Shut down and install updates
I am running Vista 64 bit.
I got a ToolTip hovering over my close icon that said Shut Down and install updates. So I clicked it, noticed there are several updates to install and walked off to go do something else while it has been updated. After it updated, it will turn off. Now when I hit the power button to turn the PC on his saying to check my boot device or change my startup location and press a key to continue. I tried to use my vista cd to retrieve and repair the safe mode, but it does not find my hard drive!
I guess what I need to know is, in fact the process of update killed my hard drive? I can get it back without cracking open the case and replace my hard drive? And if I need to replace my HARD drive how can I recover my data?
Hello
1 did you receive an error message?
2 are you able to start your computer in normal mode?
3. are you able to boot in safe mode?
4. the repairs were finished with success?
Method 1:
I suggest you get into the BIOS and check if the drive is detected
Enter the bios and check the first boot device and make sure that the hard drive is set as the first boot device

Recent documents: every time that the computer shuts down, (IE Automatic updates or I turn off during the night) recent documents is empty. How do I prevent this? Don't know if the following has nothing to do with it, but - about 6 months ago I reinstalled XP, since then I have no sound and comes to the foregoing. Oh and to add, at the same time, I've changed hard drives up and down, which means that I have and that he had 2 hard drives.

Differences between "View Update History" and "installed updates".
I have discrepancies between "view update history" and "installed updates". Updates do not match and there are a lot of differences. I'll try and link to an extracted image so you can see the differences.I have a Gateway GM4574 with an AMD Live 64-bit processor, but am running Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit) SP2,I found this problem when certain Office updates (KB2760411, KB2760583, & KB2760588) kept wanting to be installed over and over. This problem is now resolved. Here's the problem I'm having now...When I compare what follows, I come with a LOT of contradictions:(a) Control Panel, system and Maintenance, update Windows, view update history(b) Control Panel, programs and features, installed updates
Please see if your system has the same problem. I don't know if it will work, but I'll try and link a picture of the views of two control panel so you can see the differences. Just look at the dates of arrival and you will immediately see there are problems.
Here is the link to an image I've snipped: https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=95DC3CEDE6DDD9BD! 814 & authkey =! AEwfCYrNsbmnUk0 & v = 3 +When you click on the link and the page opens, look down the page and you'll see a thumbnail of the image. Right-click on it and click View Original. It looks better this way. It is easier to read.Again, I didn't know you can see updates two of 2 different ways, but there are a lot of updates do not appear on the installed updates that appear on view update history.
I'm worried about this because I don't know whether or not updates are really installed.Any help would be appreciated.
Sincerely,DennisHistory is not important, it's the installed updates that are important.
At a certain stage, you can reset Windows Update, thus losing your history, or may have installed updates manually.
Don't worry about this. As long as the computer is updated and the updates are listed under "installed updates", it is essentially.

Impossible to disable firewall NIS2010 so I can download and install updates
Microsoft told me that I should disable my Norton firewall and antivirus while downloading and installing updates to avoid problems (I have dial-up access)
In msconfig when I remove the chech in the box for this program and click 'apply' the audit took place in the area and it does not turn off. If I then click on "OK" and restart it won't always turn off. I unchecked other programs and click on 'apply' and it worked.
I tried reinstalling and it still does not work. In addition, I can't change how it starts in services.msc
I'm waiting until it is resolved to do my updates. Help, please.
Thank you

Why did Windows using stealth tactics and install updates without permission or notice?
Why did Windows using stealth tactics and install updates without permission or notice?
It becomes a regular event, it also seems to restart in the middle of the night to set up these updates. I don't know what the intention but
[Vista 32 bit] I returned this intrusion in the files to my PC and I always despise microsoft to decide to act like a pirate. I'll give microsoft some time to answer this, but I expect to be as horrible as they are usually with the customer service. So in a few weeks, I'll start to smear the name of microsoft as much as possible and sway anyone my possible to buy non-Microsoft products.Read here:
Microsoft Update product team blog: Windows Update and automatic reboots
http://blogs.technet.com/Mu/archive/2008/10/02/Windows-Update-and-automatic-reboots.aspx>
Change how Windows installs or notifies you of updates
If you select the download updates but let me choose... option, no update will install without your approval. Suppose an update will require a reboot and does not approve the installation of an update until & unless you are ready to restart.
You can change the AU for the "updates but let me choose whether to download and install them" setting. Once you have done this, you will need to approve the updates are downloaded, the updates are installed and where they are installed.
I prefer "check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them" setting.
