Re: Max RAM in Tecra R840-16J

Hello

just a silly question: what is the maximum RAM I can install in a R840-16J.
I now have 2 x 4 GB but I wish I could have more...

Thank you
Paulo

You can't have more. Maximum is 8 GB.
You can use 2 x PA3918U-1M4G.

  • Tecra R840-16J - FN keys no function

    Hello

I have a problem with my Tecra R840-16J. Sometimes, I use the FN keys (the most I use is F6 and F7 for brightness) sometimes I can't! They are disabled singles! And if I press on the window of "windows Mobility Center" ECO button will be displayed and the brightness will be there if the F6/F7 keys are still active and will not be there if the keys are not active more!

This laptop is driving me crazy! I have Toshiba laptops from the end of 1997 (Ant) working again... with win98 a MX30 which is perfect despite almost 8 years of use intensive Ant sub zero temperatures (I do astrophotography...) but this one which I thought it would be a professional is a great diapointment... !

    Thanks for any help,
    Paulo

    Hello Paulo

I put t really know what the problem is here and why do you have this problem, but without cleaning preinstalled OS (factory settings) something like that shouldn't happen.

What you can try is to remove preinstalled Toshiba value added package, restart the system and install the latest version of the Toshiba download page - http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp

  • Upgrade SSD for a Tecra R840-16J

    Hello world

This is my first post here!
I am Portuguese and I bought a R840-16J two months ago. I chose this model because it had all the specs I wanted (I run Toshiba laptops since 1997... and my first still works!) except one: he had not an SSD. Given that I could not custom make my laptop that I bought it with a 500 GB HDD at 7200 RPM,.
The upgrade only I could do (and I did) was to install an extra 4 GB RAM module.

I would like to install an SSD now (with the same capacity,...).

    My questions:

    1. don't recommend me a special brand/model?
2 - What are the steps that I need to have a correct installation?
    3. I installed a lot of sw that I need (office, PS and many astronomy specific sw I use). Do I have to re - install all these or is it a solution to 'clone' my HARD drive SSD?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated :-).

    Kind regards
    Paulo

    > 1-do you recommend me a special brand/model?

I would not recommend a specific model or manufacturer, I think that it s always a question of value for money. I recommend you get some reading and assessment tests some SSD drive test on tech Web sites.
You can choose the best SSD drive for you I mean it didn't need to be the best and expensive

    > 2 - what steps I have to do a correct installation?

It is the same procedure as the HARD drive upgrade.
Check this nice HowTo from Toshiba:
Tecra R840 & Satellite R840 HARD drive replacement procedure
    http://APS2.toshiba-tro.de/KB0/CRU19037K0000R01.htm

    > 3 - I installed a lot of sw that I need (office, PS and many astronomy specific sw I use). Do I have to re - install all these or is it a solution to 'clone' my HARD drive SSD?

You can install everything again on new SSD drive or you will create an image:
You can use an option included in Windows 7:
Click Start at the start and then select back up your files.
Then click on create a system image hyperlink.
Now you can choose where you want to save the image. You can choose an external HARD disk, burn it on several DVD s, or store it on a network location.
When you want to restore the image, you will be able to use the System Recovery Options to recover the system. For a recovery of the system option, you must start the Win 7 F8 press should choose fix my computer. You will find in this window option called: system image recovery

  • Tecra R840-16J - Driver 8 3 Windows

    Hello
    I use Windows 8 Enterprise in a Tecra R840.
I have not had any problems with the installation. All but three devices installed correctly.
I list below those that have not been installed:
    -BT
    -3G Modem
    -Fingerprint sensor

BT and fingerprint sensor were installed with Windows 7 drivers, and work very well.
The 3G modem is installed correctly, but the connection is detected as a LAN no dial-up connection. So I can't connect, and he repeats to me plug in a cable.

Is there anyone who has had the same problem?
This laptop will be supported for Windows 8?

    Thanks in advance

    Hello

I think you have to wait to win 8 drivers.
I put t see another option for you yet

  • Tecra R840 - 16J SATA III is capable of?

    Hello

Just to ask questions about SATA compatibility! My R840-16J SATA III is capable of?

    Thank you
    Paulo

    Hello

SATA-III was introduced in Sandy Bridge chipset (Intel with the 2nd generation 6 series I have Core CPU).
The laptop seems to be equipped with the Mobile Chipset Intel QM67.
These chipset supports SATA 6 Gbit/s for 2 Ports and 3 Gbps to 4 Ports.

But the SATA controller is also compatible to the bottom so that you could use disk SATA III SSD or HDD in SATA II controller too.

  • Tecra R840-16J - reboot with the fan at full power and no activity

    Hello

Everyone has found this behavior too?

After reboot (this happened a few times... with the drive hard and today with the ssd if it's not their fault) the windows or toshiba screen is displayed only a black screen, no disk activity, and the fan works like crazy! I have it stop after 1-2 minutes because nothing is happening!

    See you soon,.
    Paulo

In my opinion, this can happen without any reason.
Have you done all that can be responsible for this? Update the BIOS maybe?

  • Tecra R840 - energy SSD after closing

    Hello

Could someone tell me what than a ssd power consumption when the computer is turned off?

