Resizing partitions on a Satellite U400

Hi all

I would be really grateful if anyone can help with the following text:

I recently bought a Toshiba U400 with a 200 GB hard drive. The hard disk is partitioned with Vista 94.4 gig (C) and gig (D) of data 90.3, I see that only about 3 gig is used on the data partition and want to resize it to about 20 gig and expand the Vista partion. I tried using the Vista disk management tool, but it does not extend the Vista partition.

Thanks in advance for any help

Adam

Hello Adam

Maybe a stupid question, but I would like to know if you created the recovery DVDs before you start to make some changes.

If I like to remember this laptop comes without the recovery DVDs and recovery image is saved on HARD drive.

  • Satellite U400: Installation of XP and change the partitions

    Hello!

First of all, sorry for my English, it is not good, I hope you understand me!

I have a Satellite U400, and I would like to create a partition to install XP and have a dual boot with Vista.

    My first question is:
I have seen that it is possible to download all the drivers xp... but they are the only upgrade, or in the book there is not driver for Xp in default?
I need to install any drivers? And when I install it?
Immediately after the first installation of XP?

The second question is: I tried to resize the Vista partition, but Vista says it's impossible resize as much as I want to, because of file sharing and the snapshot.
Can you help me solve this problem too?

    Thank you for your support!

    Bye!

    As to the question;

(* 1) * first of all, you should check what model number you have. Driver Toshiba page provide XP drivers for 4 different U400 series.
XP drivers that are released in the page are the most recent versions and if you want to use all the features of the laptop all the XP drivers must be installed after the installation of XP operating system.

But before you try to install XP, you must include the SATA driver in XP. The SATA drivers are located in the Intel storage Manger.
Please also check this forum for more information how to include the driver SATA in XP operating system.

(* 2) * I guess you cannot shrink the partition because Vista needs a part on the partition for paging.
It is an OS feature that allows you to use the HDD as RAM temporal.

Please visit this 3rd party for more details:
    http://www.howtogeek.com/HOWTO/Windows-Vista/Understanding-Windows-Vista-paging-file-size/

In your case, I would leave a few more space on the partition to make sure that this feature might work properly.

    Welcome them

  • Satellite U400-22z - how to remove the HARD drive recovery partition

    Hallo,

My satellite u400-22z came with a big "hdd recovery" folder on the drive hard - yes I know what it does.
but the unbearably awful version of windows vista that came with the machine made me decide that, in the event of failure of the system, I'm still will not install this failure of the attempt of an operating system.
So I do not have these data recovery.

So those ~ 11 GB of junk sitting on my drive is bugging me, I can't delete the folder HDDRecovery, it is somehow protected against deletion.

How can I work around that?

Also, is it safe or can I make it safe, to use the small apparently hidden partition (that's recovery also?) I found, which is IIRC ~ 2 GB or larger, for own purposes, without destroying my current installation of windows?

    Thanks in advance,
    Steve

    Hello

If you have a recovery disk and you do not want to store the folder in hard drive hard disk recovery, you can remove it.

    > I can't remove the folder HDDRecovery, it is somehow protected against deletion.

Remove you it as you always do to remove all files on your system.

  • Satellite U400 - how to return to the format of partition with HDD Recovery

    Hello

I bought a new notebook Satellite U400 with Vista Home preinstaled thereon.
I went through the initial configuration and once it was done, I realized that making the partitions of HARD drive does not fit my needs.

So I resised the partition of 'Vista' (acctually I shrunk it) and made the largest partition of 'Data'.
I did not do anything with the hidden partition.

Unfortunately, when I did this procedure I formatted the 'Data' partition.
Now, when I want to make the backup with TOSHIBA Recovery Disc Creator DVD I got the error message saying that it is not possible because I formatted the 'Data' partition.

Is there a suggestion how to fix this error?
The system's fine, the only thing is that I'm not able to save and restore the operating system.

    Thanks Vecerka

It wasn't good buddy. If you deleted the partition of HARD drive recovery, then you would not be able to restore it!

Now, you need a new DVD of recovery!
You can order using this Toshiba page:

  • How to identify / resize partitions on Satellite L300D-06N

    People,

My son has a Satellite L300D-06N and I'm trying to optimize its HD.

