Rights of root on VMware

Hello

I just wanted to check if the Root access is required to use this feature?

Thank you

Hi VasKun,

Thanks for joining us.

You can certainly use Dell SupportAssit for monitoring of ESX systems you and automatically create support requests. For this you must have guaranteed ProSupport for you systems for running the diagnostics, you can either provide credentials root (and you have to enable ssh for root) or a sudo user identification information. Please let me know if it helps.

Thank you

Prabhat-

• Expand the partition root, RHEL5 & VMware Player

For some reason, the root partition is created with only about 4 GB of space with RHEL 5. Since this is where all the binary files are stored, he quickly gets filled to the top (for me anyway). I would like to expand this to about 10 GB, but I can't. I tried to increase the size of the VHD, but 'Utilities' is greyed out under "Hard drive" in the control of virtual computer settings.

So... my question: how either extend partition or create a virtual machine in the first place, which has more than 4 GB of space?

Thank you!

Hello!

You used the 3.5.5.3795915 Workbench that is defined for vSphere 2016 beta!

Use 3.5.3 Workbench for your esxi, VMware ESXi 6.0.0 Update 2 and everything should be ok

I would pass this test with Workbench 3.5.3 and esxi 6.0 GA (VMware-VMvisor-Installer - 6.0.0 - 2494585.x86_64)

• How the news works of linux vmware-tools associated with the support of actions HGFS?

Just to clarify, if it is possible to get from VMware Tools for Linux Guest users qualified/developer/maintainer.

If memory serves me right, from 12 Workstation, VMware Tools for modified Linux related with the way it handles stocks HGFS.

Installation of VMware tools on many Linux guests, I always see the same behavior.

In some installations it build hgfs module, in others it seems fair to connect on vmhgfs-fuse executable. No module hgfs not charged in this case of the kernel then HGFS works as expected.

Exactly how it works under the hood, how to install VMware Tools/config, can determine whether it is necessary to build the module or just run vmhgfs-fuse?

Well, strange person, not even VMware guys come on this subject. IMHO is a really interesting thing, I almost always use shared folders between guests and hosts, it's so easy and simple WHEN IT WORKS.

The fact that no-one comes on this thread, show what I think always: products like workstation are profoundly less used, average people IMHO use 30/40 per cent of the potential software.

Then, with a few hours and a few Linux guests many kind in hand machines (work with tools in both modes, hgfs.ko or fuse), investigated and found how it works by myself.

This is what I found.

Recent versions of VMware Tools for Linux now seems to check the fuse package installed on guest system installed and when they found him, they try to use vmhgfs-fuse (formerly an Open-vm-tools executable) to mount hgfs actions without the need of the hgfs.ko module and so without needing to compile the module often broken kernel. For example, hgfs.ko thin build up to kernel branch 4.4 and it is broken again on 4.5.

The script vmware-config - tools.pl also seems power - also when it detects the fuse package - properly configure autostart for hgfs share.

That's all, and it's very useful for me. Hope it will be for others.

• Reset password on behalf of "vmware" Orchestrator Configuration for a device

Today I've updated our Orchestrator device to the latest version to correct the error of the bash shell. Before I did I connected to the device using accounts to the root and vmware (root used for vmware and web site of the device used to connect to the web site configuration) - both worked so I don't know I got the correct password before the update.

After the update and restart, root always works with the initial password I had set, but vmware account no longer works. I tried the original on the box password (vmware/vmware) and the password that I know worked before the upgrade - no work. I found a lot of posts, how to reset the password when running with a host Windows Orchestrator - but not the device. Does anyone know how to reset it when you use it?

Also - is this a known issue? Updated unit horks the configuration password?

Thank you

• How do you get tools VMWare Fusion refuses to install the full package of VMWare tools?

Host operating system: OSX 10.9.1

• How to find default VMware drivers SCSI for XP?

After the upgrade to Fusion 5 I get this message when you start Windows XP:

«Windows XP does not include the drivers for the card SCSI BusLogic VMware Fusion uses virtual SCSI devices.»

