Satellite 5100-201 - screen is flickering and distorted

Hello!
I am owner of a period of 5 years old Sam. 5100-201 which worked great until today.
Now, I have problems with the graphics card I guess, the screen is flickering and distorted and then I mosztly get a blue screen that says that the graph
card drivers is running in a loop.

I have a dual boot, so I checked it on the two win xp installations and it is the same problem on both, so it seems to be a prob. real hardware!
So I think that I have a graphics card problem, but as far as I know, the chip is attached to the motherboard and it is not replaceable, is that at the time?
There is no work around which I can do to make sure what is the problem?

Any help would be much appreciated.

See you soon,.
Achim

Why connection to the external monitor? !!

> blue screen indicating that the graphic card drivers is running in a loop.
The reason for this blue screen can be a problem of graphics card DRIVER or the graphics card itself.
For me, it looks like a graphics card problem. Maybe overheating

> as far as I know, the chip is attached to the motherboard and is not replaceable
Yes, to you on time. In my knowledge on older models, the graphics card is fixed on MB and the entire motherboard must be replaced

  • Satellite 5100-201-size Limitation of HARD drive

    Hello

I have a Satellite 5100-201 P4 - M 1.6 Ghz with 30 GB IDE HDD and 1024 MB of RAM. I use my 'old' Satellite only for music (the largest sound found on laptops!) but my HARD drive got a little weak.

So my question is if there is no limit on the size of HARD drive for this laptop. I would buy an IDE 120 GB or 160 GB HDD at 5400 RPM and 8 MB Cache. If this is not possible, I can also take the 80 GB of HDD (another puts it on say works), but liked better!

    Thanks for your help!

    Greetings,
    Fab

    Hey Buddy,

I think that the maximum capacity of the HARD drive would be 120 GB because the laptop has a limitation of LBA 28 bits. This means that only the hard disks up to 128 GB usable 120 GB would be the maximum. 5400 RPM and 8 MB cache are ok.

By the way: it of Nice to read that you are always so pleased with old Satellite 5200 :)

    Hello!
I am owner of a Toshiba Satellite 5100 201. The five keys 9-O - L-.-led on the keyboard do not work. Is it a software or a defect of the keyboard control problem or a problem of contact on the map? Does anyone have experience with this problem? Can it be a BIOS problem? I have Bios 1.90.
    Can someone help me?

    Best regards
    Ulrich

    Hello

in most cases, the problem is that there is some dirt on the contacts of the keys.
You must remove and clean and check the connector of the keyboard.
If this help not the keyboard probably is defective and must be replaced.

    Hello

When you purchased your portable Satellite didn t you get a remote control? If this isn't the case, then the unit is not ready to use the remote control. You can also refer to the manuals of s.

AFAIK all units with remote installed a small application called controls. Check in Control Panel if you can find something like that.

  • Differences between Satellite 5100-201 & 5100 603

    Hello

The user guide is not clarify the differences between the models S5100-201 and S5100-603.
I can work on them are different speeds, memory and hard drive, but what about the internal bits?

I have a model 603 broke with a power control fault. Does anyone know if a model-201 motherboard will enter unity of 603?

    Thank you
    Pete

    Hello

I am not a technician, but I found the info that these units have a different graphics card and the two can't handle with RAM max.

    Satellite 5100-201:
    -nVidia GeForce4 440Go 32 MB
-can handle with max 512 MB RAM

    Satellite 5100 603:
    -nVidia GeForce4 440Go 64 MB
-can handle with max 1024 MB of RAM

I'm not 100% sure, but if you swap the Mo together with all hardware, I think that other devices should work, but I put t know how it will work with the BIOS. Maybe the DMI should be rewritten.

There are little guys having very good knowledge on this forum, and I hope that some of them will be post here and say more about it.

  • Satellite 5100-201: overheating after several times

    I have a 5100-201 Satellite.
Recently, a screen problem surfaced: first described images are blurred, then scratches appear, usually the screen collapses provisional modus. I noticed that the laptop gets really hot, and I thought it must be a problem of overheating.

I cleaned empty the notebook, I even opened and checked that the fan rotates properly. Subsequently, the laptop worked once, the fan run constantly and the laptop does not get heated.

The next day, the redone problem surface again and this time I had still a black screen. Now, the laptop starts normally when I turn it on, but I know that after a while it will heat again.

Ah, I also updated the driver for the graphics card, but it did not help. Does anyone have a suggestion?

    Thank you

To protect against overheating of the CPU has to a n internal temperature sensor. If the temperature of computer s reaches a certain level, the cooling fan is turned on or processing speed is lowered. Use the cooling method of the base configuration item in the Toshiba power saver.

In addition, it is very important that you use Notepad in the right position. The area near the gates of cooling module must be free because the fan needs to catch his breath.
It is important for the circulation of fresh air.

  • Satellite 5100/201: problem with the video card or overheating?

    HY,

I have problems with video on a 5100/201 Satellite. It seems that when I press the left side above the graphics card or press a key on the keyboard on this side, the screen begins to be scrambled and vertical lines appear. To end Windows XP resets giving a critical error on the device and the video goes to 640 x 480. Same thing happens when you run Linux Suse 9.0.

