SCSI reservations esx 5

Hello

We have a project with 48x900gb sas hus.migration hitachi virtual machines of the old storage from hitachi.

There are 100 computers a virtual especially windows 7, some esx host of linux.5 by fibre channel switch and storage and ISL connected with other 5 hosts and other storage containers.

Because the disc is too big I think for a mix of raid 5 7 + 1 and 2 raid 10 raid in 2 pools of hitachi groups, large stripping.

but when I present too big lun in esx will be a problem of reserves scsi? or is it only when I have too much intensive vms in a data store? I want to keep 1 lun = 2 data warehouses.

Hitachi has 2 LUNS of controllers.all I have will present 2 ports to each controller or is better one port per controller? each esx should see tha luns.is even it correct as implementation? its my first project and I don't have too much experience.

due to the large drives and when I'll build raid 5 lun will be big.generally will be a problem to present to esx 5 TB as a data store?

ESXi 5 it can withstand without problem.

or is better to split in two?

Possibility - you should consider that a single LUN has only a single queue, which may present a problem of system.

make sense that due to scsi reservations?

There is no reserve of SCSI.

In rule General when I shared a lun and in each one I have VM the queue is one.for perfomance reasons plays no role to divide?

Queues absolutely make a difference.

and vaai in hitachi works when I have a pool of raid groups and with the selection broad stripping activated?

You must ask Hitachi who.

    1. What people use to advise them of excess SCSI reservation conflicts. Is there a commonly used tool that can monitor logs errors ESX?

At the moment it is the role of your own. Personally, I use logcheck who sends me reports when there are questions. It eliminates 90% of the junk. I give a recipe in my book.

    1. If I can't do that, I've considered alert for 11 and 15 errors on the client system event.

It is also an approach to take.

  • ESX3.5 SCSI reservation conflicts

Hi, I'm fairly new to this forum and could do with little help and advice.

We continue having locks with the SAN on competeion for disk or SCSI reservations, someone might suggest that commands to use in ESX to check all waiting for reservations and orders to be used to register all the locks. We have a HP SAN and have been told in the past that the questions are in with hp officers who are not taken care of with vmware if these have been disable on the same hosts if the problem persists. So to avoid long outages that I want to be able to pin point the lock and turn it off until a full resolution haas been found.

Looking around some people reported to ISO images shared on VMFS on hosts can cause a lot of problems with booking. I'm about to check but I have a feeling that we got a used with VM and they are shared between several hosts.

Can anyone confirm that could be the cause of the ISO a lot of activity of SCSI reservation?

    Hello

Any time that the metadata are updated there a reservation request. There are 3 updates to the metadata during an ISO read...

1 to mark the file as open

    1 updated access time

1 to mark the file as closed

Bed in the file requires no reservation requests BUT the other 3 actions require a reservation requests be made for each of the actions. VMFS is optimized to read files that do not change much so reading/changes (which do not include changes to the size of the file) open files invalidate any requests.

With the help of an ISO requires 3 booking requests do, they are VERY fast but can accumulate for as much.

  • Reservations of the thin disk growing cause SCSI?

In the classic text on the origin of SCSI reservations, it is mentioned actions like adding new VMDK or remove snapshots them or expanding, but not permanent expansion / more and more thin disks. Are there reasons why the expansion of the thin disks does not cause this? If the size of the block VMFS is small that 1 MB the thin vmdk is developed probably quite often when the comments file system develops?

It will take every time she needs to expand a SCSI reserve. Now, with the vsphere advanced locking mechanism a locking mechanism was relaxed if it shouldn\t be too big of a problem. In addition to this you could also, if your table is able, exploit VAAI capacity to unload the lock and do it on a level vs. block data store level.

Yet once, talked with Satyam and you shouldn't be too worried. Especially if you do not overload the table/data store.

  • Avoiding SCSI of Spanning reservations

    Hello community,

After taking a glance at the document "Scalable storage performance" a quick thought came to mind. According to the document the first LUN in a spanned VMFS is where SCSI reserves will take place, regardless of where the actual virtual machine being developed. So the idea I have this:, can be more or less to avoid the impacts of the SCSI reserve by first creating a small LUN, then more LUNS by covering as well as effectively all VM is on of the largest LUN and therefore not affected by the reserves of SCSI?

