Re: Function keys issue in Toshiba M50DA103 with Linux

Hi all

I bought this Toshiba M50DA103 to eventually eliminate the pre-installed Windows 8 and install my flavor of Linux on it instead. However, there is a problem annoying with the function keys, a problem that appeared after I installed Ubuntu Linux. The function keys appear to all foires (the key which is supposed to increase the brightness suspends the computer instead, and so on.)

First of all, I thought that this could be a problem with Ubuntu only, but then I tried to boot Fedora, and the problem is always the same. That being said, it could be a matter of core, or a problem of hardware compatibility.

Could you please give me some ideas on what I can do to fix it? In fact, I have discussed this matter with the Ubuntu forums guys, but could not reach a solution.

Please help, if possible.

Thank you.

Hello

I tried to understand the situation of the hotkey and belive it works like this:

The kernel has a certain driver, toshiba_acpi, who handles the events from the keyboard shortcut key.
The driver is for a reason any confused about the layout of shortcut keys.
I think that most of the distros uses the same driver for the kernel, so it won't do much good to exchange for another.

You mention the unit suspended when it is supposed to reduce the brightness.
This is how was the plu layout of Toshiba - FN + F3 = standby, hibernation = FN + F4.

So what is happening is that the driver react the "old way".

I reached out to the maintainer of the pilot to ask questions about how it works.
Don't expect miracles or even any improvement at all.
But if we are lucky, we can find the roommate of changes.

Sierra running on all machines. Until the update, I would use on iMac 2014 screen sharing to access a Mac Mini 2011. Everything worked very well. However, after update, function keys no longer work through screen sharing. I confirmed the screen sharing is the problem, as functions correctly with Mini bluetooth keyboard, and also logging since MacBook Air gives the same problem from the iMac. It wasn't a problem during execution of El Capitan or even when I used Sierra Beta on iMac.

  • Toshiba overheating with Linux

    Dear Toshiba

leaving all to AMD/ATI site is shameful for your buyers using linux. It is not linux job to try to make a driver out of their proprietary drivers.

They have already ERASED all the legacy links page for installation of catalyst 13.1, which, at best, would force the user of ubuntu linux to return the path of the core 3.8 back to 2.6... but not even that it is possible. They think that its so old, they erase all PAGES of DIRECTIONS!

I just bought this satellite with AMD Mobility Radeon 3100 rs780 LAST a YEAR and I expect you to take care of your linux - this card users fried the laptop overheating and after owning 3 toshiba satellite, I then won't buy your product because of the lack of support and only sell WINDOWS based laptops.

Don't care when installing AMD/ATI, which does not support linux, you drive your customers away?
Do you care that these offers of manufacturer of component you chose, not allowing support for linux, drive your customers away?

Do you can not select a manufacturer of the graphics card that supports linux only for a few minutes before shooting their 404 error pages?

The world hates Windows systems now, don't you know that?
Mr. Gates is corrupt and thief. Maybe he wants to ruin Toshiba sales.

    >... and I expect you to take care of your linux users
Respect for your opinion, but there are a few facts and in my opinion, it will not change in the future. As you probably know Toshiba doesn't support Linux and doesn t offer any substance for Linux if you can't wait for something like that.

Laptop Toshiba computers are delivered with operating systems Windows and some models without operating system, but they are completely Windows supported.

  • S50-B-15N issues satellite keyboard/Trackpad / function key - win 10 improvement

I bought a Satellite S50-B-15N a few months ago, who came with Windows 8.1 and decided to do the upgrade of Windows 10 about two months ago. Initially, the laptop worked well but in recent weeks, he had various issues with the keyboard, trackpad, and function keys.

Keyboard: Sometimes the laptop starts up and the keyboard detects no input. A few reboots solves the problem. If I hold the BACKSPACE key to delete several characters as a single character is deleted on one-click Rollback, I can't keep him down quickly delete several words.

Trackpad: The same for the keyboard sometimes at startup it works everything simply. I have to use the keyboard to access devices Manager where I must get back the driver trackpad for her to start working again at the next reboot.

Function keys: All the keys of the row from the top on the laptop (brightness, volume, stock selection, etc.) do not work. I am able to hold the "FN" key and select an F key, like F5, but other keys are completely insensitive.

I tried reading the forums for solutions and I went to the page of the driver of Toshiba and installed all the drivers for Windows 10 for my laptop, so far, nothing has worked. Is that what I can do to make the laptop works properly with Windows 10?

I have a similar problem. I had the same Toshiba model and bought in August. Not sure when the new driver will be released. If anyone has an idea how to solve this problem?

  • Satellite P50 - Hotkeys / - function keys - Toshiba System Settings/keyboard

    I just received a P50 A 144 Satellite with Windows 8.1.

The keypad has typical F keys with Specialfunctions (mute, Volume, WiFi,...). After unpacking and booting the laptop all the function keys (F1 to F12) worked. After you have installed last as drivers Hard - and Software on the Toshiba Site the function keys no longer work. Only the Volume up and down function still works, while pressing the FN key (normally, this works without pressing the FN key).

