Restore the entire ESX Server

Hello

I currently have a single ESX Server 3.5 running a cluster of virtual machines, including the vCenter who runs it.  The problem is that I am running out of disk space and want to slap in addition to disks and to rebuild the RAID array.  Since I have no second box to vMotion at how can I do this without having to rebuild my entire esx from scratch Server?

Is it possible to use some kind of imaging tool that will recognize the VMFS partitions and create an image of the server on a large drive and then restore it to a larger painting afterwards?

I have no other than VCB backup tools at my disposal.

Thanks in advance.

Take a look at the following Vmware KB

  • Upgrade virtual Center 2.02 VC 2.5 on the new server. Upgrade ESX 3.02 ESX Server 3.5. and add the new ESX Server.

    Hello

We are due to upgrade our VMWare environment. ESX 3.02 x servers virtual Center 2.02 and 3.  We have new material on which to install Virtual Center and we are also adding a new ESX Server.

I read various guides for virtual center upgrade and watched questions on the forum, but can not see everything that relates to the way I thought to do. I want to install Virtual Center 2.5 on the new server and I would refer her to the current virtual cenre database.  Is this supported?

I then install ESX 3.5 on my new ESX Server and add it to the virtual Center. Then I would start the upgrade / rebuild other servers using VMotion to migrate all VM the next server to be rebuilt on the new server running ESX 3.5.

    Would this work.

What is the best way to upgrade the virtual center of new material and a new Version?

Thank you for all the advice that can be offered.

    Kind regards.

Yes, it is an upgrade that is supported.  Don't forget there will be an upgrade for your DB schema and it may take some time.  Just make sure that you have a good backup of your DB before you start.

I then install ESX 3.5 on my new ESX Server and add it to the virtual Center. Then I would start the upgrade / rebuild other servers using VMotion to migrate all VM the next server to be rebuilt on the new server running ESX 3.5.

I agree entirely, I drive rebuild is the way to go.

Upgrade to the current version using the .iso image file.  Don't forget the license server, which is a standalone update and are located in the folder /vpx of the vCenter .iso

    Upgrade path:

    1 vCenter

    2 ESX

    3 VMware Guest Tools

  • Unable to virtualize the host esx Server quadcore AMD Barcelona B3

I have a server with AMD Quad Core CPU Barcelona B3 32 GB of RAM. I installed ESX 4.0 update1 on it successfully. After that, I try to virtualize esx server on this server. I added the new virtual machine with a standard configuration. When I try to boot the cdrom ESX4.0 I get the error message shown in the attachment.

I tried with esx 3.5 and 4. Same mistake.

cpuinfo on the esx host recognizes that UC is B3.

I would be grateful no work around for this work.

    Thanks in advance

It seems that your host is in an EVC cluster configured for Opterons third generation.  VCA usurps the guest not to not CPUID settings for a 'lowest common denominator' CPU, which is, unfortunately, a B2.  Try to remove the EVC cluster host.

  • Non-visible LUNs to the second esx Server

Hi, I have two HP G4p esx 3.5 servers attached to an MSA1000 with a hub via the emulex fibre FCs I had created two LUNS on the MSA with the ACU. One esx server sees the two LUNS created but the other cannot see the LUNS even after doing a rescan. Sometimes when making him analyze again the VI is suspended. I have obsereved both esx servers to see two different WWPN pointing to two different targets. I want both esx servers to see the same LUNS shared so I could run somewhat your since I'm new to vmware technology. I enclose a snapshot that I think could someone out there with the possible workaround to the issue.

    Thank you

I agree with other posters - make sure your zoning is correct on the FC switch and also ensure that you have checked boxes correct and applied, in the selective presentation of storage (SSP) within the ACU. If this is all OK, a new scan of the storage should display the logical unit number.

You're talking about the different WWPN is the Emulex HBA on their respective hosts.

  • Measures to restore the Foglight Management Server

    Hi team,

I have FMS version 5.6.5 and I've updated to 5.6.10...

I want to know the steps to restore an earlier version of FMS 5.6.5 and also data bases.

    I use SQLSERVER based FMS.

I have not found good in any documentation, e-docs.

To restore the previous Foglight installation directory:
    1
CD to the directory where you want to install Foglight.
    2
If the backup of the old installation is not compressed, go to step 3. If the backup is a ZIP file, unzip it first:
    gunzip /. tar.gz
    3
If the backup of the old installation is a archive (.tar file), extract it. Use the following syntax:
    tar xvf .tar
The former Foglight installation directory is now restored.

I'm not understanding the steps above, which is given in the e - doc

    Please give me correct steps

    Hello

to return to an earlier version, you will need to make a backup of both files in the FMSHOME and the content of the database.

Restore the files (for example for a copied folder or non-archivage that you archived before), don't forget to restore the database (edocs explains mysqldump works I think, other databases need to follow their respective instructions).

The red line is where it stops to make.

Without any error message or of a more complete description of your workflow and your computer you'll first of all your model of troubleshooting. Here is how to do this.

