Requirements for vSphere remote site replication

I run 3 Enterprise 5.5 x vSphere hosts in A Site with vCenter.   I want to add a new host in a remote site and configure vSphere replication between them.  Issues related to the:

  • Do I need to vCenter in slot 2?
  • If vCenter Site of A is the Site management and hosts of the Site B and Site A goes down, vSphere replicated VMs can be restarted to Site B without problem?
  • Is there a risk to not have a vCenter dedicated to Site B on the changeover plan?

Thank you

-Matt

Hello

(A) If you have vCenter in slot 2, you will need to deploy device VR and match two VR UI sites.

In the case where something happens to site A, losing vCenter and/or VR device, you can use vCenter and VR device to site B to perform a recovery after disaster and put in place the VMS to site B, inside of vCenter inventory B.

(B) If you have no server vCenter in slot 2:

1. There is no need to deploy handset unit of VR (embedded DB for server VRMS + VR + VRMS) for site B.

2. you can deploy additional device VR-server only for site B, so that the replication traffic goes directly from the source ESXi to the correct server in VR.

3. If the disaster arrives at the site, you must have vCenter Server and VRM in the combined unit of VR upward and running order to use the VR UI to perform a disaster recovery. If vCenter Server or VRMS manage warehouses of data target is corrupted/lost, the only way to recover after a disaster is to consolidate recovery replica logs manually rename and replicated configuration files and hope that consolidated records represent a coherent source VM instance. This procedure is subject, not officially supported, and care must be taken when building the redo logs, in order to ensure the consistency of the data in the disks of the virtual machine, not some partial block updates.

Kind regards

Martin

  • Remote Site Replication

Hello, I am currently using vSphere 5.1 replication and replication of my production SAN EquilLogic on a little SAN Synology on the same subnet on my local network. I have a data store in my vSphere cluster using iSCSI to Synology for local replication of my VM.

My company has another office in Seattle that I would use as my recovery site and settle the Synology SAN, so that I do not have the localized replication happening. I am a little confused everything is...

    1. Should I try to keep the connection iSCSI on my WAN link to our Seattle Office that 10mgps on MPLS for the Synology?
    2. Or do I need to configure another host of vSphere, tie my Synology and attach it as a remote site in vSphere replication?

    Thank you, Eric

you will probably better use another host using VR because over a 10Mbits/s connection, latency will probably cause the iscsi connection Flake at any given time.

  • Best practices for controlling Remote Sites ESX servers

    Hi all

I was wondering what the best practices or the options are for the management of the ESX servers in remote offices or branch.  I know that you can always use the VI to control on the site server, but what happens if you want to use some of the functions of the virtual Center?  How remotely manage and leverage capacity of Virutal Center in remote sites or branch offices, since you can't have Virutal Center installed in a domain.

Other then a VPN dedicated to all remote offices or a branch is there another way to use Virtual Center to remotely manage the ESX servers in remote offices or branch?

What are your current plans DR if the main site is going to host VC?

You can run your VC in a VM and have power clone on a remote site or both incase of total failure.

Then with the help of RCL etc. under the texiwill recommend and/or vMotion VM VC to other sites if necessary.

This would be due to a firewall blocknig this port. If telnet to this port also fails instantly?

Have you configured listener winrm 'l03wpfogfms001 '?  5985 is the default listening port

    Thanks in advance.

Hi Vivari, as a suggestion I would start with RVTools (free utility to extract common vCenter data)...  It allows export to Excel and a good utility to use if you do not know PowerCLI scripting.  Although RVTools is a good util it will collect all the information you're looking for.

You are looking for it in a report, or is it possible to collect from several sources?

It is not an easy way to collect HBA Firmware levels without connecting to the host ESX via SSH.

Use RVTools to data warehouses, networks and ESX patch levels.

If you cannot collect the information you're looking for using RVTools PowerCLI scripts would be the next option.

Script to collect the NIC and HBA Firmware.

  • Remote site 2 Internet connections...

I have a remote office that currently connects to a data center Central via the VPN Site to Site.  I get a 2nd internet connection like a fall back to the remote desktop.  How to configure the Site to Site VPN working properly so that if the main internet connection goes down, the site switches to the secondary?

On internet connections remotely come from different providers so that they have completely different blocks of public IP addresses.