I have a laptop Toshiba Tecra R840-16J (bougth 6 months ago) with a sweet Plextor M5Pro 512 GB ssd intalled. Yestarday, after a charge of 100%, I liquidated the laptop and today (after 4 pm) I turn it on! The battery was at 93%. Is this normal? What could be the cause of this decline of 7%?
I use a bluetooth mouse but I thing that when I stop the laptop everything must be switched off!

    Kind regards
    Paulo

    Hello

Some options such as wake on LAN or wake on keyboard drain on the battery even if the laptop is turned OFF.
To avoid this, you need to turn off these options in the BIOS.

Note: Don't forget save changes when settings have been changed.

  • Tecra R840 - which partitions can I delete?

    Hello

I installed a Plextor M5P 512 GB ssd in my Tecra R840-16J! I'm very happy with it :-)
Restore laptop to factory state using the recovery DVDs I created before! Now, I have 2 copies and a 16 GB USBFlash with an extra copy! So I can restore to factory State whenever I want!

But I would like to delete the allocated partitions to this!
In my SSD, I have 3 partitions made after recovery (please to image): http://imageshack.us/a/img827/4873/34012663.jpg

    Who then can I remove?

    Thank you very much
    Paulo

First (1.4 GB) partition is created automatically by Windows 7 and there are some files used by Win 7 in case you need fix the system or set system time back at the beginning.
The second partition C is common system partition containing the Win 7 OS.
The last partition is the recovery partition that contains the files to recover.
Recovery files are required to create a recovery disk. In addition the recovery partition allows to recover the laptop without the use of the recovery disk (HARD disk recovery option)

I do not recommend to remove or change any partition UNTIL you not create the recovery disk.
Create the recovery disk and then you could change the partitions of HARD drive theoretically you can delete the last partition of HARD drive recovery if you have already created the recovery disc.

  • Tecra R840 - need help for installing the SSD

    Hello

Sorry, again, but I really need help with that?
My new ssd (arriving in a few days) is a Plextor M5P which is 7 mm thick! My Tecra R840-16J have a thickness 9.5 mm HDD and what I've seen is no caddy!
I would be grateful all the tricks for installing the ssd drive in my Tecra!

    Thanks for your time,

    Hello Paulo

As far as I know that some models are available with drive HARD and some with SSD these models with SSD have small SSD support. SSD is fixed by 4 screws in this medium.

I put t really know how to help you now. Maybe you should contact the nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help. I think they can check the part number of this door - or maybe order one for you.

  • Tecra R840 - atikmpag.sys causes bluescreen

    Hello

displaying videos on my Tecra R840 sometimes I get a blue screen with the atikmpag.sys driver.

Happens to every time, but often - about one in four times or more.

The blue screen occurs especially at the beginning of the video - but sometimes also in the end.

In the download for my Tecra area, there is only one pilot display of 2012 - I have installed.

I have Windows 7 64 bit, 8 GB of RAM and the AMD Radeon HD 6450 M.

Does anyone have a tip for me?

Thank you very much in advance

    Anne

    Hello

Because this problem does not always, but sometimes, it would be very difficult to reproduce this BSOD and therefore, it is not very easy to say why the BSOD appears.

Is that file atikmpag.sys belongs to the graphics card driver.
It seems that the graphics card driver crashes, and therefore the BSOD occurs.
    But why?

    I have two different theories:
    (1) the graphics driver is not fully compatible with the new software installed, tools (games), etc., but the fact is that the Toshiba driver page does not provide all new GPU drivers for this model of laptop. The other point is that the same driver version worked correctly in the past and I m wondering why the same driver should not operate correctly now if it worked correctly in the past.

    (2) my 2nd theory is that the BSOD appears due to the higher temperature of the internal GPU. The highest temperature is mainly a reason for blockages of the system and also responsible for issues of the graphics card.

Have you tried to reinstall/recover the system? Isn't it?
I would recommend you do this using the Toshiba recovery disc. This procedure should always be made in the event of system problems.

I also recommend you to clean the modules of cooling using a jet of compressed air. That would help you get rid of the dust. Dust is mainly a reason if it comes to a temperature higher inside the laptop.

  • TECRA R840-16V to win7 64-bit to win10 level

During the upgrade procedure is complete all seemed ok, but after a while, the system froze (even the mouse). I did a reboot in my system via the power button / stop, the system has worked well for about an hour and froze again. I did a reboot via the Start button / stop, one more time and I had the same problem after all. I did a restore of the system in windows 7 and everything works fine without any gel at all.
Is this a known issue? Is there a solution or suggestion to update my system without problems on windows 10 pro?

    Hello

Never solved this problem, I have the same problem with my Tecra R840. I have windows 10 initial installation when it was first released, however had the freezing issue (System fan would also begin running at 100%, that is very strong but whole machine was locked and would require a hard reset). After a few weeks of this question, that I started Windows 7 and which would be fine.

However, just tonight I thought I would try the anniversary 10 Windows Update to see if that had solved the problem, unfortunately the same problem persists. After you have installed update Windows 10 anniversary (updated to Windows 7), the laptop freezes still. There a simple 3 minutes after connecting the fan turns 100%, and everything froze upwards.

Thoughts/ideas or help here would be appreciated?

    See you soon