To use these virtual SCSI devices, install the VMware driver in the virtual machine. Download the driver from "http://vmware.com/info?id=43". " "

(Is also happened after upgrading Fusion 4, but never resolved it then either. Buy a Windows machine to do my taxes last year).

The referenced link does not point to SCSI drivers, at least not directly, but to all downloads.

I tried one was downloaded as a floppy, vmscsi - 1.2.0.4.flp. (Site downloads and knowledge base are offline now, so can't give you the precise link used to download it.)

After mounting the floppy drive and pointing to it after asking XP to update its SCSI driver, then by restarting the guest, I always get the message of needing a BusLogic driver and the guest is really slow.

Is this the right site to download VmWare SCSI driver?

Also, I found an article in the knowledge base on switch between free and BusLogic, editing the .vmx file (called, ""changing the type of SCSI controller used on a Fusion VM ""), but this did not help.

I followed the advice given here of the virtual hardware upgrade.

I try to use the appropriate SCSI driver?

Is there a reason to continue to use the SCSI, or that the only option?

Add the following to the configuration of the Virtual Machine's .vmx file.

buslogic.nodriver = "FALSE"

Take a look at: changing the file .vmx for your VM of Fusion (1014782)

Note the link above may give a time-out of the bridge as it seems that VMware has problems at the moment.

If you want the driver to take a look at:/Applications/VMware Fusion.app/Contents/Resources/vmscsi.flp

Or download VMware SCSI Driver Disk

• VMWare Fusion 4: vmrun command not found

Hello

I upgraded my VMWare Fusion since version 3 to version 4. I used the installer of VMware-Fusion - 4.0.2 - 491587 - light .dmg

Now I'm not able to run vmware via vmrun command in the terminal. On the audit "/ Library/Application Support/Vmware Fusion", the only thing I see is a license file (license-merger-30-e1-...). So that in Version 3, there was formerly several packages including vmrun. I used to specify the path to this folder to run vmrun and never faced any problem with Fusion 3. Where will I get vmrun in Fusion 4?

The details of my system are:

MAC OS - 10.6.8

VMware Fusion - 4.1.1 (536016)

Plese help me in using vmware to the terminal is very important for my scripts.

Thank you

Hi, kamalik.
vmrun is in a 'VMware Fusion.app' bundle package.
/ Applications/VMware Fusion.app/Contents/Library/
In the Finder, ctrl-click(or right click) the bundle 'VMware Fusion.app', then select 'Show Package Contents '.
A Finder window should open displaying the contents of the package "VMware Fusion.app".
All the best.
• How to install VMware Tools on Ubuntu 9.10 guest?

Hello!

I have VMware 6.5.3 for Windows. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 32-bit and I don't know how to install tools guest inside Linux. Guest Windows, it's a blink of an eye, but here are more complicated. Can someone help me with step by step tutorial how to install this on Ubuntu 9.10? I'm newbie here.

When I click the button to install the tools I just get open File Browser with the file .txt, RPM and gz. Any file I click on I can't run Setup. Please help!

It's a little more complicated because each OS has a core (all about that), and Linux, you can have different versions of kernel. Thus, the shell script (files ending in .sh) compiles all the binaries against what you have. I believe that the version of Ubuntu has headers of the kernel with it, so that you would do is:

1. go to places, downloads (the desktop menu bar)

2. find your gz file, right click and select Extract here (I normally do it from the command-line using tar - zxvf, but this should work too)

3. open this directory, right-click on the vmware-install file and select "Run as a program" (in this way you can kick it off)

4. open a terminal (command prompt) and cd to that directory (should be cd downloads/vmware-tools-distrib)

5. Type sudo./vmware-install.sh

6. Enter your password when prompted, then go with the default values, and you should be set. Make sure to run the configuration script (it will ask you if you want to, and you do, but if you mess up that part you can run it later so no biggie) and then sign out and sign back in. You should not need to reboot and everything should work immediately.

