I have run tests SRM of stimulus packages on a weekly basis. I also ran a real recovery and failback for additional checks.

I wonder how many times the second type of test must be performed annually, semi-annual etc.

What do you and recommend in terms of test frequency?

A true recovery must be performed for the test when Vcenter/SRM is upgraded or performs sufficient tests?

It's great that you test so frequently. Nice to hear. It really depends on your environment and your needs. When I was a customer and a partner helping customers I find generally that it is once every 6-12 months, if it was really more to keep the company happy, from my point of view, a test of the stimulus package was enough.

A failover/failback would make sense after the upgrade, although it would not necessarily be the entire plan. It could just be done for a subset or test group.

As I said at the beginning, although it really depends on your comfort level and needs of your business.

  • With vSphere 5.5 replication disaster recovery test

I have a few virtual machines in our site of DR using a 24-hour RPO.  We will test by recovering virtual machines remotely, without affecting the production of virtual machines on our local site by selecting the option 'recover with the latest available data.  My question is after the replication can I 'pause' instead of 'stop' the task of replication during this test, so that after our test, I can resume the replication tasks?  This would cause a problem?  I don't want something to happen to the production of virtual machines on the side of the source.

    Hello

Currently Failover Test + Test cleanup function, without having to make a break or stop replication only works in VR, if using MRS. above it.

RV without SRM, after failover, the only possible option is to stop replication. Perform the failover consolidates replica records in the target data warehouses and prepares the virtual machine configuration files.

Yet after the replication is stopped, you can:

-power off the virtual machine on the recovery after done with the test site

-Remove the vCenter site recovery, leaving records in the target VM data stores

-set up replication again and that it points to the existing disks in the warehouses of data target

Although the UI will display 'Initial full sync', really VR calculates checksums and only changed disk blocks are transferred from the protected site.

  • Can we create a Vlan without SRM for disaster recovery testing

We are working on plans for our recovery after disaster in our VMWare environment.  We have a recovery Site which has a NETAPP file server we reproduce our VM data warehouse and SQL data.   We have no RS, but must be able to test if possible disaster recovery with Production upwards.   Is it possible to configure a VLAN and do a test isolated Dr. without SRM?   Thank you

Welcome to the VMware communities forum.

You can create a VLAN without SRM.  You will need to properly set up your network hardware, and then you add new virtual machine port groups to your ESXi hosts.  You can then save the virtual machines by giving them a different name and starts in isolation.  When you attempt to save the virtual machines they will always have a reference for the port VM production group so you'll want to make sure you update you turn on.

The docs RMAN (http://tahiti.oracle.com) should be sufficient.

If you don't care about the details, you can back up the databases with

    RMAN target /

You may need to offer a bit more precise as to what you intend to restore and recovery.

  • error recovery testing

    Hello!

    Docs on SRM 6:

    of the installation guide

If you use replication of vSphere, do not select a placeholder data store that you already use

as the target for replication data store.

    of the Administrator's guide:

The replicavirtual of the machine as vSphere, replication creates and the placeholder virtual machine that

Site Recovery Manager creates the two may reside on the same data store on the recovering site because they are

created in different data store files. When VMS reply and the placeholder is in the same

data store, Site Recovery Manager creates the machine name of virtual space by using the virtual replica

the name of the machine with the suffix (1). Site Recovery Manager applies the mappings of the inventory to the

placeholder virtual machine on the recovering site.

so, I guess the best practice is mentioned in the installation guide

Yes, you can examine the suggestion in the installation as "Best practice" guide Using the same data store for fictional settings and replication target is supported, but may create confusion with several folders that are created for the same VM.

  • Cannot execute edit plan reovery, discovers links and run the recovery test

    Hello world

When I connected to my web client today and you try to add a new server for the protection group, that I was unable to do so, the option is grayed out so I got the error message saying: already connected session.

When I click on manage under my protected site and try to go to one of the tabs link is unable to retrieve the mappings, session already connected. I restarted the services on both servers RS and still unable to start a recovery or change the protection group.

The only thing I have not tried to do is to restart the vCenter for both sites. I disconnected and logged back on and still tells already connected session. Please let know us if there is another way to kill the session.

  • With vSphere test/recovery replication all while keeping the main site online.

Hi guys. niot sure if I'm missing something really obvious.

From what I can understand tha base "recovery process" in vSphere Replication5.1 implies the following workflow

However, our profession demands that we test the ability to recover the VMs selected the site of DR then than DO NOT impact main site.

