Should I sysctl.conf in El Capitan?
Hi all!
The title of my query in fact already said it all.
I'm a bit confused because EtreCheck says:
Configuration files: ⓘ
/etc/sysctl.conf - file exists but not expected
The info finder said the file was created and modified on June 2, 2010 and I strongly suspect that he just moves along in the process of migrating my old iMac (mid-2011 with OS X 10.7.5) to a new (mid-2014) now under OS X 10.11.6.
So the question is, I need this file or can I safely delete it?
Oh, and while we're... EtreCheck also said:
Configuration files: ⓘ
/ etc/sudoers, 2622 but file size expected 2299
That's what worry? And if yes, what is the name of the problem and how can I solve this problem?
Loads of thanks in advance!

Sysctl.conf file configuration
Hello world
I'll install Linux 10g db.
I am trying to configure some settings in this file by using the nano editor but some settings aren't there that are mentioned in the installation steps.
as I have only these 4 parameters.
-----------------
# Control the maximum size of a message, in bytes
kernel.msgmnb = 65536
# Control default maxmimum of a message queue size
kernel.msgmax = 65536
# Control the maximum shared segment size, in bytes
kernel.shmmax = 4294967295
# Control the maximum number of shared memory pages segments
kernel.shmall = 268435456
-----------------
but describe the installation steps that I need to change these settings also
kernel.SEM = 250 32000 100 128
FS.file - max = 65536
NET. IPv4.ip_local_port_range = 1024 65000
NET. Core.rmem_default = 262144
NET. Core.wmem_default = 262144
NET. Core.rmem_max = 262144
NET. Core.wmem_max = 262144
----------------
If they are not in the file should I add these lines to the file?
Thank you
Kind regards!Yes, you can add parameters to the file.
For example
echo "fs.file - max = 65536" > /etc/sysctl.conf

Should I switch to OSX El Capitan?
Hello
I am not questioning if I should move to El Capitan or not. I read the reviews on the Mac App Store, and most seem to say it is a great improvement to the Yosemite, only I'm not either on Yosemite. Currently, I am on OSX 10.9.5, the computer is slow to open applications and at startup. This is my computer information:
I'm afraid El Capitan will just make my computer run slower and kill it, or it will be a great improvement.
So I decided to ask the people who know these things.
Pass or not?
Thank you.
My MBP has similar specs.
I upgraded the RAM 8 GB.
I have OS X El Capitan 10.11.5 installed on it.
I have not experienced any problem so far.

should I upgrade to yosemite el capitan before
I am running Cougar and upgrade to el capitan but should I go to yosemite and mavericks then first? Is it still an option? I'm not find mavericks or yosemite on the apple site.
Thank you
If you did not previously 'buy' Mavericks or Yosemite since the Mac App Store, then those who are not the same options. They are no longer available.
Just go directly to El - Cap.
Make sure you have a good backup and check your applications to ensure compatibility with El - Cap before you pull the trigger.

should I upgrade to osx el capitan
Here are the specs of my mac
you guys say.
< image edited by host to remove the serial number >
The Mac is perfectly capable of running 10.11.4 El Capitan without problems.
You can clone your system on an external drive and crash on him in case you do not like the new operating system. In this case, you will be able to clean the internal drive and clone the original in back.

Hello Apple community. So my MacBook Pro freezes constantly and loading things very slowly. It freezes during 10 or minutes at a time, but other times, it is quite well. I recently wiped this MacBook and transferred to the demands of my old MacBook, which has never had these problems. Posted below is my Etrecheck.

There are several things to consider:
It is a five year old computer, problems are bound to happen sooner or later, so get ready to tha.
First of all, you need to maybe bad RAM. Agents of the launch system, System launch Daemon and your virtual memory information imply that something is eating all of your ram. 4 GB is not much, but it should be more than enough unless it no longer works properly.
My second comment would be the hard drive. Generally, a rotating disc is not a long life in a laptop, being pushed around when the laptop is turned on and was moving. It is possible that you have bad blocks.
Thirdly, it could be your battery. Plain and simple, a dying battery.
The best option at this point would be to make an appointment at the Apple Store and run an MRI (Mac resource Inspection) to detect what can go wrong.

