  For your request I can guess that you're new to java, so welcome to this wonderful world of development, now to answer your question, I know apple comes with a complete jdk by default, try this in your terminal:

  javac -version
  

  If you get a response, this should be the version of the jdk, you have installed. If it is ok you only need an IDE to develop in Java, netbeans, for example, simply select the Mac version:

  If you want to use a hard drive external Mac and PC options are:

  1. format the drive in Mac as exFat

  2. format the drive to NTFS on a Windows PC and use a program like Paragon NTFS for Mac. https://www.Paragon-Software.com/home/NTFS-Mac/

  I'm not a developer, but I know you're going to need a macbook pro. It's too slow a processor to do what you are wanting to do wayyyyyyyyyyyyy. 1.6 ghz is for normal tasks such as navigation. You certainly need to do a few upgrades to the Air of Macbook 13 inch if you are wanting to do the development. I suggest strongly a faster processor and at least 8 GB of RAM. You will want to get a Macbook you will have more work, because it will have a much shorter life if abuse you it, that is why I suggest the Pro. Have you checked the refurbished Macbook Pro? I think you could find one close to your price range! If this isn't the case, except a little bit of money, it is not too hard!

  Since you are new to vSphere, I'd say go with ESXi.  ESXi is the future of the product, and you can also get it free!  Take the installable option and see if you have a piece of hardware on the HCL install it on.  Also be sure to check out the excellent product documentation.