In the windows storage management window, it seems that there are 4 partitions on its HD 250 GB (of which two are hidden). There is a C: (216 GB) who seems to be holding. D: (7.7 GB), which seems to be empty. There is also a partition of 1.46 GB non-lettre (hidden?) called "EISA Configuration" and another (?) hidden partition 7,57 GB.

I guess one of them is the so-called recovery partition which holds an original image of the system drive (c :) only?). But what would the other?

    And who is that?

I can also resize partitions C: and D:? I would like to keep the C: folder for the operating system and any program installs and uses the D: drive as its repository of data. But the C: drive currently has 150 GB free space, I want to take about 100 GB and reallocate to D.

If I resize C: and D: this effect the recoverability of restore the C: drive if I ever? And can they just be resized through the management of storage Windows Vista (I'm used to XP and have used Partition Magic on my other XP system, but I understand that it does not work on Vista).

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

As far as I know, there should be only one hidden partition containing Vista backup files. This partition is created automatically by Vista and it s need for some processes of repair if something would be wrong with the operating system.

The other partition must contain the Windows Vista, drivers and other applications.
The next partition must communicate with Toshiba HARD drive recovery files.
This HARD drive recovery could be in the order of the group without the use of recovery disks!

I have used the magic of partitions in Win XP too, but it didn t work in Vista OS.
But I could use the free tool called Gparted. It s a software opens and you can use it for free.

  • Re: Satellite U400: operating system not found then the installation of the OS

I have a toshiba satellite u400 with is come with VISTA.

Because I don't like VISTA, I then installed WINDOWS XP with a multi boot.

Everything worked well. But one day I want to resize my partitions I used Paragon partition manager.
This product is required to operate only to resize my xp partition, so he asks me a start.

    And then nothing works.

I try to fix my problem with a fresh install, but it seems that the boot sector was not correct.
Then I completely format my hard disk on another computer with a USB CABLE.

When I try to install VISTA, XP or LINUX on a CD or DVD, I ask the multiboot with F12
I chose to boot from the CD/DVD built-in, but I get only "OPERATING SYSTEM NOT FOUND',

It's as if the BIOS test the HARD to FIND something specific, and it does not find.
When my PC worked correctly I could boot from the drive to dvd without problem.

I called the SUPPORT CENTER of about 10 days, but I have no answer.

So if someone could help me.

    Thank you.

    Hello

OPERATING SYSTEM NOT FOUND message appears generally if the laptop has attempted to boot from the HARD drive and didn t find the operating system.

But I put t understand why you formatted the HARD drive using the USB cable?

Please insert HARD drive in the Bay of laptops HARD drive and check if the HARD drive is recognized in the BIOS!
If the HARD drive has been recognised so I recommend you to take a disk Win XP Home and at the start of this disc.

As I m not wrong not you will need to first install the SATA drivers to recognize the HARD drive.
The fact is that the laptop supports the SATA controller and SATA drivers are needed to get the HARD drive recognized by Win XP.

Well, after you have booted from the Win XP disc you need to format the new HDD by using the NTFS file format and should then follow with the installation of the OS.

    Check it out

  • Satellite U400 cannot create DVDs of recovery with the recovery disk creator

    Hello

I have a Satellite U400 (a few years), and I never created the recovery DVDs.
Now I want to do, but for some reason, when I run creator of Toshiba Recovery disk, nothing happens...
The partition containing the files of recovery is there, as well as the folder HDDRecovery. I have add a few files on this partition, this could be the problem?

    Thanks for your help.

    > I have some files on this partition, this could be the problem?
N ° if you didn t change the partition structure should not be the problem.

It is: does this Toshiba recovery disc creator market or not? If you can not star this tool has nothing to do with the recovery files.
You will find this file - C:\Program Toshiba Toshiba Recovery Disc Creator\TRORDCLauncher.exe?

  • Re: Can I use the other Satellite U400 series recovery disk

I have Toshiba Satellite U400 121. My recovery disk does not work may be due the scratches that I see in it. I took the laptop to the Toshiba Center service and I got a negative support of them. They said, they can't put the Windows Vista because the recovery disk is not there, and they have put Windows XP inside and handed to me.
later I got to know that Windows Xp is not Geninue one. :|

I can still see one of the Partition 'D:' with folder HDDRecovery inside.

So can I use Recovery Disk of all PC model Toshiba laptop other than the Toshiba Satellite U400 121 recovery disk.

In fact, I tried with the other model recovery disk, that at boot with this disk, Recovery Wizard starts up, but since I'm not sure about this one I stopped there and brought out.

