  I recently got a new computer Dell laptop, Inspiron 15R, and I want to dual-boot with Windows 8 and Linux. I'm not familiar with Windows. I use Debian based Linux flavors, but I've only used the 32-bit versions on PC with BIOS (not UEFI). I never put in place a system dual boot, I usually just run Linux and one at a time unless I am running from a USB key. The laptop is running Win 8, basically, as he came. I have not updated to 8.1 Win. I have not moved all the files on the laptop yet.

  No it won't be a "clean" installation This will be a facility of factory settings. i.e. Windows pre-installed drivers and preinstalled software such as McAfee. Make sure that you install Dell Backup and Recovery version 1.7.1.2 before using it. See here for more details:

  No, you cannot license is OEM and the virtual machine has a virtual BIOS which will be recognized as another computer. It will not work and you will have problems to activate product. Media created with DBaR does not work on a virtual Dell BIOS or not.

  I just bougth my first laptop from Toshiba, it comes with Windows 7 Professional pre-installed. Before you start to spend hours on it, I wonder if this can be done:

  (1) I would like to use the Windows 7 Professional 64-bit mode, then

  (2) create the second partition on the hard disk to install Windows XP 32 bit on it.

  I was wondering if this is possible and what is the recommended installation sequence. First thing I need to do is to create the recovery for Windows 7 disk, so I guess I have to configure Windows 7 first of all?

  Well, it is highly recommended! Before you do anything with your HARD drive, you must create the recovery disk!

  I m not very well how you can set up a dual boot with Win 7 because I didn't try this, but I did using Vista.
  First you must create a second partition in Vista. This could be done in disk management.
  Then I installed Win XP on the second partition. But after installing XP I could not launch Vista because Vista boot manager was damaged by Win XP.
  To resolve this problem, I used an original disc of Vista (not recovery disc). I started the Vista DVD and it has repaired the Vista Boot Manager. In Vista, I installed EasyBCD.
  EsayBCD is a small tool that allows to add Win XP to the Vista Boot Manager s.
  After the new Vista and Win XP reboot is appeared in the Boot Manager and I could choose between the two BONES.

  I think that you need the same procedure using Win 7

  Linux uses a different label than Windows. Windows using C, D, E... drive, but linux uses sda1, sda2, sda3 (sda means the disc and 1,2,3, partition) labels for partitions. The sda2 partition is probably the 100 MB system. Linux also uses different file systems incompatible with NTFS/FAT32 for Windows file systems. The most common are EXT2/3/4 and also swap which is something like a pagefile (pagefile.sys) on Windows. You can delete the partition HP_TOOLS of linux, but if everything works and you do not need more partitions don't do that. There are stored diagnostic utilities. What are my options if this is not possible. I know one option is to completely wipe the hard drive and start over. But I just wanted to know if I could save my Ubuntu installation.

  To begin with, as you already know, there is no way to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7, it will have to do a clean install.  When you install Windows 7 it will rewrite the MBR and dislodge the grub, you need to reinstall GRUB after Windows installation and you need to add the Windows installation for the grub.

  If your hard drive has enough free disk space, you can install a newer version of Windows on a separate partition and keep the earlier version of Windows on your computer. It's called a multiboot or dual-boot configuration. Every time that you start your computer, you can choose which version of Windows to run. You can also install Windows 8 on an external hard drive and use it to dual boot.

  Another question.  If Windows adds a pointer for each operating system on the MBR, then what happens if a BONE is removed, for example, when a partition is deleted or a diskette containing a BONE or two is physically deleted?

  Initialization information is contained in the store BCD and not the MBR.  The BCD store can be found in two locations.

  (1) hidden 150 MB system reserved partition.

  (2) in the score where the first version of Windows that you have installed. The folder is named C:\Boot and a bootmgr file name

  Whenever you install a different version of Windows (XP, Vista, Windows 7 or 8), another entry is made in the BCD store.

  Right click and click on the retractable menu.

  Enter the amount you want to assign.

  The disk management window should display the unallocated disk space.
