Satellite P850 - Headparking HDD / annoying clicking noise

I bought my Toshiba Satellite P850 12z a couple of weeks and since day 1, he made this annoying rattling noise. After a week or two to try to ignore it, I searched what it is. I guess it was the click of death, but discovered that it is actually a function of the hard drive, designed to protect the disc if it has fallen, guarantor of the head on a ramp when idle.

Apparently, it is supposed to do this every 30 seconds or Yes but mine did it more than 1 in 10 seconds and I can't stand it anymore. I tried some solutions such as changing power management options at their highest level, but nothing has worked. Some people have found that the programs running as "QuietHDD" but these all seem to be 32-bit and no work on windows 7, as they must be run as administrator.

I left about 4 days until that my 21 days return policy runs out and I need to know if there is a way to change this or if I have to return the thing. The only thing I've found that helps is to keep the HARD assets with defrag disk, but it works only for about 20 minutes at a time. I've had laptops before and never had this problem and there is no way that I can put up with this noise for 3 hours while trying to write an essay.

Thanks in advance to anyone who replys.

Miki

Hello

The clicking noise is nothing unusual, and in my experience, that depends on the HARD disk that is built into the laptop.
I have two laptops equipped with different hard disks.
A HARD disk created this little snap, the other doesn t.

On my laptop Toshiba the HDD protection that utility is installed which helps protect the disk drive HARD against mechanical damage.
If this utility is enabled, or active, the head of the HARD disk is exposed. The internal Accelerator sensor measuring vibration and if the vibrations are too strong, the sensor to unload HARD drive head to avoid damage to the disc.

If you want you can uninstall or disable this feature, but I do not know if this m will eliminate the rattling noise
If you can't stand the noise, you might try another HARD drive

I begin to hear the sound of light soft click of laptop

I think it's in the middle to the right and slightly down
So I think it is close to my hard drive

Sound appear only after 13 minutes. Windows startup

Can disappear for a while, but back

The performance of my laptop is excellent
No freezing or hanging or other things don't like that

    .......
Some people say that its normal and if it has disappeared from your system will be
    Slow!

Please let me know what is and how do I make it stop.

I think also that noise from the HARD drive, but there is nothing unusual. When the HARD drive is not in use read heads move sideways in safe position. I guess you can hear this sound sweet when that happens.

There is no reason to panic. All I can recommend is to create the recovery (DVD or USB) disk, and from time to time make backups of data.

  • Satellite L875 - 12 p - clicking noise

    I used the Satellite L875 - 12 p for about a month.

Since last week, I start noticing clicking noise occurs randomly between the right corner of the mouse touch pad. It's quite strange because this laptop is quite new.

What should I do to fix this?

This rattling noise can be produced by the hard drive. Look at him carefully the next few days and if it get worse the closer contact of Toshiba service provider and ask for help. In the worst cases they replace HDD, free of course.

If you have some important data stored on the HARD drive, from time to time make backups.

  • Display driver problems and clicking noise with Satellite C670D-11R

    Hi all

my friend bought a Toshiba Satellite c670d-11r in Germany on a catalogue (Otto to be precise) with Windows 7 Home Premium installed on it.

After a few months he brought to a computer store and a service in the city, he lives to do a fresh install of Windows. A day ago he came to visit me and complained about how slow it was and asked me to install Windows again and that's what I was doing.

After installing that I asked him about the CD of drivers he has no idea where he is or if he even had one so I downloaded all the drivers on the site and installed on her laptop except the display driver.

First I unpacked it in the Appdata path that has been predefined, but that he would not launch after extraction, so I gave in a path custom and tried to run "Installtb.exe" but still once nothing happened so I decided to run the 'Setup.exe', he began installing CCC and after installation, I checked "Dxdiag" but it doesn't always recognize not the GPU in the view tab as in the previous version of Windows, as a "Radeon HD 6320" but as a "Standard video card" I tried everyhing I could come with but nothing really helped, a little later, I noticed a rattling noise where I think the HARD drive should be (to the right of the touchpad) I thought that I broke something , but he said that he noticed that also a few weeks ago by clicking.

I'll post the dxdiag log now if this will help.

    Hello

In regards to the HARD drive clicking noise:
It is nothing unusual can happen with some kind of discs hard I have a few hard drives (internal and external) of two hard drives produce a rattling sometimes noise, but the drive HARD running and working properly so I guess that its ok but nevertheless if possible, back up the data always

    Regarding the ATI driver:
The laptop belongs to the PSC4AE series.
Choose the series C670D PSC4AE in driver download Toshiba form European page pilot would show you the driver compatible v8.812.2.2.

You must download and unzip the package first.
Now you should see the file TCA0056800E.exe.
This file must be decompressed too

Now, go to Device Manager and select the graphics card.
Here to choose install driver then the manual installation procedure. Now point to the folder where you have unzipped the display driver.
AFAIK driver for Win 64 bit files are placed in the driver-> display folder
Usually the Windows operating system must pick up the right files to install the driver

    That s it

  • Satellite L850 and clicking noise

Being a novice with computers I need some advice as to the operation of my new laptop, which is an update of my previous version (5 years)

While using the computer there is a 'click' noise made by computer all few minutes.
Is this his normal? If it's normal, causing the click?

I have an older version of the Satellite laptop and he never does that sound.

Hoping for some advice about this noise

    Hello

Clicking noise can be created per HARD disk.
In many cases its nothing unusual and could count on the HARD drive that is integrated.
I have two laptops. one of the computer s portable HARD drive makes clicking but the device works well, and I didn't notice the big questions.

However, it s recommended to backup the data always in case the HARD drive would be unexpected start to malfunction.

  • On Satellite P850 - 30Q fan noise

    Hello

I bought a Toshiba Satellite P850 - 30Q a week ago and overall, I love the machine, nice design, good performance, great speakers... BUT:

The FAN NOISE is driving me crazy? I had a lot of laptops different in my life, but never experienced something like this. Normally I don't notice not the fan, but this laptop I noticed that the fan.

At idle, I can hear the HARD drive - I can live with that.
Fire use, desk and surf the internet and as the fan lights up now and then to 53% and really loud! -Its disturbing when I'm trying to study?
When I play games the fan is 53% permanently, and after like 5-15 min, to happen to + 80%, what is really strong? -I can live with the fan when I play games, but not when I study or use it for use of the lamp in the train or the school.

Am I the only one to go through this?

If there is no resolution, I will return the product to the store. Its just sad when I like the rest and despite the fan Im happy on this issue.

    Hope you can help.

    > great but when I play games it rattles

Have you noticed the usual fan noise or noise appears as something wrong with ball bearing cooling fan would be?

It s nothing unusual as fans of cooling would turn faster everything!
While gaming, the GPU and the CPU produce a lot of heat. This increases the temperature and therefore the propellers rotate faster. Here's how it works!

But if the fans create an unusual sound, then that would mean that the cooling module may be defective and THIS should be verified by technicians is why would I wait not for any solution, but IF it's a hardware problem, the solution is just a replacement of parts.

  • Satellite C850 - clicking noise and freezes at startup

When I start my computer, I get a clicking sound as the morse code and my computer freezes until the noise stops. Initially, I had 8 Windows on the computer and had the problem then.

I hated Windows 8 anyway so I removed and installed Windows 7 Home Premium, thinking this would eliminate the problem but it did not. When I had Windows installed 8 noise would start at random times, but in Windows 7, it seems to happen at the beginning upward.

Clicks can go for 5 minutes to 20 minutes and it doesn't make a difference if I restart the computer. The mouse can still be moved, but there is no response when I click on something.

Some have suggested it's from the hard disk, but it is deffinately by speakers.
When I'm able to change the volume, the volume by clicking changes also.

    It's driving me crazy!
Anyone have any ideas as to what is causing this problem?

    > Some have suggested it's from the hard disk, but it is certainly by the speakers.

I thought that you intervene on the rattling from the HARD drive noise

Start Notepad, press F2 and access the BIOS.
The clicking noise is noticeable now?

What happens when the headphones are plugged?