At boot, you might see no ERROR. It's probably the HGFS mount is not working due to no shared directories. Don't worry about this for now. If it bugs you, you can comment on him in/etc/fstab (but don't mess with it until you're a bit better). Snapshots are your friend, so use it as your rescue as trash several times your VM Linux, because it will happen.

• VMware-vim-cmd

Hello

Could you tell me what that the syntax of the vmCfgPath of the following command:

VMware-vim-cmd rsrc/hostsvc/vm_config_get & lt; vmCfgPath & gt;.

I tried /vmfs/volumes/xxx/xxx/xxx.vmx of vmware-cmd - l and /xxx/xxx/xxx.vmx but nothing works.

Any ideas?

Dominic

As mentioned, you will need to provide the virtual machine VmId.

Here is an example of a virtual machine, lifting say Quentin

In ESX (i) 3.5 you'd:

[root@himalaya ~]# vmware-vim-cmd vmsvc/getallvms | grep Quentin
4288   Quentin                           [http://himalaya-local-SAS.Savvio|http://himalaya-local-SAS.Savvio] Quentin/Quentin.vmx                                                      winXPProGuest           vmx-04

4288 would be the value you would use in the command:

[root@himalaya ~]# vmware-vim-cmd hostsvc/rsrc/vm_config_get 4288
(vim.ResourceConfigSpec) {
dynamicType = ,
entity = 'vim.VirtualMachine:4288',
changeVersion = ,
lastModified = ,
cpuAllocation = (vim.ResourceAllocationInfo) {
dynamicType = ,
reservation = 0,
expandableReservation = false,
limit = -1,
shares = (vim.SharesInfo) {
dynamicType = ,
shares = 1000,
level = "normal",
},
overheadLimit = ,
},
memoryAllocation = (vim.ResourceAllocationInfo) {
dynamicType = ,
reservation = 0,
expandableReservation = false,
limit = 2048,
shares = (vim.SharesInfo) {
dynamicType = ,
shares = 5120,
level = "normal",
},
overheadLimit = ,
},
}

On ESX 4.0, you also have the option to use vmware-cmd to extract value. You first need to get the path to your virtual machine, and then use the getidoption:

[root@himalaya ~]# vmware-cmd /vmfs/volumes/4aa95d52-c297af51-90e2-003048d9586a/Quentin/Quentin.vmx getid
getid() = 4288

Either one will work, but do not forget the majority of entry to the vimsh when dealing with a machine virtual will be it's VmId.

• Sudoers configuration to plink.exe using the root?

Hello

I am interested to run the scripts using the file plink.exe. We have allowed on ssh root login on all of our esx servers so should I add the following to our suders file?

...

root ALL = (ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL

...

Or must run the script just because we root? I have not tried yet just in case where it is a bad idea to use the following line...

I tried to run scripts and he does not here:

Disconnected: User abandoned when host key checking

To: line: 1 character: 12

+ C:\plink.exe & lt; & lt; & lt; & lt; -v - lot - pw password1 [email protected] 'sudo-u root /etc/vmware/esx.conf cat.

Is the error above due to the password prompt? I have connected to the server before...

Thank you

Packetboy.

The PuTTY tools (including plink) cache host registry keys.

The first time that you connect to a server, it will ask you if you trust the connection.

If < Yes >, the host key is stored in the registry, and calls will not ask the same question.

I suspect that this is the first time that you connect to the host with the PuTTY plink controls is called in "batch" mode, it can't show you the question.

The simplest solution is to connect once interactively (with putty.exe for example) to the host and let it store the host key in the registry.

BTW, if you allow root connections SSH (which is not recommended for security reasons), there is no need to configure sudo on the host.

• vSphere Client: bad user name or password

Hello

I'm new on the vSphere server and it seems that I made my first big mistake.

I installed a 6 of VMware ESXi server and I am not able to connect to the admin with the vSphere Client account more.

