Satellite Pro U400 - Vista boot failure

My 2nd nine Satellite Pro U400 (first a HARD drive failed after 1 week!) now does not start on Vista.
Works very well for 4 weeks with upgrade original Vist Basic to Ultimate and Office 2007.

Today on the switch on the Toshiba bar logo (with go to Setup etc.) started then replaced by Microsoft 'bar', then replaced by the arrow of the Mouse/touchpad.
Mobile arrow on the screen of the mouse, but then nothing else, boots.

Tried all modes of security and same problem.

Ideas to please or do I have a 2nd 'lemon '!

Hmm. I don't know if this problem could be related to upgrading from Vista Basic to ultimate, but nothing is impossible m.

I think the HARD drive is not the problem as you can still start the OS startup.
OK, the OS crashes, but if the HARD drive would be dysfunctional, then you should be able to see the 'bar' of Microsoft.

So for me, it looks like something wrong with the operating system and therefore the use of the recovery CD would be desirable.

Using the recovery CD would format the HARD drive, but unfortunately I really t see any other possibilities for the laptop running again.

Good luck

  • Satellite Pro U400 VISTA disk management has 6 primary partitions

    Hi all!

I have a strange effect on my Toshiba laptop Satellite Pro U400 (but it seems not to be specific to this one that I saw the same symptoms elsewhere, at the same time):

I had the laptop with a 320 GB drive with recovery-(invisible / "Configuration EISA", 1,46 Go) system (C:, ~ 150 GB) and data (E:, ~ 150 GB) volumes. It's the usual structure of Toshiba,

    pre-installed OS was Vista professional.

As I plan to install Linux in addition, I have done as a result of preparations:

    Recovery disc Vista created 1.).
2.) C: shrunk to ~ 100 GB using Vista disk management tool.
3.) E: shrunk to Go ~ 98 using Vista disk management tool.
It is suggested that 4.) E: directly behind C: using Parted Magic CD.

Finally I got a 97 GB of free space at the end of the disc, and everything worked well away. Creating an additional on the free area, Vista disk management, resulted in an extended partition created by Vista. This extended partition contained the extra volume as well as the free space remaining behind.

To prepare for installing Linux, I've finally created three logical Volumes inside the extended partition with Vista disk management tool.
After that, I had the following structure of the partition on the disk (indicated by the Vista Disk Manager):

    invisible 1.46 GB, primary
C:, ~ 100 GB NTFS, primary, active, System
    E:, ~ 98 GB NTFS, primary, data

~ 97 GB extended partition, containing:
2 GB unformatted (planned for Linux swap)
20 GB unformatted (planned for Linux root "/")
21 GB unformatted (planned for Linux "/ home")
    Empty remaining 54 GB space

    More on Vista worked properly!

Recently, I installed OpenSuse 11.1 using the volumes placed within extended partitions (user-specific configuration). The Installation worked correctly. Logical volumes have been formatted to

2 GB of swap (swap Linux, / dev/sda5)
    20 GB ext3 (Linux root ' / ' on/dev/sda6)
    21 GB unformatted (Linux "/ home" on/dev/sda6)

during the installation of Linux. Linux and Vista up and running with their scores. If I look at the hard drive with Linux' partitioning tool, I see three main partitions + range, as expected. The scope contains the Linux partitions + empty disk space.

    HOWEVER:
    ========

If I look at the hard drive with the Vista disk management tool now, I get the following image:

    invisible 1.46 GB, primary
C:, ~ 100 GB NTFS, primary, active, System
    E:, ~ 98 GB NTFS, primary, data
2 GB PRIMARY, no format info displayed
20 GB PRIMARY, no format info displayed
21 GB PRIMARY, no format info displayed
    Empty remaining 54 GB space

    This means:
VISTA DISK MANAGMENT ME PRESENT 6 PRIMARY PARTITIONS WITHOUT ANY COMPLAIN
Although a hard drive on the PC architecture usually only supports maximum 4 primary partitions.

    Issues related to the:

Have you ever seen a similar behavior?

Is this a bug of presentation in the Vista disk management tool?

Or is it a bug in formatting under Linux?

Is there a solution for this problem?

At present, the two BONES work very well. However, the disk will be get permanently damaged as soon as I try to create more partitions in the empty space left?

Sincere greetings and thanks for your comments.

    Girard

    > Have you ever see similar behavior?
    NO.

    > Is this a bug of presentation in the Vista disk management tool?
I doubt that it is a bug, I think you forgot something.

As far as I know you can create 4 partitions on the HARD drive and this is the reason why you have the ability to create an extended partition.
An extended partition can be divided into several logical drives.

That is why it s wise to create a primary partition for Windows OS for example and an extended partition, which can decompose the in logical drives (partitions) different.

However, I put t see a problem if everything works properly

  • Satellite Pro U400 - can I boot from a USB?

I am wanting to partition the disk and I don't have a blank CD at hand...

Surprised to discover, there is no option the BIOS to boot from devices USB 2.40.

Please can someone confirm for me that this is not possible?

    Thank you.

    L.

