  Looks like a problem familiar to me, as I had the same one with the Daemon tools. After installing these tools, I couldn't start my Windows XP. I guess that it somehow mixed upwards of some drivers or registry entries, but not sure about that.

  OK, you can try to uninstall tool first start Vista in safe mode (press F8 before Windows starts upward).
  You should then be able to enter in Vista without problem.

  Meanwhile, I have a bootable USB key with win7, but the
  RepairOptions can't find a backup to fix... but I see
  3 partiions, besides that theres a normal system backup and
  a boot partition.

  I get this message when I switch on my compaq CQ40 with Vista 32. I just downloaded and installed SP2 via the Task Manager. Always stops after the Welcome screen. Another thing I never noticed before: during the boot and just after opening orb, the Welcome to Windows message lights up with the small circle of progress, then I hear a sound of gong just before startup fails.   The Ethernet device could be LAN wireless, and mass storage could be the Intel Matrix Storage Manager or Intel Chipset. You have installed these drivers?