Your property does not solve the problem of booking SCSI. Currently, I have the SCSI reservation, and you need. However, until I am finished, you need to wait.

No matter if the reservation is against all the LUNS that compose a VMFS volume split or just against the first logic unit number, we struggle both to have the same reservation.

  • LUN and ESX Server - basic knowledge

    Hello...

I'm trying to clarify the relationship of this LUN game in the Infrastructure of VI:

    (1) is it true that you can have 1 VMFS volume associated with ESX Server at a given time?   Or can we have multiple VMFS volumes running on all different LUN associated with the same ESX Server?

    (2) I know that you have have 'shared storage' between the ESX servers in a cluster of vmotion, but the fact that "the shared storage" refers to

    (a) the same VMFS volume (no matter how much LUN spans the VMFS volume) or

    (b) or can it be multiple different VMFS volumes (b/c multiple VMFS volumes can be associated to an ESX Server at a given time)

    (3) If you can have multiple VMFS volumes related to 1 ESX Server, make the virtual machine in a cluster of vmotion, they all live in the same VMFS volume?

    Thank you!

Also remember that a VMFS data store cannot be greater than 2 TB.

Also consider what would happen if an administrator has accidentally deleted a LUN

VMware also creates SCSI reservations on a LUN basis whenever it creates a new virtual machine among other tasks. If these become too high, the logic unit number is locked significantly reducing the performance of the disk. Separation between the LUN, will help

  • SCSI sense codes

Hi, I need help to understand the SCSI sense codes if there is a problem or not...

    In all my 15 host ESX (3.5U3), I got 24/0 0 x 0 0 x 0 0 x 0.

    I put 1 2.5U4 and this server, I got 2/0 0 x 0 0 x 0 0 x 0.

In a couple of virtual machines (w2k3) we got sympi errors (not all) and the virtual machine is not on the same lun.

    When we errors SYMPI the SCSI sense codes goes to 40/0 0 x 0 0 x 0 0 x 0.

If I have deep diver in vmkernel log I don't see any errors we have scsi reservation conflicts.

Also, I have not seen everything except diretct problems sympi error.

An A / P table is just that, active/passive.  The passive node is not intended to be used unless there is a problem with the first node.  Unless you can give ownership of half of the LUNS on the 'passive' node to make it active for those LUNs, it is not a good idea to use the node from backup to 'load balancing', since the LUN, the table at least, is still owned by the primary node, so I/O will go through the backup node , on the active node.  E/s, according to the bottom of your basket between the nodes, will get still worse.

  • Agents ESX and HP management

VMware provides a KB with suggestions to minimize SCSI reservation conflicts when you use HP Management Agents KB1004771

He proposed essentially that you exclude (cmahost and cmahostd cmafcad) in the cma.conf file.

I noticed once that these agents are excluded, they no more all display the same information in Insight Manager. I guess it's because of these exclusions (see before fixation). The product name and the name of the OS is no longer to get detailed information.

    (1) can someone tell me if it is precisely because I am excluding these agents?

    (2) what agent exclusion is the cause?

    (3) does the only thing affected by the exclusion of these agents?

I would have preferred the front but if it's only these 2 problems of information display, I can live with that to reduce conflicts of SCSI reservation but, I assure you it is not something that I'm not immediately noticed.

    Hello

I heard no mention about the conflicts of SCSI reservation with these agents being addreseed with the latest patches.

    Never experienced it myself.

Texiwill - about your answer to 3 below, can you elaborate on "host control tools? The main reason that we load the HP Management Agents on our ESX host is to monitor and alert on hardware failures with HP Inisght Manager. If the deactivation of these agents, such as suggested by VMware, prevents alerts Inisight Manager, these agents become unnecessary.

Well you'll always get notified on NIC issues and a few others cut you most of the notifications, but VMware has its own tools as well. cmahostd is a fairly important piece of the software, but you should get the other articles in HPSIM. Yet, I have to disable cmahostd at all.

    (3) does the only thing affected by the exclusion of these agents? Well he neutralizes most host followed by HP tools.

I let them active. I had never had a problem and I like everything to appear in HP SIM. It gives better followed than the VMware tools at the present time.

