    Windows Update error 80246005

    If Windows Update, error 80246005 during updates, it usually means you can't save files to the Catroot2 folder or that the Cryptographic Service is not started or is not working properly. Follow the steps below to correct these problems.

    To allow files to be saved in the Catroot2 folder

    Windows Update may fail if Windows cannot copy files to the Catroot2 folder or replace files that are in that folder (for example, if the folder or its files are set to read-only). To change the folder so you can Θcrire to it, follow these steps:

    1. Click the button start .

    2. In the search box, type command prompt.

    3. In the list of results, right-click Guest, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    4. At the command prompt, Type attrib h s - r c:\windows\system32\catroot2 (where c:\ is the drive where Windows is installed), and then press ENTER.

    5. Then type attrib s - r c:\windows\system32\catroot2\*.* h (where c:\ is the drive where Windows is installed), and then press ENTER.

    6. Type Exit and press ENTER to close the command prompt window.

    To check, and then restart the Cryptographic Service

    1. Open administrative tools by clicking the start , clicking Control Panel, clicking system and Maintenance, and then clicking Administrative Tools.

    2. Double-click Services. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    3. In the Services dialog box, click Windows Update (you might need to scroll down to find it; the entries are in alphabetical order).

    4. Note the selection state (the status appears in the third column). Right-click Windows Update and do one of the following:

      • If Start is available, click Start.

      • If the restart is available, click on restart.

    5. Now click Cryptographic Services (you may need to scroll up to find).

    6. Note the selection state (the status appears in the third column). Click Cryptographic Services and do one of the following:

      • If Start is available, click Start.

      • If the restart is available, click on restart.

    7. Close the Services dialog box.

    After trying either of these procedures, see the Windows Update Web site and try checking for updates again.

    Can I infer that you are using Vista? If your antivirus software does not interfere it guilty in your update course, then see the following coming from my notes available on this site.

  • Win32 5 error code printing through Remote Desktop

    I connect to a system windows server 2008 R2 by using remote desktop.  When I try to print on my local printer (HP laserjet 1200 redirected) nothing happens.  I checked the log of events on the server and there is an entry for my attempt to print indicating that a win32 error code 5 has occurred - access denied.  Access to what?  Any ideas how I can fix this problem.

  • Vista - Error Code: 8007370D (cannot install updates)

    My computer says 'Windows cannot check updates' when I go to update manually, click on the button to update and it says the same thing, then I get the 8007370D error Code - Windows Update encountered an unknown error.  I tried to shoot bad for 2 days now.  Installing a stand-alone package and using a system of updating analysis tool.  When you try to install Service Pack 2, I also get an error indicating that the string is malformed.  How can I fix these errors?

    When I click on the link 947366, it takes me to the 947821 dfownload, but it says in the name of v10, where the first link says v4.  Was this the right link?

    Error message when you use Microsoft Update or Windows Update Web sites to install updates on Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003: 0 x 80070005

    If you are using Vista, then the denied access is handled differently-

    Error code 0 x 80070005 is also described as ACCESS DENIED (you may not to install updates.

    Please check that you are logged into an account with administrative privileges.

    Please follow these instructions if you encounter this error code during checking or install updates via Windows Udpate.  What follows applies only to Windows Vista.

    1. Download AccessChk (Sysinternals).  This tool allows you to assess the level of access of some users or groups of resources, including files, directories, registry keys, global objects and Windows services.  Here is the link to download the tool: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb664922.aspx

    2. save the zip on your desktop and extract the file:
    -Right-click on the file and select extract all...
    -Click Next when prompted for the Destination.

    Therefore, you should see a folder called AccessChk on your desktop.

    3. open the folder AccessChk

    4 press and hold the shift key and right-click in the window.  Select "open here command prompt.

    5. a command prompt window should open a similar message:
    C:\Users\\Desktop\accesschk >

    6. type the following command and press ENTER:
