Shrink VM disks ESXi

Hi all!

I have a virtual computer on an ESXi 4 server.  It is 75 GB in size. (Windows server w / c: 36 GB and D: 36 GB)

I need this transfer on an ESX 4 server, but I want to reduce the drive I just need 40 GB (20 GB C: and D: 20 GB) prior to the transfer.

I want the machine transferred to be identicle to the original, just with young readers.

I went through these communities, GOOGLE and many more.  I can't find a way to do this.  Anyone of you well, Comrade VM'ers can help me with this?

Thanks for your time.

  • Alarm for the latency of disk esxi-home

I would like to set a new alarm to monitor all esx host disk latency in our vCenter.

We found the settings, to set up this point for a virtual machine.

[vCenter alarm-> add new detector for a virtual machine-> trigger Type: disc Total VM Max (ms) latency]

So we need the same alarm, but for the esx host. But I can't find the right trigger type neighter events on the right (for which we can configure an alarm).

The problem is that sometimes the Raid Controller battery is defective and then we notice everything by checking the performance of the disks-esx table:

    disk_latency_performance.jpg

We need an alarm for exactly this measure: drive higher (ms) latency.

I also searched for setting up an alarm in the store of data according to, but without success.

Maybe someone has an idea how to set up such an alarm.

    Hello!

There isn't any support in Client vSphere or vCenter. You can use esxtop to know but there is a lot of work to get a sort of wake-up call.

A VMware product for this is vCenter operations, but it might be too depending on your environment.

There is many products from 3rd party who will do that for you. vKernel VoP (formerly called vFoglight and I think that Veeam One will do this for you.)

  • My concerns about installing ESXi on a USB Flash Disk

    Hello!

There was a lot of messages about installing esxi hypervisor on a usb flash drive, what I've done and I think it's ok because there's no need to waste expensive disks for installation of a very light bone

But I have a few questions and concerns in this regard. appreciate your answers.

1 - first of all I can't find my DL380 G7 Server internal usb. can someone give me a link or a picture where he is exactly?

2 - Suppose that after boot completely the host, something happens on the usb drive. If nothing happens? I think there should be nothing to worry about, because the hypervisor has been loaded into the memory of the server. Am I wrong?

3 - my concern is to have backup and the ability to restore that very quickly. some time in the past I had a single esxi host. I used powercli and commands appropriate for configuration backup host (I think that the command was something like esx-cfgbackup or like that).

so if the flash has been corrupted, I would replace it with another and restored the settings that

but now I host 4 esxi and vcenter. should I worry about this? How should I have backup? I know that SQL backup database of vcenter and its certificate is sufficient to have a backup of the settings of vcenter but on those who are just to vcenter and which are on the host? just want to say, what should I do to be able to replace a faulty usb disk (esxi is on it) with a new and all get back to work as it was?

Sorry if the questions are easy to answer. I'm just a beginner

and sorry for my bad English

Assuming that I don't have the license for the host profiles, what should I do?

It depends on the complexity of the configuration of the host. You can back up the configuration of the individual hosts or just reconfigure reinstalled once. In a larger environment, you'd probably for example the hosts scripted installation.

Because the server vCenter Server usually runs as a virtual machine, it is a good idea to do an image based backup (using backup vDR or 3 rd-party applications), and - in the case where you use a dedicated SQL Server - certainly back up the database. For the backup and restoration of vCenter Server, you can also take a look at http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1023985.

In the rare cases where an SD card fails, you can always vMotion virtual machines to another host and then reinstall the host with a new SD card.

  • Satellite L850 - how to replace a HARD disk recovery partition?

    Hello.

Toshiba laptop Satellite L850. PSKDGA-02Y012. The original HARD drive has failed in his colleagues even mobile, so we replaced the two HARD drive after you have created a recovery USB. When used to restore the operating system to original status of OOB.
That has worked and portable runs much, but now I want to BACK the recovery partition (now only on the USB I think) for the new HARD drive.

Simple to shrink the disk HARD C: (partition 2) on the HARD disk, but then how to transfer twhats on the USB (USB recovery stick) back on the HARD drive?

    Thanks for any help.

    Karim...

    Hello karim

When you buy the notebook you will get it with preinstalled operating system (recovery image). Original recovery image is saved on the HARD disk on the recovery partition.
Each owner of the laptop has option to make the backup recovery image and create recovery media. It could be the DVD or USB support. You can do this by using preinstalled Toshiba recovery media creator tool.
This tool will create bootable recovery media that can be used for the installation of original image recovery if there is problem with the installation of image disk HARD recovery or when the drive is defective and must be replaced.

Where the HARD drive is faulty and should be replaced or the owner of the laptop to upgrade HARD drive, you can install original image created using recovery recovery media (USB). After installing recovery image, you will have the same situation as for the first boot after the purchase of the laptop. With other words notebook will have factory settings again.

In this case original recovery image is already copied onto the new HARD drive and you will also be able to start the installation of HARD drive recovery. There is therefore no reason to copy a recovery on HARD drive media.
Please note: installation of HARD drive recovery works with the factory only settings.

If you have any other questions do not hesitate to ask.

    Good luck.

  • What "not scanned" means in hard disk space Manager?

I have a Studio 1535.  The Manager space drive says that Go 149.4 is "not monitored".  I don't know what that means - or how to fix it - but I guess that explains the inability to update programs and periodic bogged down (not completely, but temporarily freeze gel).  In fact, I just hit the scan button and now it's up to 127.5.  What now?  I have only 8.9 GB of free space (and I shouldn't really have if little - I'm not a mega music or user photo).  Thank you very much!

See if this helps: How to fix that shrink Vista disk space

Not monitored is the space used by the system that is not available to free up, but there are ways to control how the system uses.

  • More than 40 Virtual Disk-000... created the vmdk files

In the host, under all my files, there are more than 40 hard of virtual disk files and it seems that the number becomes larger.

I don't know if I should organize everything in one folder or remove them? (New to Fusion 8 Pro)

They are counted as Virtual Disk-000... Vmdk, Virtual Disk 05.Marco - 000.001.vmdk, etc.

I have attached a picture of what looks like this message.

Thanks and much gratitude for any help!

    Hello

You should not reorganize and certainly not to delete them.

These files are your virtual disk. If you move or delete them as your virtual machine will get corrupted and the chances of data loss figure in your virtual machine or top.

There is the possibility of having your virtual disk consisting of a single file. However, the thing is that while that may seem better on your eyes, it also means that common tasks like shrinking your disks or deletion of snapshots become more difficult.

Rather than try to list all the reasons on what you are currently experiencing is the best way to have your virtual disk, I don't want to point you to this site:

    http://sanbarrow.com/VMDK/monlithicversussplit.html

as this was a good list.

Personally, I've removed "All My Files" from the Finder (uncheck in preferences) that I didn't like it and had nothing to do with the virtual disks. Down here, they don't show same under there.

  • Creation of snapshot on ESXi 5.1 fails

    Hello

Im having a problem creating a snapshot on a certain virtual machine on ESXi 5.1. It fails with the error "file is larger than the maximum file size supported". Now, I've read a few KB articles including "1012384"... but I can't yet absolutely determine the cause of the error.

VM is a file server with several hard drives.

    Disk1 Disk2 of 40 GB, 1, 9 to, Disk3 1, 5 TB, 2 TB Disk4

Machine including all disks files are on a single data store.

    Data store: VMFS 5,58, Blocksize 1 MB, 7, 81TB, used capacity 5, 45 to, free 2, 36 to

I read an article that the 2 TB - 512 b is correct for a file in ESXi 5.1 but that a certain amount of space is required for the load of the snapshot. ~ 16 GB for a 2 TB drive. The 4th disc with a 2 TB size would be the problem?

I've added a screenshot. Sorry, its in German... but basically, he says that a file (filename not specified) is larger than the size max data store (database not specified).

    Thank you

    David

... a certain amount of space is required for the load of the snapshot. ~ 16 GB for a 2 TB drive. The 4th disc with a 2 TB size would be the problem?

It is probably the case. The maximum file size for a hard of snapshot is size provisioned to the virtual disk, more overhead (metadata), which must not exceed 2 048 GB less 512octets with ESXi versions previous ESXi 5.5 (or VMFS3 data warehouses). To create a new snapshot, actually no matter how much you have on the datatore of free space on the disk (this is to you to monitor the free space to avoid the problems of out-of-space disk), ESXi only checks if the maximum possible size is supported on the data store, to allow the snapshot to grow as required.

  • Single node ESXi with large local storage

I have a HP DL180 G6 loaded with 2 160 GB drives, in the opposite direction. I'm also 6 2 TB disks in a RAID5 configuration including a spare drive (approximately 7.4 to useful).

What is the best way to take full advantage of the direct storage of this machine?  SAN/NAS isn't in the budget.

Currently, I have install ESXi sitting on the 160 GB mirrored drives and thought I'd get to use all of the 7.4 to other readers as a local data store, but only the instalation disk ESXi shows upward, the other readers that have been configured to RAID5 but do not appear in vsphere.

    Thank you.

What RAID controller do you use? E200/P400? There BBWC/FBWC?

To be able to use the full 7.4 to with ESXi 4.1 you must divide the RAID in several logical volumes, smaller than the maximum supported size 2 TB less than 512 bytes. To do this, boot from the CD/DVD of SmartStart and run the ACU (Array Configuration Utility). Once completed, start the new ESXi and use the "Add storage" Wizard to create VMFS storage of data on the logical volumes. Depending on the maximum size of virtual disk that you plan to use, you should consider to choose the appropriate block size while creating VMFS data warehouses.

  • VMware Tools: Shrinkage of the virtual disks - what is - this intended?

    Hello

Maybe I'm missing something, but what is the "Reduction of the virtual disks' in VMware Tools used for?  It seems to me that 'reduce the virtual disks' is the only thing that it does not.