  • Satellite P850 138 - left button of the touchpad works most completely

    My touchpad started acting strange.

left mouse button has stopped working completely and the right hand one worked only intermittently, and whenever I clicked on legs, be it firefox, IE, Safari, or whatever it is in the menu at the bottom such as a folder bar or whatever it is she she closed (no im not not by clicking on the red X)

Then all of a sudden after awhile he would all start working again. This has happened twice now.
Restart the system doesn't do nothing there just suddenly starts and stops all of a sudden, but the periods for which it occurs seems to get more time.

Also the icon of touchpad in the corner with the cross through it has decided to turn its self on a few days ago and found out that the touchpad was disabled on its own and figured out how to re-enable.

I know this isn't a virus as ive run lots of different anti virus on my system and I was wondering if his time to restart the computer in the store and get a replacement as ive she was only 4 months old

    Hello

My personal opinion, you should not replace this laptop until you tried not to workarounds.
First you don t know if its software related issue.
The point is that if its software delivers, you could solve it easily recover the laptop using the recovery of HARD drive option.

Please try to configure the computer laptop initial configuration using disk HARD recovery.
Press F8-> choose fix my computer-> drive HARD recovery

If HARD drive recovery is not available, press F12 and check if there is a HARD drive recovery option.
After the system recovery, make sure that the touchpad and other features of the laptop.

  • Satellite P850 - 12 X - not impressed

    Hello

I recently bought a laptop Satellite P850 - 12 X and have had problems since day one.
Loose hard drive sounds, the LAN adapter is flaky and the system is subject to random freeze

I tried to reinstall windows and then all the drivers, just in case where he was a software, but nothing helped.
Obtaining all the relevant drivers in a single package was also a nightmare.

They are all available, but individually, rather than as a single product.
Maybe I was looking in the wrong place, but you would think it would be easier.
Also did a full factory reset but not joy. Seems to be hardware related.

I had before Toshibas and think they are great, but this issue just feels unstable - probably just the individual product, I rather than the series, but according to the subject I am not impressed at all.

Maybe I should have stuck to the reliable TECRA series that you could probably throw down the stairs and they still work.

Off for a replacement/refund, but may think twice before of Toshiba in the future.

    See you soon.

    Hello

The driver can be downloaded from the Toshiba page as a single package.
For me is not a big problem and I prefer this method because I can choose exactly the driver I need.
Even if someone would need all the drivers available, it s not really a pain to download drivers one by one.

Regarding noise from the HARD drive:
Well, I have two laptops: a Toshiba and the other from another manufacturer.
The Toshiba notebook is equipped with a 250 GB HARD drive and the HARD drive is really quite.
The other laptop supports 500GB HDD and the HDD is much stronger
I think that this is not portable but the HARD drive which is built in

However, I m going to replace the two hard drives with a SSD drive at the moment, the SSDS are much cheaper and I guess that I notice much better performance by using the SSD drive

  • Satellite P850 - 3 repeated Crysis crash to desktop

    Hello!

    I recently bought a:

    Satellite P850 - 31L
    Part number: PSPKFE-00P007EN

and I'm very happy with the laptop overall. However, I have problems running 3 Crysis and Assassin Creed 3 on the device.

In both cases, that they often crash to the desktop and are followed by a journal of events applications such as:

The failing application name: crysis3.exe, version: 1.2.0.0, time stamp: 0x02f47040
The failed module name: d3d11.dll, version: 6.2.9200.16420, time stamp: 0x505a95af
    Exception code: 0xc0000005
    Offset: 0x00068dd7

Its pretty easy to see that the problem is related to DirectX 11 on the nVidia card.

I have a laptop specifications lower HP with a 230M nVidia GeForce series running Assassin Creed 3 without problem (although it won't run Crysis 3 due to the lack of Dx11 support).

I have tried to update the drivers for nVidia display current offical those on Satellite, but am prevented from doing so because of the soft lock used in Toshiba hardware.

I am currently using the drivers of December on the Toshiba site.

I wish I had a solution to this problem as I know that the laptop is more than capable to run these two games more than adequately. My guess is it's a tension within the video memory, but not problem can not test what I do not have a pilot exposing this.

    Thanks in advance,

    Crispian

nVidia Driver can be installed in the Device Manager, but the use of these drivers is at your own risk.
To install the driver through the Device Manager:

    1. open Control Panel.

