Hi Susan Roberts,

1. you did make changes to your operating system before this problem occur?
2. updates of Windows or new hardware/software changes?

Closing general troubleshooting: shutdown problems are usually caused by a program or process that won't come out gracefully. The program or process may be against malware, or may be legitimate (for example a pervasive like Norton or McAfee antivirus).

Method 1:

Start your computer in safe mode and check if the problem persists.

Reference:

Method 2:

If the problem does not happen, I recommend you perform the clean boot.

Put your boot system helps determine if third-party applications or startup items are causing the problem. If so, you need to maybe contact the manufacturer of the program for updates or uninstall and reinstall the program.

Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

This problem may be due to a corrupt or damaged files in the system partition or boot record that are required for Windows 8.1 start successfully. You may need to run the automatic repair of Windows 8.1.

However, I would recommend at this point, contact the manufacturer of the Tablet for the best support possible, since you use dualboot.

  • Vista crashing with various STOP errors

    Hello

I am trying to understand a problem I am having on a machine that is under Vista Home Premium (SP1).  The user gets a blue screen on this machine quite often (sometimes 3 in a week and nothing for a few weeks) and I can't pinpoint the problem.  Today, I received the following error message:

    STOP: 0x0000007f (0x0000000d, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) on the blue screen

I tried to look at the mini dump files and came across various Error Codes/problems.  Here is a list of some things that I found:

    Stop 0x8E: MISALIGNED_IP
    Stop 0x8E: program explorer.exe problem
    Stop: Ox50: problem program dwm.exe
    Stop: 0x1a: problem program firefox.exe & ntkrpanp.exe
    Stop: 0x8E: program wink32k.sys problem
    Stop 0x8E: material IP_Misaligned (USBPORT! USBPort_IsrDpct27e)
    Stop 0 x 50 & 0xD1: program dxgkrnl.sys problem
    Stop 0X1a_41787 & 0xBE - problem program ntkrnlpa.exe

The user does not use any particular program, which is originally a model coherent crash, sometimes it's Firefox, sometimes it's Word, sometimes no programs are running and the screen saver is on.  The system has 4 GB of memory, 256 MB of memory on the graphics card, HDD 250 GB (I can provide additional system needed information).  The most common problem is the MISALIGNED_IP, but as you can see in the list, the problems are everywhere.  Has anyone treat anything like this before?  What additional information can provide that might help?

    Thanks for your help!

    Nick

    Hello Icayrus,

As John suggested above, I recommend the use of the Verifier, % systemroot%\System32\Verifier.exe, in this scenario. The reason being you get the codes consistent downtime, but with sources. If the pilot associate you would be able to use the auditor of code pin-point the driver at fault compared to the "victim" of the accident.

    Using the Driver Verifier Manager

    1. start Verifier.EXE found at %systemroot%\System32\Verifier.exe

    2. Select create a custom settings (for code developers) , and then click Next.

    3. then choose select individual full list settings and click Next.

    4. turn on all the options available ", except" low resources simulation and click Next.

    5. then choose to Select the names of the drivers in the list and click Next.

Note: I generally recommend control "suspicious" driver such as problematic drivers known or recently updated. I would then check all the non-Microsoft drivers and unsigned.

    6. make your selection, and then click Next.

Note: If you have more than one specific physical hard disk drive and click Next.

    7. you must restart the computer for these changes to take effect.

If all goes well you should get a system crash, and I hope that the dump file will give you more insight as to the 'guilty' of the accident from the 'victim '. I'd really aprecciate help, thank you for your time

    Hello

The basic definition of a bugcheck 0 x 116 is:

There may be a bug in the video driver or video material.

So I would now explain what means VIDEO_TDR_ERROR. Firstly, TDR is an acronym for Timeout detection and recovery. Detection time and recovery was introduced in Vista and carried over to Windows 7. Rather than exactly what detection time and recovery did exactly, I'll just quote the MSDN article!

