  There is no processor I know who supports version Intel second level Address Translation (SLAT) they call Extended Page Table (EPT) compatible with the 2950. I just searched online to see when Intel introduced the technology, it was introduced with the Nehalem architecture. Our first line of servers supported the Nehalem architecture were 11th generation, there may be some systems of generation 10th revision of second or third that support as well.   As everyone has pointed out, HA provides defective material so really have good VMware ESX 3.5 HA, DRS and VMotion grouped where it gives you the flexibility to migrate VMs live/cold.  If you have already a San and 2 ESX hosts that can be made.  I would recommend that you add more memory to your hosts, because this is where performance counts.  You design with N + 1 in mind, which means at least that your standby hosts can manage all the virtual machines if it must pass dead server.  So, you could buy 1 server more or add more memory to contain virtual machines.

• ESXi 4.0.0 wrong amount of space available to store DATA on DELL 2950

  Well, we brought brand new DELL 2950 server, with following Config Hard / w.

  750 GB x 6 SAS, RAID 10 disks configured.

  Processor Xeon 2 x 2.83

  32 GB OF RAM

  We installed ESXi 4.0 and use the vSphere client for management host, our problem is when we try to add "datastore" it shows still only 45 GB of available space, while storage contoller shows good disc size as 2. 0 t, we tried a new analysis and fresh of the controller and disks, but nothing helped.

  Any suggestions on how we should make our 2. 0 t drive as long as the available space for the DATA store? Please see atacched JPG for problem

• Update hard drive Dell 2950

  I have a Dell 2950 server with perc 5i raid 1. 2 physical drives, 1 virtual drive. I have 6 empty hotslots left.

  Can I install 2 more large drives and configure another virtual drive using raid 1 also. Clone the smallest on the virtual drive virtual drive bigger and then disable the smaller disks and remove, leaving the large disk as upgrading to start on?

  With 6 discs, I don't want to give up half of my storage.  I use RAID5 and exit the storage most of my pins available.  ESX will run smoothly on one of the RAID configs because it does not support RAID, nor she cares.  The difference here is a slight difference in the performance of the R/W between RAID levels.  With a low number of pins, however, this difference will be almost nil and not perceptible to a degree any.  Use RAID5, get most of storage that you can run as many virtual machines.

  In addition, ESX will not recognize size LUNS greater than 2 TB volumes.  Create multiple logical drives in your RAID set to broadcast your I/O as much as possible.  Your VMFS block size will determine how big of a size of disk file or the virtual machine, you can create on this vmfs.  1 MB (default) = 256 GB max, max 2 MB = 512 GB, 4 MB = 1 to 8 MB = 2 TB max.

  OK, I'm testing laboratory a vsan 6.0 cluster.

  I have my running 6.0.0 esx hosts and vcenter server is 6.0.0 also.

  I have the services platform on a virtual machine and vcenter on another. I was able to create a data center, then a cluster below.

  Then I went to try to add a host to my group and I get this error...

  Failed to contact the specified host (hostname\IP). The host may not be available on the network, may have a network configuration problem, or that the management on this host services may not respond.

  I confirmed that my vcenter server and platform services server can see all esx hosts. From the vcenter server, it can ping the host esx and PuTTY can access all of them. I even installed the client and it can connect to all esx hosts. I used the netbios name, IP and FULL domain name and they all work.

  I have only a single subnet, so this isn't a problem. DNS resolution works in all areas of both sides, vcenter esx hosts and host esx to vcenter.

  OK, after working with VMware on this issue, I think that I thought about it.

  All my hosts are DL360 G6 servers.

  My hosts are run the same build «VMware-ESXi-6.0.0-2494585-HP-600.9.2.38-Mar2015.iso» ESX Downloaded from HP.

  All buildings are in trial mode.

  After placing a call to VMware, they had me build some ESX VM, the services of the platform and the vcenter VM on an ESX host. We suspended because it took all day to go upward.

  Spun SQL Server vCenter, service platform, all VM VM VM you need. My AD & DNS VM are on another server, so he has been upwards all the time.

  Add all my Cluster hosts.

  All of this worked!

  Therefore, if you encounter the same problem, I'm plan to generate your with the provided iso file VMware ESX hosts and try it. In my case, the provided HP iso file didn't work properly for me.

