, even if the keyboard has been installed.

  If your laptop is preinstalled with Toshiba recovery image I don't see a reason why the FN keys should not work.

  Is there something more, that you should tell us about preinstalled operating system?

  I put t see serious reasons why the XP operating system shouldn't t work on the Portege R500.
  AFAIK that Toshiba XP drivers are out on European Toshiba driver page and everything should work after the installation of all the XP drivers and tools of Toshiba.

  The right installation order is very important. Please see the installation instruction txt file placed on the page to get the correct order.

  By the way; the instillation of XP will not void the warranty ;)

• FN + F5 to change device display does not work on Portege R600

  Portege R600-11 b Win 7 ultimate
  I wanted to show my photos on the TV using the vga output. Connected everyting, pressed FN + F5 and watch LCD dialog box. Support again, still lcd. tried the keys of direction, no joy, still lcd.

  plugged my trusty R100 instead of the R600 and bingo, works very well

  I'm sure this used to work on the R600 90%. (Actually, what I remember is that it just worked first time with no keyboard at all operations).

  Someone suggest anything happy?

  It seems that your TV is not recognized correctly.
  Did you use FN + F5 option in the past?
  Are you using the original pre-installed OS that you got with your laptop Portege?

• dv2500 .backlighting (dv2840se) does not work.

  I am NOT at all informed, PC... But that's my problem: I can vaguely see the login page. I can fill my password, click on and then see the icons appear in the left margin. But I can't read them all because the lighting is too low. Pressing the key backlight doesn't do absolutely nothing. Is it possible that I can avoid CHARGES from $299.00 I was quoted. ? Being retired and on fixed income doesn't make any easier.

  Sounds like the LCD backlighting is indeed there.  Check your warranty to see if HP can replace them for you.  The guarantee can be verified here:

  In the meantime if you have an external monitor you can use it as a workaround for now plug it into the laptop and pressing fn + f4 for a current keyboard layout.

  Or if it is out of warranty, you can try to order a replacement LCD screen and pay out of pocket for this and replace it yourself.  You can find the service manual for your model on the HP site and then use the schemas provided in it as a plan for the replacement process.
