Win7 lost files in Windows.old
I recently reinstalled Win7 and made the mistake of using the "Custom" option in the installation. He installed a new windows with a file called "Windows.old". The problem is that it says that Window.old is "empty", but when I scan the c: drive, I can see all the files which were to be transferred to the file, but when I go to this file to try to save some of these old files and programs, I don't see them. How to see files and save them?

I installed Win7 on my computer by using 'Custom Installation', as I was advised to do. The data from my old hard drive was stored on drive C under the name of the folder "Windows-old".
I have problems using Windows easy transfer. It does not give me the option to transfer files from a folder on the C drive in places where I can use it for example. Word (I installed Office 2013 Home Premium).
I copied the entire "My Documents" to a flash drive, but cannot transfer data from there either.
I also installed Windows Live Mail. I can receive and send emails, but can not access my old address book/contacts list.Any help/advice would be much appreciated!

I can't delete my Windows.old folder because of file permissions.
I have a h8-1000z HP running Windows 8 Pro (a domestic installation). I recently cloned just my hard drive to a Hitachi 1 TB to a 120 GB Intel SSD Cherryville. Such a small disc, I'm looking to get as much room I can release. My windows.old folder is about 10 GB of space lost at the moment. I tried to adjust the ownership of the folder and the files contained in conjunction with change permissions. My account is an administrator account, but even when I adjust the permissions to allow full access to the admins, I always get the following error message:
File access deniedYou need permission to perform this actionYou need authorization of josh-HP\Administrators to make changes to this file.(josh-HP is the name of my rig).I tried to give permissions to users, administrator, administrators, and all, but nothing seems to work. I even tried to delete the file in safe mode, nothing works. If anyone has any recommendations he could do, my ears are large open.Josh CunninghamStudent and Tech JunkyHello

files and folders in the windows.old folder missing
Recently, I updated my windows 8. (a day and a half)
Today I was moving the content in the folder windows.old to the other locations, (4 ~ 5 h ago)
Suddenly, after the computer has restarted, the content in the windows.old folder disappeared except for users and windows folders.
I copy the files from windows.old/Program files and I don't know that I do not delete the folder by myself.
I read previous posting on similar problems, but that's because they kept their too long files or their disk space was not enough.
But I have enough space in my C drive and just refreshed 1 ~ 2 days ago.
I did not drive or any cleaning that is.
It is unreasonable to a system to remove the backup files after a few days without noticing.
Please let me know how to solve this problem and to recover these files.
There are a lot of files in the previous program files, I need to recover the precious.
Hi Junwhan,
Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft Community.
I can understand the importance of data could be in the Windows.old folder and we regret the inconvenience.
Yes, Windows 8 has a new timer feature which will automatically delete Windows.old files after a period of 4 weeks since the upgrade. The idea is to avoid the waste of space giving you plenty of time to get what you need out of the folder and delete those that sit for months or even years.
Since it's just been 1-2 days of update process, you can activate the "hidden objects" to see if the Windows.old files appear.
As you open the file Explorer, click view and check the hidden items
In addition, if you use third-party antivirus program control the log of activities see if there is any action taken at the time where the files have disappeared. Most of the antivirus program automatically deletes the default files. You can change these settings, however, it is not recommended.
If you use the default, Windows Defender (WD) on Windows 8.1 then WD has real-time analysis allow by default. Refer to this link: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/wiki/protect_defender-protect_start/windows-defender-on-windows-8-introduction-and/f1e00106-6687-4efe-9ec0-ed9f72fabb92
Check the history of Windows Defender:
Type of user interface modern Windows defender.
Click Windows Defender.
Click the history tab, and then click Details.
Check Date and time if you find any virus.
Note: The data files that are infected must be cleaned only by removing the file completely, which means that there is a risk of data loss.
Hope this information is useful. Please feel free to answer in the case where you are facing in the future other problems with Windows.

Restore windows 7 using the windows.old folder after the installation of windows 8?
Hi all
After you have installed windows 8 on a pc comes with windows 7, I learned just learned that I don't have a product key valid win8 because I already used once for an installation of win8 on another pc. Now, I need to go back to win7 because I don't plan on buying another product key.I know that I can do this with the option to restore from the manufacturer, but it will be a hassle to get back to the top/reinstall all my applications and data.Is it possible to go on win7 by using the windows.old folder?Hello
Whether you are planning to install Windows 7 on the computer that has Windows 8, we can only perform a custom installation.
If you are using an OEM computer, see the link:
Understanding downgrade rights
If you do not use an OEM computer, you may need to try the following steps to perform a custom installation when you have lost the applications and settings, however the data stored on the C drive will be saved to the Windows.old folder.
For the steps to detalied on how to spend to try solutions by André from the link:
Note: Make sure that you back up important data before performing a custom installation.
Come back if you have any questions with windows and we will be happy to help.

Windows 8 has been deleted and my windows.old/programfiles?
I was rather annoyed that windows 8, rather than integrate my existing programs and settings, pushed everything including parameters in windows.old/ProgramFiles (what is the point of having a check box that says 'keep existing settings' if it has not yet rendered my inaccessible email until I downloaded windows live mail again?)
However, after hours of violin, I managed to do a combination of programs to re - install and run with difficult settings from the file directory windows.old/program through desktop shortcutsIn recent days the shortcuts no longer works and I see windows 8 has been deleted and my windows.old/programfiles directory! It is not in my trash, it isn't in my forties AVG
Anyone know where it is!I did not understand why windows 8 should go through all my programs from the road, so it would take me hours to do shortcuts... but deleting the entire directory and my settings? Come on, this is ridiculousHELLLLP!AndyHello
