Smaller SSD HD replacement

I need for what I'm using my computer, so I went out and bought a 240 GB ssd to replace with 500 GB. The old one failed. However, when I put my USB in recovery in he said to I have a 463 GB at least hard disk to perform the restore. Is there a way to get around this?

I use computer Inspiron 15, I think it's a 3521

You will need to contact Dell for a Windows disk (NOT the recovery media) to perform a manual installation - media recovery can only restore to a drive of the same or larger than the original.

My C drive is currently a 149 GB SSD.  I want to replace it with a new, unformatted 256 GB SSD.

I would like to know 1) if there are specific things to be aware before you format the new drive.

I put the new drive as SATA port 0 (or 1, depending on where your begins).

You can use Clonezilla to clone:
Should work just fine. It will automatically affect the C: drive. Just make sure that it is configured to start first in the BIOS (won't matter on the drive letter, but you don't want a start - they look identical other than the disk space).
  • 7mm too small SSD for my x61s

    Hello

I just bought a new SSD to replace the HARD drive, I had. The SSDS works well, but he is currently being held in place by the paper, because it was too thin to hold ramps rubber that has kept the drive HARD original in place.

Someone knows any reliable product to solve this problem?

Or do I just wrap the SSD in Ribbon to make it thicker 2 mm?

    Anything I should watch?

    polar_foxx,

have you removed the caddy of the original drive 9.5 mm and fixed on the 7mm disc, worked a treat on a ThinkPad that still use original rubber of the R series track for me.

  • New MBP and two raid 0 drives 4 GB 7200 rpm or replace a small SSD

    Hello

I apologize if this in the forum somewhere.  I'm looking for 4 hours through the posts and cannot find an answer to this question.

I ordered a new Macbook Pro products listed below.

MacBook Pro 15 inch with Retina display

    • 2.8 GHz Quad - core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.0 GHz
    • 16 GB 1600 MHz SDRAM DDR3L
    • Storage 1 TB PCIe Flash
    • Graphics card Intel Iris Pro + AMD Radeon R9 M370X with 2 GB of GDDR5 memory

In my research, it seems that the best configuration will add two additional discs.

I want to purchase the LaCie 9000601 robust Raid Thunderbolt.  Its configured as a RAID 0 4 GB (2x2gb configured raid 0) read and write speed is rated at 240 MB/sec.  For the third disc is there going to be any speed up if I did for one SSD drive with read and write speeds above 400 MB/s?  If I won't see any significant speed I would make the 3rd disc an additional LaCie.

    So the two configurations:

    #1

C: 1 PCIe storage to Flash

D: drive for raid 0 4 GB lightning

E: drive for raid 0 4 GB lightning

    #2

C: 1 PCIe storage to Flash

D: drive for raid 0 4 GB lightning

E: 500 MB SSD with reading and writing of at least 400 MB/s

I will mainly be 4K video editing from a 3 ghost drone.  Most of the videos will need only some basic edition/transitions and possibly a color correction.  I would like to modify in real time or near it and have always render as low as possible. I will be editing in Premiere Pro CS6 and could switch to CC.

I appreciate all the comments.  If it not is not much of a difference, I would #1 configuration where it provides an extra 3.5 GB or storage and is cheaper at the same time.

Thanks for your comments and help.

It seems that the ghost 3 mp4/h264 files? These files will be slightly compact vs other formats, reducing the demand placed on the disc. LaCie rugged raid should operate correctly for the media to hold, and then you can set the project on the C: drive cache. If you work on small projects, you will be able to store everything on the flash disk and the backup to an external drive. If you want to keep on an external drive media, the DSS will provide faster response times to access the various elements when editing.

  • Update of small SSD at big SSHD or SSD?

I recently bought new x230T because of price special promo, however, I realized the disc somehow, the space is very small (128 GB), as I am a media professional I need more space.

I was wondering if it would be OK to replace the 128 SSD that was previously installed in the laptop which has install windows 7 with the largest capacity such as SSHD Seagate 500 GB? It would compromise the speed and performance if I switch to SSHD? I thought Samsung 840 250 GB SSD also, but I felt that 500 GB would be ideal to accommodate my needs of work (websites, videos, graphics, etc.).