My question is what is the cause: map graphic damaged or overheating due to the fan not as effective as originally (my laptop is nearly two years old. Do you have someone be able to find the cause and solved the problem, also with the assistance of Toshiba?
    Any help welcome.

    Hello

I think the problem on your laptop depends on the fan.

A colleague on mine has a 5100-603 and had similar problems.

    The Station changed the fan.

    Good bye

Looks like you can't boot from the CD.
The message insert system disk and press any key any appears because the laptop can not find any operating system and bootable CD.

Please can someone give me some advice.

    Hello

For me, it looks like serious hardware problem.
What you can do is to test the device with an external monitor:
Connect the external display and check if you see something like start screen for Toshiba, etc if you see something like that, then internal laptop screen is defective and must be replaced if not if nothing would seem-> the related problem of the motherboard.

  • Satellite 2410-404: screen is lost and the noisy CPU fan

    Hello

first: sorry for my bad English.

Now: I have several problems with my laptop:
    1. the monitor/screen is lost and does not stand up, so when I want to work with my laptop, I need to address something against the monitor, so it does not fall on the side. All the solutions to this?

    2. my Cpu fan is really strong and I have already opened the case and cleaned, but every day the noise comes back (assumed that his doesn't turn not very well and communicating with once in a while a part of the computer) and I have to reopen and touch several times until it works normally.

    3. Furthermore, I lost my CD of Windows Recovery (OEM Version). Do I have to buy a new one if I want resettled windows?

    Thanks for any help

    Hello

    1. I guess the lid can not stay in the right position, because the hinges are a little loose.

    2. it looks like something wrong with the rotation of the fan. In such cases the easiest way is to change the fan.

    3. you can buy the CD recovery form the Toshiba service partner in your country. It s not very expensive.
But you can also install the original Windows operating system on your laptop and then you can install the drivers of Toshiba and utilities. All Toshiba stuff, you'll be able to download from the Tosh driver page.

  • Satellite 5100-201 problems Windows XP installation (blue screen)

I have this computer and unfortunately I don't have access to the cd that came with the computer because my cousin has lost. I tried to install Windows XP Professional I bought and during the first installation of Windows XP is about to start I get this blue screen of death message: 0x0000007B (0xF7AFC63C, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

The computer was working before but but it was extremely slow and the dvd - rom was not recognizable by windows. I tried all the known windows corrections related to the lack of cd-rom drives, but nothing does the job. I can boot from the cd to boot from windows cd. and I even put updated then the bios to 1.90 1.60.

I have the Toshiba installation CD? There is no other way to install Windows XP Pro? Must I use the Toshiba Recovery CD?

    Hello

Before starting the installation you need to format the HARD disk or an entire partition. Then you can install your operating system with the original CD of Microsoft Windows XP. After this action, you can install the drivers from Toshiba. All the necessary drivers, you can find the Toshiba site.

  • Satellite 5100-201 and HW-Setup / Boot-PW

    Hello!

We have a 5100 (XP SP2, just installed freshley, pilots from today at Toshiba, update the Bios from today ' hui) where it it s not possible to access HWSetup or Boot password (essential). No probs defining a super-pw protect hwsetup, change or modify the settings. no error box appears, no error is logged in the event log.

Is the question on this matter, as the get´s a new laptop computer and we won´t release the old with a password on it.

so, the main question is: how to clear the password.

    see you soon
    Ralf

    Hello

You're right about the ESC key. When starting press ESC button and hold the button. Then press F1 and you will enter the BIOS settings. There, you'll be able to create your personal password.

As far as I know that you can create the supervisor password and the user using the Console from Toshiba. Start the console and go to the Security tab.

  • Satellite Pro S300 - screen is blank and can not restart

A week ago, I left my Satellite Pro S300-EZ2502 at night (as usual). It was fine tonight.

The next day, I got a black screen and a flashing light orange on the left side. I tried to turn it off, don't restart, no dice. I tried removing the battery and restart under just current alternative, nothing, I tried the opposite. Nothing. I tried to let the battery and then recharge. No help. Very rarely when I plug it in again, I will get the green light for a few seconds, but then again the yellow flashing light. Nothing EVER on the screen.

I've only had this laptop since MAY! What's wrong!!

Have you installed extra RAM in the system?

Try to remove one of the Modules or swap them around.

Otherwise, it may be a motherboard problem. An FSL can repair it for you - free if its under warranty.

  • Satellite 5100 - LCD screen no longer lights

Hi, I hope someone will help me on this problem.

After disassembly of the top satellite covers the lcd screen that does more, but I guess the system is working properly because I can hear windows access "jingle". I think that I reconnected it all cables (green and white connectors for the video card), but I'm not sure thin brown/white/black cable of the lcd screen. That's all

    Hi stefano88,

Why you have disassembled the LCD?

To be honest I n don't know cables, you want to say you also plugged the UPS FL for LCD display? This is necessary because FL inverter controls the backlight of your screen.

Can post you a photo of the cables you want to say?