  • ESX - Option of expandable virtual disk from VM

When using converter to import my old Server Virtual Machines VMWare ESX Server, I noticed that the option 'enable to display virtual disk files' seems to be missing. Is it just me or this feature is not available with the virtual machines in ESX 3.5? If so, all the virtual machines in ESX need to have space disk allocated in advance? (I know that the question relates to the converter, but it relates more to ESX).

    (Screenshot attached for quick reference)

    Thank you

    Tony

    Hello

Moved to the forum of the Virtual Machine and the guest operating system because this issue is more about VMS ESX itself.

VMware ESX by default uses a VMDK resetting thickness because it works better and provides better security than any of the other formats. Consider that when you're a disc you will suffer SCSI reservation requests, and these can cause havoc within the virtual infrastructure up to the stop. Granted, it's usually very busy systems, but they should be avoided at all times to increase performance.

You can use vmkfstools once the VMDK's in ESX to convert other formats as you want, but VMware Converter does not allow it.

  • Affinity reserve esxi hosts and host rules

I'm trying to reserve a few for some special VM ESXi hosts, I used affinity DRS rules to make the virtual machine to run on special guests, but other virtual machines are also coming on ESXi hosts reserved because of the DRS.

I have about 300 virtual machines running on 10 ESXi hosts running VMware 5.0 Update 2

Currently using Vcenter 5 Update 2

I have just installed 3 new hosts ESXi running the same VMware 5.0 Update 2

The new ESXi 3 hosts must be temporarily reserved for a project with 30 new VM only, but always be part of the main cluster because they will be used with the 300 existing virtual computer when the project is completed.

I have a rule configuration of affinity for the new virtual machine only works on the new ESX hosts

But the problem is that some of the other 300 vm get Vmotioned with DRS on the new hosts as they have a lot of free resources.

There are new virtual machine being added to the VM s 300 all the time by other people that I can't control.

I'm happy to manually add my special project of the virtual computer to the rule of the DRS of affinity for the reserved ESX hosts can not have "other persons" manually add the new virtual machine to another rule, should it be automatic for them.

I would like to set up a global rule to tell if you are not a virtual machine in my special project group DRS that you are not allowed to run on the 3 new ESX host.

Dose anyone know if this is possible?

Why not move the hosts in a cluster instead?

Given that Vsphere 4.1 improves on the question of Scsi reservation by now at the block level (I think anyway), it is relatively safe to do more than 1 storage vmotion? I know that in esx 3.5, we met a few huge problems once while doing 4 at a time, since then, we just do one at a time.

It's so strange. I can't create several stores data on the same drive. I have a 2 TB plugged on my server (motherboard) disk and after that I created my first store of data (100 GB), when I return to create another, that the drive isn't an option for me to create a new data store of. When I delete the data store, the drive comes as an option to create a new data store of. WTF?

    of http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-esx-4-1/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/wwhelp.htm#href=fc_san_config/c_making_lun_decisions.html

A logic unit number must contain only a single VMFS data store.

I guess the reason for this is a SCSI reservation. Even if this has been significantly reduced in 4.x it is still necessary for some operations. Each SCSI reservation - even if this is necessary for an operation on a datastore - locks the entire disk and could therefore cause problems on other stores of data on the same drive.

  • Thin Provisioning

I'm looking for the pros and cons of the use of provisioning of the disks. In ESX 3.5, there was the problem of the migration of records between data warehouses in which records have been changed from thin in. thick. This I understand has been fixed in ESX 4.0 U1. From what I read, I need to recreate my datstores for Thin Provisioning and then I can migrate live discs from thick to thin. What are some of the gothca otherwise than on commissioning?

    Thank you

    Mike

    Hello.

What are some of the gothca otherwise than on commissioning?

For me, the oversupply is the largest.  It creates a thing to have to monitor and take into account during operations.  Creation of alarms is essential, if you follow this path.

You cannot use them with VMware FT.

When a thin provisioned disk grows, a SCSI reserve be held.

The way which drives develop and activities which develop, are also important understand but not necessarily to a witch hunt.  Defragments, copy large files and other normal operations will cause thin disks to grow.  Delete the files from the virtual machine won't give you the back of the space.  The free space can be recovered, but it will take extra work. Some virtual machines just do lend themselves well to it, because of this.  We can expect big savings and not actually bring.

If performance (including writing intensive apps) are a top concern, so it is better not to use thin discs put in service as well.  You can learn more on this subject in the study of the Performance of VMware vStorage Thin Provisioning.