Please one of you let me know if you have valuable contributions on this.

    suggestions are welcome!

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

I don't know Mr. which series Satellite U400-121, it is, but you must use the recovery disc designed specifically for this series of laptop!

Another recovery disc cannot be used because the drivers and tools that have been implemented in the image of Toshiba are not designed for this series of laptop!

By the way; You can order the CD from recovery from here:

  • Satellite U400-144 - Vista cannot return

    Hello everyone

I got this new Toshiba Satellite U400-144 (PSU40E), came with Vista home and worked really well until I decided to install Linux. Everything was going fine until I had my HARD drive partitions, when I deleted my 1.5 GB partition, which is called partition EISA!

I don't know how to get it back, no disc don't came with the laptop and Vista no longer exists and I can't get it back.
Quite simply when I boot I get a message: LACK of OPERATING SYSTEM

Can anyone tell how to get this score again?
Please help and thanks in advance :)

    Hello!

First, the EISA partition do you mean don't contain Vista installation files or let's say the recovery disc. The EISA partition contains files for restore systems and it is a feature of Vista, not Toshiba.
With the recovery disk, you would be able to get the factory settings, this means an installation of Vista with all the drivers and tools of Toshiba.

The only way to return Vista is a Toshiba Recovery disk. Go to a local ASP or you can order one directly from Toshiba.

    Good bye

  • Satellite U400 - recovery disk is maybe corrupted

    Hi all

I have my Satellite U400, I created the recovery DVDs and I used two or three times to restore my system. But now, I've tried but always failed during installation, I think that some of the restore files are corrupted and cannot be coppied to the computer.

So now am stuck without my original operating system.

Can someone tell what I'll do?

    BR

How to recovery DVD files can be corrupted?
What may be the problem is the DVD itself or the HARD disk do some problems.
Check if the surface of the DVD is clean and Unscratched.

You can use F8 for the installation of the OS?
Which is recovery image second partition?

  • Re: Satellite U400 - failed to start the system recovery

I have a Satellite U400-PSU44E and Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit preinstalled and having some problems with my computer, had decided to use the hidden partition on the hard drive to fix the system.
I chose 'Repair your computer' (or something similar to this), but having done, a message tells me that,

"The installed program cannot start. Click OK to turn off the computer. »

I don't know why that is. Can anyone help? It would be greatly appreciated.

The Partition Recovery seems to be defective. You can order the replacement of Toshiba recovery disks. Which country are you?

Another possibility could be that the HARD drive has failed. in this case, you will need to send the system to an ASP for repair.

  • Toshiba Satellite U400-14Z upgrade to a faster processor - which is the most rapid possible?

    Hello.

I want to upgrade an old Toshiba Satellite U400-14Z (http://www.toshiba.eu/discontinued-p...lite-u400-14z/) a little by changing the CPU. Initially there is a processor Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 with FSB to 1066 MHz but I thought to put there P9700 or P9500. It seems that they are similar, specification is exactly, except the speed and the amount of memory cache level 2. The question is: would this work?
I also found CPU called T9900, which is the fastest of the family. However, T-line requires more power than the line P, 25W to 35W in comparison. Is it possible that she would work in this phone?
Maybe there's even some CPU more Rapids that would fit. Y at - it all? I'm looking for the maximum possible speed.
    Thank you for the answers.

I found Intel® Core 2 Extreme Processor QX9300 who might be compatible. It has 4 cores and a thermal power of 45W design, compared to P8400 of TDP 25W. I suspect that the cooling of this laptop is insufficient to be able to disperse the money.

  • Motherboard for Satellite U400-15E work Equium U400-124?

    Hello

My graphics card died on my U400 - 124 & I said that the motherboard must be replaced.
I found one for a Toshiba U400-15 and I was wondering if that will enter my chassis.
It's ok if I have to reformat my hard drive & reinstall windows.

Here's what he said on that I found.

    Motherboard Toshiba U400 - 15th

    Compatible with A000027670 A000060020 31TE1MB01N0

I have attached a picture of my model below.

    Any help is really appreciated

According to the image of the Equium U400-124 belongs to the series of PSU42E

Satellite U400-15E belongs to the PSU44E, but both series are very similar, and I guess that the motherboard could be compatible... the presentation of the motherboard seems even if from my point of view of a few you should be able to install this card.