Is this possible without SRM / table to database replication / replication of VEEAM?

    Our installation program

    VCenter PROD (dedicated VLAN x)

VR PROD device (including VLAN, dedicated)

    PROD-HA and DRS Cluster

    Guest PROD networking (VLAN z)

    DR VCenter (dedicated Vlan X)

VR PROD device (including VLAN, dedicated)

    PROD-HA and DRS Cluster

PROD comments Networking (VLAN, isolated, cannot drive to the main site)

No RS and no possibility to use the replication table according to preverred, no Budget for VEEAM replciation.

MUST BE DONE, while the primary site remains fully alive >

Basic procedure to test recovery to DR and come back if I understand correctly >

    1 tasks replication setup (fact)

2 access to the web in VCENTER DR > Pause/Stop replication on the virtual machines, we want to retrieve.

3 web access in VCENTER DR > retrieve DR virtual machines using 'recover with the latest changes' (Show stop as primary/Source VM needs to go down)

3 assuming that it is a path last step 3, we intend to move guests picked up at DR VLAN, one port groups and reconfigure the Ips using Powershell process mass

4 active Directory and DNS will be changed to Dr. TEST Site to make usable salvaged customers.

test to DR on revovered VMs in DR VLan 5 users, so this should be route back or affect the site of PROD.

6 not recovered VMs to the main site. This required once more primal VMs being to low or EVEN be removed from the inventory!

    Procedure here

    VMware vSphere 5.1

Looks like so there is no way to use vSphere replication to TEST the abilty to toggle, unless you can share the secrets with me.

If you are using vSphere replication without SRM above it, recovery Test is not available. The process, you can follow in case you do not want your main Web site:

    (1) perform a recovery using the second option (retrieve by using the latest available data). In this way you will not have to power off of the VMs source and your main site will be online.

    (2) when the recovery is complete, stop the replications (which will be in a State of recovery)

    (3) power off VMs recovered, unsubscribe them inventory of VC, but keep the files of disk intact.

    (4) manually configure all repetitions using disks that have been left in the form of initial seeds. This will cause the changes to synchronize.

In step 4 of ease, you can use the multi-vm replication configuration wizard vSphere. Just make sure that the data store target each disk that will be used as initial copy is put in the folder with the name of the virtual computer. Then, you could try to configure all virtual machines at once, performing the search of seeds and confirming to use.

  • Another scenario of test - isolate the recovery Site

Question for the gurus out there:

Installation: We have a simple configuration with a single restore site protected and unique. The configuration of the network is stretched VLAN. All the tests to bubble networks works as advertised, and we are very pleased with the solution so far. In addition to virtual infrastructure, there is a certain physical systems that make up the environment, and the goal is to make a complete failure on the test of the site in the coming weeks.

Test case: the proposed solution is to drop the link between sites protected-recovery and turn the entire failover datacenter in a bubble (only accessible through VPN links). Once the test is completed, we would have back then all the changes on the recovering site, so that it protects once more the main site.

Question: Would it be possible to rotate part SRM to the test in 'Test' mode only - that she set up the whole environment attached to the VLAN direct (who are now isolated from production by dropping the link of the site) and once finished, reset the recovery by the normal site (i.e. "Test recovery finished, press on continue clean...") ») ? I don't see why it wouldn't work, unless for some reason, the test procedure requires communication between the sites that the effective recovery process does not.

    Thanks for any comments.

    Hello

Recovery test requires no connection to the protected site as far as I know.

About the networking part of your question, when you change a recovery plan, on the network management screen you have an option to configure the test networks. These networks is used during the trial instead of bubble networks (default).

SRM will be cleaning the virtual environment, but how do you cleaning physical servers?

For how long you plan to run on the recovering site? You have sufficient capacity for snapshots on your storage array?

  • Windows 2008R2 x 64 System Recovery on NEC Express 5800 R120e - 2 M

    Hello

I need to perform a complete system on our UAT server recovery test.

    The current Configurations: NEC EXpress 5800 R120e - 2M

Hard drives: 3 disks (C:, D: and there by car)

I tried yesterday but did not succeed.

    Steps.

I made an image of complete backup of the system on the Y: drive he managed.

Start the system with bootable Windows 2008R2 CD and select the option system to recover.

    Problems:

    1. Windows could not recognize the discs first and then I checked the NEC Express 5800 manual and found that I need to load the RAID drivers when Windows asks you to load drivers. Pilots were load successfully. It is implemented in the server hardware RAID.