  I also downloaded the iso file of HP 2 other times to make sure and do a validation test and it did the same thing.

  I am installing ESXi4 or 5 on a Dell 2950.  I'm not an expert material guy, but I think the controller is a Perc 5 controller hardware / i.  It is a processor of Intel Xeon dual core CPU 2.

  I see only the processors Xeon 5xxx and above seem to be supported, and I honestly don't know if mine it fits or not but when I had installed CentOS and made ' less/proc/cpuinfo', no model number came, just that it was a Xeon processor.

  When I install ESXi on this server (I turned on hardware virtualization in the BIOS), the installation looks ok, but when the computer restarts, it always seems to try to load my old server CentOS so it's as if the installation has not completely replace the drive. Raid Controller had 2 virtual disks so maybe I didn't replace what was a disc of "boot"?  I will try that next.

  Guess I'm looking for confirmation that the CPU is ok and I'm missing nothing else.

  1 in the raid bios remove the raid and create a new one, and then reinstall esxi.

• The local disk on the ESX Server 4.0 workspace

  I have a Dell 2950 GEN III 2 x Quad Core 2 GHz 16 GB Ram, and 6 x 2 TB SATA hard drives and cards 6 network

  I am only able to create a unique database small.  I have 6 drives in a hardware Configuration RAID 5.   How can I use 100% of apx 10 TB of disk space local invited several flavors of Linux and Windows.   I understand that I will probably have several data stores.

• Can we use use DELL R610 / R710 for execution of the ESX host?

  We will purchase a new server to run ESX 3.5 or vSphere.  We have new DELL servers.

  We considered R610 and R710, but we see that there are only 2 PCIe slots.  As one of them be given for an image ADDITIONAL NIC card, there is only one location for HBA.   It is advisable to use a Dual Channel QLogic QLE2462 HBA.

  However, it seems that the Dual Channel HBA will be a single point of failure - if it is connected to 2 different switches FC.  We would love to hear if anyone uses these DELL servers to run the ESX host.

  Good question, I would have preferred two HBA cards. If storage fails everything disappeared. If network failure you will not have access to the outside, but the chances of data corruption is smaller.

  We have confirmed with Dell a few months previously, 6.0.3 required for ESX 4 classic, due out within 30 days of the release of GA of ESX 4 classic.  So I'd wait for 6.0.3 unless it is already available.  Dell said that they expected to be interrupted as soon as GA.

• Update the BIOS of powerage dell 2950 through an ESXi installation

  I'm not sure of the best way to update the bios of a Dell 2950 powerage on which I have a facilities of ESXi 3.5 u2.

  I have two virtual machines running.

  Dell has a "Update Package for Microsoft® Windows®" (PE2900_BIOS_WIN_2.1.0.EXE) which, in my opinion, can update the bios from a windows OS.

  I had to do some research, but I posted instructions on how to upgrade your Dell server running ESXi through records of SUU. Here are the instructions... I do before putting all servers in production, and after the shooting of any old material off the rack before stopping their production, never had a problem.

  Here's my process to update ESXi (dell of course hardware) servers.

  1 Download DVD Dell Software Update Utilitly, its 1.9 GB disc. (if you have a dvd player on your server, you can directly boot from this drive but if you had a CD player in your continuous server, or if you want to store the files of rep on a USB drive below eye).

  2. extract the contents of the iso (winrar), so a lot of my servers arrived with

  just for the readers of CD so I take a USB stick and loading JUST the 'repository '.

  folder from the disk update utility, which is about 1.2 GB of update

  files.

  3. then download the CD version of Dell Software Update Utility, it

  will have all the updates for the DVD and dell does not have up-to-date

  but that's fine, boot from that disk.

  4 start the CD, to the start screen select Update utility, wait 15-20

  I ubantu 14.04.3 Server OS on a DVD disc that is inserted in the R220 Dell server. I am trying to install the OS, but it does nothing when I go through the OS deployment. Server just restarts and crosses the start pages.

  (1) should I RAID to install this OS?

  (2) if so, how to install the RAID controller? It says 'Cannot launch the wizard of Configuration RAID' when I go to set it up.  I have SAS - RAID_Driver_H9W18_WN32_6.802.19.0_A05 on a usb key connected to the server, but I can't understand how to install it.
