Satellite M40 - 244--> Boot from a USB

Hi all

I have a Satellite m40-244 with a DVD player which unfortunately is out of service.

I would like to know if it is possible to boot from a USB key to reinstall Windows or Linux. In the BIOS there only HDD, floppy, CD-ROM, and LAN drive options.

Does anyone know how to boot from a USB? I tried an external USB DVD drive, it does not work. I don't know if I'm doing the right way.

Thank you.

Hello

As far as I know that of not possible because the M40 BIOS does not support this!
As you mentioned in your ad; There is only one option for booting from the HARD drive, ODD, LAN and USB FDD (floppy)

Greetings

You can start only this features:
USB FDD, HDD primary, optical devices, network (LAN)

  • Satellite M40 - cannot boot from the recovery cd after format HARD drive

    Hello

After my Satellite M40 - 133 being affected by the virus of security internet I had to wipe my hard drive. The virus wouldn't let me do anything, boot without failure or system restore. I wiped the disk and it still wouldn't load up. That's why I had to do a full erase of the disk including the hidden partition.

After doing his now do not let my boot from the CD of restoration as it says invalid partition as his search for files that must be on the hidden partition. What can I do to get it started. I'm not bothered about to recover anything on the disc. If I remove the hard drive and put the recovery cd in, it excludes the disc and begins to start until he fails to see the hard drive.

Outwardly I can link the drive to another pc and he sees it as a storage device so I'm glad that there is nothing wrong with the hard ware - help please

    Hello

Can you see the HARD drive with all the details in the BIOS?
If this isn't the case, then this means that the HARD drive is faulty or not fully compatible.
If you can see the HARD drive in the BIOS, then this means that the HARD drive is compatible.

But this should not affect booting from a bootable CD.
Even if the HD would not be recognized in the BIOS, you should be able to boot from the CD. For example a live Linux CD has not only any disk HARD because the BONE would not be installed on the HARD drive, but it loads into RAM.

The question is; Why you are unable to boot from any CD?
Maybe the discs are scratched or the CD/DVD drive cannot read the disc more because of problems of laser lens
If possible, try to copy/burn the Windows CD using another computer, and then try to start using the copied disc.

  • Satellite M40-244 - cannot start from CD after driver change

    Hi all

I have a Satellite M40-244 and the original DVD drive is faulty. So I changed the drive with one that is exactly the same (same brand, same date of manufacture).

Under Windows, the new disk is recognized and works perfectly. However, when I try to boot from the CD, I am not able to do. I successfully changed the boot sequence in the bios, I tried all possible combinations without success.

One thing I remember is that when I tried to boot from the faulty driver, I got the message 'Not bootable CD' (the tested CD is bootable and tested on other computers)

Any idea anyone, I desperately need to install a new OS. :-(

  • Satellite U400-10j - how to boot from a USB flash drive?

    Hello

    I have a Toshiba Satellite U400-10j.

I have Ubuntu on my USB flash drive, now I want to boot from it.

I can't find the option in the BIOS to boot from the Usb flash drive.

Second, I noticed that the phone also has an internal memory card reader.
I could load Ubuntu top then to start the memory stick as well?

Your help will be very appreciated.
    Thank you.

I think that it s not able to boot from a USB key on this laptop.
The best way is to use a CD. There, you can start on this notebook and all other laptops.
In the Internet there are many versions of CD of Ubuntu and other Linux systems.

And as said Feliks, it s not able to boot from an SD card because it is not in the BIOS.

  • Satellite Pro U400 - can I boot from a USB?

I am wanting to partition the disk and I don't have a blank CD at hand...

Surprised to discover, there is no option the BIOS to boot from devices USB 2.40.

Please can someone confirm for me that this is not possible?

    Thank you.

    L.

Yes, you can boot from USB FDD, primary HARD disk, optical device and network (LAN)
Unfortunately, the USB is not supported ;(

But if you want to create a new partition on the HARD drive you don't need to boot from a USB n.
Are you using the Vista on your Satellite Pro U400?

If so, you can use the Vista Disk Manager to create a new partition.
To reduce the first partition first and then you can create a new partition using a new space on the HARD drive.

  • How to get the computer to boot from a USB?

I use offline windows Defender. Start the computer to the USB you need. How can I get the computer set up to do this?

my computer is a HP Pavilion e9100z.

    Thanks for any help

    Hello

We will determine if your PC can not even boot from USB devices.  Plug the USB and turn on your PC.  When you get to the HP splash screen, then start typing the escape key to bring up a boot selection menu. If you do not see the USB device then your PC can't boot from a USB device.