Fortunately, Windows detects the current installed the operating system but the problem is that,

Windows detects the C: as H: when installed displayed from the list of operations. I tried then, but Windows could not detect the image backup and eventually abandoned.

I saw that all volumes on disks changed as follows

    C: drive became H:

    D: the drive became N:

    Y: the drive became L:

I am not able to understand this behavior. Grateful if someone can provide some insight/information please to above problem.

I'm stuck at this point and cannot test the full recovery of Windows on UAT system before you try on our environment to Production and DR.

Finally, I started the normal server and I see C, D, and y drives.

    Thank you

  • On the Test computer system state restore

    Hello

We have windows server 8R2 (hostname APWINDOWS8R2519). The server has many applications (Ms office, MCAFEE, Ms Sql Server, Oracle etc.) that are installed in the drive D, drive E and F by car.

We intend to make the recovery test for this server on the TEST computer.

We have a same Measurements (including ip address, host name, memory) as production of the machine machine.

My question is when to apply the System State? If we must first restore all applications of the D, E and F drive on the machine then start applying the system on the machine state

    or

First apply the System State, and then restore all application folders in the drive D, E and F.

    Which is the correct method.

  • Messy recovery removed SRM site. SRM uninstalled protected site. Hosts & VM have errors.

    Hello

We have made some tested with SRM, of which a part has been isolated from the recovery of the site and perform a recovery of VM.

Because it was just a test, when we did we decommissioned the site recovery test environment and uninstalled SRM of the protected site.

Because the recovering site has been deleted messy, we continue to get errors on hosts and virtual machines that they are unable to communicate with the recovering site.

I thought that this would be taken care when SRM has been uninstalled, but appears not to be the case.

For the virtual machine, they display the error:

No connection to the server of VR: do not answer. warning

On the host on which the virtual machine is located, there are follow-up errors.

How to resolve these errors happen? I have to delete the GID State above?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you

    Trent

    Hi Trent,

Is what SRM/VR version? VRM is configured with externel DB or using embedded DB?

Now that the recovering site has been decommissioned, VRM on the site source still think that the virtual machines are configured for replication.

To clean the source VM configuration of replication, you must initialize VRMS with empty DB - it will remove the configuration of the replication of the VM from the source, as these configuration will cease to be present in the BD VRMS. To achieve this:

Option A) power off and remove the old device of VR on the source site and deploy and configure a new.

Option B) If you use VR 5.1 or 5.5 with embedded DB, it may be easier to simply click on the "Reset embedded DB" button in the UI VAMI.

Option C) if VRMS has been configured with external DB, an alternative to redeploy the device would be to stop VRMS service (stop etc/init.d/hms), remove the old base VRMS, create a new and configure VRMS with the new UI VAMI DB.

Once replication configurations have been deleted, you can click on "Cancel registration of vCenter Server" button in UI VAMI VRMS to unregister the extension of the VC and power off and remove the device. There will be leftovers.

The site of recovery - data warehouses have been reformatted, but only VR devices is removed, you may need to clean records replication targets.

    Kind regards

  • SRM Test Layer2

We are preparing for a trial of DR in April and run a couple of tests "minis". We run cx480 EMC with Recoverpoint. We bought SRM and with the Layer2 up works perfectly. But during our test we similate the disaster by 'cut' the Layer2. But when we run a test of our stimulus package, it fails with the error - failed to create snapshots of the replica devices. Failed to create the snapshot of the replica 12044 consistency group. SRA command 'testFailoverStart' failed for the '12044' consistency group. My understanding is that it works with a recovery instead of a test but I am quite nervous about recovery once our scenario is completed. I don't want to back changes made during the trial of return to our Production data center

Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

If your recovery test works, then as long as your LUN is mirrored without error, this error is 'normal', as it tries to replicate before the failover and the rest of your Recovery Plan should continue successfully. If you want to be sure that your virtual machines will rise on recovery Site properly with the data before disconnecting network SAN or cracking, then do a planned first migration.

  • Test failover network

I wonder if there is a way to force a virtual computer to a specific network during a test failover?  I use SRM 4.0.1 with NetApp SRA 1.4.3 and a network of testbubble is created during a failover test.  I created a test network and select this network setting up recovery plan when he ask about the test networks.

    Any thoughts?

Yes, of course, it is possible. The setting is per portgroup / VM, however.

Change your Recovery Plan. On the "Network Test" screen, you can choose on what portgroup virtual machines will be connected during the recovery test. By default it is set to auto mode, which means that the switch internal is created on the ESX hosts.