If I use Acronis Migrate or software EZ move would be the new drive SSHD or SSD will work after replacement the same as the old SSD assuming everything goes normal including multi touch feature functionality, stylus and Tablet etc?

I look forward to your reply

    Kind regards

    Marty

    Welcome to the forum!

Stay with SSD - SSHD will be definitelky most negatively affect your laptop paerformance - and get good deals around you...

    Happy update.

  • Convert a small SSD using PC Restore fuller?

Can I use complete PC Backup/Restore to convert a disk hard solid state of my office?  The SSD is small (128 GB) than current hd (250GB).  Looks like this answer has been 'No', but I just wanted to confirm that I'm not missing something.  Seems that the problem is that complete PC Restore does not restore to a smaller disk that was backed up (although I use 30 GB of it).  As SSDS become more popular, seems like it might be a problem.  Am I missing something?  Can I do it?  What happens if I decrease my original 250 GB 1 partition down as much as possible and leave the rest not allocated?

There is a restriction that the player restore you tomust be at least as large as the original. To quote:

    http://TechNet.Microsoft.com/en-us/Magazine/2007.09.backup.aspx

Because the backup of the computer includes a picture of all of the computer, some restrictions apply when restoring to different hardware. First of all, the backup image contains drivers that are used to start the machine after the restore is completed. In rare cases, the pilots needed to start on the new machine could not be present. This can happen when you restore an image backup taken on one type of disk controller (IDE, SATA, or SCSI) for another type of disk controller. Even in this case, it is still a good chance that you can complete the restore successfully, because the common Windows drivers included in the backup of the image would probably compatible.
Second, the restoration cannot be carried out if the new computer has at least the same number of hard drives and each hard disk is at least as large as the original, it replaced. Don't forget these restrictions if you plan to use the backup of the computer for the migration to new hardware.

Windows 7 has much better support for SSDS, I'd take the option to install Windows 7 on SSD and simply copy the data across.

  • Uprgrading to a smaller SSD hard drive

I just bought a touchsmart TX2-1370us Tablet and want to exchange it the drive with an SSD of 128gig 320gig. When I do that and try to restore the system with my recovery disk, it gives me an error that the drive is smaller than the original. How to make it work with to purchase a copy of Windows 7? I tried ghost my original disc to my new SSD, but it won't let me start when I talk about.

It is VERY frustrating that I can't just Exchange my player and updgrage to something more fast.

    Any suggestions?

Problem solved. Thanks for the tips on Acronis True Image.

On my first attempt to mirror from my hard drive to my new SSD using this software, I chose not all partitions, so I wasn't able to get my tablet to boot from my new drive.

On my second attempt, I created a backup of all partitions on the disk. I recorded this backup file on my desktop. Then I plugged my new SSD drive in an external USB enclosure and which connected to my laptop. Then, I got the backup file on my new SSD. When this was complete, I swapped drives was started for as small, but fast SSD drive.

Thanks again for the tip on the software. He was free and worked perfectly.

  • Cloning my Mac Mini to a smaller SSD drive

I have a Mac Mini end-2011. Inside is a 'spinning' hard drive 500 GB. I also have a Samsung SSD 128 GB 850 vacuum EVO. I would use disk utility on these video instructions to transfer all the data from the original HD of the SSD.

All instructions have been followed and that the whole system works very well, except the error at the end until the copying/cloning actually starts. During its installation phase, once launched, the disk utility application tells me that there is an error related to the size of the source drive that can not be copied in the targeted SSD.

While I realize that the size IS an issue, the content of my original HD is limited to 29 GB. So copy everything should be easy, and I thought it would be handled by the app.

SO: can I shrink the partition size of the original HD in the same size as the target SSD? It would work properly? If Yes, where can I find instructions to do this?

Alternatively, did I miss an option somewhere in my set up the restore function? There is an option somewhere that I may have missed?

(More in detail: when you select the source for restore partition, I chose the WHOLE - not the partition drive included.) This is maybe what is causing the problem? If I had chosen the included score only, this would work immediately and disk utility would have taken into account the size of the empty space, would have narrowed it down as a result of automatic way?)