If your PC does support booting from a USB device and then read this MS post article.

You always have the option to start Windows Defender from a CD or a DVD.

  • Pavilioin P6710f: Changing Bios then boot from a USB flash drive

How can I update my bios to enable booting from a USB Flash drive. My bios is American Megatrends 6.07, 04/05/2011 and the only options are CD, hard disk, floppy. Is there a way to change this? To test the Windows 10 repair disk I created, my system froze to the blue screen "choose" keyboard layout. I couldn't use the usb mouse or usb keyboard. As a result, I had to restore my system to windows 7 using my Norton Ghost recovery disk and backups that I had done before downloading windows 10.

After the opening of the bios and clicking on the hard drive by default, I found that I had a choice, including the USB Flash drive that I have pugged just forward to restart. This answered my question. Thanks to everyone for their contribution. It was not necessary to Flash the bios after all.

  • Why I can't boot from a USB?

    Hello

Why I can't boot from a USB?   I'm looking to replace a failed hard drive in a Mac Mini 2010. I replaced the hard drive without difficulty.

I have a USB flash drive from known good 10.10.5 with an Installer (tested) well known about it.   I press the power switch, as soon as the startup chime plays, I press the Option (Alt) key.

One of the two following situations occurs. Sometimes, I have a small screen asking me to enter my password Wi - Fi. I get my password and nothing else happens. Sometimes, I get a flashing "?" on a file folder.  In my view, this indicates that the computer cannot find a bootable disc. I've tried resetting the PRAM, but I do not have the sound of the double ring that I was expecting.

Once a Mac is longer than 4 years, his PRAM Battery should replace before resetting the PRAM actually works.

Is this USB Flash drive "slipstreamed.  It works on any other older than 10.10.5 Mac?

What is a copy from another Mac or Mac Mini itself 10.10.5 clone?

Plug you directly into the USB port of the Mac Mini, or using a hub which is powered wall?

  • Portege A100 PPA10A - update the BIOS to boot from a USB device

    Hello

I have an old Portege A100, model: PPA10A-0002LP, but I can't seem to find this model on any Web site of Toshiba, closest I've seen is the "PPA10A - 0002 L'.

I am wanting to know if there is a BIOS update that will allow me to boot from a USB device.

The question I have is that I need to reinstall Windows, but the CD ROm cannot read disks.
This network PXE boot, but I'm new to this sort of thing and have absolutely no idea what to do here.

    Any help would be great,

    Thank you

    Hello

Portege A100 seems to be developed solely for the Australian market.
As you say it is a model number Portege A100 PPA10A - 0002L listed on the Australian page of Toshiba Portege A100 PPA10A-0002LP belongs to the same series which is PPA10A
So in my opinion, the BIOS should work too.

Anyway, I doubt that the BIOS update will add boot options.

Usually the BIOS supports booting from CD/DVD drive, drive HARD, LAN and USB FDD.
It should be possible to boot from a boot disk using a USB FDD drive.
I doubt you'd be able to boot from USB WEIRD since this Portege A100 supports an internal CD/DVD drive.

Is it possible to boot from a USB? I tried to make a bootable usb key, and it really worked on my home pc, but not on the computer laptop... the BIOS settings are correct, as much, I know (legacy usb - fdd) select, first start device floppy drive
    where is the problem?

    Hello

As far as I know it of not possible to boot from the USB key.
Only you can boot from the drive from the external USB floppy drive or CD/DVD compatible external USB.
I found in the user manual that the DVD-ROM (PA3246) drive is available as an external drive option and you can buy the car from the dealer of Toshiba.

  • Re: Boot from external USB HARD drive Toshiba 320 GB (MK3259GSX)

I have PC (Windows7, SATA HDD, without CD/DVD drive), netbook and Toshiba External USB HDD 320 GB (MK3259GSX). Can I boot from the USB HDD? (to install OS or diagnostic tools like Memtest, MHDD etc..)

    I tried:
1 format USB HDD, create the FAT32 partition and make active, copy the files, for example, ISO image of Windows 7 (I also tried bootsect/nt60), but when I reboot and choose from the menu of boot USB HDD it stops after "Verifying DMI pool data".
2 Grub4dos (http://grub4dos.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page), but also had nothing after verifying DMI pool Data given.
    3. If you want to install Windows 7, I tried this tool, http://store.microsoft.com/Help/ISO-Tool, but it did not find my USB HDD.

    Sorry for my English.

Has your computer laptop USB boot option?

Anyway, is unclear to me that you can use this disk external DRIVE for the installation of the OS?