    Central

    ASA 5520 8.0 (4)

    GIG 0/0 public IP

    Remote

    ASA 5520 8.4 (1)

    GIG 0/0 public IP

Public IP address of concert 0/3 (2nd internet)

On the end of HQ you must enter the new IP address of the ISP (for the remote site) as secondary peer.

On the remote end, you must add SLA so that traffic will be redirected on the second link incase of primary failure.

  • Can not pair sites in vSphere 6.1 replication

    Hi all

I am faced with an error during the twinning of sites. Used to work in version 5.5 replication, but after upgrade, I can't pair it sites. DR location was built from scratch, with the same names for esx, vcenter and RV appliance servers. Also on the site main VR device was installed from scratch, only vcenter me lie down to version 6.x (latest)

Now when I wan't to pair a sites that I get this error after the connection is successfully to the server DR CSP:

    and in hms.log:

Network is not a problem, because before upgarde replication worked without any problem, also I filled files hosts with respective titles on each of the sites, then ping with the FULL domain in labor OK.

    Any idea?

    To advance.

    / R.

After adding port 443 excluding firewall the phairin fine.

VMware needs to update the ports requirements in the documentation: VMware KB: numbers of ports that should be opened for vSphere 5.8.x and 6.0 replication

  • The amount of data required for replication?

I have a client with a server 2012R2 as a domain controller configuration. It has SQL express for shipping system. There are 3 full-time and part-time users 2.

They had a Server 2003 with Replay. Replication stored up to my office to the problem. Only the internet expanded wireless or Verizon or Hughesnet.

They use the wireless extended for about 5 years. The upload speed has slowed down to about 40 KB/s on May 7, when they did an upgrade. It's part of the problem.

Replication is about 100 hours of delay at this time.

Verizon has a 10 GB per month maximum. HughesNet has 50 GB a month for $129.00

If I'm fiquring right 40 KB/S = 100GB per month so Appassure sent to the amount of data to use HughesNet.

I do snaps at every 30 min. It is an average of 200 MB. I moved the page file to a volume that save. I turned off a bouquet of services.

I think that I could copy the data into my office with far less bandwidth than that.

"The upload speed has slowed down to about 40 KB/s on May 7, when they made an upgrade."

-So, who did an upgrade? Verizon, Hughesnet or Appassure (from 4 to 5?)

-How will you measure this 40 KB, Speedtest.NET, a field in Appassure?

"They are on an average of 200 MB"

-Where are you number of 200 MB of? The number, 200 MB perhaps before any treatment is done. So you might not really need to transfer some 200 MB through

Do you make backups every 30 minutes throughout the day? Does include weekends? If people do not work on weekends, make sure that you don't do backups on the weekend, which falls a little less than 80 GB per month.

Drop your freq from 30 minutes to 1 hour, which reduces your amount to be transferred in the half.

If people work 04:52, don't make backups 8-5, this significantly reduced backups.

If you set backups to run every hour, from Monday to Friday and 8-5 you would subject under 9 GB per week or 36 by number of months vs Antons 271 GB

You have to replicate this customer?

Even if you get this working, the next time that the client makes Inc. vs FULL, you will be FAR behind. And customers seem to like make full backups.

I don't envy you, you have to solve the problems Appassure did and they don't give you any idea what it is. They will not tell you what changes, how long they are taking every step to prepare backups and replication. Why their yield is 40 KB. They will tell you (as above) to use 3rd party tools to try to measure their performance applications and its basically impossible

She's really looks like Appassure may not be a good fit for this site because of the way they perform backups and your needs. If you can't resolve your needs to work with Appassure, I would look at other products that work well for remote sites and a small number of customers. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me

  • What is the function of the IOS minimum set required for VPN site-to-site software?

    Hi guys,.

I have a Cisco 1841 router to do a VPN site-to site. I would like to know what is the function of the IOS minimum set required for VPN site-to-site software?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Ja,

Advanced security or more should do it. The version of the IOS, you can try later 12.4 T which is c1841-advsecurityk9 - mz.124 - 24.T5.bin, in which case you don't want to go to 15.1 still.

    I hope this helps.

What I want to know is the process to recover a VM replicated to new hardware in the case of the complete failure of the original host and/or data store

    In essence, disaster recovery.

Are there other parts (software), that I need to take the replica VMDK and files related to re - create a new virtual machine on a new host

Yes, because it will be all your hard and .vmx files.