The first thing we do is to select all the layers that extend on the timeline when the rendering fails. It seems to me like the solid black and the two adjustment are the only layers that are active when the computer breaks down. With these selected layers, press U twice to reveal all the modified properties of the layers. It seems that you have Magic Bullet Looks applied for the adjustment layer that has a few properties revealed. There must be something inside your comp or something I do not understand is happening with the solid black. You didn't do a very good job to label your timeline so anyone can understand what is happening.

When you have all changed properties revealed try setting your workspace to begin just before it fails and then end just seconds after these layers of problem start and run a test rendering using just the work area if you get another failure and then start to turn off the effects or reset the properties one by one until you find what is the cause of the problem and then report. It could be anything.

If you do not get a failure of rendering with the shortened work area, and then something happens in the first part of the timeline that is gobbling up your memory. You will find the changed each layer properties and start turning things at once to find out what is happening.

Yet one thing and this should have been my first comment. Make sure that the AE and all your belongings are up-to-date.

  • Copy the files/etc/passwd and/etc/Group from your ESX Server to the machine that you want to use as map server

I'm trying to set up an NFS share on my windows server so that I can do vMotion.  I have 2 ESX servers that will access the storage location so that I can vMotion the content on an ESX Server to the other ESX Server.  I came across many discussion forums who say I need to "copy the files/etc/passwd and/etc/Group for your ESX Server to the machine that you want to use as map server"... How can I copy these files onto my ESX Server?

I am VERY VERY new to VMware and will need step by step instructions on how to do it.

    Try this http://vmetc.com/2008/02/19/create-a-nfs-share-for-vm-iso-files-with-windows-2003-server-r2/ and this

    http://ITKnowledgeExchange.TechTarget.com/it-consultant/Configuring-NFS-in-Windows/

To copy the files everywhere I would use WINSCP which based a gui app secure copy, which should make it easy to copy the file into the Windows box

  • NATing between an ESX server and the Virtual Center Server.

We strive to set up a server to VirtualCenter 2.5 inside a firewall and put servers ESX 3.5 within each of our customer networks. The problem is that within each client network, the IP address must be coordinated. Support of ESX 3.5 originating server, and if so, how do I set up? If not, how VMware plans to support this?

    I think I am confused?

    It is on this link?

Supported for VirtualCenter 2.0 only NAT

This version supports for the connection from ESX Server 2.5 and VirtualCenter 3.0 hosts using NAT (NAT). To configure ESX Server to connect to a VirtualCenter server is configured behind a NAT, you must add the following in vpxd.cfg configuration setting:

    < vpxd >

    ...

    < managedip >ipAddress< / managedip >

    ...

    < / vpxd >

When the IP address is the address of the host ESX Server uses to communicate with the VirtualCenter server.

See KB 2195771 "Manually setting Cluster IP address for Clustered VirtualCenter Server" for more information on the manual configuration of the IP address in the file vpxd.cfg.

Also note that the NAT must be configured to allow packets UDP Port 902 of this IP address.

  • How to control vmotion license to the ESX Server

I have 5 servers ESX 3.5 U3 in my vCenter.  Two are using host license and three are in a cluster and using the server license assigned by my license server, that runs on vCenter.  However, my ESX servers two stand alone using the host license receive a license of vmotion by my license server and my ESX servers in my cluster but cannot get a license of vmotion because their attributed to the wrong ESX Server.

How can I get the vmotion license released by the ESX servers who don't need and make it available on my ESX Server who need?  My three ESX servers in cluster shared storage for vmotion and don't have my two stand alone ESX servers.

I tried simple things, like the disconnection of servers and ESX servers in reconnection vCenter, re-reading of license files, restart the license server, etc..  license and vCenter server is 2.5 U4.

    Thanks in advance.  Jim

go to the configuration tab and click Networking, you have a Port VMkernel configuration?  If so, edit click the vSwitch properties, change your VMkernel port settings and uncheck the box that says VMotion: enabled.

  • Can I restore the backup Windows XP on a new computer with Windows 7 COA and upgrade to Windows 7?

    Original title: upgrade question.

I currently have a PC running XP in a system with an IDE drive. The system has many applications that the company has moved the installation discs, so I need to move the contents of the entire disk to a new system. I was about to do the following:

System backup with a recovery boot disk, in this case a USB.

Restore the entire operating system to a new system that will have a SATA drive in it. The new system will have a COST for Windows 7.

My question is, will it work or the absence of the COA of XP on the new system will prevent me to install?

Short answer, "no, this will not work."

It is unclear what you mean by 'backup' and 'restore', but it seems that if you are referring to the creation of a disk image or a clone of disk on an external drive and then either restore the image or cloning to the new computer.  Assuming that both of these computers was provided with Windows pre-installed, this process will almost certainly result in a facility that cannot be 'activated '.  In addition, unless the software you use has something like Acronis Universal Restore, restore the image from your old computer to a player in a new computer with a different hardware simply will not work.

In addition, the lack of an XP license is not the issue.  There are several problems with the process you describe, but basically, an "upgrade" from XP to Win 7 requires a "custom installation" which means that applications should be re-installed.