If I use the same credentials to log in via ssh or PowerCLI, I can connect and everything works. But when I use the vSphere client it says that the user name or password is incorrect.

I tried to add a new user in the shell but when I try to connect with this user via the vSphere Client, I get the message that the account does not have permission to open a session.

I also tried to use "pam_tally2 - user = root - reset" to reset the counter of failed connections, but it always says 0 failures and doesn't change anything for me.

Change the admin password (in the shell via passwd) doesn't help either.

Is it possible to grant permissions for connection the Client vSphere for users outside of the shell or the PowerCLI?

Or is it possible to "wake-up" or "unlock" my admin account?

Thanks in advance,

DerpDerpson

You can try with your test user?

• VCA - Datacenter & Cloud experience as a newbiee!

Coming from a cisco networking background and with 2.5 years of experience I was eager to learn and to explore the potential of virtualization and Cloud computing. Not to mention that VMware offers a platform estimated to learn the right of root level, thanks to Vmware the e-learning courses and certification.

To be very frank; It took me 1 week of preparation for each certification from scratch. My message to all of you who are totally new to this technology.

VCA_DCV: I recommend before start up with the e-learning courses it is best to have an idea base on technology and content. Read some pdfs base for introduction - love the vmware products and some concepts of underscore. Once you have a good look at the same thing. Return to the e-learning courses to the rhythm of the participant. At least pass by here a couple of times and then try to make a short note that brings out the purpose/significance of vmware products, features of vsphere, vcenter server etc. That you get with an understanding and clarity. I guess for VTC as preparation should be enough. I scored 400/500

VAC_Cloud: after going through several posts where people claim it is a hard bet that I was quite doubtful to take this test in the first place because I don't have any prior experience. However, I wanted to give it a shot. I followed the same approach for both cloud and appeared for the test. I failed in the 1st attempt (283/500). However I found the questions were not too hard, but yes, we certainly need a better understanding of the concepts yet they are many! I recommend going through the e-learning courses for at least 4 - 5 times, take notes, don't jump no matter which slide and finally make sure you take the practice test again and again (they change few questions in different sets) it's best to familiarize yourself with any questions. I found a couple of in question appeared on the review of the practice test. So make sure that you do it right. And you are good to take the test. I myself presented to the test after 2 days of rigorous preparation and review. I did the review fairly well.

Now I'm on my way to my VCP - VTC training and certification.

It will be useful.

All the best

Thanks for the information. I am a newbee VMware and helps me a lot to prepare for the exam...

• vSphere - ESX4 vcbMounter/vcbRestore"command line.

Hi all

I heard, but I can't find anything official, ' vcbMounter/vcbRestore' orders within ESX server will be available in ESX version 4 (vSphere) also,

is this true?

Thank you

cordially Matteo

Yes, I can confirm that they still exist. I do not use these tools, not sure if anything has changed, probably but there no 3.5.

Export Flags:
-M: If set, the disk is exported into a single (monolithic) file.
When turned off (default), the disk is split into multiple 2GB files.
-F: If set, the disk is exported as "flat" disk, with no optimizations.
When turned off (default), the exported disk files will be more compact as
unused space in the disk image is not included in the exported file.

Examples:
+) Do a full VM style backup of vm "foo.bar.com" across the SAN,
talk to ESX/VC host "wisdom.bar.com" as user "vc" with
password "foobar". - Export will go to "d:\backups":

vcbMounter -h wisdom.bar.com -u vc -p foobar -a ipaddr:foo.bar.com \
-r d:\backups\foo-fullVM -t fullvm

Full VM backups export an entire virtual machine into a set of
files within a directory. Backing up this file set allows for the
entire virtual machine to be restored later on.

+) Do an automatic unmount of the export just created:

vcbMounter -h wisdom.bar.com -u vc -p foobar \
-U d:\backups\foo-fullVM

An automatic unmount will work for both file-level and full VM mounts.
(A full VM unmount operation just has to delete the exported files.)