Yes, you can boot from USB FDD, primary HARD disk, optical device and network (LAN)
Unfortunately, the USB is not supported ;(

But if you want to create a new partition on the HARD drive you don't need to boot from a USB n.
Are you using the Vista on your Satellite Pro U400?

If so, you can use the Vista Disk Manager to create a new partition.
To reduce the first partition first and then you can create a new partition using a new space on the HARD drive.

  • Satellite Pro U400: How to remove folder HDD Recovery Vista running Win 8

    Hello!

I have updated my Windows Vista to Windows 8 via the Microsoft upgrade offer. Toshiba does not support the upgrade of the Satellite PRO U400 of Win8, but it works so far, only a few features are missing...

In this HARD drive recovery process, Vista folder remained on my partition E: (containing about 5 GB of files dated 2008...).

I HAVE (even 2 sets of) recovery DVD for Vista.
The infrastructure of original HDDRecory for Vista on the laptop ran defective, already long ago for some reason any.

There is therefore no reason to keep the old HDD Recory on E: folder.
It is completely unnecessary and I would like to remove this folder without formatting E:.
However, although I work with admin rights, this is strictly rejected by the system of Windows 8.

Is there any idea how to get the access rights to delete the HDDRecory folder?

Best regards and thanks for the help!
    Gernot

So far I didn't test these actions, but if you have administrative rights, maybe it's possible to delete certain partition and without changing the ability to create a new.
Try to do this, use the option of disk management in computer management.

Of course before trying to do this backup all other important data stored on that partition.

Please let me know if it will work.

    Hello

I think it is just a software problem (Boot Manager).
    Try to repair the operating system by using HARD disk recovery;
    Press F8 why portable power.
Then choose fix my computer, then choose disk HARD recovery.

If this is not possible, order the disk recovery from here:
    http://backupmedia.Toshiba.EU/landing.aspx

Then, you will be able to reinstall the OS using the recovery disk

As Akuma said, have you installed extra RAM? Remove the extra RAM and try without it.

In your position I would like to reinstall the OS (Operating System). Backup your data first, because everything on the HARD drive will be erased.
After this, start Notepad, and then press F8 or boot from the recovery disc. Then you can fix the computer. Windows will be reinstalled.

  • Satellite Pro U400-130 - Conexant and 'Stereo Mix' in question

    Hello

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro U400-130 (downgraded from Vista to XP) with the Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 "audio card" installed.

Although this seems to support HD audio, I can't find any option to use or activate the "Stereo Mix" option in the Windows console. I tried a few settings to registry and some different drivers, but so far, the option remained absent.

I know this forum and other comments on the net that Conexant audio cards do not support the stereo mix, but I was wondering if someone could confirm that this is certainly the case for SmartAudio 221?

Similarly, anyone know of another method to record the sound 'as heard' on the computer? So Far, the options appear to be a) buy an external sound card, or b) connect the plug headphone mini-jack on the mic with a cable jack.

After using a p3500 old Portege of 8 quite happy with this function (actually pretty basic), it is very disappointing to find that this card cannot support it.

    See you soon,.
    Select this option.

    > I can't find any option to use or activate the "Stereo Mix" option in the Windows mixer
    > I know this forum and other reviews on the net that the Conexant sound cards may not support stereo > Mix, but I was wondering if anyone could confirm this is certainly the case for SmartAudio 221?

I can confirm this because I have a laptop (NOT from Toshiba one) that was equipped with the Conexant audio chip and the other laptop (Toshiba Satellite a series has) that supports the Realtek audio chip.

The machine with Realtek audio chip contains stereo mix and the other non-Toshiba unit that supports the audio chip Conexant does not support the stereo mix

As far as I know the update of the driver won't help you because it looks like a hardware limitation of chip Conexant!

However, thanks for the info about the Virtual Audio Cable tool.
I think I'll try it next time

I have a Satellite Pro U400 13A running Windows XP Pro and have startup problems.

About 2 hours later, I opened the lid to take what I was doing and to a complete stop, but I got a partial summary leading to a bluescreen with the logo "XP" just to the right of Center and no home screen or directly in the Windows desktop as expected. Then, the computer does nothing.

Pressing ALT + DEL shows that both operations are underway - "Windows logon" and "Connection", but the selection does nothing.
I left the computer up to 6 hours, in the hope that it was a lengthy process that prevented it go further but still the same blue screen rest.

Do you recommend this laptop? I tried searching the Internet for customers, but I couldn't find the model U400 - 23M. What are the advantages and disadvantages on this laptop?

    Hi mate

    I n t have the Satellite Pro U400 - 23M, but I m an owner of the Satellite U400-10N.
I use it in my office all I love this little baby.

You should know that the U400 has 13.3 display and it of smaller than the P100.
So you will definitely notice a difference.

One of my friends said that 13.3 would be too low for him, but for me it s best. I can take everywhere and sometimes I m work while traveling around the world

    So I m very satisfied.

I ve installed Win XP on this U400 and it s functions perfectly!
But you can install Vista 64 bit too. The Satellite Pro U400 - 23M uses the Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T5870, that supports 64-bit

But note; the U400 is not really a cellphone game hardcore.
My U400 supports an Intel graphics chip and usually I only use it for office, graphic design (web) applications and web browsing.