I checked Toshiba's system settings and the keyboard settings haven't changed. They are always on 'Specialfunctions' (so I don't normally have to press the FN key). Relocation of several drivers and the installation of the 'Value added package' (Windows 7) has not helped. I don't know what to do and hope you can help me. The functions are practical and it would be boring, if they no longer work.

Please excuse my English. I come from Germany and do not write in English, very often.
    Thank you

    > After installing the most recent drivers for Hard - and Software on the Site of Toshiba, the function keys no longer work.
For stone, that I do not understand why you installed anything, if your laptop comes with preinstalled OS 8.1 version and everything worked properly. Don't change anything if there is no reason for this.

My advice to you is: create a media recovery and after having made this original version of the OS install again. You can do this by using the created disc or HARD drive recovery option.

    Hello

To be honest I do not understand why you want to disable FN keys. For me, it is quite handy and makes use of the laptop more comfortable. In all cases solution given by Akuma is good and easy for you.

BIOS has nothing to with it, but to enter the BIOS settings on this notebook Tecra press the ESC key at startup to the top.

  • With persistence locks function keys!

    Hello

I would like with persistence of lock function to my laptop E531 keys.

I know that you can switch between the multimedia and function keys by setting FnLock (Fn + ESC), but unfortunately, this setting is volatile: whenever I restart the system (even from the power saving mode), it is lost and the default keys to new multimedia.

Using this laptop only for "real work", with the software, which extensively uses the function keys, it becomes really angry...

Is there a persistent way lock the function keys to generate the F1... F12 keycodes?

If I ever need the multimedia functions, I will happily hold the Fn key before...

    Operating system is Windows 8.1.

    Thanks for any help,

The latest driver Intel HD (from Intel) is originally this issue. Uninstall and reinstall the driver provided by Lenovo.

  • HP - 15-ac152ur: function keys and sleep mode issues

Hello, I jusy bought a computer laptop 15-ac152ur and I have the following isuues:

-Function keys does not work correctly. By pressing Fn + a F (F9 for example) on "key" works as if I just pressed the F key. For the failure, by pressing Fn + F5, while in the results of google chrome in web page update, but pressing on alone F5 does nothing, so I can't adjust brightnrss or the volume using the function keys, which is very worrying, because it seems that I have no way to adjust the brightness without them.

-Another problem is that after book of sleep mode is not "wake up", it gives me just a black screen and the only thing I can do is to reset.

I have windows 7 x 64 operating system and I have already installed driver chipset and drivers for both integrated and AMD graphics cards. The only thing I do not installed is updating the BIOS, can it be the problem? And what I can do to solve these problems?

    Thank you in advance.

Solved the problem with mode 'sleep'. It appeared that it was a bad idea to update the drivers for the graphics card web site AMD Amd, I should have installed only the driver located on the hp support site.

    How can I fix this?

I use the SHIFT + F7 work much and would really appreciate help in getting up and running.

    Thank you

Check if you have an F LOCK key in the top right of your keyboard.

If this is not the case, try a system restore:

    Restore point:

    http://www.howtogeek.com/HOWTO/Windows-Vista/using-Windows-Vista-system-restore/

Do Safe Mode system restore, if it is impossible to do in Normal Mode.

Try typing F8 at startup and in the list of Boot selections, select Mode safe using ARROW top to go there > and then press ENTER.

Try a restore of the system once, to choose a Restore Point prior to your problem...

Click Start > programs > Accessories > system tools > system restore > choose another time > next > etc.

    See you soon.

  • step by step guide to disable function keys F1 etc Windows 7 ultimate so that I can work with the FTW Transcriber to transcribe software. Thank you

I want to disable the function keys of windows 7 because I want to work with hotkeys TRANSCRIBER, FTW software. You can guide me please. Thank you very much for your quick response.

    Hi Kripananda,

What is the brand and model of the computer?

The function keys are controlled by the manufacturer of the system. The changes must be made in the BIOS (Basic Input Output System). I suggest you to contact the manufacturer of the system to better support.

Note: changes to the BIOS/complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from starting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the configuration of the BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Changes to settings are at your own risk.

  • Shortcuts with single letter keys can produce unexpected results. Why no function keys?

Sometimes I start typing a reply, or by entering a key word to search without having to pay a lot of attention when the window focus is. If it's on the messaged pane, a few keystrokes can correspond to a single letter shortcuts, mess up the Inbox without noticing this immediately (for example a message archiving). It's very embarrassing.

Why allow shortcuts without function keys?

Because old-time pre - GUI users love shortcuts keyboard. They are effective.

Watch the keyconfig extension if you want to disable or change the keyboard shortcuts.

  • Function with dual function keys

I'm playing various online games downloaded, and the problem that I keep running into is that my function keys have two functions, and 'main functions' are not those I want to (for example, to adjust the brightness of the screen, etc.).  I need the original functions that relate to the programs I use, and it is very inconvenient to have to press the Fn key several times to get to work.  Worst of all is the F2 key, which stops my wifi, disconnect the games and force me to go back to the login screen.
