Satellite M40 (PSM40A) - I had to reinstall XP 3 times

I think my memory is dying but I m not sure and I m not an expert in computer science, but in any case here is what happened.

In the last three months, that I had to reinstall Windows XP 3 times.
The first time, the problem started to happen was a day I went to start my computer and I had the Windows logo screen and I got a message saying some system files missing so I reinstalled.
The next time a month or so down the track I kept getting cyclic redundancy errors of control with music on my hard drive I couldn't play of t them when I went to read my computer would freeze for about 1 min, a beep every 10 seconds approximately or so This then led to the first problem, I had so I had to reinstall it again.

So today I went to reboot my computer and when he got to the Windows logo screen the computer started making a beeping sound and took about 10 minutes to load and I got a message saying this (this application could not be preformed because of an I/o error this message appeared three times then my computer froze filled and I went in the beginning and I couldn't go) even beyond the Windows logo screen again so I did a complete reinstall Windows and its working fine now?

I sure that sounds like a hard drive problem, any ideas of m?

It's strange, but you should test the RAM and the HARD drive before you swap something.
I can recommend two tools for this.

http://www.HitachiGST.com/HDD/support/download.htm#DFT
The Drive Fitness Test can test the HARD drive. Download the CD image, burn on a CD and then boot from it.

http://Memtest86.com/
Memtest86 is a diagnostic tool for RAM. You will find a CD image too.

Use both tests and post your result.
I hope I could help you.

    Hello

I restarted in safe mode, and it seems to get stuck loading \windows\system32\drivers\classpnp.sys.

I have tried everything I can think: Startup Repair running on the installation disc, install the latest versions of the drivers, update BIOS, disk reformatting, etc, but nothing seems to work.

    Can anyone help?

    Hello Rob

Please don t get me wrong, but this old notebook was designed for Windows XP Home edition. I imagine that you have problems with the installation of Win7, but I'm afraid that there is not much you can do about it.

This laptop old models are not supported for Win7 and Toshiba will not offer some updates as the BIOS update. If you want to use the newer operating system probably you must also update your hardware. Maybe it's time for the new laptop computer. ;)

  • Satellite M40: BIOS update failure is covered by the warranty?

I own a satellite M40. I had some problem with it, and tried to update the bios to see if he could he solved.
I flashed the bios with the windows-based utility, but the shutted of the computer down without any warning.

Now the laptop comes on only 1 or 2 and then put off the coast.

I bought this Toshiba, 10 months ago. So, is an update of the bios failed outside the warranty?

    Thank you

    Hello Stéphane

We can discuss your problem here, but nobody can help you. You must contact the Service partner and clarify this point. Sorry but there is nothing that you can do it alone.

  • Good for Satellite M40 DVD DVD player model

Can someone tell me what model of drive of DVD the Satellite M40 (PSM40A) was supposed to come with?
According to Windows (XP Pro), mine was initially a carpet * a UJ831S, the version of firmware 1.00. Due to problems with this drive, it was replaced under warranty by Toshiba.

According to the label, the new disc is a carpet * a UJ840, with annotation HW 1.10 FW 1.40, which I assume the hardware and firmware versions respectively. Problem is that this drive is reports still on Windows as a UJ831S, a firmware version 1.40 now.

I am sure that Toshiba write their own firmware for these drives and so have control over what is reported for Windows. I suspect that this model of M40 should never take a UJ840 and so it's to be deliberately badly reported to Windows as a UJ831S. I never saw the label on the original disc and have therefore no ideae if it was actually a UJ831S.

The reason why I'm curious is that I always have problems playing some audio CD original with this player and think that it could be a problem of hardware compatibility. It is certainly not a question of protection of the CD, and the CD set fine on other laptops I tried them, with the exception of Toshibas with Mat * one or recorders of DVD Teac.
Toshiba say that nothing can do more.

I must point out that this laptop was purchased in New Zealand and can be specific to the Australasian market. I write here because the New Zealand from Toshiba web site (actually ends up on the Austraian site) does not appear to have a forum.

    Thank you
    Malc

    Hello

I studied a bit in the internet on the disc that came with this unit but I can't find useful information about the name of the drive and which drive was delivered with this device, but I guess it was a UJ831S.
However, I suggest that the new drive is UJ840, but the Windows operating system recognizes this disk as a UJ831S because of the firmware.

I found this topic on the identification of bad player:
    http://forums.computers.Toshiba-Europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=10034&start=15

In this case, the drive was out of life, and he was replaced by another having the same properties.
I think that he is even on your laptop.

I had a problem reading dvd + rw (s) with this record, he had no problem with engraving (x 4), but it reads only 2 x. And once she destoyed a rw (there was more dark spots (like burned) on the media after, maybe the middle was very cold or what?).
my current firmware is n/a (don't know how he know) and the question:
    1. where can I find the latest firmware? and is it useful?