EtreCheck results for MacBook with El Capitan
I would be very grateful if someone take a look at this EtreCheck report and advise me. It shows that my system is running "below average", and I don't know enough about what I'm looking to do anything with these results. I went through and tried to highlight any areas that stand out in the report. I did go and uninstall Safari extensions, as I use Chrome.
I know a little on the systems, but not enough to help me out here. I downloaded a file which I think is a virus, but could not find using methods, I have installed. So I ran EtreCheck and got this report:

Updated my iMAC 7.1 with 4 GB of memory with the intention to go to El Capitan, but after reading the slowness becomes the MAC, it would be best to go with Yosemite?
If you upgrade the amount of RAM your iMac should be able to handle El Capitan nicely.

Move to OSX 10.11 (El Capitan)?
I am currently using OS X 10.10.5 and thought to install 10.11(El Capitan) on my new iMac, however, I have the following problems:
1. on the app store comments 41 people gave 10.11.5 (the latest version?) a star which is the highest rating, 5 stars above.
2. After reading various Articles and discussion forums, I checked if my current applications would work, (I used roaringapps.com) and guess what, 6 of them the spokesperson "no data", which could mean that they do not work. These are apps (incl. YNAB4, 13 elements of Adobe, Microsoft 2008, etc.) I use a lot. In addition, I read versions where the other apps have reported problems, including the apple applications...
I have a time machine backup, but don't want the hassle of having to reinstall the entire system.
I heard that Apple is about to launch a new version of El Capitan next month, so maybe this will solve these problems?
A phrase sticks in my mind "" If there ' int broke, don't fix it ""
It came because I bought today a software that needs OS X 10.11 and I had not spotted that in advance. I can't risk moving the OSX just to use this software, risks that result and the possible disruption are too great.
I'm a big fan of Apple software and hardware which is the best, and I'm surprised they have launched this appearance prematurely, and judging by the comments of the people there are a lot of unhappy customers.
Ignore these reviews. They are disgruntled users who often do not know what they are doing and won't ask for help. Ratings are from 1 to 5 for the highest and lowest.
See the basic steps for the upgrade of OS X. Get an another spare drive and install on it. Then, you won't have to reinstall anything that it is should you care to use El Capitan. Alternatively, you can clone your existing on another hard drive and system using the Start Option.
Please try not to listen to the complainants. Only the complainants and the magazine editors complain about OS X. There is less that you have been brought to think unhappy customers. Each new version of Mac OS X Gets the same type of complaints.

What should I do before upgrading 10.6.8 Snow Leopard?
As much as I like the snow leopard, it really is time to move my iMac 2010 on a more modern operating system. I am very nervous, especially since Apple is not a disc available for purchase to upgrade to a disc.
Apart from backing up (I have Time Machine on a separate drive), is there anything else I should do before upgrading to El Capitan? Should I disconnect the Machine from the first time?
I know I'll lose the ability to use some older programs, but I can live with that.
I fixed the permissions a couple of weeks - at this point, it's just the things that appear like fixing all the time (which IIRC are things that are supposed to be that way, but see the place as a 'bad').
Thank you.
While Time Machine is a form of backup, I strongly suggest that you make a full bootable backup on an external drive and test by starting from it before upgrade you.
In addition, as a suggestion for the future, by releasing a new OS, you can download the installer, leave when it starts to run and put aside, just in case. When El Capitan was released, Yosemite became unavailable unless you had already "bought". The same was the Mavericks and earlier versions of OS X when disks for the delivery of OS X are out of style.