I have a virtual disk in a virtual machine with Windows 2003 Std x 64.  A 'volume' (a partition on a dynamic disk) disk occupies 10 GB on a virtual disk.  The rest of the space on the virtual disk is not assigned.  I want to "shrink" the virtual disk to recover the unallocated space.  But the function "reduce virtual disks" VMware Tools seems to allow me only to "shrink" the disk volume or partition.  I want to reduce the virtual disk.

    What Miss me?

    Thank you.

Your best best for shrink disk is to use VMware vCenter Converter.  The fret is more than one optimization tool, a bit like a Defrag tool, but will not reduce the size of the disk of the virtual computer.

  • Virtual disk size problems.

    Hello

I have a virtual SCSI disk has a size maximum of 50 GB and divided into 2 GB files.

My problem is that the disc takes 28 GB of space on the Mac; but I have only 14 GB used in the Windows XP virtual machine and it shows 36 GB free.

I would like to reduce the Mac files to a more reasonable size. Is this possible?

VMware Fusion (menu bar) > help > VMware Fusion help > creating virtual machines > VMware Tools > configure VMware Tools ("Shrink virtual disk to a virtual machine, to reclaim the unused space")

VMware Fusion (menu bar) > help > VMware Fusion help > managing Virtual Machines > virtual hard disk management > cleaning up a hard disk

If you try to use the information mentioned in the pointers above and you cannot because of Snapshots, then take a look at the following.

VMware Fusion (menu bar) > help > VMware Fusion help > using snapshots and AutoProtect > deletion of snapshots

Note: Before taking any action, I highly recommend that you at least have a data backup current full user that was created from the virtual and recorded outside the Virtual Machine itself Machine otherwise have a backup of the virtual machine and not a backup Time Machine, as it is not know properly backup of VMS in current conditions likely several.

  • Vista Basic & Windows98 on a series of Satellite

I created a * new Volume * (d) * 8,22 GB NTFS healthy logic drive D * > I did it by reducing C: where my operating system base of Vista is on.

How can I install Windows 98 on my laptop so that I have two operating systems?

I tried to do it after I created the * (d) * 8,22 GB NTFS healthy logic drive D above as follows:

1 > put the Windows 98 CD into the computer and turned on my computer to Boot, then selected where the CD is on the screen

2 > I chose to start Windows 98 without CD ROM support

3 > then I see a message poster C all data will be erased do you want to continue? so I decided to * demolition * installation of Windows 98 in fear that my Vista operating system would be erased!

I don't know what to do as I thought that the purpose of * C shrink in disk management * was designed for a different operating system to install?

The only reason why I want to do that if I can use my HP4200c scanner and FAX software.

A package-BACK partiton is using your entire hard drive.
To install Windows, you must remove your files not MS-DOS and reconfigure your drive hard so that WIndows can use.

Setup can remove files and reconfigure your hard disk for you.
If you choose this option all files on this disk will be deleted.

    Hello

AFAIK, you must convert the D partition to the FAT32 file system.

But I do not know if you will be able to convert it in Vista.
However, I use the bootable Win98 floppy drive. This allows to format the HARD disk and create partitions.

I think you should google for a bootable Win98 FDD... many sites Web provides this FDD by download.

Then you could try to start from the Win98SE CD to install the operating system.

    Good luck

  • Chassis numbering after power fail? Persistence?

I had a workplace, where all the blades have been associated and power off (customer did tests of power environment). All OS are installed on local disks (ESXi, Windows, Linux).

Then a power fail that happened. Power returns and the discovery of the chassis was completely screwed upward, the numbering has changed.

This meant that turn the blades has resulted in a total chaos; Failure, because there wasn't any blade this slot chassis; or bad what BONES were found.

Fortunately, the strategy of default scrub was disc = no

We had to turn off all chassis, then towards them in the old order...

Why are there no persistence of the chassis, he remembers his number and returned to the top with the original id?

    Walter,

Who would do the trick. Please answer before I tried to reproduce this morning :). Yes, I noticed on the other posts on the failure of upgrade occurring, I wasn't sure if this was linked to another environment.

I hope that everything is retrieved and you are online. If you need assistance let me know.

    Kind regards

  • No space for snapshots

    Hi all.

I have a machine virtual Windows 2003 R2, which is defined and works very well.  I need to create a snapshot.  When I tried the snapshot, I received an error that there not enough space to create the snapshot.  I looked on the volumn iSCSI SAN, this VM is sitting, and it has 250 GB free.  When I look in the disk on the virtual machine Manager, I see that there are 55 GB free.  The VM watch storage provisioned to 260 GB and storage used to 256 GB.

How to shrink the disk to allow snapshots without having to use the converter to create a new VM?

    Hello.

There are only two options-use the converter or create a new VMDK (space permitting) of the desired size and use xcopy or robocopy to move the data from it.  When you are finished with the copy, and then delete the original disk.

    Good luck!