    2. I recently noticed the becklight on screen is worse in the two lower corners (lower whole sections begins to be odd), is this normal by others or what?

    Hi Jon

I'll be honest to you. Satellite M40 is fairly new. Why you n t contact your local dealer or service partner and clarify these issues. The warranty is still valid, and perhaps the reader will be replaced. Here on the forum, you can wait for days for suggestions that will help you a lot.

One of my friends has the same unit about a year now and it works very well. I liked laptop and I burn DVDs of film sometimes to his unit. So far, there is no problem with him.

Good luck and thank you to a return if there is a serious hardware problem.

  • Satellite M40-313 - need to reinstall XP, but don't have the CD

    Hello: o).

I have a SATELLITE M40-313, and I also have the serial number for the family XP Edition version
Toshiba. But I don't have the cd that can restore / reinstall the system. A normal Xp Home
version won't, because he's going to say that the series is invalid. So I need to get my hands on
a version of Xp that will focus on this system. And I live in the UK, but in Poland, Gdansk.

Sombody on ther so know what I should do to get this computer back in shape?

    Thank you so mutch!
    : o).

    > A normal XP Home Edition version won't, because he's going to say that the series is not valid

You must use the Toshiba Recovery disk or the original disc of Microsoft Win XP with a clean serial key! You cannot use a version of Win XP as part of the serial key you found at the bottom of the unit that this key belongs to the OEM version pre-installed on laptop and will not work with any other version of Win XP.

Since the M40 is an older model mobile phone, you will not be able to order recovery of disk he abandoned s
Therefore, use a clean WIN XP CD. The Toshiba drivers are placed to the driver page

Normally I upload these files and install them, but I can't the computer on at all.
I can't get the safe mode or safe mode with prompt orders and last known configuration failed.

I have a Toshiba restore disk but I don't want to do a full reformat and the other option on the drive says not to use it if you know what you
made with files - and I do not have.

I watch the options he had, but it just made no sence and would not make my situation worse.

    I hope someone can help.

    Thanks much sally

    Hello!

Looks like you have a strange virus on your laptop

But I put t know why you don t want to do a complete reformat of the laptop. The point is that the Toshiba Recovery disk contains a picture of the factory settings. This means that you can restore t that only some files and you need to do a complete reinstallation of the operating system. To be honest, I think that it is in any case the best solution, because I think that the virus can only be deleted if you format the HARD drive using the Toshiba recovery disc.
To use the only recovery disk, you must boot from it and follow the instructions on the screen. It of easy to use and only takes a few minutes.

If you want to save some files before you begin reinstalling Windows, you can put the HARD drive into an external HARD drive enclosure. Then you can back up your data from another computer. I did it and I have had success with this and maybe you too. It s worth a try.

And let me give you a little advice. After you have reinstalled Windows to use a good antivirus program and keep up-to-date. I have a good experience AntiVir (Freeware) and Kaspersky. In addition to activate the Windows Firewall or you use another firewall. Don t forget to install the latest Service Pack for your operating system and activate the Windows automatic update function. If you can get all of the updates in a timely.

I hope I could help you, and now you understand the best deal.

    Good bye

  • Satellite M40: Hibernation Mode does not work

    Hi all

My satellite M40 does Hibernate. If I choose the Hibernate function, my screen tells me that the laptop is in hibernation. But then after that it is not closed in hibernation, not he again! I can't Hibernate! Sleep mode functions! A few days ago I had uninstalled by mistake "common modules", but then I reinstalled it. Could someone tell me what drivers are needed for the hibernation?

Is this a driver problem? And why Windows checks my HD every other time I start my laptop. I found no other problems then the hibernation and verification of the HD. Do I have to uninstall all the Toshiba drivers, including common modules and reinstall all the new? It would solve my problem? Or should I just try with a BIOS update!

Best regards and thanks for your help!
    YLS

    Hello

I think that the resettlement of the damaged common modules might be a reason why hibernation doesn t work properly.
To my knowledge, the common modules are very important for the good condition of all Toshiba Utilities market.
The Toshiba Power Saver controls standby and hibernation. So I guess it's also the common modules.
But the common modules must be installed in a first time prior to installation of other public services.

It s very strange that the Windows checks each time you HDD. It seems that there are corrupted files or sectors on the HARD disk. Maybe that's why hibernation doesn't work because the hibernation saves the State on disk.

However, the new installation of operating system from the recovery CD Toshiba should solve your problem, but before you begin installation you need to make the backup of all your data and files.

PS: first try the chkdsk/r option. This should repair the bad sectors on the HARD disk. Maybe you do not need to reinstall the operating system.

  • Satellite M40-237: CD Boot does not not + is possible startup USB key drive

    * Model: Satellite M40-237 (PSM40E) *.