Upgrade to El Capitan and Photos
I have an iMac with OS X 10.8.5 2010. I use iPhoto ' 09 v.8.1.2 for a library with 28 826 photos (67 GB).
I want to upgrade to El Capitan. I bought a copy of Photos for Mac and iOS: The Missing Manual to try to prepare.
First step of the author for iPhoto to Photos to Mac migration is at level iPhoto to the latest version. The catch-22 is that 9.6.1 has disappeared from the App Store and the author says that if you have not upgraded to iPhoto to 9.6.1 before you upgrade to OS X 10.3, iPhoto won't open at all. My research of this forum seems to confirm that others have had the experience of not being able to update iPhoto, especially if they have never bought an iPhoto update in the App Store - I did not.
So, which seems to mean that once I go to El Capitan, I no longer able to use iPhoto. I can make it with that, but I still need to know the best way to prepare for the upgrade to avoid problems.
27 October 2015 old Toad said to a person using an even older version of iPhoto, I am, ' you don't need to upgrade your iPhoto library, if everything you want to migrate to and use the new application Photos in El Capitan. " It's reassuring.
I know that the first step is a backup. And I read that iPhoto, but also trash the Finder trash must be emptied.
Is there anything else I need to do?
When I upgraded to Snow Leopard to Lion mountain in February, old Toad advised me to first rebuilding my iPhoto library. Integrated tool of Apple made a mess and I used iPhoto Library Manager version 3.2.4. Is there a reason that I would need to rebuild the library again?
Thank you!

It's true. 9.6.1 iPhoto is the only version compatible with El Capitan.
But you can't update iPhoto 8.1.2 to this version. It is not a free update, but requires a purchase of iPhoto 11, and that is not possible any longer, because Apple has stopped selling iPhoto on the App Store.

It would be wise to carry out all repairs - repair permissions, library, in order to ensure the iPhoto library has no problem to repair. It must be done before you upgrade the system, because it will be impossible to run iPhoto 9.8.1 after the upgrade, if you discover problems with the library. But make a backup copy of the library, before fix it you. This way you can easily restore the original library, if repair should go wrong.
I know that the first step is a backup.
Make a full backup - a Time machine backup or a bootable clone. Then you can restore your system, if you should encounter any problems with El Capitan. See: OS X El Capitan: revert to a previous version of OS X
Where your iPhoto library that Library stored? If it's on an external drive, move it to a disc, it's to the Mac OS extended (journaled) format. Otherwise the Migration to pictures does not work.
Photos does not yet support lot changing like iPhoto. If you need batch change titles to the date or the name of the file do while you still use iPhoto.
Complete all projects book or calendar in iPhoto, because the book and calendar templates have changed and books may be different in Photos.

Office jet 6700 Premium: Officejet 6700 on El Capitan installation generates error message
My Officejet 6700 would print but it would print in grayscale color). I downloaded the HP - inkjet ink-SW-OSX - Mavericks_v12.34.51 (I note was released in October 2015, but also notes that the Mavericks is two itterations - old Yosemite was the next and now its El Capitan). I deleted my old HP 6700 driver and tried to install the new driver. But I get an error. I was going to attach screenshots of the error msg but do not see this option. I tried several times with the same result. Even tried to download driver HP - inkjet ink-SW-OSX - Mavericks_v12.34.51 a 2nd time.
The driver should not be accurate for El Capitan instead of Mavericks, i.e. There are two OSs?
I felt like I was in a 'catch 22' because I had deleted my old driver and now the new driver is not install and now I had no driver with which to print... so, I slept on it and went back just to try the 'install new printer' "printer & fax" introduced in system preferences. Here, I was introduced to here, and optionally 'Air Print', I chose! This works. Thus, it is apparently a bug in the HP - inkjet ink-SW-OSX - Mavericks_v12.34.51 driver installation routine if you attempt to add a printer during the installation / implementation, but if you install the new driver and then just go to System Preferences and add a printer, everything is ok ;-)
