Relocation of windows.old (Win7)

I have recently reinstalled Win7 on my acer predator 5900 and regretting what to do.

I tried which follows the steps on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971760/en-us but I always get the message "the system cannot find the file specified." and steps 5 and 6 seem not to aply for Win7, so he ends up doing nothing.
Also, it might be interesting to note that my previous installation was in french and the resettled version is English.

See if that helps (Note: the article was created for the restoration of Windows 7 in a preview of Windows 8 but the steps are the same): http://www.pagestart.com/w8pbrecoverw710291101.html

  • Win7 lost files in Windows.old

I recently reinstalled Win7 and made the mistake of using the "Custom" option in the installation. He installed a new windows with a file called "Windows.old".  The problem is that it says that Window.old is "empty", but when I scan the c: drive, I can see all the files which were to be transferred to the file, but when I go to this file to try to save some of these old files and programs, I don't see them. How to see files and save them?

  • I had to install a fresh install of Win7 on a Win7 computer. Old settings are in the Windows.old folder. How can I migrate the old settings for new install?

I tried to 'upgrade' a Win7 installation using a valid Win7 upgrade CD. Because the current version is newer than the CD, it would not be upgraded. I created an installation on the old HDD. All my old programs are still on the HARD drive. I have the Windows.old folder on the HARD disk. I backed up the My Documents folder with all my data. It is now restored. I need to get the old registry settings in the registry again so I did not reinstall all my programs. How can I do this?

Unfortunately, you will need to reinstall all your programs from their original installation discs.

What you should have done was to download a current copy of the edition of Windows 7, you have a license for Service Pack 1 integrated and do an upgrade of the repair.

Unfortunately, it's too late now, since you seem to have done a custom installation.

  • Can I safely delete "Windows.old" after a successful relocation?

I caught a virus and had to reinstall Windows.  The repair disk intalled a new version clean and left in a folder on my hard drive.  I moved all of the things I've wanted on an external drive, so I have nothing of it.  Can I remove it to clear disk space?

    Boost

Windows.Old contains all your old files of program, Windows, and personal spaces (C:\Users\your name\etc).

You can delete it (you need to maybe take possession of this first and reassign your rights to him). But like I said that it contains your old personal folders and office, you still have stuff in there you want.

However, the requirements for the media upgrade is that you have an operating system already eligible such as Windows XP or Vista installed to use it. Since the Windows 7 end user license agreement.

15 UPDATES. To use upgrade software, you must first be licensed for the software that is eligible for the upgrade. After the upgrade, this agreement takes the place of the agreement for the software that you upgraded. After upgrade, you can no longer use the software that you upgraded.

So, if you are always denied, you will just have to reinstall Windows XP or Vista and let it do the verification of eligibility.

  • After the OS from Vista to Windows 7 upgrade, lost bookmarks. Could they be somewhere in "windows.old"?

    Hello

I upgraded my OS from Vista to Windows 7 and lost bookmarks, I had in Firefox. Back up my documents files and they are OK. Unfortunately, I don't think to back up my Firefox bookmarks.html file.

However, I did the upgrade of the operating system from the disk and a "windows.old" folder has been created which seems to have a lot of my old files, applications, and others, but I can't find "bookmarks.html" in the firefox folder or in my user folder.

Is there another place in windows.old where bookmarks could be, or a different file name, it may be under?

Please help, there are a few important bookmarks that I lost and which were accumulated over several years.

    Thank you!

Firefox has not used the file bookmarks.html for storage of bookmark since the release of Firefox 2. You need a JSON bookmark backup file or the file places.sqlite. See this:

    http://support.Mozilla.com/en-us/KB/recovering+important+data+from+an+old+profile

Your old profile is located here in Windows Vista and Win7:

    drive: \Users\Windows login user name\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\profile_name

You may need to display 'files and hidden folders' in Win7 to be able to access the Firefox profile in windows.old files and the new installation of the OS.

As you mention that you created the recovery media and it fails to restore your system with Win7 preload delivered, I would recommend that you contact the Service, let them know that your created set failed to work and ask that they provide you with a set of factory recovery DVDs. The details are below.

Hope that helps you get things sorted.

  • Importer e-mail and addresses from Windows Mail in windows.old to Outlook 2007 in the new Windows 7

Installed Windows 7 on a laptop last night.
Old system: Vista & Windows Mail
    New system: Windows 7 Ultimate (64) & Outlook 2007

Prior to installation, we have saved copies of records of e-mail and address books for the two users on a disk partition.  These same files are also still available in windows.old.

Import in Outlook 2007 feature, I cannot select a directory where the old files/email address. He just made a kind of research and can't find anything.
I wish that prospects to find them and convert a PST file but can't seem to make it work. I tied each combination in the functionality of Outlook 'import' and even tried to drag the old emails in the outlook Inbox (just create a new email with the .eml attachment file)

What should I install Windows mail, that he could recognize the old addresses / and then inport to Outlook?  Maybe then Outlook will look for them in their actual location?

You cannot import data from Windows Mail directly in Outlook. See...

How TO migrate [Windows mail] Outlook (when you have only the message store files)
       http://www.HOWTO-Outlook.com/HOWTO/migratefromoewlm.htm#FILES_ONLY

In your case, you must first download/install Windows LIVE Mail and then import data from Windows Mail in this e-mail client. After that, you can EXPORT data from Windows LIVE Mail to Outlook (compared to import the data into Outlook).

Yes, this is all very confusing. Adding to the confusion:

    1. you must set Windows LIVE Mail as your default for mail in CUSTOM (<>) item Set Program Access and computer by default in Win7 before any function send to or MailTo will become available.

    2. you will find general support for all e-mail Win7 Clients in this forum: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7network/threads

    3. you will find support for Windows Live Mail in this public newsgroup:

Looks like the copy of Windows 7, you were trying to install from Windows XP Home Edition is a 64-bit version.

You will need to boot from the DVD 64 bit Windows 7:

Boot from the Windows 7 DVD

To learn how to change your BIOS options to boot from the DVD drive, the following tutorial:
    http://notebooks.com/2011/05/05/How-to-load-BIOS-and-change-boot-configuration/

    Click Install now
    Accept the license agreement
When the option is displayed to select a type of installation, click (Custom advanced)

Select the disk partition where you want to install Windows 7 click Next.

You will receive the following warning:

The partition you have selected may contain files from a previous Installation of Windows. If so, these files and folders will be moved to a folder named Windows.old. You will be able to access the information in Windows.old, but you will be able to use your previous version of Windows.

(At all costs, do NOT click on anything in Format, deletion or Partition name.) So even do a custom installation, your personal files are still kept. Click OK

The installation program will now begin installation. During installation, your computer will be restarted several times.

Once the installation is complete, you can complete the Out of Box experience as the choice of your laptop, create a username, password, your time zone. You can then proceed to download the latest updates for Windows and reinstall your applications and drivers.

You can then retrieve your personal files from the Windows.old folder and reinstall all of your applications and drivers.