I decided to reinstall windows, my hard drive is now formatted. So as usual, boot from the Windows CD is necessary to start the instalation but it does not start. I never had problems like this, always worked boot. It's as if there is no bootable CD in the drive (but it is bootable and it works on another PC).

-J' have the latest version of the BIOS
-The BIOS detects the optical drive and everything is ok, HARD is the ODD main drive is secondary
-J' tried selecting the boot priority, with F12 and/or the BIOS setting but it works anyway

What could be the problem here? Drive does not properly (hopefully, that and not something worse)? I had some problems with the drive I have (...) before, but it reads the disc normally and as I said start was working fine before. I cleaned the lens a bit, disconnected it and it put. Is there something more, what can I do?

I'll try to find someone who has the player that fits so I can try with that one, but who knows when is what will be.

Now, here's the second question, which I've linked to this. Because my laptop is practically useless now (I can't install anything), is it possible to boot from a:
    (a) optical drive USB external
    (b) USB flash drive

BIOS on this laptop has no USB boot option, it has HARD drive / CD / floppy / network. But I red somewhere this FDD = USB legacy emulation is enabled.

If that is correct, I should just plug in the USB key and select FDD as boot option? If I can't find a USB optical drive, I thought make it bootable USB flash drive and copy the installation of windows xp on it. So once it starts in DOS I start just the installer from the key.

    TNX

First I must say that the initialization of memory flash USB (USB key) is not possible and you shouldn't t waste time to try this.

With regard to your reader of CD/DVD boot problem

  • Satellite M40-313 and Vista

    Hello

I m a surfer of money with a counter top, but my 22 year old daughter, as recently bought it a second hand Toshiba Satellite M40 313, now she wanted to put Windows Vista Ultimate OS on it, I had my doubts, so I increased the RAM to 2gbs and gave it a try, it seems to work very well, he's a bit slow , after a couple of days a week and after several software maybe init started acting a bit erratic.

Question is the will of the hold of the laptop operating system or would it be wise to low-grade it back.

Yes, you must reinstall WXP. There are several reasons for this. My friends has the same model of laptop and it works well with Windows XP Home edition.
So, this former model of laptop is designed for Windows XP Home edition and Toshiba offers no Vista support for this model of laptop. This means that there are no drivers or tools or utilities available. You will never be able to set up well with Vista.

Install WXP using recovery delivered image or install your own WXP and all drivers, tools and utilities. You can find them on the Toshiba support page. In my view, it must be some leaves in ARCHIVES.

If you need more help with installing Windows XP edition family thanks for posting again.

  • Windows on Satellite M40-276 - no visible HARD drive installation

    Hello

Since the end of the week, I had time to start my Toshiba Satellite M40-276 (PSM44E)...

I installed Windows XP Pro, I don't remember installing any kind of SATA/PATA drivers, but unfortunately Windows Setup does not recognize the hard drive installed, which was never changed.

Now, I have discovered that the hard disk sometimes does not appear in the BIOS?
Is there any type of driver that I can download and include in a Windows installation CD?

When I start the laptop with Knoppix 5.1.1 I can copy and access to all files on NTFS formatted disks, the hard drive itself should be well (im checking with HDD Regenerator v1.51 on a Boot CD for the moment).

And I have another question - y at - it an update of the BIOS for the Satellite M40-276 (PSM44E) which can be flashed on a boot CD? On the official homepage I can only find the update of the BIOS Windows :(

    Thanks for your patience...

    Best regards

    Robert of Austria

    Hello

Have you tried to reinstall the OS from the Toshiba restore CD? Or did you use the clean Windows XP CD?

AFAIK the M40 supports a SATA HDD and the laptop was equipped with a SATA HDD controller.
Windows XP with SP2 should recognize the HARD disk properly.
If your XP doesn t contains SP2 and include it using the program nLite

    > And I have another question - y at - it an update of the BIOS for the Satellite M40-276 (PSM44E) which can be flashed on a boot CD? On the official homepage, I can only find the Windows BIOS update

No, only the win-version of the BIOS is available on the Toshiba page!

  • Satellite M40 - 244--> Boot from a USB

    Hi all

I have a Satellite m40-244 with a DVD player which unfortunately is out of service.

I would like to know if it is possible to boot from a USB key to reinstall Windows or Linux. In the BIOS there only HDD, floppy, CD-ROM, and LAN drive options.

Does anyone know how to boot from a USB? I tried an external USB DVD drive, it does not work. I don't know if I'm doing the right way.

    Thank you.

    Hello

As far as I know that of not possible because the M40 BIOS does not support this!
As you mentioned in your ad; There is only one option for booting from the HARD drive, ODD, LAN and USB FDD (floppy)

    Hello

I think you should visit the Web from Toshiba site and reinstall all the FN keys tools. Therefore, you must download and install Hotkey Utility and Toshiba common Modules, they should be accountable for the function FN key.
You can download everything here: http://www.mytoshiba.com.au