If you use the restoredisk utility, your Destination drive (128 GB SSD) must be the same size as your Source (500 GB) drive or equal size. I don't have not divide a disk HARD grand in separate partitions, then try to do the restore. You can try this if you want.

So, you're the best alternative in my view is to initiate your HD Recovery from the HARD disk and reinstall OS X El Capitan on your SSD. During the installation, and then migrate your user accounts, applications, data, the parameters of your 500 GB drive.

You can also use Carbon Copy clone or SuperDuper! to clone your disk to your SSD assuming that your HARD drive will not fill to the top of your SSD during cloning. Then, you always have to reinstall OS X El Capitan to write your Recovery HD on the SSD.

  • Need an SSD to replace my HARD drive in 15 "model end of 2011 of the MBP

I use the original disc of hard - 750 GB - provided with the MBP (late 2011 model), but its very slow and I want out parts of the HARD drive before it dies. (I also have a Quad Core i7 processor - another reason I want to keep this MBP, rather than having to buy a new for $3 k).

I watched the SanDisk SSD. Later those go up to 960 GB of storage, but they are SATA III models and my MBP has only capacity SATA II with a link speed negotiated 3. GBs WHEREAS the SATA III new models (SanDisk/Samsung) can handle up to 6 GBs. SanDisk Tech Support told me I could use their latest models SATA III , but the speed would be actually slower that my current set up.

Thus, all other options for me? for one SSD that is compatible with my MBP and increase the speed?

    Thank you! Appreciate any help!

  • Is there a direct way of (small-step) to replace a file in a book?

I'm looking to update a book of FM.

As an independent project, I've updated every chapter in the book, rename each file by adding 'UPD' name of the file. Here are the chapters of content, not generated files (table of contents, index, etc.). The name change is not optional - the owner of the book needs to know, at the level of the file name, which files have been updated by me.

Is there a direct, minimal-step way to replace, say, "Chap1" by "Chap1UPD"?

Or should I add "Chap1UPD", and then manually remove "Chap1?

I would say the simplest technique (and one that will not break the links in the book) are the chapter in the book right click window and use the command rename after the updates on this chapter.

    Online help:

    Rename files

When you rename a file in a book, FrameMaker renames the file on the disk and references of updates, links and text insert links in other files in the book.

    ...

Select the file you want to rename and choose Edition > rename or right-click and choose Rename.

Type the new name for the file and press ENTER. When the warning message appears, click OK to update the other files in the book.

  • HP Stream 13: I fight with a small SSD of 32 GB.

HP Notebook of 13 Stream with 4 G from T - Mobile + Win only 1.2 GB left on disc SSD of 32 GB after that I updated Win 8.0, 8.1.

I installed the Norton Security Suite, MS Office 365, and Google Chrome Web browser. 1.2 GB seems OK. However, from time to time, he goes up to 250 MB. I have to restart the laptop.
Is this normal? Are there solutions?

I know that someone tried to remove the non-removable 7.1 GB recovery partition. It does not work. I know that someone used SD card to install additional programs. However, three program installed by do me not required enormous space.

A I missed something? Any advice will be appreciated.

Run Disk Cleanup, open windows Explorer and right click on the C drive, select Properties.

On the general tab, click Disk Cleanup, it will work for a minute or two, when it is made to another window opens, click Clean Up system files now, he will run again, this time will give you more options to get more disk space.

You can also go to the other tab in the disk cleanup window and click on the clean button in the System Restore section.

Do not use the compress this drive to save disk space option!

  • Is it possible to replace the hard drive with an SSD? or would it be too expensive?

Is it possible to replace the hard drive with an SSD?

or would it be too expensive?

Yes.  There are several alternatives.  I found a way relatively inexpensive, using a map of mSATA (very small SSD) and an adapter to connect it to the connector IDE 44 pin internal of my PowerBook.  It works very well.  Rather than repeat what I posted previously, you can watch these two topics (which also has good info, other users)

FYI - I have used the adapter is even cheaper now