    2. in the upper left of the Control Panel dialog box, click the words 'Classic view' causes the control panel to switch to Classic view.

    3. double-click on the icon customization and - after the Customize dialog box is displayed - double-click the display settings option.

    4. click on the button Advanced settings of the display settings dialog box.

    5. to the map of the dialog box tab advanced settings, note the exact name of the adapter type that is currently in use. This can be important if you ever want to return to this driver.

    6. after jotting down the name of the existing adapter type, click Properties. If Windows asks you for permission, click on continue.

    7. click Driver tab, then click the Update Driver button.

    8. Windows will ask if you want to automatically search or search for a software driver. Choose the option "Browse my computer for driver software".

    9. in the next dialog box that appears, click on the option "Let Me pick from a list of drivers for devices on my computer.

    10. a list of video drivers will appear, and you must scroll to the bottom and select Standard VGA Graphics Adapter. Click next after making the selection.

    11. Once Windows indicates that it has updated the driver software, you can click Close or Ok many times that you should close all open dialogs of the control panel. If, during this process, Windows asks you if you want to restart your computer for the changes to take effect, click Yes.

  • Lost on Satellite P850 recovery partition

    G ' Day alll.

Been out of the game for a while, got a Toshiba Satellite P850
I thought I'd set it back to factory default so hit zero key.

Came with option erase hdd, Toshiba Recovery Wizard.

I thought that big, it will be erased the hard drive then to let me use the hidden partition to reinstall the new copy of windows8 accompanying.

Now I get up at startup
Reboot and select proper boot device or insert pre start-up support and boot device selected any key.

IM gob felt that his own Toshiba Recovery Wizard it would wipe clean recovery partiton...

so now have no recovery partition as im aware by pressing the zero key is constantly with the above...

think I've done a big Jeremy.

Looking for best way & eaiest way to solve this problem?
    was soon macka.

Ive tried to use my hiren & bootcd but wont even pick up after chaning boot order in the bios first cd player etc.

    everything keeps going back to
Reboot and select proper boot device or insert pre start-up support and boot device selected any key.

    any help will be appreciated.
Cheers again Macka. Am I missing something?

Your biggest mistake was that you didn't create recovery media using pre-installed recovery media creator tool. With the support of recovery (DVD or USB key), you'll be able now to install original recovery image. It is also described in the document s user manuals. This backup is very important.

It's that you can't force your laptop have access or install recovery image, if it is still saved on the HARD drive. Now, you can either install the clean version of the OS using installation disc of Microsoft or order original Toshiba Recovery disk for recovery image installation.

I don't know where you live, but if you have the European model for laptop, you can order it on https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx

  • Satellite P850/05F - button Mute a delay of 1-2 sec

    Hi guys,.

I come to me a laptop Toshiba Satellite P850/05F recently, everything is perfect and I love her not to mention that of one small problem which is quite annoying. If I press the "Mute" button that is "F11"key, the mute symbol comes up, but it takes about 2 seconds so he can actually mute. " If it is not instantaneous.

I googled around and doesn't seem like everyone has the same problem or has a solution. I already reformatted and reinstalled WIndows back to the default values and also reinstalled the drivers, but the problem is still there.

I was wondering if this is common and if there is something I could do to fix this? It's driving me crazy.

Contact your dealer as soon as possible, to explain the situation and I hope that you will get the other machine.
    Good luck.

  • Satellite P850-12Z - several keys on the keyboard has stopped working

    Hi all

It all started a month ago or not.
My keyboard of laptop (a Toshiba Satellite P850-12Z) began to fail. First was the BACKSPACE key, but subsequently was the numeric keypad 3 key and the Enter key.

They start working if I hit them several times about 10 seconds or more. You can imagine it's very annoying and frustrating.

Do I need a new keyboard? For more information, the keyboard fails also under linux.

In case I need a new keyboard I think that Toshiba was of very poor quality, and I will never buy a Toshiba again.

My last laptop was from another brand, and the keyboard never lack in 5 years.

    > Do I need a new keyboard?

    Probably yes.
Connect the external keyboard and check if its not working properly.

If the external USB keyboard works, so is there a problem with the keyboard controller but with internal keyboard.