    Timeout detection:

Planner of the GPU, which is part of the DirectX Graphics kernel subsystem (Dxgkrnl.sys), detects that the GPU takes more than the amount of time to perform a particular task. The GPU scheduler then attempts to anticipate on this particular task. Preempt is a timeout 'wait', which is the actual time of TDR. This step is the detection of delay of the process phase. The period of default timeout in Windows Vista and later versions is 2 seconds. If the GPU cannot complete or anticipate the current task period TDR, the diagnostic operating system that the GPU is frozen.
To avoid detection of timeout to occur, hardware vendors should ensure that graphics operations (i.e. buffer DMA completion) will not take more than 2 seconds in scenarios such as productivity and the game to the end user.

    Preparation for recovery:

The operating system GPU Scheduler calls the function DxgkDdiResetFromTimeout of the miniport driver of the display to inform the driver that the operating system detected a timeout. The pilot must then resets and reset the GPU. In addition, the driver must stop access to memory and go not material. The operating system and the driver collect material and other State information that might be useful for post-mortem diagnosis.

    Recovery of funds:

The operating system resets the State appropriate graphics stack. The video memory manager, which is also part of Dxgkrnl.sys, serving all allocations of video memory. The miniport display driver resets the State of the GPU hardware. The graphics stack takes the final steps and restores the receptive office. As mentioned previously, some older DirectX applications could make only in black at the end of this recovery, which requires the user to restart these applications. Well-written 9Ex, DirectX and DirectX 10 and subsequent applications which manage peripheral technology delete continue to function correctly. An application must release and then recreate the Direct3D device and all the objects in the device. For more information on how get the DirectX applications, see the Windows SDK.

    Article here.

That being said, if the detection time and recovery fails to retrieve the display driver, it will then pull the bugcheck 0 x 116. There are many different things that can cause a 0 x 116, which I'll explain below:

The following hardware problems may cause a TDR event:

1 unstable overclock (CPU, GPU, etc.). Return any overclocks to stock settings.

2 bad sector in memory, resulting in corrupted data is communicated between the GPU and system (memory video, otherwise known as VRAM or physical memory, also called RAM).

    GPU tests: Furmark

    RAM test: Memtest86 +.

3 corrupt hard drive or install Windows / OS install resulting in corruption in the registry or the page file.

    HARD drive Diagnostics: http://www.carrona.org/hddiag.html

To reset your swap file, follow these steps:

    (a) go to start... Run... and type "sysdm.cpl" (without the quotes) and press ENTER.

-Then click on the Advanced tab.
    - then the Performance Settings button.
    - then on the tab advanced following.
-and then click the virtual memory button.

    (b) in this window, note the current settings of your swap file (so you can restore them later).

-Then click on the option button "No paging file", and
    - Press the Set"" button. Don't forget, if you have several hard drives, make sure that the paging file is set to 0 on all of them.
-Click OK to exit the dialog boxes.

    (c) restarted (this will remove the file from your system)

((d) then go back following the directions in step one) and re-enter the settings that you noted in step

    (b) follow the steps along the (and including) the reset.

    (e) once you have restarted this second time, go back and make sure the settings are as they are supposed to be.

    Run the System File Checker:

    SFC. EXE/SCANNOW

Click on start and type "cmd.exe" (without the quotes)

At the top of the search box, right-click on the cmd.exe and select "Run as Administrator"

In the black window that opens, type "SFC. EXE/scannow"(without the quotes) and press ENTER.

Let the program run and after return what he says when it's done.

-Overheating of the CPU or GPU and or other elements can cause 0 x 116 bugs. Monitor your temperature and ensure that the system is sufficiently cooled.

-GPU failure. Whether the heat, power (PSU) issue, lack of VRAM, etc..

The following software issues can cause a TDR event:

-Incompatible drivers of any kind (two GPU, sound, etc)

    -Messy registry / corrupted

-DirectX bad files (uninstall and reinstall DirectX)

-bad system files (System File Checker - has been run on it)

-Bad driver (some drivers will cause an event due to internal bugs, but they are not nearly as common as many think because of all the previous things, causing the same symptom) - (remove all 3rd party programs and make sure that are not load drivers. Then install only what you need 3rd party stuff and make sure it is the latest version).

    Kind regards

Once I do start safe mode and got WIndows update but can't update due to the update that needs to be in normal mode.
I was able to install Malwarebytes and a full scan. Also installed Spybot S & D and performed a full scan.
